Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents/ Carers

I want to start this letter by offering my congratulations to all year 11 students, most of whom finished their GCSE exams today. There are a small number of exams that will continue over the next week or so, but for the majority of the cohort they are done. I spoke with the year group at the beginning of their final exam in Physics to tell them how proud of them I am for the way in which they have approached the exam season, and for all the hard work that they have put in over the past 5 years at Roding Valley. They now have a long summer to look forward to, starting with the Year 11 Leavers Assembly and Prom.

In my letter to all parents and carers earlier today (here) I announced that we are bringing forward the end of term for students to 19th July. This is to allow us to begin preparation for the new kitchen and catering facility that will be installed over the summer and also to allow some staff to change locations of offices and classrooms ahead of the new year. After 8 months with our new temporary buildings, we have a much clearer picture of how we want to organise the school next year to maximise the teaching and learning of all students and offer a full curriculum.

You may have read various newspaper articles over the last few weeks about the use of mobile phones in schools. The Department for Education (DfE) released guidance for schools on prohibiting the use of mobile phones throughout the school day in February of this year. In the foreword, Gillian Keegan talks about the ‘large variation in how different schools are managing the use of mobile phones. There is considerable good practice, including schools with exemplary behaviour cultures that are already implementing and enforcing tight restrictions. However, despite the best efforts of staff, in some settings, the use of mobile phones remains a daily battle.’

At Roding Valley, our Student Behaviour and Expectation Policy does permit students to bring mobile phones onto the school site, although this is discouraged. It states that ‘if students do bring mobile phones onto the school site, then they must be switched off and out of sight during the school day. Any phone that is seen on the school site will be confiscated. When a phone is confiscated, it is stored safely and securely in the School Office. On the first occasion, the phone will be returned to the student at the end of the school day. On the second or subsequent occasions, parents/carers will be expected to collect the phone on the student’s behalf.’

Given the recent updates from the DfE and increased media coverage, we are keen to open this debate to all stakeholders, and I would like to hear feedback from as many people as possible in advance of any possible changes that we make to our policy. If you would like to comment, please could you write to me at headteacher@rodingvalley.net with your thoughts on mobile phone use in school, and what you would like to see reflected in any new policy. Year 7 News

Message from Ms Hegerty

Year 7 have returned for their last half term of the academic year with gusto! They have been engaging with our new Numeracy REPS programme in tutor time brilliantly and I have had some great feedback from tutors over student’s effort and attainment regarding this new initiative. Students were delivered an assembly centralising around ideas of Freedom and Liberty last week to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings in 1944 as well as understanding how British Values are present in all of our day to day lives. Year 7 explored how British Values of Democracy, Mutual Respect and Tolerance, Rule of Law and Individual Liberty are directly applicable to them as Year 7s at RVHS with a focus on students using their own freedom and liberty for good to create positive change in their school community to accelerate their personal and academic growth in school.

Please can Year 7 ensure that they are fully prepared for learning with all the equipment they need for lessons and they always have a reading book with them for DEAR time. We are still limited with the catering facilities we have available at RVHS so we do encourage all students that are able to, to bring a packed lunch to avoid lengthy queues at break and lunchtimes (Year 7 are still able to purchase food in Zone 3 at these times).

Can I take this opportunity to remind students, parents and carers that RVHS uniform expectations must be adhered to and students will only be given uniform cards for missing items (i.e. shoes) in exceptional circumstances. In addition to this, can I remind parents and careers that toilet cards will only be given when medical evidence is provided to your son or daughter's Head of Year.

Please be aware that RVHS has a lost property in our PE Department and at Student Reception, we have had a rising number of PE kits going missing - please check at PE lost property first before coming to Student Reception - your PE teachers will be happy to help!

Our upcoming Year 7 and 8 residential trip to PGL at Caythorpe Court, Lincolnshire is fast approaching from Sunday 23rd June to Wednesday 26th June, please click here for the presentation from our Parent Information Evening with everything you need to know regarding the trip.

I look forward to accompanying some of Year 7 on their first residential trip with RVHS and hope it is a enjoyable and memorable experience for them.

Please bear in mind that our Year 7 Tutors should be your first point of contact if you have any questions or concerns with your child in school. You can find staff contact information on our website here.

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Year 9 News

Message from Mr Ryan

We have now reached the end of our first two weeks of GCSE. I cannot tell you how impressive the year group have been. They are all focused and producing excellent notes and resources. Virtually every day a member of staff is letting me know how pleased they are with the students in their classes. There are, as always, a few teething issues, some students have realised that the subject they have picked isn't really for them. What we have told the year group is to wait a couple of weeks and then let me know. Once the request has been made we will then look to see if we can make suitable changes. I can't guarantee that these will be made but we will definitely see what we can do.

