Thank you to all parents and carers for your hard work, patience and understanding over the past year. Roding Valley has seen significant change during this time, both planned and unplanned, and your ability and willingness to support us through this transition has enabled us to continue to build on the great work that has happened in recent years.
We have a series of major summer building works that are scheduled to take place during the holidays that will continue to improve the students’ day to day experience and allow them to focus on what matters; academic progress and meaningful enrichment.
In previous newsletters I have talked about our achievements this year, and am excited for what lies ahead as we move into the new academic year. In the past two weeks there have been several more events held in school, including the KS3 Summer Showcase and the Sports Awards. Both occasions were a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our students and acknowledge some of the outstanding work of our staff. Thank you for your attendance to these events, we know how important this is to the students and staff involved.
If you would like to keep up with all of our events and news, Roding Valley High School has a media service to circulate news updates to the local and regional media and our parents and contacts.
The service is provided by the Everything Local News media service - part of the Everything Epping Forest local news and information service.

Important opportunity for those aged 14-35 in the Loughton Community -The Friends at Loughton Methodist Church have arranged with the charity, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CR-Y) to promote heart screening in The Wesley Hall/LifeWorks over the weekend of 14th and 15th September 2024. Preferential booking of a time slot for one of the sessions is now live, and if you have a family member within this age group you are urged to take advantage of this opportunity. CRY promotes screening of young people to identify those at risk of sudden cardiac death, and when conducted correctly this screening can enable the heart condition to be treated, securing a future for those identified. Statistics show that in our country 12 young people a week die from an undiagnosed heart condition. This screening at LMC has been fully funded via The Robert Rowan Memorial Fund, benefitting CRY and all those being screened, so that no cost is involved for those attending. If you wish to book an appointment you can click on the following link - CR-Y Heart Screening for Young People Booking Form
Finally, we have a number of colleagues who are moving on to pastures new at the end of this year, they leave with our sincere thanks and best wishes for their future endeavours. We look forward to welcoming new staff to the Roding Valley community in the new year- we are very excited to work with them and learn from them to help further improve the teaching and learning in the school.
I hope that you have a restful summer and look forward to welcoming our students back in September and thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Year 7 News
Message from Ms Hegerty
I cannot believe we have made it to the end of Year 7 - well done to you all! So many of you in our year group have overcome fears and anxieties about transitioning to secondary school and you should feel very proud of how far you have come over the past eleven months!
I would like to congratulate Year 7 for their resilience and engagement during their first year at RVHS. Year 7 have made great progress academically and I am delighted to see the confidence gained and personal growth made by so many of the students in our year group whether that be through a sports club, extra-curricular activities, discovering a new subject they have a passion for and forming new friendships.
On Monday 15th July we had our Summer Celebration Assembly where students were recognised for their achievements across curriculum subjects, Bedrock, ARE points, Creative Writing, the KS3 Summer Showcase and recognition from Academic Mentors.
There were also two very special awards from Mr Charlton and myself –
huge well done to Oscar L - 7Ca who received the Year Progress Leader Award from myself and to Clara M - 7Ma who received the Headteachers Award from Mr Charlton.

Year 8 News
Message from Miss Reed
It is crazy to think that we are approaching the end of the Summer term and Year 8 for our students. They are fully settled into Roding Valley life now and will embark on their GCSE options next year in Year 9.
There have been lots of exciting events this year including trips, summer showcase, productions, Christmas concert, house events including sports day and our sports awards which took place this week. Well done to everyone in Year 8 who was part of these events this year.
We finished this year with a Celebration Assembly, it was so nice to see so many of them nominated for awards by different staff and departments.
You can click HERE to see our Summer Celebration Assembly
Students have worked incredibly hard this year despite the setback at the start of the year with RAAC. I am proud of each and every one of them and am excited to see them progress into Year 9.
I would like to wish everyone a safe and restful summer break and look forward to welcoming students back in September. A reminder that Year 9 will return on Wednesday 4th September

Year 9 News Message from Mr Ryan
I can't believe we've made it to the end of Year 9 already and that Year 10 is only 6 weeks away!
It really has been an absolute pleasure to guide the year group through the end of KS3 and onto their GCSEs. Reports were sent home last week and if there are any concerns over your son or daughter's report please contact the teacher directly.
I would like to thank Mr J Allen as he leaves the year team and move on to pastures new and Ms Stringer who leaves the year team. They have been an absolute pleasure to work with and I wish them well in the future.
I loved celebrating the year with the year group in our awards assembly and was so pleased by the amount of students who were nominated. It was also phenomenal at Sport's Day last week when so many Year 9 students competed. I also received feedback from a year 9 theatre trip where the students were complimented on their behaviour.
I hope everyone has a relaxing summer holidays and I look forward to seeing everyone in September.

