RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 27th April 2018 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

Message from the Head of School It has been a busy and exciting time for our students this week, with a lot of events happening. Here are some of the highlights... We ended last week with our GCSE Music Concert, where our Year 10s and 11s showcased all their hard work to parents, governors and staff. It was a wonderful display of the musical talent we have within our school. Thank you to Mr Savage our Head of Music for putting this event together. Last week, some of our Year 10 students visited Thorpe Park as part of their GCSE Business, even though it was an educational trip, our students had a lot of fun. We had a fabulous start to the week with the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) evening; our Year 13 EPQ students presented their work to members of the school's Senior Leadership Team and Governors. The quality of their work was quite outstanding and was the pinnacle of a year’s hard work by our students. Topics ranged from poor dental hygiene and effects on third world health, to what happens to your social media after you die. Many students said that the projects helped them secure university interviews and has supported their independent learning skills, which will be invaluable in the future. This is a qualification that the sixth form would like to extend to more students going forward. On Thursday night, some Year 9 students put on an amazing showcase ‘DNA’. The audience were very impressed by their acting skills. The Year 9 boys were a credit to the school when having their vaccinations this week; I received an email from the immunisation team praising them for their manners and conduct. Well done Year 9. Our Year 7 students had great fun celebrating Shakespeare’s birthday and were given the opportunity to spend the day working with professional actors from the Globe Theatre in London. The actors put on a series of workshops that looked at some of the scenes from Shakespeare's plays where they acted, danced and even sang. Congratulations to our Year 9 and 6th Form Football teams, who claimed the titles of West Essex District Champions. Our Year 9 won 2:0 against St Marks and our Sixth Form Team won 3:1 on penalties against Brampton Manor. It was a remarkable achievement, congratulations to our teams for all their hard work and thank you to our PE Department for their time and support with the teams.

On Thursday, our Year 10 girls spent the day in Science, learning about the STEMettes programme. This programme aims to raise awareness to women about the career paths in STEM areas and inspire our students with the opportunities available to them. Throughout the week our Year 11 Art, Photography, Geography and Music students have been taking part in their final practical exams and fieldwork trips. Next week, the GCSEs start for real with the MFL Speaking and Drama practical exams. Today we invited a motivational speaker into school to host their assembly. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all students good luck with these exams and to remind parents that the main exams start on Monday 16th May. Please ensure that your children spend their time wisely as they prepare for these exams. Further in the bulletin you will find full details of the exam timetables for GCSE, As Level and A Level. I have also provided information on how you can support your child through their exam period on our website. https://www.rodingvalley.net/currentparents/how-you-can-help-your-child/ There is subject specific revision information further on in this bulletin. Next week, on Tuesday, our Year 7 students will be taking part in a Study Skills Day. They will be looking at problem solving, literacy, teamwork, revision and growth mindset; it should be an enjoyable day for them. Please can you remind your child that they should come to school in full school uniform and ensure they bring all their equipment and their trainers with them. Ms. S Jenner

Head of School To support their English Literature, on Friday, the Year 11 students will be watching a theatre performance of Macbeth. Thank you if you have paid the voluntary contribution. Please can I ask for your support as these extra opportunities do come at a cost to the school. Have a wonderful weekend

On Thursday 19th April; our Year 10 and 11 GCSE Music Students performed a variety of solos and duets in a performance to showcase their work. The concert featured our students performing a mix of classical, popular music and from musicals. This was a fantastic event, which showcased the talent we have at our school, our students’ achievements and the effort they put into their performances.

Mr. Savage, Head of Music said: "All the students in this group strive to be the very best that they can and always look to improve. This bodes well for the future."

On Monday 23rd April; a group of our Year 13 students presented their final EPQ Presentations to parents, members of the school's Senior Leadership Team and Governors to mark the end of their 12month work on their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

Our students have been studying for their EPQ Qualification, which gives them the opportunity to explore a topic they are passionate about or an issue that is linked to their future aspirations. Each student was required to write a 5,000-word dissertation and give a presentation of their findings, working independently, under supervision. Our Year 13 students presenting their EPQ work were; Matthew Tinker, Kate Laws, Isobel Hooper, Emily Willis, Lily Rowsell, Skye Bramley and Jessica Gallaway.

Mrs. Hodges said: "We are incredibly proud of what the students have achieved. Their topics included 'Dentistry in the Developing World', 'The Impact of Oral Health on other Diseases', 'What Happens to our Social Media When We Die', 'The Future of Shengen', 'The Reputation of Mary Queen of Scots', 'The Role of Women in Classical Literature' and 'The Questionable Guilt of Anne Boleyn'.

On Tuesday 24th April; our Year 7 students were given the opportunity to celebrate the birthday of William Shakespeare, in style. They rubbed shoulders with actors and educational practitioners who have worked in many iconic productions at the world-famous Globe Theatre and were able to demonstrate their skills in school.

The actors put on a series of workshops that looked at some of the scenes from Shakespeare's plays where they acted, danced and even sang.

The day was an absolute success and the actors and the Years 7's had so much fun. Hopefully we can do something similar next year. It's not every day, professional actors come to your school and you get to act with them! Miss. F Williams, Year 7 YPL

On Thursday the 26th April 2018, the Stemettes, who are an organisation that inspire woman in to stem careers, came into our school to enhance our perspective on stem careers, e.g., engineering, scientist, and many more. This day really inspired me to look into a career path that involves stem, because the volunteers were extremely helpful and provided a large amount of information on the different careers and why they are Important. Mrs. Patel organised this day, for the Stemettes to come into the school, this inspired us all and changed our opinions of jobs that involve science. We are looking forward to taking part in more days like this, with Mrs. Patel (my science teacher). Sophie Curtis & Paige Ellicock-Williams 10W

Today we celebrated Women in ICT Day looking at Stem careers in science, technology, engineering and maths. We created a website to encourage more women to start working in the Stem field. We found that there are many different jobs and events to inspire women. Personally, we thought this day has been interesting and we have learnt there is more to Stem jobs than just a science or maths teacher. Ava Packwood, Ella Stevenson, Katie Carter. Earlier today before we attended STEMettes, we were not sure what to expect. However, after today we have learned about the opportunities women have in the science, technology, engineering and maths field and how they are influenced. We have learnt that only 11% of engineers are female and how STEM is trying to encourage more women to do so with STEMettes. Ivy Prutton, Libby Schalm, Olivia Lewis, Sulola Olusesan

It was very pleasing to receive such a positive email from the immunisation team this week who were extremely pleased with how the boys conducted themselves during the vaccinations. Macbeth Performance: Friday 4th May. All Year 11 will see a production of Macbeth performed by the Young Shakespeare Company on Friday period 1 & 2. The cost of this performance is ÂŁ2.50 per student (payable on ParentPay or by cheque). It is a valuable opportunity for students to use this as part of their revision. The Drama exam and the MFL speaking and listening exams have been moved to accommodate the performance, so all students will be able to watch the production.

English Interventions are on Monday’s for those students who have been invited to focus on specific areas from their PPEs. Students should be referring to the pink and blue personal learning checklists in their English exercise books. They should be using them to identify areas they need to work on. They then need to use the purple booklets issued in class to practise their exam technique. English teachers are happy to support students if they bring their questions to them for marking and advice. Students should be reading non-fiction articles. What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision. Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.

MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.
