RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration

Respect Endeavour

Week ending: Friday 8th June 2018 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

Message from the Head of School Welcome back to the final half term of the academic year. This week the public exams for GCSE, AS and A Level are now in full swing and the Year 9s have started their GCSE Option subjects. Earlier in the week, you will have received a letter from Mr. Tony Barritt (Chair of Governors), informing you that Roding Valley High School is now part of The Chelmsford Learning Partnership, this message can also be found below. This is an exciting time for the school and will benefit the students and staff as we further develop the links between the schools that make up the partnership. This week we had a Year 5 Sports and Creative Arts morning - more information is on page 3. As well as this, Miss Wybrant and Mrs Patel took "Science on the Road" and visited Thomas Willingale School. Next week, we are going to be piloting an earlier start for lunch with Year 7. This will give them a longer lunch time and enhance the opportunity for extracurricular clubs during lunch time. Part of this will mean that the Year 7s will be taken down to the new 3G pitch on the field and have the opportunity to play a variety of sports and other enrichment activities. The Choir will continue on Wednesday lunchtimes under the guidance of our new music teacher Miss Self. The Sixth Form charity draw winner for the signed West Ham shirt was Penny Spence 10X and this raised £273 for Cancer research, Brain tumor charity and GOSH. Their next event is the final performance of Roding’s Got Talent on Thursday 28th June 2018 to continue raising money for these charities. Full details will be out soon. On Monday 11th June, Year 12 students return from their study leave to continue their A Level studies, this will include sitting exams for the subjects that they didn't sit external AS exams for. Please refer to the timetable that was previously sent out. Year 10 will have their end of year exams during the week commencing 18th June, the overview timetable for this can be found on page 10. Please note a date change for Sports Day; this will now be Wednesday 18th July.

Mrs. S Jenner Head of School

Message from the Chair of Governors I am pleased to confirm that our conversion to academy status has been successfully completed. As a result, Roding Valley High School (RVHS) is now part of the Chelmsford Learning Partnership (CLP). As we have previously stated, the Governing Body at RVHS believe that joining a Multi Academy Trust is the best way forward for our school and we are delighted that we have now become part of our first choice of academy trust. Whilst the new structure will bring many benefits for students and employees in the future it is very unlikely that anyone will notice anything different on a day to day basis. It is very much business as usual, with the emphasis at the moment firmly on helping our students prepare and take their GCSE and A Level examinations. Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank everyone at RVHS and CLP who have made our conversion relatively smooth and straightforward. A tremendous amount of work has gone on behind the scenes and the Governors are very grateful for everyone’s help and, in particular, the way that the whole process has been completed with minimal disruption to the school. Mr. Tony Barritt Chair of Governors

This week, Year 5 students from Whitebridge Primary School had the opportunity to experience some of the activities we offer to our students at Roding Valley High School. The Year 5's had the choice between an hour of Music and Art or an hour of PE and Drama. In PE the students were able to use our Astro and were introduced to the sport of Ultimate Frisbee, developing their team work skills and learning the basic principles and rules of the game. The Year 5 students were supported by some of our Year 7 girls. Students touched on some drama skills while exploring the theme of circus. We learnt the basics of mime skills and devised a mimed juggling act, considering focus and muscle tension. Then we explored how to move in an animalistic manner by studying video footage of animals, then devising a circus animal act with a ring-master narrating. In Art, we did a practical introduction to ‘Polyboard Printing’. They created print blocks based upon the school logos of Whitebridge and Roding Valley and used printing inks to create their own single colour images. The Students worked really hard and everyone walked away with their own piece of simple art work. We also took a little tour of the exhibition space so they could see some of our outstanding GCSE work.

In music the students were able to use our Mac books and become familiar with the Logic sequencing software. From this they were able to experiment with different sounds and they recorded their own playing.

All students walked away from the day with a huge smile on their face saying how much they had enjoyed the morning.

