“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Friday 18th October 2019 Message from the Headteacher I was delighted to attend the Sports Awards Evening, which was held last week. It was great to see so many of our students celebrating their participation in sport here at Roding Valley High School. There were awards for team participation, individual participation and achievements at both school and county level. The cups went to:

The Moncur Award: Caleb Beer

Outstanding Achievement to PE: Madison Holden Ettridge

Please open this link if you would like to view the presentation from the event. To keep up to date with all sports news, please do follow the PE department on Twitter @RodingValleyPE Our KS3 Awards Evening that was scheduled for next Thursday will now take place after half term, so that we can recognise the progress and attainment of students from last year’s Year 7, 8 & 9. For Year 11 parents please do note that their Pre Public Exams (PPEs) start after half term, the full timetable is now available on our website. They should be using their half term to revise - subject areas would have shared revision resources and expectations with students but for additional support you can refer to the ‘How to Help Your Child’ section on our website At Roding Valley High School, we encourage all of our students to find the best revision technique for them. We stand by four main techniques: Buzan mind mapping, Cornell Note Taking, Cue Cards and the use of Seneca (an online app). Our students are encouraged to use these techniques before internal assessments, so that they are equipped with the tools to be successful at GCSE, A-level and beyond. Please click this link to see our revision techniques explained: I would also like to launch our Academic Reading Lists which can be found on our new website. These include specific reading and activities which can further support your child’s success in the subjects that they study.

Medical Expo Trip On Wednesday 16 October, students interested in pursuing a medical career visited the NHS Medical Expo 2019 at Harlow College. At the event, students explored a range of stands, activities and hands-on workshops; designed to inspire the next generation and help raise awareness of the opportunities available to students.

Exhibitors included the East of England Ambulance Service, NHS Research and Development and Clinical Coding – a brilliant day of learning for everyone involved!

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Good luck to our explorers setting off on the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition today! 25 Year 9 students will be heading out to Roding’s, Chelmsford, for a weekend of walking and exploring; including 6 hours of walking per day over a 32km trail. Year 10 Football Team Win National Cup Match on Penalties Our Year 10’s travelled to Ravensborne School in Bromley on Wednesday for their 2nd round National Cup fixture off the back off two successive wins in the Essex Cup. After some early chances and a disallowed goal for offside, both teams cancelled themselves out for the rest of the game with Roding having a lot of possession especially in the second half. A scoreless 60 minutes saw the game go into extra time with again both teams failing to create any chances there was only going to be one way to decide the game; penalties. The penalty shootout ensued with two brilliant saves by Isher and with Roding missing two penalties, the shootout went into sudden death. The 6th penalty takers for both schools scored in the first round of sudden death but with Isher saving their 7th penalty, George stepped up to confidently score the winner and Roding winning 5-4 to enter the 3rd round.

Under 14’s Rugby Congratulations to our U14’s Rugby team for their superb win against West Hatch High School, scoring 12-5. Well done to William Harvey and Harry Hopkins for helping secure the win. Keep up the great work!

Year 7 Cross Country Well done to our Year 7 Cross Country Runners for their success this week and have qualified for the Harlow and West Essex Team. Fantastic achievement!

We are near the end of the first half term and what a pleasure it has been; to see our Year 7’s grow in confidence and develop over these seven weeks. Year 7 have really thrown themselves in to ‘the way of life’ at RVHS and have been taking full advantage of everything the school has to offer them. I hope they enjoy a well-deserved rest over the half term break and come back refreshed and ready to push on when they return. Thank you to all parents and guardians who have worked together with the school to ensure that the transition process has ran and will continue to run so effectively. This has allowed our students and your children to adapt and settle in to life at secondary school so well.

7A/RS2 Ruby attended the district cross country on Thursday and had a great run where she finished 4th out of a large field and has therefore been selected to represent Harlow and West Essex at the county championships.

Mrs Cain is extremely proud of this group and how hard they have been working. They all work hard and have a lovely attitude to learning which allows for a wonderful, friendly working environment.

On the same day Ruby came back to school just before lunch and then represented the school football team and scored two goals in a 7-5 win!

It is a very happy classroom!

Concerns Evening If your child’s ATL were below expectations then you may have been invited in for a meeting during our concerns evening on Tuesday 22nd October. This meeting will be with either Mr. Price or a member of our Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to discuss what can be done moving forward to improve Attitude to Learning.

Ruby Mace Not only this Ruby has settled in to life at RVHS really well and when she isn’t playing for a sports team she is there supporting, showing all the qualities of a real leader in the year group. Well done Ruby!

