Message from the Headteacher
Dear Parents/ Carers
As we approach the end of a busy half-term at Roding Valley, it’s another opportunity for us to take stock and reflect on what has been - for many reasonsa very important year for us as a school. Finally, we have received confirmation from the Department for Education that a new temporary kitchen facility will be funded for us, and although we still await confirmation about the building works needed to fix the RAAC affected building, we will at least have a full kitchen service up and running for the beginning of the new academic year. Our project manager, site team and staff at CLP are working hard to ensure that this happens on schedule and ready for the return of all students.

Over the course of the year, I have written about the importance of high standards and high expectations. As a school, we are clear about expectations regarding uniform, attendance and punctuality. I would encourage you to help us maintain these standards by ensuring that your child comes to school in full uniform and wearing it correctly, including whilst travelling to and from school, all students should arrive at school with the correct equipment, on time, every single day. We believe that these high standards help all students to be able to focus on their academic study and the extra-curricular opportunities which we offer. We will, where necessary, use our Student Behaviour and Expectations Policy to sanction students where there are failures to meet our expectations, whilst being alert to the fact that we are working with young people, who will on occasions make mistakes. If you need any support with purchasing a school uniform, then please visit our pre-loved uniform page on the school website for more information.
Exam season is now well underway for both year 11 and year 13 students. They have started exceptionally well, and have been incredibly focussed over the past few weeks. We wish them all the best for their examinations and hope that they have a restful and productive half-term break.

We are very much looking forward to the year 11 and 13 leavers assemblies and proms, which will no doubt be a fantastic experience for all who are involved.
In addition to these events, next half-term we will also host the Year 6-7 Transition Day for the new year 7 cohort. There are a series of events designed to help support their transition over the coming weeks and months including the return of our Summer School in July. There is no doubt that the start to last year due to the closure of a section of the school site had a significant impact on the current year 7 cohort transition, therefore it is with great excitement that we are running a number of school trips in the summer term for these students. We have also reviewed and rewritten our ‘Rewards’ Policy, which we hope will now fully acknowledge and celebrate all of the wonderful efforts and achievements of all students. I am excited to share more details with you in the summer term about these changes, and what they will mean for your child.
On Wednesday 19th June our PTA (Parents and Teacher Association) have organised a wine tasting evening at 8 Rocks on the High Road- starting at 7.00pm. There will also be a selection of cheeses available included in the £20 ticket price. This is a great chance to meet with other parents and staff in an informal environment and get to know new people, or maybe come along with friends you made whilst at Roding Valley. Wine, cheese, good music and great company - an unmissable evening we hope! Book your tickets by emailing pta@rodingvalley.net
We very much value our PTA and the links it can forge between staff and parents, as well as the great benefits that a PTA can bring to the students and families. The PTA is a body of parents and teachers who work hard to provide funds to benefit the school and students. They work to enrich the resources and experiences of secondary school life for our children. This year they have agreed to support science, creative arts, media and the maths departments and have also made a financial contribution to the Year 11 Prom. Everything from a huge new TV and sound bar to games and puzzles. Without your support this would not be possible. The PTA Chair, Treasurer and Secretary took on their roles in Summer 2023 for 12 months, however they will be standing down at the end of the school year. We will, therefore, need to appoint replacements to volunteer from September. For further information and to find out more from our friendly PTA please contact pta@rodingvalley.netCLOSING DATE: 19th July 2024
Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Year 7 News
Message from Ms Hegerty
It is wild to think we have come to the end of our fifth half term of Year 7 with just one to go! It has been a pleasure to see how the majority of our year group have fully embraced secondary school life and are now settled in friendship groups, taken part in extra-curricular activities and have developed good relationships with their teachers and Academic Mentors. Let’s keep going with our high standard of uniform and punctuality for the rest of the year to end Year 7 on a high!
Last week we took time in our Personal Development sessions to raise awareness of the importance of mental health and the huge impact it has on our day to day lives. We explored the importance of developing healthy relationships and friendships with a focus on our emotions such as kindness, respect, love and trust. We understood the importance of our physical health and how this interlinks with our mental wellbeing - please see below 7 Lithium doing some mental health stretches to start their day!
Please can Year 7 ensure that they are fully prepared for learning with all the equipment they need for lessons and they always have a reading book with them for DEAR time. Please keep doing your online literacy curriculum on Bedrock and Accelerate Reader as there will be prizes at the end of our summer term!
Can I take this opportunity to remind students, parents and carers that RVHS uniform expectations must be adhered to and students will only be given uniform cards for missing items (i.e. shoes) in exceptional circumstances. In addition to this, can I remind parents and careers that toilet cards will only be given when medical evidence is provided to your son or daughter's Year Progress Leader.
Please bear in mind that our Academic Mentors should be your first point of contact if you have any questions or concerns with your child in school. Contact details for all staff can be found on our website here.
I hope you have a restful break and are raring to go for our last half term in Year 7!
Year 8 News
Message from Miss Reed
As we approach the end of another half term, it is a pleasure to see Year 8 students continue to work hard in their lessons, making progress and thrive throughout their school life here at Roding Valley. As we move into the final half term of Year 8, we need to ensure our standards remain high with regards to behaviour, uniform and punctuality to lessons and school.
After half term, there may be some slight timetable changes due to Year 11 and Year 13 leaving us and with Year 9 starting their GCSES. Students will all receive a new timetable on their first day back - Monday 3rd June.
Last week, you should have received the letter regarding a Year 8 Ski Trip which is taking place during the Easter Break 2025. I know students are really excited for this opportunity; having been on many of these trips myself, it is a fantastic trip for all levels of Skiers including those who have not skied before. If you have any questions regarding this trip, please email cifrim@rodingvalley.net