As always Bedrock and Sparx maths need to be mentioned. It is vital that these are completed as they really do help the students in their GCSEs. Our Bedrock champion last week was Oliver K – 9Li

In relation to behaviour: I have to make people aware that the astro at lunch is just for a 'friendly kick about'. There should be no aggressive football. Also, you are only allowed on the pitch in the correct footwear. Students also need to be reminded that there is no need to 'lay hands' on each other, for any reason. Finally, in assembly last week I let the year group know that any student who decided to waste time between lessons would be given an automatic detention. I have barely seen any students out of lesson without a good reason.

This week was house week and it was lovely to see the posters that were being produced for Sports' Day. I believe the sign-up sheet for different events will soon be available.

Finally, I would just like to mention one student who has stood out as making the most change over the past week and that is Zahid E – 9Ne Well done!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please contact your child’s Academic Mentor in the first instance.

Year 10 are now in full preparation for exams and their future progression. Last week Mrs Curling and Mrs Mason delivered an assembly about the plans for careers week as well as the option to choose either a college or 6th form taster day. We hope that this experience will give all students an opportunity to understand what options are available to them next year and inform their decision making

Thank you also to those who have completed the Take Your Child to Work day form. If you have not done so, please can you ensure this is completed asap - TYCTW day form Next week Year 10 10 will begin their first set of PPEs. We hope that students have been using the resources provided for them in the workshops, through the microsite and from class teachers in order to prepare well. Microsite. The grades they gain in these exams will help to give a realistic idea as to how much progress students are making in their courses and what needs to be improved on in Year 11.

We have finally made it! I’m sure we are all glad to see the end of the GCSE exams and everyone can sleep a little better! I know how stressful and overwhelming this time has been, but I must congratulate the cohort for how they have carried themselves with respect and shown an incredible work ethic. We are so proud of them!

I did want to take this opportunity to thank our incredible invigilators, Year 11 Academic Mentor team, canteen team and SLT who have been there daily to ensure this process has been as smooth and successful as possible. A true team effort!

Message from Ms Wheaton & Mrs Curling

Record number of applicants for Head Prefect role

We had 34 students from year 12 put themselves forward for the role of Head Prefect. We are so proud of every student that applied. Many of them put themselves far outside their normal comfort zone. Six members of staff oversaw round one: a fishbowl activity to decide which 10 students should go forward to interview. This was incredibly tight and a very hard task for the staff involved to make this decision. All students should feel very proud of their efforts in the process, whether or not they made it through to round two.

Our new student executive team to congratulate are:

Head Prefects:

The Challenge and Enrichment Team are excited to announce that the Super Curricular Lectures (SCLs) will be starting again on Tuesday 18th June Staff and sixth formers from with our community will be delivering lectures to students in years 7-10 on areas beyond their subject expertise: to enthuse students on critical theories, important

important topics that impact their daily lives and to provide them with an insight into career opportunities that are available to them in a mature and intellectual setting. This is an excellent offer for students that will help to enrich their experience both within and outside of the classroom.

Essex County Schools Athletics Championships

On Saturday 8th June the Essex Schools District Athletics Championships was held for students in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 at Melbourne Park, Chelmsford. For the second year running Roding Valley had three students competing for the West Essex and Harlow District. It was a mixed day of results with Tyleah unfortunately missing out on qualifying for the 75m hurdles, Oscar finishing 4th in the 3000m in what was the first time he had competed in that event and Zoe who cruised to the 200m final, to then go and produce a personal best time of 26.02secs to win the 200m final and become Essex Champion! An incredible achievement! Zoe will go on to represent Essex in the Nationals later on this term.

Mr Allen would like to thank all the students involved for their fantastic effort and dedication to represent the school, compete for the district and give up their Saturday to attend this event.

Year 10 Cricket Team

Year 10 – Zoe H – 200m

Year 10 – Oscar E – 3000m

Year 8 - Tyleah E - 75m Hurdles

The Year 10 Cricket team won the Essex County Schools Tier 2 tournament on Wednesday 5th June at Billericay Cricket Club.

The team played Lammas in the semi-final, in the first game of the day winning that match with a great batting, bowling and fielding display and moved onto the final against St Thomas Moore.

Bowling first the year 10 team restricted the opposition to just 55 runs in their 10 overs with some excellent bowling, however, their batting didn't mirror the excellent work with the ball as they struggled to score the winning runs until the final ball of the match.

Well done to all the boys who were involved in this finals day, they have come so close on previous occasions so it is a huge achievement to win this tournament and be Essex Schools Tier 2 champions.

Well done to both the U13 and U15 boys Tennis Teams last week. They played some really competitive games and individual moments of brilliance during each of the different matches.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites

The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
