“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.

RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Friday 10th January 2020 Message from the Headteacher I would like to wish a Happy New Year to everyone in the Roding Valley Community and say that I am very pleased to see that our students have returned to the new school term fully rested and are making a positive start to the New Year. Thank you to all of the parents/carers that have ensured that our students have returned to school with the correct school uniform and are fully equipped for their lessons. th

I would like to remind our Year 11 Parents that Year 11 Parents Evening is on Thursday 16 January and begins at 4:30pm; please can you ensure that your child makes their appointments with their teachers as this is a good opportunity for you discuss their progress in anticipation of their GCSE exams starting in May. Year 11 Parents need to be aware that the deadline for applications to our Sixth Form is 20th January. If your child has not applied yet, then please encourage them to do so over the weekend. Our Sixth Form Application can be found on our school website. We look forward to receiving their applications.

Next week we will be welcoming 45 Chinese students to our school from a High School affiliated with the Shandong University. The students will be paired with around 150 of our students that have volunteered from Year 8 to 10. Our students are looking forward to greeting our visitors in Mandarin and welcoming them into our school community. Please can I remind parents/carers of the importance of attendance and punctuality; there is a direct correlation between attendance and student outcomes, with punctuality being an important life skill and attribute of a successful individual. At RVHS, any student that is late to school is expected to serve a detention at lunch time. Our next PTA meeting on Monday 13th January at 7.00pm, please can all parents/carers involved meet at main reception at 6.55pm. If you would like to join our PTA, please contact Miss Sellears on nsellears@rodingvalley.net Lastly, as the weather suggests snow, I must mention our alternative arrangements in the case of severe weather. If heavy snow or other severe weather results in dangerous conditions, I may decide not to open the school. We will announce this through two platforms; Roding Valley High School website and Twitter. Kindest Regards Mrs. S Jenner - Headteacher.

Sixth Form Application Deadline Please can I remind all Year 11 Students that the deadline for submitting your completed application to our Sixth Form closes on 20th January 2020.

Our Student voice met this week to prepare for the launch of their anti-bullying initiative- they are leading whole school assemblies and staff briefing - including the showing of a wonderful video they made of staff speaking about who students can talk to @ RVHS if they need to.

Thank you to all the students who have already taken the time to fill out the form. Once this deadline passes, we will then start inviting applicants for interviews with a member of the Senior Leadership Team. These will take place up until Easter, as we want to be able to give students the time they need to discuss their choices and ask any questions they might have. If you have any questions regarding the application form, please contact us as sixthformoffice@rodingvalley.net. Please use this this link to open our Application Form: If you would like to view our Sixth Form Prospectus, please use this link. We look forward to receiving your application and meeting you all at interview.

Sleep Matters Sleep may be the last thing on your mind but here are some reasons why you should give it a little more thought:  The right amount of sleep will make it easier to maintain a healthy weight.  Sleep deprivation can make it hard to concentrate and remember things – the last thing you need when you are in an exam situation!  You are more likely to feel down when you are tired.  Growth hormones are released when you are asleep.  Getting a good night’s sleep can help you to cope better with the stress of life such as exams, parents and relationships.  Lack of sleep can cause havoc with your skin and result in spots and pimples. Here are a few possible reasons why your child may be finding it difficult to sleep:  Your body clock alters in your teen years which means that waking and sleeping times get later and later. You will probably find that you prefer to stay up late at night but struggle to get up in the morning. This is normal. Getting into a good routine can help with this.  According to some research using “screens” before you go to bed can double the length of time it takes you to fall asleep as it suppresses the production of your sleep hormone, melatonin. Ditch your phone, tablet or Xbox in the hour leading up to your bedtime.  The school day may start early for you which means that you have to get up before your body has had enough sleep. However, being overtired makes it even more difficult to fall asleep. Unfortunately, we can’t change the time that school starts but what you can do is have a regular sleep and wake up time to help your body to cope better with the early mornings.  Your diet may impact on your night-time sleep. Fuelling yourself with energy drinks can mean it is harder to nod off. Likewise reaching for sugary snacks to give you that much needed energy boost can increase the chance of a restless night. And not getting right the amount of sleep can make you gain weight.  You may be feeling stressed with exams looming. It is really important to share your worries with somebody or even write down any concerns. Try to find ways of relaxing in the evening.  You may be uncomfortable, and this makes falling asleep more difficult. Is your mattress and pillows providing you with enough support? Is your bedding comfortable? If not, it’s important to let your parents know. Is your child getting enough sleep? Use the Sleep Council’s Interactive Bedroom to find out what could be helping or hindering your teenagers sleep. Make sure you are also getting enough sleep yourself and if you need inspiration try the 30-Day Better Sleep Plan.

Message for Year 8 Parents Happy New Year 2020 to all staff, students, parents/carers and the wider community. I am sure that this will be an exciting term, year and decade for everyone at RVHS. Can I bring to your attention to the ‘Revision Skills Workshop’ morning that is taking place in school on Tuesday 21st January for your son/daughter. The workshop will consist of a two-hour session in the Main Hall, where students will be introduced to study techniques and revision skills, to help prepare them for their upcoming Year 8 examinations which will take place from 3rd February 2020. As you’re aware, studying independently can be difficult; so hopefully this morning will give students some confidence when approaching revision. The morning will consist of: 1. How to best use class made notes & resources from teachers. 2. How to plan a good revision timetable 3. X2 RVHS ‘tried and tested’ revision techniques 4. Fun memory games to improve working memory 5. A follow up House competition Your son/daughter will also be bringing home a ‘Takeaway’ card - which will include some of their actions for a successful revision period during the run up to their exams. All of the revision materials shared with students on the day, will also be made available on the school website, on the ‘Revision Resources’ page. If you have any questions regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Larkin at plarkin@rodingvalley.net or myself at cdobson@rodingvalley.net Mr Dobson- Year 8 Progress Leader 8U have been discussing their new year's resolutions this week. The most common resolutions included: 1. Trying to focus more in lessons 2. Trying different revision techniques for my exams 3. Being more active 4. Always having a smile on my face. The pupils were given a few minutes to come up with a list of the ten most common New Year’s resolutions; most students got five or more correct answers with Vinay Wardhan and Laura Cratchley getting the most correct guesses. Great start to the New Year! Mr Ibrahim- 8U Form Tutor

Message for Year 10 Welcome back! It’s lovely to see so many students well rested and ready to learn. Please can all Year 10 Parents/Carers be aware that your child’s School Report have been emailed to all this week. If you are concerned about your child’s report, please contact their class teacher. Mr Ryan – Year Progress Leader for Year 10

Message for Year 11 Parents Happy New Year to you all and I hope you had a great Christmas Break. We are reaching a very crucial time for Year 11 with GCSE examinations beginning in May. I would like to remind you of our Parents Evening which takes place next Thursday 16th January. This is a prime opportunity for you to discuss your son/daughter's progress within the specific subject areas. Students should also be thinking about the next steps of their journey whether it be Sixth Form, College or an apprenticeship. A reminder that Careers Fest is taking place at New City College on Thursday 30th January. There are currently lots of interventions and clinics available to students in all subject areas which we encourage them to attend in order to reach the best possible outcome at the end of the year.
