Message from the Headteacher As we approach the upcoming half term break, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our students for their continued hard work and all parents/carers for your continued support. This week we held our Year 13 Parents Evening, thank you to all of the parents for attending and as this was the final opportunity to discuss our son/daughters progress before their public exams starting in May. I hope you were able to gain some useful strategies for supporting them in the lead up to these exams.

On Wednesday we held our annual Harry Potter Night, it was a fantastic event. Please take the opportunity to read our article further on in this bulletin and thank you to all of the staff that organized this amazing event. Next week our Year 11 French and Spanish Speaking exams begin and there is also a GCSE English language Mock exam. Students have received details of the start times for these exams, so can we ask parents/carers to remind them to arrive promptly and prepared for these exams.

I would like to remind Year 9 Parents/carers that on Thursday 13th February, we will be holding our Year 9 Options Evening. This is an important evening to gain vital information about our Options Process and to hear how you can support your child in making their course choices for GCSE and to meet with Subject Leaders. This week our students have been learning about Healthy Lifestyles as part of our Character and Culture, one of the topics that have been discussed is the dangers of Vaping. This has become a trend with your people across the country in recent months and we would like to ensure that our students are aware of the dangers and that Roding Valley High School has a zero tolerance for Vape Pens and Vaping. A letter will be sent out to all parents next week with some information relating to the assemblies we have delivered in school regarding the use of Vape Pens and the contents of Vape Pens

We have some fantastic trips going out over the half term break with Year 10 and 11 students visiting Barcelona, Year 7 and 8 Students are going to Disneyland Paris, Year 8 and 9 students will be going skiing in Italy and finally a group of Year 10 and 11 students visiting Paris. I trust that they will all have an enjoyable time and would like to thank our staff for organising these opportunities.

We are still finding that students are bringing Nut based products into school; please can I remind parents that Roding Valley High School is a nut free school and that your children should not bring nut based products into school. We have several children with severe allergies and for their safety it is vital that we all respect this. Can we ask parents collecting their children from school to turn off your engines while you are waiting for them to come out; we have had a number of complaints from the local residents as this is both bad for the environment and for everyone’s health. I am really proud of how hard our students have worked this half term and would like to remind you that school closes on Friday 14th February at normal time and will return on Monday 24th February at 8:35am. Please enjoy the rest of the bulletin and have a lovely half term break. Sharon Jenner - Headteacher

Over 1000 students and their families attended our annual Careers Fest last Thursday. It was our 11th Careers Fest and probably the most successful yet! The event is a fantastic opportunity for our students to view the different career and educational opportunities that are available to them Post 16 and Post 18. The event was attended by over 75 exhibitors including local and national employers from private and public sector organisations, as well as Institutes, Universities and Colleges. Throughout the event the exhibitors provided information and advice to students at all levels. Students were given advice about apprenticeships and in some instances supported to apply for current vacancies. It also really helps them to develop their networking and communication skills. This year Hill very generously sponsored the Careers Fest and also gave students the opportunity to apply for a work experience prize at their head office. Many of our students are now employed by Hill currently completing a sponsored degree programme. Congratulations to one of our Year 11 students, who won the Institute of Carpenters Roofing Competition and he will be in receipt of a cheque for ÂŁ25.00 soon! What was so nice to see this year was how many of our students are now employed by these companies and they are now manning the stands and sharing their experiences with students from their own school. KPMG, RIBA, Ashurst LLP, Hill and Epping Forest District Council exhibitors were all supported by students from Roding Valley now employed in apprenticeships and sponsored degree programmes with these employers. A huge thank you to Mrs Mason, who arranged this event along with the six Epping Forest District Secondary School Careers Advisors and to all of the parents and students that came along on Thursday. I hope you will agree it was a fantastic event. We had such big named companies attending this year and they will only continue to do this if we have high numbers of students and parents attending. Our Careers Fest 2021 will be on Thursday 28th January 2021 Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @humsrvhs @rodingvalleyPE RODING VALLEY DRAMA@rodingdrama

