RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 19th January 2018 “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people that prepare for it today. Malcolm X
Message from the Head of School. It has been an exciting time with lots of events taking place for our students. This term we are offering an increased range of extra-curricular activities, please encourage your child to participate. The theme of student assemblies has been our ACED teaching and learning principles and expectations. It has provided me with the opportunity to share with the students the new and exciting way we are training our staff to deliver the lessons in the classroom. We also explored how they can facilitate their own learning. ACED is an acronym for Assessment, Creativity, Engagement and Differentiation, the key ingredients for successful learning. If you want to know more, please attend the Parent Forum on Monday 29th January at 6pm, everyone is welcome. We will also promote essential study skills and ways to support your child. On Tuesday some of our Year 11 Students visited Oxford University; this provides them with a taste of university life and allowed them access to one of the highest performing universities in the country. We take the students on many university trips, to inspire them to want to attend university and to appreciate the level of qualifications needed. As part of our careers programme we also provide students with information and access to the many Higher Level Apprenticeships now being offered. Please do not forget that it is the Careers Fest next Thursday evening at Epping Forest College from 3pm to 6:30pm. This is part of our careers programme to ensure students are given an extensive range of post 16 information, which includes; Sixth Form Colleges, Apprenticeships, Further Education Colleges and Universities. I look forward to seeing many of our students there.
On Wednesday, our Year 12 students participated in the Safer Essex Roadster Event. The students were provided with really important information and advice on becoming responsible drivers and ensuring that they remain legal and safe on the roads. Please can I remind you that the deadline for our Sixth Form Applications has been extended to Tuesday 23 January and all students that are intending to apply should email their application to nsellears@rodingvalley.net rd

Students continue to enjoy their Sixth Form Taster sessions, this week a Further Maths session was run by Mr. Mammen. It was both challenging and engaging; it demonstrated the skills they will develop when they study this subject in the Sixth Form. Can I remind all parents of Year 12 and 13 students that it is Parents’ Evening next Tuesday 23rd January. I look forward to seeing you there. With our work in the community I was delighted to welcome students from Buckhurst Hill Community Primary who experienced challenging Maths and exciting Science lessons on Wednesday, everyone involved enjoyed the experience immensely. Have a great weekend

On Tuesday 16th January, 21 students from year 10 and 11 went on a trip to Hertford College, University of Oxford, to get a taste of life at Oxford, the application process and higher education.
On the 16th of January, we went on a challenge and enrichment trip to Oxford university. When we arrived, we were greeted by a tutor, who was formerly a student at Hertford college. We went inside, and she told us about the college, and what learning at Oxford. She then demonstrated a 'tutorial', which is a lesson a student gets either alone or with someone studying the same thing, with a tutor. After, we went to lunch in the dining hall. The food was nice, and there were lots of portraits of former students hung on the walls. We then went on a tour, with a chemistry student. It was amazing to see the Bodleian Library, one of 6 copyright libraries in the UK. We also saw the student accommodation and heard stories about the college cat, Simpkins. The last thing we did before we left was listening to three current Oxford students, who told us their opinion on what life was like and all about the admissions process. Overall, it was a very educational and interesting day; and now I want to study at Oxford! Florence New, 10

On Monday 8th January, Roding Valley High School played Shenfield High School. Roding got the Mini Bus to Shenfield School. The starting XI in goal was Tommy Yeomans, the two Centre-backs were Oliver Poulton, alongside Jamie McSweeney, the left back was Charlie Ruse, and finally the Right-back was Sam Hyde. In the midfield was Lenny Hunt, George Marlborough, Daniel Little, Leon Harris and Demmy Nicolaou and up top was Louis Choules.
The formation we played was 4-4-1. The first Whistle blows, they have kick off, they pass it to their centre back, who hoofs it to us and we keep possession until we see a chance to play a through ball to Lewis, who skims the post. We were then awarded a free kick, which Jamie took and hit it just over the bar. They then kept possession until they got a free kick, which hit the bar and then it was half time. Mr Allen gave us an inspirational speech for the second half, and then unfortunately Demmy gave away a penalty but Tommy makes a great save. They then got a corner and got the rebound and scored. Then we tried to attack, but we just could not score, then we just kept possession and before we knew it, the referee was blowing for half time

This week year 12 students, had a visit from the Safer Essex road safety partnership. As driving is becoming important to these students its necessary to provide them with appropriate information so they become responsible, legal and safe drivers/passengers as they start taking lessons or travelling with friends as newly qualified drivers.
Students were engaged with 4x60 minute scenarios during a full day of activities which included information on the fatal 4 reasons for road traffic collisions: Drink / Drug driving Mobile phones / texting & distraction Speeding No Seatbelts
Presentations on Tyre Safety / First Aid at the scene of a crash were also delivered. The Safer Essex roads partnership is also running a competition to win a Vauxhall Corsa Sting which students had an opportunity to enter by making a pledge on: www.mysmallchange.co.uk

On Thursday, Mr Cheema (Deputy Headteacher) led an important PREVENT assembly to the Sixth Form. This form part of our “Teaching British Values in The Sixth Form, And Safeguarding”. “Safeguarding children - the action we take to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm - is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone who comes into contact with children and families has a role to play” The Prevent Strategy aims to prevent people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism It has three key themes: Ideologies: To respond to the ideological challenge we face from those supporting terrorism. Individuals: To provide support and advice to vulnerable individuals, preventing them from being drawn into terrorism Institutions: To work with Education providers to address the risk of radicalisation and violent extremism of whatever form. If you would like to discuss this further or see a copy of the presentation please contact Mr. Harris (Head of Sixth Form).
As we get ready to launch promote new student leadership opportunities, I thought it would be useful to outline some of the achievements of the current team, in their own words…. Ensured that peers in the Sixth Form had a voice - would deliver their opinion on certain issues to key staff and act as a mouthpiece between the two. ● Assemblies introducing Sixth Form Executive Prefect Committee ● Amended Sixth form uniform policy ● Worked with the School Council on the introduction of school ties for the girls uniform and a whole school House system ● Zambia non-school uniform day fundraiser ● Children in need fundraiser (Non-Uniform Day, ‘Guess the Baby’, Penalty Shoot Out) ● Spoke at Sixth Form and Year Six Open Evenings ● Ensured that the Sixth Form had a voice ● Developed leadership skills. ● Increased public speaking skills, as exhibited through Friday’s assembly. ● Supported the schools Christmas food bank appeal ● Toured prospective students and parents around the school campus ● Worked as a senior mentor to support younger pupils ● Started a book club with Lower School ● Led assemblies for younger years ● Represented the Sixth Form students on important inner school matters ● Deputised at school open evenings ●
● Organised various bake sales and fundraising initiatives to support inner school businesses and to promote the school image ● Established links with various charities and community initiatives to promote the school image -- including Loughton Voluntary Care and Loughton-based care homes ● Mentoring younger pupils to discuss and relieve pressures ● Appointed a committee for Prom and begun both planning and booking Prom ● Operation War Child ● Held a sponsored car wash

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.
MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.
