RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 21st December 2018 “Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
Message from the Head of School A time to reflect…. I would like to thank all parents for their ongoing support of the school during this incredibly busy autumn term. We have seen the opening of the new Brook Building, which is now a fully utilised, integral part of the school. The students are making excellent use of the facilities and have also been enjoying the new 3G pitches. Our Year 7s and Year 12s have settled incredibly well into their respective year groups and our school community continues to flourish, we are now full in most year groups. We enjoyed significantly improved A Level results last summer and it was a real pleasure to have so many of our alumni join us last night for the KS5 Awards. It was a great opportunity to celebrate in their successes whilst here at the school. Many were recounting stories of their first terms at university and others joined the celebrations straight from work. It is very interesting to hear about their fantastic opportunities on the varied higher level apprenticeships. Our school community is diverse and it was great to feel that Roding Valley spirit; seeing the successful, well rounded individuals that they have all become. It was a very proud evening for the school and I also thank Mr Stephen Murray, who came in his Mayor of Loughton capacity, to present the prestigious Murray Award. Please see the article later in the bulletin for some lovely photographs from the evening. Last week, we also hosted our KS4 Awards evening where we recognised the fantastic achievement of our GCSE students. We are delighted that so many of the highest achieving students have chosen to stay with us for their sixth form studies. We served over 600 Christmas dinners on Wednesday 12th December. The staff and students thoroughly enjoyed the spread and thank you to Pat, our catering manager for providing such a scrumptious Christmas meal. It was lovely to see so many of our Year 11 students taking advantage of this, in previous years they would have missed out as they took their lunches off site.

There have been numerous enrichment and reward events in these last few weeks and they are detailed in this bulletin. The House system in now fully entrenched in our daily routine. Our recent success with the Food bank appeal is evidence of how healthy inter-house competition can promote respect and support the welling being of others. The students here, made the largest single contribution ever, to the Epping Forest Food bank. It was fantastic to hear the school and our Head Girl, Grace Cain being publically praised on national Heart Radio by Jamie Theakston himself! The school has made huge progress this academic year and we continue to work hard to raise the standards of academic outcomes and conduct. We are having a punctuality drive, so please support the school in our rigorous approach to lateness. The school uniform is now worn with pride and I regularly receive positive comments from the local community and visitors on the smartness of our uniform. Please can I remind parents that the House tie is a compulsory part of the school uniform from January. Many of our students will have grown since the summer, please can you also check the length of the girl’s skirts, and they should be worn below the knee. All students should be wearing black leather shoes, trainers are not permitted unless as part of a medical protocol. Only leaves me to say, ‘have a very Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year’ I trust that you will all enjoy some quality time with your family and friends. Best wishes and see you in 2019! Mrs Sharon Jenner Head of School
Please can Parents remind our students that all Mobile Phones should be switched off at all times throughout the school day. If they are seen or heard by a member of school staff, they will be confiscated.
The schools main form of communication with parents is by email. If you are not receiving emails from the school, you can: Check your Spam and move the last school email to your Inbox. The Food & Nutrition department was a hive of activity on Wednesday as they held a Christmas Workshop - decorating and wrapping individual festive cakes. Mrs Abbott demonstrated icing and decorating techniques to over 30 students, plus a few teachers who could not resist learning a new skill. A fun couple of hours was had by all, and everyone took home their own wrapped cake!
This week our Year 11 and 12 students attended workshops by Oxbridge and Russell Group University, where they spent time learning about the skills they will need to continue on to University.

On Thursday 13th December, twenty one year 11 students were selected to go on the maths in action trip in the famous Emmanuel centre. This was a series of enriching lectures to give greater understanding of how the study of mathematics can lead to a wide range of career choices.
We had five lecturers each with their own different perspectives and personal experiences with their choices in mathematics. We were all presented with puzzles and riddles throughout the many lectures, as well as an enthusiastic maths rap from one of the energetic speakers. It was a successful trip that educated us on the different branches of mathematics. All twenty one students came away from the trip with more knowledge about the different paths that they could choose from in the near future. Written by Isabella Dreher 11T
On Friday 14th December, our Year 10 students enjoyed a wonder performance of a Christmas Carol. This is an exam text, which they have been studying this term. Watching a live performance was really useful for highlighting the key themes and ideas of the book.

