RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect

Endeavour

Week ending: Friday 3rd May 2018 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

Message from the Head of School The summer term is now in full swing and at last the sunshine is coming back, hopefully to stay. Our older students are in the final stages of their exam preparation and a reminder of the dates for study leave: Year 11: Year 12: Year 13: Friday May 18th

Friday 11th May

Friday 25th May

Please note that these are the dates that study leave commences, there will still be teachers available to support the students right the way through their exam period. Details of the support offered and teacher availability will be emailed separately. The Year 12s will return to us on Monday 11th June to continue with their studies. Our Year 11s and 10s enjoyed a production of Macbeth today; this was organised to support them as this is one of the main texts for the English Literature exam. They all seemed to really enjoy it and hopefully it brought the play to life for them. If you are a Year 10 parent, please note that it is the Year 10 Parents’ Evening on Thursday 10th May; please do encourage your child to make appointments with their teachers. This is your opportunity to have a face to face meeting and discuss your child’s progress. The Year 7s have an assessment week commencing on the 14th May, their teachers should have shared their expectations of these in-class progress tests with your child. They all thoroughly enjoyed their study skills day and especially enjoyed the problem solving and sessions on developing a growth mindset. I believe that it is very important that we nurture the values of a growth mindset and help our students develop the resilience and belief in themselves to constantly improve. Developing a growth mindset is fundamental to our Teaching and Learning ACED framework here at Roding Valley; something I want to continue to develop across the school community. As Dr Carol Dweck wrote, “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment”.

We have also just launched our ‘Respect Challenge’ for our year 7 and 8 students. Students will be able to gain additional 'good manners' progress points from teachers. The year group at the end of the half term who have received the most progress points will be treated to an extended lunch on Friday the 25th of May. I am delighted that our Duke of Edinburgh scheme has been launched so successfully. Many students have now taken part in both Bronze and Silver expeditions and we plan to further increase participation next year. Please contact Courtney Edwards; cedwards@rodingvalley.net if you would like more information. There are photos and write ups from the students later in the bulletin. All parents are invited to the Parent Forum on Monday 14th May. At this session we will showcase and explain some of the principles of Maths Mastery, which is now embedded in our curriculum. It is having a positive impact on the attainment in Maths and the students who have studied Maths Mastery are far better equipped to answer the problem-solving questions posed in the new 9-1 Maths GCSE. The forum will be in the Sixth Form Centre at 6pm. The PTA have organised another Shopping and Pamper Evening on Friday 15th June 2018, 7pm 10pm in the Main Hall. They still have pitches available so if you know anyone who would like to sell items or complete treatments during the evening please ask them to contact Natalie Sellears, nsellears@rodingvalley.net Pitches are £10.00 for the evening. Your support would be greatly Ms. S Jenner appreciated; all money raised will be used to benefit all of the students at the school. Head of School I am also pleased to report that our ‘new build’ remains on schedule and will be fully operational in September. This will provide a new sixth form study area to complement the existing one and new state of the art learning rooms. The new full size 3G pitch on the playing fields is now complete and the students will be able to use it from Tuesday. If you happen to be on Loughton station platform, you can see the scale of the new, very impressive facility. Ms. S Jenner Please note that Forest Casuals are now stocking Headalso of School girls PE shorts. Some girls had expressed a desire to wear shorts for certain sports. They are not compulsory but offered alongside the existing skort. Please enjoy the rest of the bulletin; it is a wealth of information about our school. I thank you for your continued support and hope that you all have a lovely bank holiday weekend. Mrs. S Jenner Head of School

Last weekend, a group of 7 students and I embarked on a 3-day expedition through the countryside of Henley-on-Thames, just north of Reading. We were completing our ‘expedition’ part of our Duke of Edinburgh Silver award, having finished our practice expedition just a month before. Our set out goal was to walk at least 14km for 7 hours, per day, for 3 days and carry all the food, water, clothes and tent equipment (now I look back a see how we even managed it); we were also tasked with a project – our groups was photography –which we had to complete during the hike. Day 1 started at 10 am, when we were abandoned by the side of the road, to get started. It was a fairly leisurely walk, apart from the ever-draining weight of our backpacks, nothing much happened besides stopping the other group from getting lost. The fun happened when we got to the campsite, settled down, and after a brief poker game with 8 people in a 3-man tent; we went to get some kip. That’s when the most violent thunderstorm I have ever witnessed bundled over to ruin a (not so good) night’s sleep. Lasting over an hour, we bared witness to a quite frightening series of thunder and lightning, with each strike of lightening the tents up like a 100w bulb – apparently some nearby campers were blown away by the gale force winds! It’s fair to say we didn’t get much sleep. Onward to the second dreaded day, after some delicious bagels and jam, we encountered our 8 hours, 17km route that was extremely hilly and terrible. Starting off on a high note, our checkpoint planner, who shall remain anonymous, read the wrong day’s checkpoint (yes, the wrong day!), leading us to believe we were half-an-hour behind, when we were half-an-hour early! Apart from the glorious sunshine and awesome views, our day went downhill from there – what a beautiful weekend! Our last day was much nicer; we walked together almost as one group for the whole day, whilst walking down the Thames. Thankfully, our instructors were feeling benevolent that day, and shortened our route, seen as the second day was ‘extra’ long. It was more of a sprint finish than another 12km, just a few hours we had to get through before we could go home – god I had missed Netflix! Our journey finished at 3-ish on Monday, with our feet pulsing and backs breaking; we could finally go home. I guess you could say I had a good time, with good people, if you forget the almost 50km we had to trek.

