RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 29th March 2018

“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

Message from the Head of School Thank you to all the parents and students who supported Sports Relief today, at the latest count we had raised £1875.65 for the charity. The students have been excellent and enjoyed the lunchtime activities. Having concluded our student leadership interviews I am delighted to announce our House Captains, please see Page 4 onwards; an overview of all the successful students. It is a very exciting time for the school, we will finalise the House names next term and then launch our first round of House competitions and assemblies. I am really proud of our students, they are a real inspiration. Please ensure that you use the forthcoming Easter holiday to replace any Uniform, equipment or shoes as appropriate. The uniform expectations are included in this bulletin. Please note that black trainers are not acceptable unless worn for specific evidenced medical purposes, all jumpers must be school issue and skirts must be worn below the knee. Where medical evidence is provided then the student is issued with a mauve card which they can show if challenged. This has been discussed with the students in their assemblies this week and non-conformity will be sanctioned. The students’ appearance in our community is very important to the good standing of the school and our uniform is now of a very high standard which I intend to maintain. I thank you for your support in advance, our consistent expectation benefits everyone. If anyone is suffering financial hardship then please do contact Miss Dyer to discuss, we will always do our best to support where we can. The school will be running a programme of support for our GCSE/ A level students during the Easter holidays. I am always so grateful for the excellent and committed staff; who are always prepared to come and support the students at this crucial time. Not all schools offer such a programme and many students find the structure offered invaluable in preparing for their exams and ultimate success. The programme has been emailed to parents and students but is included in this bulletin. This is a period of revision at all levels in the school and revision guides and tips have been emailed to support both parents and students. Please also look on our website in our Teaching and Learning Section under GCSE Revision Resources.

I am delighted to share some of the school’s success this week both academic and sporting. We were placed 5th out of 38 schools in the Pixl Up for Debate competition at Harrow School. This is a massive achievement especially as our amazing team made up of Ruby Coyte (Year 7); Joseph James (Year 7) and Zak Smith (Year 8) were against teams of mainly Year 9s. Zak Smith received the Outstanding Speaker Award for scoring the highest marks out of all 113 debaters. Florence New and Eva Randall also attended the debate as student judges and Eva was selected as a student judge for the final. Roding Valley is looking forward to continuing their debate club and is especially looking forward to competing at the Pixl debate next year. The school continues to grow its reputation as a leading school for debating. https://www.rodingvalley.net/teaching-learning/challenge-enrichment/ I am also delighted that all three Football teams from the lower years have made it through to the West Essex & Harlow Districts Football Finals all to be played in the first week back after the Easter Holidays. Both Year 7 and Year 9 remain unbeaten in their league campaigns. The Year 7s won their latest match against Debden Park High School 10-1. The Year 8s secured their spot in the final after coming back from 2-1 down with 10 minutes left to win 3-2 against West Hatch. Each of the finals will be played at The Grange, Chigwell. https://twitter.com/RodingValleyPE We have just updated the school website with the latest videos showing the new build development. https://www.rodingvalley.net/parents/new-building-2018/ Finally, I wish you all a wonderful Easter break; we return to school on Monday 16th April at normal time. Ms. S Jenner Head of School

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision. Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:

We have also included a link to a very useful guide on how to view your child's due and submitted homework:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.

MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.