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net
Message from Ms Wills Year 10 News
I can’t believe that we are at the end of the year already. I was reflecting on this time last year as I prepared to join RVHS with great anticipation and nerves. It now seems like I have been here for much longer! I want to thank all you parents and students for making me feel so welcome. I have grown very fond of the year group and it has been a pleasure to see them grow.
The last term has been one filled with much busyness but the students have embraced every opportunity and I am confident that they will go on to have great success in Year 11.
Sports day was a fantastic occasion and I hope a memorable one, given that it was the final one in their school career. Raysean N needs a special mention for completing so many events and running with such speed!
80 students attended a taster day at New City College last week and experienced a wide variety of courses from Electrician, Travel and Tourism and Business. I particularly enjoyed pretending to sit on a plane as well as having my nails done in the college’s salon by several of our students.
The rest of the year group have also had the experience of 6th form taster lessons and it was great to see them in the business wear - ready for the world of work. As well as brushing up on their interview skills during our Mock Interview Day
Furthermore, as part of the careers week all students took part in an enterprise workshop. Students had to create a business and present their proposal to the year group. There were some very creative ideas and the winning team ‘Wikiwear’ was an AI supported app which allows you to upload your clothes and then it creates a suggested outfit for you. This was highly commended for the ingenuity.
It has been wonderful to celebrate the achievements of Year 10 as well this week.
You can see all of our awards in our Celebration Assembly presentation HERE.
Finally, I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a very restful and hopefully sunny summer! You should have received your child’s report following on from the PPEs and hopefully this will now prepare them for the final year.
Year 11 News
Message from Miss Pinches
I just wanted to take the chance to remind parents of details regarding our results day in August. A letter was shared earlier this week, which you can find here, but key information is below:
Year 11 will be able to collect their results on Thursday 22nd August from 8.30am.
Students should use Brook Road gate, and weather permitting, we will be giving results envelopes out on the main playground.
Parents/Carers are welcome to join the students on the playground. It’s always a lovely morning, however, we would ask parents and carers not to join the queues and to wait for students to collect their results and then come and join them. This will help us to give envelopes out as quickly as possible.
It is important that your son/daughter is available on this day to collect their results in person. If, for some reason, they cannot collect their results; please contact our examinations officer on kjohal@rodingvalley.net to state who will be collecting them on their behalf. If they are also wishing to enrol into our Sixth form, then you must also contact sixthformoffice@rodingvalley.net directly to alert them.
The end of a year has come and that concludes our house season! Rendell have done their absolute best to hold on to the top spot for the podium and was in the driving seat most of the year so a massive well done to all students in Rendell that made that possible!
A huge well done to Pankhurst for holding on and chasing Rendell, with a narrow gap of only 29 points by the end of it - hopefully next year will be the year we see Pankhurst in that top spot!
Commiserations to all other houses that have contributed to the scoreboards and next year will be a fresh start - the race begins again!
6th Form News
Message from Ms Wheaton & Mrs Curling
Welcome to our new House Captains and Sixth Form Captains 2024-2025. A record-breaking number of students stepped out of their comfort zones and put themselves forward for student leadership positions. Every student that took part did extremely well and it was very challenging to differentiate between the candidates. The students below did exceptionally well and have been appointed as either House Captains or Sixth form Captains.
Super Curricular Lectures still running!
A big shout out to our Year 12’s who have been supporting the Super Curricular Lecture programme by delivering lectures to our lower school students. This year is the first year that year 12 students have been invited to present to students in years 7-9 and they are doing themselves proud. The presentations last 30 minutes and each year 12 student has created an absolutely brilliant presentation to impart knowledge onto their younger peers. It has been noted that they are delivering high quality lectures with passion and are engaging our younger students in thought-provoking concepts - We are proud of you Year 12!

Back in September, club attendees were making humane mouse traps out of waste. After the initial presentation of the project, students were inspired to create their own traps. Following the theme of using waste materials, students took the opportunity in making stationary tidies and magnetic whiteboard pen holders out of cardboard.
L-R: Neo, Ming-Sheng, James, Summer
Students were also able to create luminous lava lamps. They made them in plastic bottles, with food colouring vegetable oil and baking soda. They made great additions in their rooms.
During the Christmas season students created Christmas trees for the holidays. They were made from wooden skewers and tinsel, using chemistry beakers as their bases. They made festive additions in some of the science labs. Especially the Christmas chemisTree.
L-R: Maya, Robyn
In the second half of the year the STEM club students took part in the British Science Week 2024 during March to present their projects they completed last year. This caused more students to join the STEM club, which was encouraging.
Because some science teachers would prefer to look at a clock rather than at the small corner of their laptops for the time, the STEM club took initiative in creating clocks but not as you know them. They chose different themes including a calming sunset as they read the time
Finally, led by the Year 12 Science representatives, collaborating with the Medical and Science Society, Quails were raised to understand the development of avians, how to manage and care for living organisms. They all have wonderful homes to go to before the end of the year.
Mr Saghir would like to thank the following Year 12 Science representatives for their hard work and diligence during their voluntary time for STEM club:
AJ Ema Natalia Xixuan Laiba
We hope they will continue to support us next year.
We hope that our future Year 7 and the current Year 7 students will continue to participate in the STEM club next academic year. However, if you have a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, or Maths, please join us in September. See you then!

