RVHS Parent Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Week ending: Friday 17th May 2019 Message from the Head of School

It has been great to see the sun this week; hopefully summer is finally here ! Today, we said goodbye to our Year 13 students. We wish them well as they reach the end of their seven year journey with us. They all enjoyed the barbeque we laid on for them in the science garden; thank you to our in house chefs, Mr Naidoo and Mr Vermaak for their expert culinary skills. I would like to take the opportunity, on behalf of the entire school community to wish them well in their A levels. We will look forward to seeing them on the other side at the Prom. It is a very exciting time in their young lives as they now look forward to university or starting higher level apprenticeships. We are very fortunate to have been part of their formative years and so proud that they have all become such mature, respectful and aspirational young adults. Good Luck! The GCSE exams have gone really well this week, the Year group remains highly focused and the attendance to our additional revision classes has been exceptional. Keep up the good work Year 11! I must reiterate that there is a full programme of classes and support on offer at this crucial time, all details have been emailed separately. The Maths team is in this Saturday for extra revision sessions. This week our Year 9 students visited Danbury for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Assessment Expedition, they have had a great time and thankfully for the majority of their trip the weather has been good. If you are a parent of a Year 8 student, who is interested in participating in future expeditions, then please note that there is a meeting in the school canteen on the 22nd May at 6pm. A separate letter has been emailed to parents.

Thank you for your ongoing support with school uniform and ensuring that your children promptly leave the school vicinity at the end of the school day. There has been a marked decrease in incidents reported around the station area and our students are regularly commended by the community for their smartness of appearance and their good conduct. Can I remind parents that the school closes at normal time on Friday 24 May for the half term break. Please enjoy the rest of the bulletin, an opportunity to share in the school week. th

Best wishes Sharon Jenner

Our Year 7 students have had a series of ‘Character and Culture’ lessons on Politics and Government. They were given excerpts from three main political party manifestos, under a disguised party name and from these, our Year 7 students had to make a choice about which party they most agreed with and then came to the polling station on Thursday to cast their votes. We can now announce the following:

The Fedora Hat Party - 123

votes

The Bowler Hat Party - 58 votes The Cloche Hat Party - 53 votes Well done to our year 7 students for making a 'political decision' and for treating it so seriously. Thank you very much to the Sixth Form Politics students who ably supported and completed the count and to the staff who supported in numerous ways as ever! (For more photos, please visit on twitter @humsrvhs) Written by Mrs Preston

Well done to the combined our Year 7 and 8 World Marathon team for coming 2nd place in the WESSA World Marathon Event at Lee Valley Athletics Centre with a time of 2 hours and 7 minutes (211 laps) last Friday.

This week our students had fun completing their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Assessment Expedition, They started on Wednesday, with the arduous task of planning their route and then on Thursday travelled to Danbury, to complete their assessment. To pass their assessment, our students had to walk for six hours a day, so on average over the two-day period our students will have walked between 15 to twenty miles. Well done to all of the students who took part!

Year 8 Parent Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme Parents Information Evening We would like to invite our Year 8 parents to our DoE Information Evening on Wednesday 22nd May 2019 at 6.00pm in the Canteen. Message from Mr Dobson As my father has always told me, ‘attitude is everything’ and this week the attitude of the Year 7’s in dealing with their examinations has been exemplary. Their behaviour has been excellent and we hope the results will reflect their excellent attitude. It was great to see all Year 7 voting and please enjoy the article written by Mrs Preston about the event earlier in this bulletin. Can I remind Parents/Carers about the need for correct school shoes and the correct equipment - if for some reason students are unable to wear the correct shoes then please provide a note or call the school reception.

The Residential Information Evening times have changed. To reduce the burden on Parents/Carers we have decided to put it on the same night as the KS3 Challenge and Enrichment Project Showcase, therefore the combined Year 7 and Year 8 Residential Information Evening will now start promptly at 6:30pm on Thursday 20th June in the Sports Hall after the KS3 Challenge and Enrichment Project Showcase. Let’s all have an enjoyable last week of half term at school, stay safe online and outside in the wider community.

Mental Health Awareness Week: May 13th to 19th June 2019. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Emma Stone. Prince Harry. Ruby Wax. Ryan Reynolds. These are just a few of the celebrities who have spoken up about their struggles with mental health in the last two years in an attempt to fight the stigma that is still associated with mental illness. “Took me a long time to realise it, but the key is to not be afraid to open up,” said Johnson in April last year. It is Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK. According to the charity Mind, one in four people in the UK experience mental health problems every year. Many say that the social stigma attached to these problems can make recovery even harder. In 2017, the young royals launched the Heads Together campaign to encourage people to talk about their difficulties. You do not have to have been diagnosed with a mental health problem for this to make a difference. Talking about your feelings is one of the best ways to keep yourself mentally healthy, along with exercising, eating well, and asking for help if you need it. If you are struggling with feelings of sadness, anxiety, panic, stress or loneliness, do not be afraid of talking to a doctor — especially if it is beginning to affect your daily life. Message from Miss Williams Year 8 students have been focusing this week on achieving their PiXL Apprentice Qualification, in a range of activities both in and out of their normal school day. With each activity going towards one of the key attributes on their personal record. When each attribute has two activities towards it, and the student has ten activities in total, they will receive the Level 1 qualification called 'Apprentice'. Congratulations to the following students for completing the ‘Apprentice Award’:

