RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration
Respect Endeavour
Week ending: Friday 22nd June 2018 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
Message from the Head of School It has been a busy week at Roding this week with lots of events and trips happening around the school. I would like to begin by congratulating Cherise Barone, 10V who recently claimed the title of ‘Best in Country’ for her Boxing Skills. Please read her interview with Mr. Price further on in this bulletin The Year 10 Exams began this week and the behaviour and attitude displayed by our Year 10 students has been fantastic. These exams are an important milestone on their journey towards their GCSEs. On Monday staff from the Humanities Department visited Whitebridge Primary School where the students learnt how to survive an earthquake and about building earthquake resistant buildings. Also, Students from Alderton Primary spent time on Tuesday learning about ICT, and Staples Road Primary students learnt about Food and Nutrition on Thursday. This is an amazing opportunity for the primary students to experience some of the subjects they will study when they attend Secondary School. Our Year 12 Students visited Kings College London and were able to learn how to apply to study Politics at university; they also had the opportunity to listen to a talk by the Honourable Baroness Smith of Basildon Our Accelerated Reader students were rewarded for all their hard work with a trip to Chessington which they all thoroughly enjoyed. Yesterday saw the “Roding Valley Bake Off” being held after school. Students spent time baking a variety of cakes, which the judges happily munched through to decide who the winner was. There were so many different varieties that it made it very hard to choose between them. We also welcomed some of our incoming Year 7 students on Thursday from Staples Road Primary, Buckhurst Hill Community Primary and White Bridge Primary for the first of our Year 6 Testing Days.

Next Wednesday we say goodbye to our Year 11 students; with a special Leavers Assembly followed by their Prom at Woolston Manor in the evening. This is always an event to behold with beautiful dresses, smart suits, amazing or quirky cars and a sense of growing maturity amongst the students. For the majority of our Year 11 students this will not be their final good bye as they will be returning to join the Sixth Form. This next part of their journey starts with the Sixth Form Induction on Friday 29th June. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the PTA for organizing an exclusive Shopping and Pamper evening last week - it was a fantastic event which raised £406. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported this event. Unfortunately we have had to postpone next week’s Parent Forum; this will now be arranged for a date in the future and will cover Body Image. We will keep you updated. On not such a positive note, it has been reported to the school that some of our students have been seen using Nitrous Canisters, commonly known as ‘Laughing Gas’ at Roding Fields. I would like to remind parents of the dangers of this kind of behaviour and have included guidance further on in this bulletin. I have contacted the individual parents concerned and I would like to take the opportunity to remind Parents that this type of behaviour is also bringing the school’s name into disrepute and if it is brought to light that this type of behaviour is continuing, we will have no choice but to sanctions in line with our Behaviour Policy. In Years 7 to 9, pupils ‘Drop Everything and Read’ for 20 minutes in every school day. Strong literacy is key to success in all subject areas and reading each day promotes this. Reading regularly improves spelling, punctuation and grammar, all of which are assessed in a number of subject areas on the new 9-1 specifications. We also want to encourage a love of reading for pleasure and have asked our Year 7s to write book reviews to share with you what they are reading during DEAR Time. This week we feature 3 reviews from 7X. Enjoy!
Dear DEAR Time, I have been reading ‘Lying about Last Summer’ by Sue Wallman. This book is about a girl called Skye, whose sister called Luisa died. She died last summer in a pool of her own blood after being knocked unconscious. Skye is now at a holiday home the following year, where they specialize in people that have lost loved ones. She is trying to overcome her fear of water and will not tell anyone about the last summer, except a boy called Joe, who she gets on with. She has a friend called Fay, who lost her Dad but finds Fay quite annoying, her closest friend in Danielle who lost her Mum. At the moment in the book, Skye has gone Kayaking with Brandon to try and get over her fear of water. I am enjoying this book because it shows the reader that they can get over anything in life and still be happy and smile. Written by Emily Pendry 7X Dear DEAR Time, I liked the book ‘Boy at the Top of the Mountain’ because it is a very exciting and hard to put down. The Author of the book is John Boyne. The character is called Pierrot. At the beginning he is a really kind and generous seven year old.In the middle he is more grown up and is brought up with Adolf Hitler. When he was seven, he had a friend called Ansel and when he was in Berlin he could not send any letters that included his name because it was 1934 and the Jews were treated as slaved. As he was brought up in Berlin, they had to change his French name to Pieter. At the end Pierrot is quite a demanding man and likes to get everything he wants. When I read the ending it was very sad, because if Pierrot had grown up with his parents he would have been a completely different person. Written by James Stein 7X