With every year that goes by with my wonderful Creative Writing Club students, I am reminded that Roding Valley High School is home to some of the most brilliant, inquisitive and creative minds in the kindest and most enthusiastic students you could imagine. I feel privileged to spend my Friday lunchtimes with a group of young people who, every week without fail, put the biggest smile on my face.
This year we have been exploring so many different topics: some based on the world around us, some have taken us on supernatural adventures, whilst others take us to darker places where we wonder if good will triumph over evil…
Not only have our students experimented with different genres of writing, but also with different forms so you will be able to enjoy stories, non-fiction pieces, poems and even a play! What more could anyone ask for?
You will be astounded by the quality of the work that has been produced for this booklet, because I know I was. Even though I know my Creative Writing Club students are incredible writers, every year they stun me with their beautiful vocabulary, the crafting of their sentences and their ‘out of this world’ imaginations. For pieces of writing like this to have come from such young minds…who knows what the future will bring for these excellent writers? It wouldn’t shock me if they all went on to be bestselling novelists, poets and playwrights and just remember, you saw them HERE first!
Creative Writing Club is sadly over for another year, but we will be back again for more fun next year so keep writing over the summer and I can’t wait to see you back in September! – Miss Woods
On Monday 15th July Year 10 took part in an Enterprise Day. The day was run by Apprentice star Adam Corbally who was very enthusiastic during the whole day. Students were tasked to pitch an idea that 'will have a positive impact on the environment' or 'solve a real-life problem'. The winning team was Wiki Wardrobes - congratulations to Daisy P, Nick M, James M and Miley O.
Tuesday 16th July saw the return of the prestigious sports awards evening hosted by the PE Department. It was a fantastic evening to celebrate the success of students who have represented the school in fixtures this year and students in their PE lessons.
With over 200 students and parents/carers in attendance it was a great review of the sporting year.
Students who represented the school received a colour badge to proudly wear on their blazer to continue the tradition the PE Department started last year. Depending on how many teams they represented.

It was a fantastic evening of celebration, thank you to all those students and parents/carers who attended. We look forward to seeing students wearing their PE Colours badge around school on their blazers.
Thursday 4th and Wednesday 10th July saw the Sports Day format continue over two days at Roding Valley with two days of brilliant athletics and inter house competition.
The format of day 1 on Thursday 4th July remained the same as previous years with each
year group making their way to PE to complete in the field events (long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, javelin and high jump), the long and middle distance track events (1500m and 800m) as well as the 50m hurdles and 300m/400m sprint events in their morning lessons and then competing in the tug of war in the afternoon.
In each event students are allowed a maximum of two boys and two girls with 10 house points on offer for the winning student in each event.
The afternoons tug of war competition saw combined year group teams battle it out. The eventual winners in a very competitive competition with Murray being victorious after not losing a single pull during the competition.
Wednesday 10th July saw the sprint athletics programme of 200m, 100m and relays with the whole school attendance on the field. Alongside these events students could also take part in the same activities as last year on the other field such as the darts throw, bean bag toss and welly boot throw but also two new events; the chest push and archery. These seemed to be a hit with both students and staff and a huge amount of points were won from these five events.
Over the two days a total of 13 new Sports Day records were created by our students. Year 8 continued their dominance at creating new records by securing 6 new records. Year 9 and Year 10 created 3 new records each, with Year 7 achieving 1 new record. Some of these Sports day records date back to 2017 so it is great to see students challenging themselves to set new records and hopefully have their name there for years to come.
The last event of the day and a big favourite of the students saw the Staff inter house relay race. Excitement was building prior to the day and all afternoon from students and staff a like for this race, and it didn’t disappoint.
This event always catches the student’s imagination as they lined the finishing straight to witness members of staff compete for their house in the final event of the day, with Rendell house led by Mr Cocker storming home to win their first staff relay after Murray had led the race all the way to the final 50m.
The final results were revealed on the day and overall winner of Sports Day 2024 was Murray, securing their first ever Sports Day title and adding a new name to the sports day trophy with a total of 1150 points. Well done Murray!

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a ositive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites
The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried.
You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.
If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