Joseph James

Carys Gooding

Flavius Timis

These students are now ready to move on to their graduate award and become our PiXL ambassadors. Please support your child completing these activities at home. This qualification will be invaluable when competing for opportunities in the future. I want to thank all of our year 8's for their hard work revising for their assessments next week and wish them good luck. Could I remind everyone to use Google classroom for Humanities revision resources. Please use this code for RE: x81zuab If you have any questions regarding assessments, please speak to your teachers.

Message from Mr Ryan It has been a lovely week in Year 9, with students receiving their option choice letters. Could I ask that if you haven't seen what course your child has been placed on, that you contact me and I will be able to let you know. If there any changes your child would like made, please ask them to speak to either myself or Mr Mammen as now is the perfect time to make any changes before the new timetables come out after half term. Due to the popularity of the 40/40 lectures we have decided to continue these, our lecture on Thursday was delivered by Mr Liddle on 'Financial globalisation' It was highly informative, especially the information about the 'Central African Republic'. It is lovely to see so many students in year 9 participating in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. I look forward to finding out how well they do. As we are entering the warmer season I do need to point out that students do need to still wear the correct uniform. If there are any alterations to this we will let you know. Also, we would recommend that your child has a bottle of water with them and has taken any hayfever medication before they leave for school.

Year 10 Study Skills This week, our Year 10 students spent time learning the revision strategy ‘Give Me Five’. ‘Give me 5’ is an excellent revision strategy used for recall of specific details per subject - the idea is that students are given a list of topic areas that they would need to know for their exam- they then have to recall 5 facts from memory on this topic- if they can't do 5 they must go back to their notes! It's a great way for students to identify their weaknesses and practise for their exam!

Dear Parents/Carers, I have been going through all of the Year 10 'Take your child to work day' forms and seen how many fantastic opportunities the students are participating in whilst work shadowing parents. If you work for a company that would like to engage with the school please put me in touch with their talent acquisition team. I am always looking for apprenticeship, work experience placements and employment opportunities for the students of Roding Valley. In the summer term I will be running two events: 

The annual Mock Interview Day on Wednesday 3rd July for Year 10. If you work in HR and have experience of conducting interviews and would like to spend the day interviewing students then please let me know. It is a really rewarding day and many parents have joined us over the years.

The annual Business Breakfast for Year 12 is on Tuesday 18th June. This event is run in the speed dating format and gives our students the opportunity to speak to employers, develop their networking and communication skills as well as securing work experience and future apprenticeship opportunities. If your company would like to join in please let me know and I will send them an invitation.

If you are interested in taking part please contact me on damson@rodingvalley.com Kind regards Donna Mason Careers Development Manager Follow us on: @rodingvalleyHS @humsrvhs @rodingvalleyPE RODING VALLEY DRAMA@rodingdrama

Year 13 Final Day Today we say farewell to our fabulous Year 13 students as they leave for study leave and their exams start next week. We had a truly British BBQ to celebrate as a group. It has been great to get to know this year group this year and I’m so proud of all the achievements they have made and will make over the coming months. They are a fantastic group of young people who have worked so hard over the last few months.

We look forward to sharing Senior Prom with them in 26th June and celebrating their successes on results day! Well done year 13, you will all be missed!

Student Absence If your child is unable to attend School for any reason, please report their absence by phoning the school number by 9.30am at the latest, you must also ring in each day of your child’s absence. 0208-508-1173 On their return to School, please ensure your child brings with them a letter . or medical evidence if requested explaining the reason for the absence for our records.

Medical Appointments Please make sure you make any medical or dental appointments outside of school time. If this is not possible then please try to ensure that your child attends before and/or after their appointment.

Holidays in Term Time It is not school policy to authorise any holidays during term time except in exceptional circumstances. A ‘Leave of Absence’ form must be completed (these are available at Student Reception) should you require leave for your child, a letter detailing your exceptional circumstances should accompany it. Please be aware if the absence is not authorised and the holiday is taken, the case may be referred to the Education Welfare Service who may issue a Penalty Notice for £120 (or £60 if paid within 21 days) to each parent for each child taken out of school. For full details regarding attendance, please see our Attendance Policy, which can be found on our website or contact Mrs. Jeanette Low, our Attendance and Welfare Manager on the school number.

Guidance for Common Ailments Please see on the following page guidance from the NHS of common childhood illnesses; this advises what type of illness requires time off from school and what does not. Should you require further guidance please contact the school on 0208-508-1173