Year 11 and 12 girls had an inspirational day at Ernst and Young offices in central London. Students had the opportunity to speak to a number of professionals about their experience in the field and gave hints and tips on how to succeed in the world of business. Students also worked on their own projects, with the RVHS winning team presenting a solution to technological exclusion in poverty stricken areas of the world.
On Monday 17th December, we celebrated the huge success of the summer 2018 A levels. Welcoming back many of our ex-students to collect their awards. It was a wonderful evening.

Today, Medical Mavericks were in leading an interactive workshops on various NHS careers, and allowing students to appreciate various pieces of scientific equipment, such as using an ultrasound machine, performing key hole surgery, taking their blood pressure and ECG'S. Students involved from Years 9-11 were all engaged, and for some even got them thinking about future STEM careers they could go into. It was a worthwhile experience for our students.
Today during 3rd period; me and other students in year 10 were able to experience different tools they use in the NHS this consisted of taking lung volume , blood pressure and using Ultra Sound to look inside the body. I also found out that there are lots of career options in the NHS that do not require such high end grades. I would like to learn more about being a Health Care Assistant as this session has inspired me to want to find out more. Written by Alexi Prime Year 10
Today was helpful because we learnt about how to do different procedures on patients that they do in hospital, also there was different career options and it wasn’t always about being a grade 9 so there is other careers for people out there who are not a grade 9 but want to be part of NHS. I recommend this to my friends and future students. I might consider looking at different options for my career. Thank you Mrs Patel. Written by Rhianna Blackman
Today we had a stem event about different careers in the NHS and different equipment that you could use if you work in the NHS. It was really informative, especially as I find a career in health really interesting and possibly a future option for me. It was really fun as we were allowed to go around with our friends and try the specialist equipment out. I would definitely recommend something like this happening again. Written by Jessica Okaka

Message from Mr. Dobson As the longest term of the year draws to a close I want to wish everyone a restful and enjoyable Christmas, please be safe over the festive period and I look forward to seeing all our Year 7s bright and cheerful on January 7th 2019!. I would like to dedicate the next few pages to our wonderful Year 7s who all term have shown Aspiration, Respect and Endeavour. For some of you parents and carers of Year 7 this will be mascara moment.
At the beginning of the year I was frightened when I started at Roding Valley. Why you ask? It was like a small fish going from a pond into the ocean. But with the help of my lovely form tutor and teachers I made it through one of the best terms ever! My form, 7x, have won career of the month 2 times. Our year progress leader, Mr Dobson, also helped a lot. My first term was amazing and I hope it stays that way! Written by Alistair Lanz 7x
My first term at Roding valley has been a blast; I have met new people, learnt loads and represented the school on many occasions. On my very first day I was very nervous and wanted to go back to primary although I fought through and it turned out to be great. There's so much more freedom at Roding than there probably is at any other school across the whole world, plus the teachers are kind and caring towards everybody. Written by Daniel Carter 7x
Overall, my first term at Roding has been a blast. Although some thing are NOT!!! A blast. My new form tutor (Miss Kalay) is alright, she’s not the best and she’s not the worst. Written by William Foot 7V
My first term at Roding Valley was amazing; I met lots of new people that are now my friends. I have represented my school once at a rugby tournament and won. My first day was scary, but exciting because I couldn't wait to meet the new teachers and children. Written by Alex Ellis 7T
The very first day was frightening however I became used to it as I went on. All the teachers and students were very kind to me (especially the older kids) so I felt comfortable in the environment; Mr Dobson was casually complimenting my name even though he couldn't pronounce my name properly. It was funny to see the way my name was said but I guess it was by accident. The school was massive and even now it amazes me. My first term at Roding Valley High School was amazing and I hope it stays this way. Written by Thais Alberto 7U

