Book of the Week: Coram Boy Coram Boy is the story of Toby, saved from an African ship as a child, and Aaron, the illegitimate son of the heir to a great estate. Their lives are linked by the Coram Man, a shady figure who collects abandoned and unwanted children, supposedly to deliver them to a safe new life at the Coram Hospital in London. In reality, however, the unfortunate children are sold into slavery, or 'disposed’ of. Toby and Aaron find themselves bound together in a journey, fraught with danger and excitement.

Miss Garip As a family (my dad is the one in the photos), we have created a ‘library’ for our community where we can swap books. My parents weren’t happy that children couldn’t read if they couldn’t afford to buy books. So, here is my dad, whom only managed to finish primary school back home, and our community library!

#WritersPerch A War Photography Diary Entry (Part 2) by Campbell Willson, 9S Speaking of showing my pictures to the world— they do not care! They are living well and so do not care for how other people live. They just have half a glance at the newspapers that have my emotional and moving images in and move on with their lives. They look at it and see the struggles but then forget about them, the kids that are there, that are affected, they look at it and leave. After all I did, after all they (the soldiers) have been through the least you thought the public could do is buy the paper. But no, they are much more focused on cooking themselves a Sunday lunch with all the food imaginable chicken, potatoes, parsnips, carrots, broccoli, Yorkshire puddings, gravy, oh how I would die for gravy. Well not literally. They sit snug at home with their food and alcohol in the sunshine happy as can be. The pub gardens full to the brim no tables left and people occupying anywhere they can. That’s what they are doing instead of looking at the events that are going on in this war-torn country that is now home to an abundance of bodies under the ground. The people that are here with me just wanting freedom but the people at home moaning about how the milk has gone out of date and yet when they go to the shops and walk past my piece again see the deaths of many innocent people they still only glance. They only ever glance! They will never care unless it is about them! They don’t care. How can you not care about these people it is an outrage that they are having to fight but nobody sees it because the people don’t care. Even the editors that are looking through my photos don’t seem to care because if they did they would be using more than five or six out of the hundreds I get a day. They don’t care about the people or me. They are just using me. They will never understand the mental effect taking all this pictures have and how much they have changed me and made me less positive. I’m now always in the presence of the ghosts of the people that have lost their life.
Year 9 pupil Dear dad, Ever since you left to fight for our country we have thought about you every second of every minute of every day. The whole family is missing you and are beginning to worry about you, hence the many letters I have sent to you. But I know you’re alive and I know that you wouldn’t let us down. How’s everything going? I miss us spending time together and I regret the opportunities where we could’ve bonded and I said no. I regret not showing all the attention I could to you before you left, and I miss us doing everything. from getting something to eat to going on long journeys. But I am still unnecessarily worrying about you because I know that God will take good care of you and make sure to bring you back home to our family. I kept the watch you gave me, as it’s one of the only things keeping me going on everyday, giving me hope that you are still alive. I still remember the day you left it for me on my bed, on your very last day. I hope God is keeping you safe, From your son.