Roding Valley was once again transfigured into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry on Thursday. Many Year 7’s shook off their muggle disguises and embraced their magical sides, with the help of our Year 9 Prefects and wise Professors. Releasing fire demons in Defence against the Dark Arts and brewing wicked concoctions in Potions, the night was full of cackling laughs and some sneaky snacks. Tony, Taliah and Sienna won the fancydress competition, whilst Beth and Enru won the Sorting Hat crafts. After apparating into various Hogwarts locations with our green screen magic, I think that everyone had fantastic night! Miss Bleakley - English Teacher

Year 12 University Admissions Conference On Tuesday 4th February, Mrs Collins had the pleasure of chaperoning some of our year 12 students to a Competitive University Admissions Workshop day at Bancroft’s School. The lectures were very informative and the group left feeling enthused and motivated about their future in higher education! Read our students’ overview of the day: Charlotte Booth, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Imperial College London, who is currently researching adolescent mental health and cognition, talked to us about her passion for research about developing a better understanding of mental health and improving real-world outcomes; especially in terms of an adolescent mind. She spoke about a particular study she is working on about cognition, adolescents and the effect of mobile phones called SCAMP. She also told us about her journey, including her research at Imperial College and explained how it is a prestigious place with exceptional facilities, as it is a specialised university. She also discussed her work and how mental health is so important especially in your teenage years; many of her statistics showed that it is a crucial time in terms of developing a mental health problem. She displayed complex ideas and research in easy to understand diagrams, and asked questions to engage with, but also provide, us with a better understanding of the type of hard work and commitment expected of any Imperial College student and/or researcher. Written by Hannah Green 12R

The second session that we visited was run by an ex-student from St Andrews University. He spoke to us about the quirky traditions held at the University, for example being ‘adopted’ by third years and participating in the ‘May Dip’ in the sea. This was interesting as it gave the University character and made it stand out. He also spoke about the flexible degree structure, where students are able to pick up different subjects and drop them, or specialise in their final two years. He also told us about the ‘do’s and don’ts’ of writing a personal statement, for example, showing engagement, motivation, and commitment to the chosen subject. Overall, I enjoyed this session the most and felt that it was very informative. Written by Florence New 12R

After the Bancroft’s School trip, it was clear to me that the University of Oxford has an extremely prestigious reputation both nationally and internationally. Hearing from a member of staff from the University, who is directly involved with the student selection process, I now know that to study at the institution requires lots of dedication and preparation beforehand. Arguably, other than exceptional grades, passion is the most important attribute a student must have in order to succeed at this top university. Within your UCAS application, you must be able to demonstrate how you have actively gone further in your chosen subject to show this passion (listening to podcasts, reading Scientific journals, taking part in competitions). This aspect of having true love and passion for your chosen subject area applies to all the top tier universities (Russell Group) and you must feel comfortable discussing current affairs which you find interesting. As well as this, Oxford and Cambridge usually throw unprepared questions into their interviews so that they know you are able to make links and think outside of the box when in a situation that you have may have not come across before. Overall, I found the workshop to be particularly informative about the application process when it comes to the top universities. Hearing from a member of staff, specifically about what they are looking for in a successful application, this has helped me to focus more on developing ways in which I can demonstrate my passions. Activities

Message from Miss Edwards I would like to start by congratulating the Year 7's on their approach and conduct in the recent assessments. The students prepared for these assessments well by using their new revision techniques and this really showed in how well the students were completing each of their papers. Students will be going through these papers in lessons in the coming week and 'closing the gap' in any areas where they may have struggled. On Wednesday, we had four students compete in the Essex Schools Cross Country competition. The students competed with students from schools across the whole county and represented RVHS with such pride. Well done to Daisy Callagher (27th), Ruby Mace (33rd), Billy Muggleton (68th) and Michael Luxton (78th) on their excellent performances. On Thursday 5th March we have our first Year 7 parents evening. This is your chance to meet all of your child's teachers and discuss their progress and talk over any concerns you may have. Your child will receive an appointment sheet and will be responsible for making appointments with each of their teachers. Well done to Melody Anderson-Skeats, Bobbi Swaby, Lily Brinkley, Louisa Nicholson, Jake Katyal & Bethany Cooper for all receiving House points for their entry into the Buzan Mind Map House competition. Jake was the overall winner receiving 50 points for his House. Well done Jake! I would like to take this opportunity to remind you about the schools’ Mobile Phone Policy. The use of mobile phones is not permitted at any point during the school day. Phones should be switched off and kept in school bags until they are out of the buildings at the end of the day. If a phone is seen by any member of staff, they will be confiscated until the end of the day. If this happens more than once, parents will need to collect it from the school office. I would like to thank you for your continued support and wish everyone a happy and safe half term. I look forward to welcoming all our students back on Monday 24th February for another jam packed half term.