Dear DEAR Time, I have been reading ‘Boys Tales of Childhood’ by Roald Dahl. This book is not a normal book; it is a book about Road Dahl’s childhood. It contains stories about Roald Dahl when he was a young boy. His past stories vary from when he was a toddler until he was an adult. All of the book consists of lots of different stories about when he was at school, when he went on holiday, embarrassing memories/personal experiences and other strangely interesting stories.I am about three quarters of the way through the book and so far I really like it. Out of five, I would rate it a four, because some parts of the stories go a bit boring at times. I enjoyed this book because the language that Roald Dahl has used was clever. He gives a sense of humour in his writing and you can also relate to some of his past experiences too, and you can understand what school was like when he went to school. Our Tennis teams have done exceptionally well this year – on Wednesday we won the WESSA U15s Mixed Doubles Tennis overcoming teams from Davenant, Bancroft’s and West Hatch. The Year 9 and 10 boys are through to the final of the LTA County Competition against New Hall. Last Friday, our Y7s and 8s won the WESSP Yr7/8 Secondary Schools Tennis Competition at Theydon Bois Tennis Club.
‘Roding Valley's Bake Off’ Challenge this week was another huge success; our young bakers whipped up a storm to create some amazing cupcakes, all hugely different designs and creations. Thank you to our judges Mr. Murray, Ms. Sargent and Mrs. Daly who had a hard task in judging such a high standard of competition. Congratulations to Lola Collings (7Q) with her winning unicorn cupcakes, and runners up Nancy Tabram (7U) and Hannah Ward (8W). Well done to all participants in the competition, and thank you to all parents/guardians for your ongoing support.

Cherise currently boxes out of Islington Boxing club and has recently been confirmed as number 1 at her weight category in the UK. Cherise recently travelled to Grantham (Lincolnshire) where she fought against a competitor from Kent. The fight consisted of 3- 2 minute rounds and Cherise came out victorious following a split decision this confirmed her position as number 1 in the UK.
Interview Q: When did you start boxing? Cherise: I was 8 years old and my Dad took me to Gator Amateur Boxing Club in Ilford Q: Why did you get in to Boxing? Cherise: Firstly my Dad was a boxer, I was also very energetic as a child and I tried lots of sports out including dance, cricket, karate but my Dad took me to boxing with my brother and I really enjoyed this the most. Q: When did you have your first fight? Cherise: I think I was 11 years old and I actually lost it! I was quite upset but determined to improve and get better. Q: Would recommend other young people to get involved in boxing? Cherise: Yes, I think it is a good way of keeping you motivated and disciplined. I have also had the chance to meet lots of other people from the country that I would not have had the chance to meet. Next academic year we hope that Cherise will be holding some assemblies for year 7 and 8 to talk about her journey and her success’s. Cherise will also be taking some ‘master classes’ for selected pupils.

We are recruiting 12-18 year olds who are looking for fun, friendship, action and adventure in their spare time. The Army Cadet Force is a youth organisation that teaches life skills to young people through military based lessons and activities. The ACF gives young people the best possible start to their lives, alongside curriculum learning at school, by encouraging them to follow the values and standards set out. These are Selfless Commitment, Integrity, Loyalty, Respect for Others, Courage (Moral and Physical), Discipline and Adherence to the Law. We strongly believe that any young person who joins this organisation will truly embody these values in all aspects of their lives going forward. We recruit young people from all different backgrounds, who have a range of personal strengths and difficulties, but provide them with a rounded experience that they can excel and thrive in. It may be confidence, behaviour, attention or social skills that a cadet struggles with but we have been successful in assisting young people to positively change these things, even supporting excluded pupils in PRUs back into mainstream education. Above all, it's enjoyable and exciting! Young people have the opportunity to achieve so many brilliant things; they gain self-confidence, structure, support and a real sense of pride. Becoming an Army Cadet has heaps of benefits. The most obvious being that you get to take part in loads of exciting and challenging activities such as fieldcraft, adventurous training, first aid, music, sports and shooting, to name but a few. When you join as a cadet you will make lots of new friends and get the opportunity to go on annual camp where you will meet cadets from other detachments in your county. You may even get to go on expeditions to amazing places in the UK and sometimes even abroad. The Army Proficiency Certificate (APC) training syllabus will teach you leadership skills, discipline and give you self-confidence you never thought possible. You will learn a wide range of transferable skills such as: the ability to command tasks; make decisions under pressure; plan and organise tasks and work as an effective team player as well as independently. These skills will equip you for life and add an extra string to your bow at times when competition for college places and employment is fierce. Through your cadet training you can also gain valuable qualifications such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, BTEC First Diploma in Public Services or Music or the ILM Certificate in Team Leading.

Dear All I have been asked by some of our students, which employers are attending next Thursday’s Future Day Event, so I have attached some detailed information so you can plan who you wish to speak to. Remember you will only have approximately 10 minutes at each table. Also don't forget that every company has a variety of roles, like finance, HR, Technology, Marketing, Administrative, so if you look at their careers page and you don't find what you are looking for speak to them to see what they do offer. I really hope you enjoy the day, make sure you get as much out of it as possible, remember the current year 13s secured employment this year from the Business Breakfast last year so make the most of this very valuable opportunity. Please remember that you must be in school by 7:45am and we will be expecting lots of support from you to ensure that the Employers that have attended this year’s event are signed in and arrive to the Canteen on time. Together We Can Make This A Very Successful Day!

Whatis DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.
Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App. MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.