In Years 7 to 9, pupils ‘Drop Everything and Read’ for 20 minutes in every school day. Strong literacy is key to success in all subject areas and reading each day promotes this. Reading regularly improves spelling, punctuation and grammar, all of which are assessed in a number of subject areas on the new 9-1 specifications. We also want to encourage a love of reading for pleasure and have asked our Year 7s to write book reviews to share with you what they are reading during DEAR Time. This week we feature 3 reviews from 7S. Enjoy! Dear DEAR Time, I have been reading the Stars of the Oktober Bend by Karen Gillan. This book is about Alice Nightingale, a fifteen year old girl who has experienced a traumatic incident, which has left her with a speech disorder, as a result of acquired brain damage. She writes poems and leaves them in random places in Oktober Bend, which end up with her meeting Manny James, whose home was destroyed before he came here and them falling in love. I enjoyed this book because, unlike other first person stories, it doesn’t just show what the character sees, hears, touches, tastes and smells, but reflects how she thinks and I love her amazing poems. I would give it 5/5. Written by Skye Salek-Haddadi 7V

Dear DEAR Time, Dear Dear Time, I have been reading The Chamber of Secrets by J.K.Rawling. This book is about Harry Potter on one of his adventures. Being scared of Sirius Black, but finding out news that would stay with him forever. Being able to go back in time with Hermaine to fix the past and let someone free, who he thought was a evil and horrible man.

I have been reading Friend Request by Laura Marshall. This book is about a woman called Louise, who receives a friend request from Maria, but Maria’s dead, isn’t she?

I enjoyed this book because it was full of great description and always kept me on the edge of my seat with its exciting cliff hangers.

Louise’s past is revealed and we begin to find out what happened to Maria, what Louise and her friends did to Maria. I enjoyed this book because it reels me in and makes me want to know what happened to Maria.

I would give it a 5/5

Year 7 We are almost there! I cannot believe where the time has gone and that we are at the start of the final half term of Year 7. Ahead of us is one of the busiest, but exciting half terms with Sports Day, reward trips and the residential trip to name a few events.

Skye Salek- Haddadi “For writing a beautiful poem which has been entered into a national competition- good luck Skye!

Going into the last half term, I really want to stress to Year 7 the importance of maintaining standards and expectations both within the classroom and out. Students still need to dress smartly and appropriately in their uniform; effort in lessons should continue to be high and homework to continue to be completed to their best level.

With the launch of our 3rd generation pitch, we need to ensure that these pitches are maintained following the Governing body guidelines and insist that pupil’s wear Astro’s or moulded stud boots when using the facility. Please note it is part of school PE kit and all students are expected to have these to use in PE lesson. Please note that Astro trainers pictured below can be worn in all PE lessons. Below are some examples and where to purchase these from. https://www.sportsdirect.com/football/football-boots/astro-trainers

On Wednesday 6th June, the Year 9/10 Tennis team took part in their final match within the group stages against Bancrofts School. This was the deciding game on which team finished top of the group. The Roding Valley team stormed to victory winning their singles and doubles games at ease. This has resulted in us finishing top of the group and progressing to the semi-finals where we now face the Belfairs Academy on Wednesday 13th June. Good luck to the boys!

At RVHS, we use Show My Homework; an account has been created for you to keep up to date with your child’s homework progress from home.

What is ‘Show My Homework’? Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due.

How to Log In?  Go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/pin What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. After logging in for the first time users will be asked to provide more memorable login details for future use. PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget these logins.

 Or you can download the app.  Enter your PIN details that you have been given in the letter provided by your school.  Click ‘Log in’  Create a memorable password and enter your email address then click ‘Update you details’.

Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.

You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child. If yourself or your child experience any difficulties with using ‘Show my Homework’ or you no longer have your pin, please contact Mrs. Hodges: jhodges@rodingvalley.net

Whatis DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision. Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:

We have also included a linkto a very useful guide on how to view your child's due and submitted homework:

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.

MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left. But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab.The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up.