Students Reports for Attitude to Learning (ATL) You will have been sent your child’s ATL reports for all subjects. I am glad to see that so many of our students have had such positive ATL scores across all subjects and it is great to see. ATL works like this; 1 = outstanding effort 2= good effort 3= requires improvement 4= concern

Message from Mr Dobson Another excellent few weeks for our Year 8 students. On Thursday, there was an outstanding assembly from Mr Naidoo and Mr Vermaak who spoke about their experiences growing up in South Africa. The Year 8s were captivated by the assembly which was inspiring and thought provoking. I would like to remind students that the clocks 'fall' back next Sunday 27th October and with the shorter days, many students will be travelling to and from school in the dark. I want to remind students of the importance of staying safe on their way to and from school. If I could provide one piece of advice and something I spoke about at our recent Transition Evening is that they attend school regularly and maintain a pattern of good attendance throughout their school career. Excellent attendance at school is important to allow a child or young person to fulfil their potential. Some of the key reasons why it is so important that children attend school:

         

To learn. To have fun. To make new friends. To experience new things in life. To develop awareness of other cultures, religion, ethnicity and gender differences. To achieve. To gain qualifications. To develop new skills. To build confidence and self-esteem. To have the best possible start in life.

How Families Can Help:  Establish a good routine in the mornings and evenings so your child is prepared for the school day ahead.  Make sure your child goes to school regularly and follows the school rules.  Ensure your child arrives at school on time – not late.  Arrange dental and medical appointments outside school hours when possible.  Always inform the school if your child is absent due to illness – this should be followed up with a written note when your child returns to school.  Take family holidays outside term time.  Praise and reward your child’s achievements at school.  Discuss any problems or difficulties with the school – staff are there to help and will be supportive.

Remember: “Absences add up! Missing just two days a month means a child misses 10% of the school year.” I wish you all a safe half term break and see you in November and remember November 21st is Year 8 Parents Evening.

Aciman

King

I enjoy this book because it is the perfect guide for those who are seeking a way to live a more beautiful and meaningful life. It makes you become the best version you can be.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It was good because it taught me the importance of being empathetic and understanding.

Quote from the book: 'You deserve better than the behaviours limiting your progress' Lorin Atkas

'Alex Rider' by Anthony Horowitz This book is my favourite book because you can make choices throughout each page which makes it suspenseful. It makes the reader want to continue and find out more. If you like adventure and thrillers, then this book is for you! Coby Mizzi

Message from Mr Ryan We are coming close to the end of what is the longest half term in the academic year. Year 10 have shown themselves to be mature and focussed in lessons. As the nights are beginning to get longer and the weather is set to get worse I would ask that all students take care of their health. We are entering the flu season and attendance to school is vital for success. Therefore Year 10 students need to wrap up warm and eat well. I am sure everyone is looking forward to half term and I would like to point out that both Halloween and bonfire night are during the break I would like everyone to keep safe and only go to supervised events.

At RVHS, we communicate by in a bid to get information to you quicker and more cost effectively. We found, however, our previous parental communication system did not give the functionality that people expect from smart phone apps today. So the school has invested in a new communication system call RS Connect Ed and with this comes a shiny new App.

MyEd is the free parent app that gives you a multitude of communication and information features to stay in touch with what is going on at school. The app gives you direct access to your child's attendance, timetable, absence records, achievements, behaviour and much, much more. You will also see that we update and change the information in the app as the school year moves along. Click here to see a short video about the app We are able to send you messages directly to the MyEd app relating to important information about your child's education and to remind you of events that are taking place at school. We can also embed links to regularly used systems, for example ParentPay & Doddle so you can keep everything in one place. You will receive a notification if we send you a message and there is no charge for the messages you send to us. The App can be downloaded by anyone and they will have access to information also available on our website. Only parents will be able to access their own student’s information as long as we have the email address and mobile number you are using to access the App. Everyone will be able to see image to the left.

But only parents of students in the school will be able to access this when clicking on the My Students tab. The MyEd app is available for both Apple iOS and Android devices and can be found using the links below: Step 1 - Go to your App Store Step 2 - Search for My Ed Step 3 - Download the Free app Apple iOS App Google Android App Once you have installed and opened MyEd, search for Roding Valley High School and follow the simple instructions to identify yourself. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you are having any problems and we will help you get set up. Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @humsrvhs @rodingvalleyPE RODING VALLEY DRAMA@rodingdrama

At RVHS, we use Show My Homework; an account has been created for you to keep up to date with your child’s homework progress from home.

What is ‘Show My Homework’? Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due. How to Log In?  Go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/pin  Or you can download the app.  Enter your PIN details that you have been given in the letter provided by your school.

What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. After logging in for the first time users will be asked to provide more memorable login details for future use. PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget these logins.

 Click ‘Log in’  Create a memorable password and enter your email address then click ‘Update you details’.

Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.

You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child. If yourself or your child experience any difficulties with using ‘Show my Homework’ or you no longer have your pin, please contact Miss Larkin: plarkin@rodingvalley.net