On Friday 27th April the groups that were taking part on that weekends expedition had a drop down period five to organise route cards, plan route and shop for food. We all went to Sainsbury's as a group and prepared the meals we would eat on the trip.

The next day on the 28th April four Duke of Edinburgh groups set out to their expedition. We all met at Chelmsford bowling alley club with our packed rucksacks and waterproof clothing as it was raining. At around 10:15am each group set off on their 6 hour walk to the campsite. The walk was the route we had planned the day before and was not supervised by an adult until we met and different checkpoints throughout the day.

When we got to the campsite we put up our tents, cooked our meals and socialised until it was time to head to our tents. It was an early start the next morning at around 6:30am for another day of walking. But first, we put down our tents, packed up our bags and cooked another meal (breakfast). Then at approximately 8:30am the groups set off for 6 hours of walking until reaching our final destination where, relieved, we met our parents.

English Iintervention’s are on Monday’s for those students who have been invited to focus on specific areas from their PPEs. Students should be referring to the pink and blue personal learning checklists in their English exercise books. They should be using them to identify areas they need to work on. They then need to use the purple booklets issued in class to practise their exam technique. English teachers are happy to support students if they bring their questions to them for marking and advice. Students should be reading non-fiction articles. The academic year is almost over and the honeymoon period of terms 1 and 2 are all but distant memories at this stage. The only thing looming on the horizon is the evitable exam period which we have now entered. There is still plenty of time, however, to get on top of your workload and to do well. Follow some of the exam tips below to defeat the exams from UCL.

1

Prioritize Your Workload Get to grips with what exams you have, what knowledge you need and what time you have. Familiarise yourself with the type of questions asked and build a revision list based on exam questions. Tutors for teaching staff may have given some tips about the exam - prioritise these subject areas. List your exams in chronological order and begin the offensive!

2

Consolidate what you already know The night before an exam isn’t the time to start reading up on a brand-new topic. Remember exams aren’t there to catch you out: they exist to see what you know already. Focus on a few key areas that you’ve covered well instead of spreading yourself thin across the entire course. Be smart about what topics you choose to revise.

3

Create a timetable - and stick to it. A regular revision pattern will help your confidence as well as ensuring you don’t burn out. Draw up a plan according to your exam timetable and be disciplined in obeying it. You can get a lot achieved in a day’s work so scheduling a normal working day of 9am - 5pm with a break in the morning, lunch and an afternoon break is a lot more beneficial than telling yourself that you’ll study for the day; and spending half the time watching videos on YouTube but staying at your desk until 11pm.

Ban access to the internet / mobile phones/ social media unless it’s work-related but allow yourself to visit Facebook etc. in your break time. When 5pm rolls around, put down the books and take the evening off to do what you want. If you have spent the day doing quality revision then you have earned your time off and will feel good in yourself. Remember, it’s the quality and not quantity of your study hours.

16 | Page

Maintain a balanced lifestyle

4

Exams are important, but it’s equally salient to take time out to relax and to maintain a connection with the real world as well as getting enough sleep and eating properly. Your mind needs to rest too so plan breaks into your day and don’t cut sport out of your life. Exercise is a great way to unwind, relieve stress and leave you feeling motivated - you can easily slot in a quick 20-minute walk or jog into your day which will break you out of the revision monotony. A full night’s sleep is also important and necessary to help you maintain concentration during the day.

5

5. Don’t panic! If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the work you have to do or feel that there isn’t enough time, you might not feel like stepping away from your desk but a short break will help settle your mind and return you to normalcy. Succumbing to negative thinking happens to us all from time to time, but we can overcome it and return our minds to positive vibes. Give a friend a call and talk about non-exam related matters; have a laugh and let the weight be lifted from your shoulders. Ten minutes now won’t harm your study continuum but will improve your attitude and motivation.

These tips were provided through our networking with University College London (UCL). UCL continues to rank seventh in the world this year, making it London’s highest-ranked university for three years in a row. UCL calls itself London’s Global University and this is certainly reflected in its oncampus diversity, with more than 15,500 of its 38,900 students coming from outside the UK.

At RVHS, we use Show My Homework; an account has been created for you to keep up to date with your child’s homework progress from home.

What is ‘Show My Homework’? Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due.

How to Log In?  Go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/pin What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. After logging in for the first time users will be asked to provide more memorable login details for future use. PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget these logins.

 Or you can download the app.  Enter your PIN details that you have been given in the letter provided by your school.  Click ‘Log in’  Create a memorable password and enter your email address then click ‘Update you details’.

Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.

You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child. If yourself or your child experience any difficulties with using ‘Show my Homework’ or you no longer have your pin, please contact Mrs. Hodges: jhodges@rodingvalley.net

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision. Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.

MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.