My first term was really different to how it was in primary school. I enjoyed meeting new teachers and new friends also I really enjoyed helping teachers at lunch time. I love having different types of lessons like Food Tech because in primary we were not allowed near fire or knives because it was` Dangerous`. Written by Kamile Liutkeviciute 7Q
I think that my first term at Roding Valley was great and that the lessons are great and I have made a lot of friends here. Thanks to the staff and older students I have settled in very well and my Progress Leader, he has sorted things out well, things that have been wrong at school. In school I have found that when you are in year 7 you have to be more independent and you have to work harder and we get a lot of homework. We are lucky to get an early lunch and we have many choices at lunch like pasta and lunch in the lunch hall and we have the Astro all for the whole of Year seven and we have are new building called Brook Building and inside is the new library and the language department and are very own lockers. Written by Danny Robertson and Lily Griffin 7S
My first term at Roding Valley has been good I feel that the teachers are very supportive and helpful. It has been a big change from my old school but after a few days you know your way around like the back of your hand. My favourite lesson is Music and Art because I love creativity and playing instruments, my least favourite subject is Maths because I find it quite boring and very long. Also, Mr Dobson is a very helpful Head of Year and a great Geography teacher. Overall Roding Valley High School is a very good school and I recommend everyone to go there. Written by Eleanor Ward 7u and Freddie Bayless 7T
Our first term has been full of ups and downs. Our good times have been very good but our downs have been bad. One of the bad things is always having to move to each different class every day; I accidentally left my bag in a different room of the other side of the school. I think another bad thing is that we get to much homework. Sometimes I’m up until 11 o'clock still doing my homework. I think that we should have one piece per night to do. Another bad thing is that we have to always be quiet in class. Some teachers are nice but some I really don't like. One of the good things is that we get early lunch (20 minutes to be exact); I will miss it when we move to year 8. Another good thing is all of the new people we have met. On the first day I was excited but a little bit nervous, but after a few hours I got used to it and realised it wasn't that bad. Now I think that I would rather stay at this school rather than my old school. Overall, my first term of Roding was successful and fun. Although I have to sit next to the most annoying person in the world, my form tutor (Miss Garip) is the best form tutor in the world. I have really enjoyed my first term at Roding. My first impression of the school was that it was massive, but I soon gotten used to. I really enjoy the lesson because you do a lot more things than primary. I enjoy PE the most because you learn a lot of skill for different sports, I have mad loads of memories at Roding so far and I hope to make more. Written by Libby Spencer 7Q
My first term at Roding Valley was extremely enjoyable. The teachers have helped me when I did not understand. I have improved greatly in all subjects and I have made great friends. I love Roding Valley high school so far. Written by Isabelle Frost 7R
My first term has been fun; I have learnt a lot of stuff and made a few friends. I like the teachers and my favourite subject is PE because I like doing physical things. My friends are in loads of my classes. I do not like school dinners but the baguette a nice. I miss my old friends from primary but I see them on the weekend. Written by Calum Buckley 7S
My first term at Roding Valley went better than expected. Originally, I anticipated that I would struggle and I would fail to make friends. This was reinforced by the fact that none of my old friends were coming here.
I found some things hard but the teachers made it fun for me to settle in to the school. Also I was struggling to make friends because none of my old friends came but I eventually made some even better ones and they made me feel very welcome.
However I did not expect how friendly and welcoming everyone was. I hardly knew anyone yet they made everyone feel as though we knew each other. I really do feel I belong here. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Roding Valley has been good. It’s made me make new friendships. There has been funny moments like when I nearly fell down the stairs and hard moments when I did not know away around the school so I got later for quite a lot of classes. I have learnt a lot of topics and it’s very different to my old primary school because there were not a lot of people in our school. I have found some sports I thought I would not like such as Netball and Football. I do not believe in God but I really like Religious Study. I’m well behaved in lessons and nice to all my teachers. I am very happy to be a part of this school. This school has taught me a lot of things and its nothing like primary, this is the real world. I help the teachers and I always listen to them. You do have to work harder in secondary even though that might be a challenge. In primary you did not get a lot of homework but now we do all from different lessons. We are lucky to have food dinners. Thank you for reading. Written by Sunnie Dyer 7V
On first day I was a little bit nervous, but it was only year 7's so I felt comfortable. At first I didn't really know my way around the school, but after a few weeks I got to know it and learn my way round. In the middle of the term I moved classes and had to learn where all my new classes, where again. Now I know my way round and have made new friend from my classes. I've learnt a lot more in High School than I did in primary school.
High School is harder to learn in but I've learnt a lot of new things. Roding Valley is a really good School and helped me with my transition.

