RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 20th April 2018 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
Message from the Head of School I trust that everyone had an enjoyable Easter break. It has been a pleasure to be back in school this week; the students have come back very focused and the sun has been shining. Thank you for your support with our dress code as our students are all looking incredibly smart in their uniforms. At RVHS, when it is very hot, we do relax our rules regarding the wearing of school blazers around the school site but they are still expected to have them with them and not wear alternatives. Students are also permitted to drink water in lessons, so please can you ensure that they have water with them. I would like to thank the teaching staff who came in over the Easter holidays and offered study and support session to our GCSE and A level students. These were really well attended and the students have said that they were of real value to them at this stage. Please note that study leave will start on the following dates for these students, full details will follow:
Year 12 AS: Friday 11th May
Year 11 GCSE: Friday 18th May
Year 13 A2: Friday 25th May
I have really enjoyed being in all the assemblies this week; the new Head Boy and Head Girl, Harry BoydWalker and Grace Cain have been introducing themselves alongside their Student Executive Committee to our student body. They have talked about their roles and their ideas to lead the school forward, I am very proud of them. It is quite daunting talking to an audience which consists of 200 plus of their peers. It was also a delight to be in the Year 9 assembly and listen to our Speak out Challenge Finalists, it was totally inspirational. Congratulations to Livvy Turnball, Florence New, Daniel Grogan, Ella Margetts, Oliver Wells and Lewis Scarfe. Our School has celebrated sporting success this week with our Year 7 Football team winning the Harlow and West Essex Cup, with a score of 0-1 against St Marks. It was only a winning penalty from Ryan Dadson being the difference between the two teams. What a fantastic way to start their RVHS careers, being crowned West Essex & Harlow district football champions. And a personal thank you to Mr. Ali for all his efforts with the team this year and long may it continue.

Our congratulations to the Year 8 Team; who may not have won the District Final, losing by 4-1 to Epping St John’s with our goal being scored by Lewis Charles, but what a great achievement to be crowned 2nd place in the District. Our Sixth Form Team won their league semi-final against Moulsham High School and we look forward to their final this week, along with our Year 9’s as well. At RVHS; we offer our Sixth Form students the opportunity to achieve the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), this is a qualification which universities hold in high regard. On Monday 23rd April, we are hosting an EPQ Celebration Evening, where our students will be showcasing their work. This event will be of particular interest to those students who are considering studying the EPQ when they are in Sixth Form. The event will be held in the Sixth Form Study Centre at 5:30pm, if you would like to attend then please contact Miss N Sellears at nsellears@rodingvalley.net Next week; we will be celebrating Shakespeare’s birthday and we are delighted that the Globe theatre is now coming in on Tuesday 24th April to run workshops with our Year 7s. If you have a child in Year 7 please do check your email for details of the day and the contribution required. This is a really exciting opportunity for the school and the students involved. I appreciate that the evenings are now pleasant and light, but please can I ask that all parents ensure that their sons/ daughters go straight home at the end of the school day. I would reiterate that theSmajority Ms. Jenner of our students are an absolute delight but where there are large groups of students congregating it can Head of School appear intimating to the local community. There are also some undesirable people who hang around the station area and these are best avoided.
Hope you can enjoy the sunshine over the weekend.
Ms. S Jenner Head of School

“For their brilliant behaviour and fantastic attitude to learning”.
Well done to our Year 7 Football Team, who beat St Marks 1-0. The only difference between the two teams was a penalty from Ryan Dadson. What a way to start their RVHS careers, being crowned West Essex & Harlow District Football champions
Explore Learning has launch the National Young Writers’ Awards Competition! For the past nine years, Explore Learning has been inspiring children to write, from the young authors in the making to those a little more reluctant. This year they are celebrating real life heroes, from firefighters and paramedics to teachers and parents. They are inviting students to tell us a story, in 500 words or fewer, about a hero! The deadline is the 29th of April. Students can enter online at explorelearning.co.uk/youngwriters. The national winner of the competition will be whisked off to Disneyland Paris with their family, and the winning school will receive £500 worth of books. Miss. F Williams, Year 7 YPL

On the 24th-25th March, we completed our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition. Our adventure began when we arrived at the start point. We split off into groups, and each had group had an instructor, who took us through our first walk. They taught us how to read and orient a map, the rules, and some tricks and tips. We reached our campsite around 4 o’clock, and once everyone had arrived we set up our tents and cooked ourselves dinner.
The last thing we did before going to bed was check our routes for the following day. In the morning, everyone woke up very early, made breakfast, and took down our tents. It was fun to be self-sufficient, and we really learnt the meaning of teamwork when clearing up! Afterwards, each group set out, complete with maps, compasses and route cards, to find their way to the finish point. This was the hardest part.
There were several times when we got lost, but luckily the instructors were always close by to give us a hand when we needed. The walk felt like it lasted for hours, and without a shadow of a doubt the best moment was seeing all the teachers and instructors cheering us on as we reached the finish line. I feel prepared for my assessed expedition, and I can say that a wonderful time was had by everyone on the trip. Written by Florence New

English interventions on Monday for those students who have been invited to focus on specific areas from their PPEs.
These links will help with the Anthology Poetry Revision
Students should be referring to the pink and blue personal learning checklists in their English exercise books. They should be using them to identify areas they need to work on. They then need to use the purple booklets issued in class to practise their exam technique. English teachers are happy to support students if they bring their questions to them for marking and advice. Students should be reading non-fiction articles. What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision. Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.
MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.
