The Year 11’s have been superb during their ongoing PPEs (Pre Public Exams) and I would like to thank parents for their ongoing support at home. The Year 13 PPEs and Year 9 exams begin on Monday 2nd December. Students should now be revising and preparing for these exams. I would like to invite you to the 6th Form Open Evening on Thursday 5th December; this is from 5pm to 7pm. If you have a child in Year 11 it is really important that you attend, this will give you an insight into the Post 16 curriculum and the A level choices that are on offer here at Roding Valley High School. As a school we offer a very wide breadth of A Level choices with some opportunity for vocational courses. We are also part of the Epping Forest Consortium and this allows students to study one of their A Levels at Debden Park High School, which has proved to be very successful for some students. Anjuli Wheaton, Director of Sixth Form will be talking to parents at 6pm. Please open this link for our latest Extra-curricular Activities and Enrichment timetable. The school marked Remembrance Day with the whole school listening to the Last Post followed by a two minute silence out on the playground. It was truly wonderful to have our community of 1500+ people coming together to show such respect, in a moving and inspiring way.

I would like to inform parents that Mr Cheema, my Deputy Headteacher is unfortunately currently off on compassionate leave, Miss Dyer has been appointed the Acting Deputy Headteacher in his absence and will assume all of his responsibilities. As the nights continue to draw in and can you remind your children to be mindful of walking home in the dark, using appropriate road crossing and keeping to well-lit areas. I also ask for your continued support in ensuring that students go straight home and are not hanging around the station and High Street areas after 3:30pm. There have been some incidents of anti-social behaviour and I don’t want our students involved for their own safety and well-being. The school has experienced lots of successes in the last few weeks, sporting, debating and in the performing arts. Please read and enjoy the details in the bulletin. Can I recommend that you follow the school on twitter and Instagram for daily updates of the wonderful activities our students are involved in. Kind regards Sharon Jenner Headteacher

Year 9 and 10 Trip to Tilbury Docks In the last week of the last half term our students had an enjoyable time visiting the Tilbury docks where they were inspired to look into Chemistry-based career paths.
Student Poppy Tribe wrote: “At the Tilbury how-chemistry-works fair, we watched a series of Chemistry-based presentations, the majority of which were on chemical engineering. This inspired us to think about taking Chemistry at A level and look at careers to do with chemistry”.
Year 7 Reading with the Residents of Poets Place In a reading initiative designed to support our Year 7 students with their reading development and build important inter-generational relationships. Our Year 7 students and the elderly residents of Poets Place came together as part of the school’s new reading initiative, Reading with Residents this week.
Our Reading with Residents programme runs once a week for a six-week period; in each session a Year 7 student partners with their resident buddy to spend 20 minutes actively reading out loud and 20 minutes working together on word exercises and games.

Year 9 PRISONMENOWAY! We were grateful to welcome ‘Prison Me No Way’ this week which educates young people about the causes, impact and consequences of crime. Students also learn how to stay safe, deal with life challenges and lead law abiding and positive lifestyles. Young people face far greater challenges than previous generations and we want to help them stay safe, be able to meet those challenges and not get involved in crime. We also hope to inspire some young people involved to join some of the professionals working with them today and consider it as a possible career path.
I was overwhelmed by how much the students gained from taking part in the day. The staff that ran the sessions were brilliant at engaging the students and are so passionate about helping students make the right choices in life. I am sure it will be a day that stays with the students for a long time.
# All of our students found the sessions invaluable and would thoroughly recommend this experience. “The talk with Anna stood out because we got to talk to someone who has been though the prison experience. It helped me to improve my confidence in making the right choices”. “I learnt not to follow the wrong crowd and to listen to my role models”. “I found the workshop with the prisoner interesting. The prisoners account of what it’s really like in prison has really made me think it is a place I never want to go”. “I found the mock prison cell terrifying. I was amazed how small it was”. Thank you also to Mrs Cain for organising this event. Written by Miss Williams – Year 9 Progress Leader Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @humsrvhs @rodingvalleyPE RODING VALLEY DRAMA@rodingdrama
Chelmsford Shakespeare Festival 2019 Last week, our Drama students visited The Boswells School for the annual ‘Chelmsford Shakespeare Festival’, joining students from four other schools to perform extracts from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, the funny bits. Our students featured throughout the evening; popping up in and amongst the audience whilst rehearsing their play (within a play) in the woods. It was a fantastic showcase of our student’s skills and love of Drama. Well done to everyone who to part!

Latest House Points Total
This week, our House Leadership teams (across Years 7-13) have led House assemblies. Last academic year, students fed back that they would like to support a charity and raise funds throughout the academic year in order to give back to the wider community. The House Captains, Deputies and Leaders have worked together to identify and select a charity that each House will support this year. A separate letter from the Deputy Head Girl who oversees the House System, Imogen Kemp will be distributed next week. On 8th November, Year 7 had the pleasure of taking part in an Escape Room/Crystal Maze style house competition during the lunch break. The event was organised by Ms. Hodges and Miss Woods and students thoroughly enjoyed the range of activities on offer. The winning House will be communicated in the next House update once all the scores are totalled. A massive thank you to the House Captains and Deputies for supporting during this event.

Message from Mr Ryan Welcome back after half term. It's hard to believe that we are two weeks in already. Can I please point out that for the next two weeks Year 10 students will be sitting assessments in all subjects. Revision materials can be found on SMHW, Doddle and Seneca. These assessments will help us to identify and establish which students require interventions and specifically which ones. Before we broke up for half term, I was lucky enough to be able to accompany a group of 20 students to the WOW (World of Work) Conference. Here the participants learnt about employment skills, what employers are looking for in an employee and (quite importantly) what jobs are out there. At the end of the workshop the students were awarded certificates by the Mayor of Loughton. I was also able to hand out certificates for Sports awards before the break. It is lovely to reward participation in more than one sport.

At RVHS, we communicate by in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.
MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website. Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left.
But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab. The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up. Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @humsrvhs @rodingvalleyPE RODING VALLEY DRAMA@rodingdrama
At RVHS, we use Show My Homework; an account has been created for you to keep up to date with your child’s homework progress from home.
What is ‘Show My Homework’? Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due. How to Log In? Go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/pin Or you can download the app. Enter your PIN details that you have been given in the letter provided by your school.
What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. After logging in for the first time users will be asked to provide more memorable login details for future use. PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget these logins.
Click ‘Log in’ Create a memorable password and enter your email address then click ‘Update you details’.
Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.
You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child. If yourself or your child experience any difficulties with using ‘Show my Homework’ or you no longer have your pin, please contact Miss Larkin: plarkin@rodingvalley.net