Christmas Message from Miss Williams Year 8 have made a great start to their second year at Roding Valley. The vast majority have shown increasing maturity towards their studies and improving attitude to learning. With the long-term goal of higher education in mind, this year is all about getting themselves into positive habits and routines. The attitude to learning grades in their reports show that some still have room for improvement and that coasting is no longer an option. The punctuality of our year group has improved, however attendance of the year group still needs to be a priority. I would like to encourage our students to keep up with their independent learning over the holidays and start to consider what they will need to do to prepare for their February exams. We wish all of our students a restful holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone back and rejuvenated in the New Year.

Message from Mr Ryan As we approach the holidays and the ‘Options’ process gets closer. I thought it would be good to start having conversations with students about what they would like to do when they leave school after Year 13. It is lovely to hear how ambitious the Year group are. Many would like to be lawyers, doctors or work in the city. What the students need to know is what qualifications, especially GCSEs; they need to pursue these careers. I thought I would look into the top skills that employers are looking for.
1
1.
Positive Attitude: Having a positive attitude is like showing up to your team’s game ready to give it your best, excited and ready to go even if the chances of winning are low and it’s going to be hard work.
2.
Communication: You have good communication skills if you can listen well, you can ask for what you want clearly and you are not afraid to ask if you do not understand something.
2
3.
3
Teamwork: Teamwork is just like when you are playing netball or performing in your band. You help each other to get what you want, you make sure you do your part, you get on with everyone Olivia Bird and you respect your coach or manager.
4 4.
Self-management: When you manage yourself, you are in control of what you do and say in a way that does not harm yourself or others. You turn up to school or work on time, in the right clothes and ready to start, and people can rely on you.
5 5.
Willingness to Learn: Willingness to learn is showing that you’re happy to learn new things and what you need to know to do your job. It also means that when, for example, your coach says that you need to work on your passes, you do not get too upset, but take it calmly and try hard to do better.
6.
Thinking Skills (problem solving and decision-making): Using thinking skills means that if you see a problem, you do not wait for someone else; you find a way to fix it. When you make a decision, such as what to do when you leave school, you think carefully about all your choices and ask for advice.
7.
Resilience: Maybe you have worked really hard on that particular project and got a ‘2’ and feel like giving up? It is about being able to change, ask for help and keep going.

These are seven skills that make people desirable and link perfectly with PiXL Edge and this is why we really need to push the PiXL Edge Challenges. Over the next few weeks, I would like to ask Parents to have a conversation with your child about what they want to do in the future and look at what challenges they can complete to give them that edge. Congratulations to all the named students, who have been named for being the star of the term by their teachers.
Message from Mr Price It has been another busy term for year 11 and hasn’t it flown by! The students will have received or be receiving their PPE results over the next few days. It is essential that all students have a plan of action to improve on these when the second set of PPE’s come around in February. The school will be putting on lots of support classes and interventions which all year 11s should be taking advantage of. I hope all students have a lovely Christmas break and return in January refreshed and ready to continue the hard work towards achieving the GCSE results they truly deserve.
Taking regular study breaks and exercising is proven to engaging your brain in studying and improve your exam performance in the long-run.

What is ‘Show My Homework’? Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due. How to Log In? Go to What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. After logging in for the first time users will be asked to provide more memorable login details for future use. PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget these logins.
Or you can download the app. Enter your PIN details that you have been given in the letter provided by your school. Click ‘Log in’ Create a memorable password and enter your email address then click ‘Update you details’.
Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.
You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child. If yourself or your child experience any difficulties with using ‘Show my Homework’ or you no longer have your pin, please contact Mrs. Hodges: jhodges@rodingvalley.net Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @humsrvhs @rodingvalleyPE RODING VALLEY DRAMA@rodingdrama
What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.
Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

School Communications: We have been communicating by email for over a year now in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.
MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website. Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App.
But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab. The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself.