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net
Year 9 News
Message from Mr Ryan
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate quite a few students this half term. The first students I would like to celebrate are those who have participated in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme this week. I know for a fact that I wouldn't want to spend the night in a field, in a tent, in torrential rain but the children this week did and by all accounts did incredibly well. The Duke of Edinburgh scheme is such a fantastic opportunity to get involved in and looks really good on application forms for College/university. There will be other opportunities for students to apply and participate in this scheme next year.
The second is to acknowledge and celebrate the hard work put in by 11 students who participated in 'The Brilliant Club'. These students were given the opportunity to study with a PHD tutor from Exeter University. They had 6 hour - long seminars with this tutor studying the Theology and Science behind the question 'Does God Love Animals as Much as Humans? They were then set the challenge of writing a 2000-word essay on the topic. Most of the students entered did this and did incredibly well. They were then invited to a graduation ceremony at St Anne's College, Oxford. It was a lovely day and I hope the students enjoyed it and made the most of the opportunity. I look forward to offering this to more students next year.
The final congratulations are to our Bedrock champions Nathan and Alexander B.
I do want to highlight a concern that I have at the moment surrounding 'banter' and the way the students in the year group deal with this. Banter generally speaking appears to happen between groups of friends. However, these comments can make the person on the receiving end feel miserable and unable to deal with it. If as a result of the banter a child feels miserable then they need to speak to either a member of staff, or a parent/carer. We can then intervene and try to find a solution to this. Another thing that we have noticed is students standing by whilst something happens rather than seeking help. Please could you have a conversation with your child to encourage them to again, seek help if there is something happening.
After half term, the year group start their GCSEs, I hope that they are ready and prepared to enter the next stage of their time at RVHS.
Have a restful half term and I will see you all raring to go when we return – Mr Ryan
Message from Ms Wills Year 10 News
As we finally enjoyed some good weather I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a good half term break.
It is of course time for our Year 10 students to begin their revision for their PPEs which begin on the 17th June. his week we have held very successful workshops, where we
advised students as to how to best prepare for their exams and hopefully they will have come away feeling confident about how they will plan their time wisely in the next few weeks. It was great to see so many students engaged in their own learning and discussing their different approaches to study. Students were given a revision timetable, which they have begun to fill in. It would be great if you could sit down with your child and go through this together. We also went through the school’s revision microsite, which has all the information for each subject. Microsite
You will have also received a letter with all the information in regards to the exam. Please see the timetable here for details of the exams themselves. Yr10 Mock Exam Timetable June 2024
After half term we will also be turning our attention to careers and preparing for the Careers Week in July as well as the 6th Form and College Taster Days. More information will be shared about this, however can I remind you to be completing the Take Your Child to Work Day form here by the 3rd June
Finally, we are looking towards the new academic year and preparing for the transition of Year 6 students. We would like to appoint Year 7 Enrichment Support prefects (YES Prefects) to assist with this process. Jobs include helping with summer school, acting as a mentor and working with Academic Mentor groups. If students would like to apply they should complete the form by clicking the following link YES prefect application by 7th June.