Message from Mr Dobson This week Year 8s have had their examinations and I am proud to say that their conduct and attitude has been first class. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress made by all students and will be reporting back to you in the near future. This week Character and Culture has looked at Healthy Lifestyles and Mrs Dyer did an excellent assembly on Vapes and their use by all members of society. Our Period One lessons have focused on how to have a healthy lifestyle by reducing sugar and monitoring your calorie intake. Well done to all the tutors for delivering this excellent lesson to our Year group. Another great thing about being a teacher is that I get to work with wonderful students and great teachers. Year 8, like all Year groups, are a mix of so many personalities, all here to learn. Schools are places of learning and also miniature societies. The climate of our school has a direct impact on both how well students learn and how well they interact with each other. Teachers work hard to make their classrooms welcoming places where all students feel included.

Message from Mr Ryan This week at RVHS we have been delivering sessions on healthy Lifestyles. I think now is the perfect opportunity to remind you that teenagers need to rest as much as work. I am impressed that some of the Year group now have part time jobs as well as taking part in extracurricular activities. However, this cannot affect their studies in lessons research has shown that the average teenager requires 9.5 hours sleep to function fully as well as a healthy diet.

Did You Know? Remembering information is the first step for students in mastering higher level skills. For students to be able to explain, analyse, evaluate and create, they need to have a firm knowledge of the information and terms involved first. Ebbinghaus’ Forgetting Curve aims to show us how information can be lost from our memories over time when we don’t strive to retain it. This forgetting curve suggests that we will halve our memory of new information in just days, unless we revisit learning to gradually move it into our long-term memory.

What Can Parents Do? As early as possible, encourage your child to make notes of the key information for topics they are studying. They may highlight these in a book/on a sheet, write them down onto flash cards, create a mindmap or record them in any other way that they wish. Colour-coding these can be a helpful tool in aiding revisiting as students can identify in green what they are confident with, orange what they are unsure they would remember long term, and code in red that information they didn’t know until they wrote it down or don’t fully understand and may need to explore further. Encourage revisiting of topics frequently, using a homelearning schedule. Discuss with your child the need to revisit learning as they progress through units move onto next ones and come to the end of a term or year. Revision shouldn’t be revising all the knowledge from the entire year; we should aim to revisit learning frequently to embed it into our long-term memories and then revise the higher skills using this knowledge as we go further into the course. Encourage your child to find ways to address ‘red’ areas and weaknesses. This doesn’t necessarily need to be seeking a teacher’s help, it might be reading about it in a textbook, online or practising a particular skill.

Through Their Eyes Poetry Competition (11 – 18 Year Olds) For all the budding poets in Roding Valley High School, this competition is your opportunity to express your poetic skills! Whether you’re an experienced writer, or just want to give it a go, this competition will be a fun way to engage in topical issues all around the world and share different points of view!

What do you need to do? Write a poem (only one side of A4 paper long) through a different perspective. It’s as simple as that! Once you have completed it, please give it to Miss Woods in E12 or the English Office.

Tips and Ideas: Tip 1: Using headlines is a great way to see the world from a student’s perspective. Through Their Eyes also gives students the opportunity to write with empathy as they look at a situation from another point of view. Tip 2: Remember you can write from lots of different perspectives; an animal, an inanimate object or a person from a different culture than your own! Tip 3: Why not try experimenting with different poetic forms and techniques? Acrostic, rhyme, riddle, sonnet... so many ways to express your ideas!

Possible topical ideas to help you get started: 

Australian Bushfires

The EU voted to ban all single use plastics

Harry & Meghan stepping down from royal duties

Coronavirus outbreak

Astronaut Christina Koch returning to Earth from the Space Station

Veganuary
