RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 23rd March 2018 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
Message from the Head of School It has been really nice to feel the sunshine this week, even if only sporadically. Hopefully, with the arrival of british summer time; this weekend we can look forward to some warmer times. However, more snow is forecast for Easter! Due to the changing weather we have at times been more relaxed around school footwear but next week we will be doing uniform checks in assemblies and please ensure that you use the forthcoming Easter holiday to replace uniform or shoes as appropriate. The uniform expectations are included in this bulletin on page 17; can I reiterate black trainers are not acceptable unless worn for specific medical purposes, all jumpers must be school issue and skirts must be worn below the knee. The students’ appearance in our community is very important to the good standing of the school and our uniform is now of a very high standard which I intend to maintain. I thank you for your support in advance, our consistent expectation benefits everyone. As usual the school will be running a full programme of support for our GCSE/ A level students during the Easter holidays. I am always so grateful for the excellent and committed staff, who are always prepared to come and support the students at this crucial time. Not all schools offer such a programme and many students find the structure offered invaluable in preparing for their exams and ultimate success. The programme has been emailed to parents and students but is included in this bulletin on page 10. Please contact Mr Vermaak if you have any concerns: mvermaak@rodingvalley.net The majority of sessions are targeted at certain students identified as needing additional support or challenge. This is a period of revision at all levels in the school and revision guides and tips have been emailed to support both parents and students. Please also look on our website in our Teaching and Learning Section under GCSE Revision Resources. I would like to thank Miss Hanlon for organising the Year 10 “Speak out Challenge” Workshop this week, this being the first stage in a national competition. The students were fantastic and I look forward to seeing them present in assemblies.

Thank you to all the parents who attended the Mental Health workshop held in the parents’ forum on Monday 19th March, Miss Dyer said that it was well attended and parents found it very useful. Huge thanks to Luke Lowrie from the Red Balloon Family who came along to share with parents some of the presentation and support we have offered our students through the MiLife project which was commissioned by the local authority to support the positive mental wellbeing of young people in the area. The presentation and additional support services are available on the website. Please note that the school will be supporting Sports Relief on Thursday 29th March. It will be a nonuniform day with lots of fun activities, students should wear something red. There will be further information to follow next week. I wish the students well on their practice DofE Bronze expedition at Skreens Park in Danbury this weekend. As you aware from September 2018 we will have some amazing new facilities including a further brand new 3G pitch on our extensive playing fields, a new build with state of the art classrooms and an impressive new 6th Form study area with library. To enable prospective parents to fully appreciate the developed site we have taken the decision with governors to host our Open Day on Saturday 6th Ms. S Jenner October 2018. The school will be closed to students on Monday 29th October after the half term. Head of School Please note that we finish on Thursday 29th March at 3.05pm and return on Monday 16th April at normal time.
Ms. S Jenner Head of School
Have a good weekend

Roding Valley's Food & Nutrition Department hosted another Year 9 Tea Party - where students made scones and invited family, friend or teacher to join them for a traditional cream tea. The sweet aromas of the freshly baked goods filled the room and all guests and students enjoyed the experience!
Our Catering & Hospitality Year 10 Class were tested for their creativity this week; to bake and decorate their own gateau... no mean feat and all looked amazing... we hope all their families were as impressed as the staff, including Mrs. Jenner who visited the class for their lesson.

On Tuesday 21st March, Roding Valley High School held the 2018 Jack Petchey “Speak Out!” Challenge work shop day. 30 Year 10 students spent the day in the Library with workshop leader from The Speaker’s Trust, AC Gaskell and Challenge & Enrichment Coordinator Miss Hanlon, working on a range of speech writing activities and techniques.
After a day of preparation, the students all delivered their speeches in a competition period 5. The standard of speeches was incredibly high, with topics ranging from lisps to gentlemanly etiquette.
The 6 winners of the competition, who are going through to the next round are: Livvy Turnball, Florence New, Daniel Grogan, Ella Margetts, Oliver Wells Lewis Scarfe.
Two students who won the ‘Highly Commended Award’ were: Leighton Brooks Katie Feeney. The winners from the first competition round will be competing in a school assembly round to go through to the West Essex Regional Finals on 10th May at Epping St John’s School.

Students should be referring to the pink and blue personal learning checklists in their English exercise books. They should be using them to identify areas they need to work on. They then need to use the purple booklets issued in class to practise their exam technique. English teachers are happy to support students if they bring their questions to them for marking and advice. Noor Anjum Students should be reading non-fiction articles. Mrs. Hodges and I have had the honour this week to watch the first round of Extended Project Interviews. After half term we will be having a formal EPQ Celebration Evening on Monday 23rd April, (timings to be confirmed), whereby Year 13 EPQ students as a final part of their course will present to invited students, parents, Governors and SLT. After Easter, Year 12 will be invited to think about the EPQ’s, and those students that are interested can start in the Summer Term.
Benefits of the Extended Project Qualification If there’s an area of study you really love – whether it’s engineering, languages, sport or art-based – an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) gives you the chance to develop your skills and knowledge AND impress universities at the same time. For example, at the University of Birmingham, they recognise the EPQ as valuable proof of your capacity for independent learning, as well as your passion for the subject you want to study at a higher level. So, when we see it on your UCAS application, it shows us that you’re serious. The benefits of doing an EPQ include:
Enhancing your UCAS application and potentially helping you meet the conditions of a university place offer, as it’s worth extra points.
The opportunity to produce a piece of work that’s truly individual and says something about you as a person, whether it’s a written research report, event or creative artefact (like a computer game or artwork).
Demonstrating to universities that you’re enthusiastic about the subject you’re applying to study.
Proving to future employers that you’re a self-motivated character with useful skills in your chosen field.
Producing a portfolio which you can be proud of and help you start to think about your future.
If you are interested speak to Ms. Sellears or Mr. Harris.
RVHS Sixth Form We will also be hosting a DofE Event for Year 12’s and so please keep checking google classroom for details.

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision. Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:
We have also included a link to a very useful guide on how to view your child's due and submitted homework:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.
MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.