Year 12 - Exciting next steps as the oldest in the school
Year 12 are now the oldest in our school. This is a very exciting time for this exceptional cohort and our assemblies this week have reflected this. On Tuesday our assembly on being the ‘oldest in the school’ shared how important the next few months are for our year 12s, with PPE results, potential retakes, work experience and personal statement writing all coming up.
On Wednesday, we launched our student leadership application process. Mr Charlton spoke to the year group in Brook Study Area to launch these prestigious positions. We hope that everyone will put themselves forward for one of these roles. The details of our structure are given below.

Working hard is important, but so is a sense of balance. If you are concerned about your child feeling overwhelmed, or not coping well with the pressure of exams, please do get in touch with one of us. There are also some excellent resources for parents on how best to support your child on the NHS website, and from Young Minds. For our final sessions as the Year 13 reps of the Science and Medicine Society, we assembled an interactive investigation in which the students had to analyse DNA to see if the given people were related. It involved two scenarios, one to find the father of a child, and another to work out if the child was related to the parents. Both investigations were very successful, and everyone could figure out the answers.
We as the Year 13s have had a wonderful time running Science and Medicine Society, and are looking forward to hearing about what the Year 12s plan to do.
If you're interested in finding out yourself or joining the team of sixth formers, head to S2 Friday after school.

On 17th and 20th May a number of Year 9 and Year 7 students attended an educational activity on Crash Testing at the Royal Institution - Young Scientist Centre. They were exposed to how Newton’s Laws apply when cars are tested for their safety in a crash. Students were given the opportunity to share what makes cars safe, test different structures that are useful in car safety and build their own car for crash testing. The objective was to see if their egg would survive a crash in their model cars.
The school are super proud of what the students achieved on both days. They demonstrated and applied teamwork, leadership for some students and application of their scientific skills during the activity.
This activity inspired some students into future careers that caused them to see its relevance in their learning. Both year groups really enjoyed the activity, especially with the enthusiasm shown by our hosts Zoisa, Jin and Rachel at the Royal Institution. Mr Patel and Mr Khan ensured the students’ imagination and process in making their cars safe, drove them to build their cars. The final part was viewing the end results. For some, it was rather a ‘crushing’ experience. For some, it was an ‘eggcellent eggsperience’
Our aim in the Science faculty is that we continue to inspire our students in Science and provide them the opportunity to apply their skills from other subject areas for future educational visits.

KS3 Summer Showcase
This year’s showcase is all about Culture identity and me. Students in Y7-Y9 have been randomly selected to create their project based on this year's theme.
Students can choose a variety of ways to present this and will present this to parents, teachers, and their peers on Tuesday 9th July - all projects will be judged by a panel according to a criteria. This year has had a massive volume of students and we are very much excited to see these projects!
More information will follow after half term!
On Sunday the RVHS Year 8 and 9 Basketball Team headed to the O2 Arena to watch the British Basketball League Play Off finals! It was a great experience for them, and they were treated to a last second 3 pointer from the London Lions to see them crowned champions!
Congratulations and well done to the KS3 students who came 3rd in the Panathlon Event earlier this month –you absolutely smashed it!

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites
The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
