We are fast approaching the end of this half term and we know that our families will be very much looking forward to spending some time together during the upcoming half term break. Just a reminder to parents and carers, that the last day of half term for students is Thursday 24th October.
Last week we held a series of Open Morning events which we attended by well over 1000 people! On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning we opened our doors to prospective parents and students to see our school in action. I was supported by a fantastic team of Year 8 tour guides that showed our visitors around our school; popping in and out of lessons and answering questions. Every single one of our visitors wanted to tell me how fantastic those students were. I wanted to thank them all publicly for their efforts and we celebrated with a hot chocolate this week! Those students were Crystal Mathieson, Hayden Woodman, Alfie Essl, Aarav Mahajan, Maya Jaunky, Maria Ghounbaz, Eliana Farquharson, Nicolas Gigauri, Archie Donovan and Joe Philips.
We also held a Road Safety talk for our Year 7 cohort as part of our Personal Development curriculum. They gave important messages about how to stay safe, especially in our local context, when crossing roads and making their way to and from school. Having external speakers and companies come in to speak to students about such important topics is a massive part of this curriculum. We look forward to welcoming another group - ‘Prison Me, No Way’, next week, to put on a performance for our Year 9 cohort.
Our Year 13 students were also very busy this week. In preparation for their upcoming PPEs, they took part in a revision and study skill workshop led by Mr Cocker. During this time, they really got to grips with the structure of their upcoming exam papers and had a chance to revisit our bespoke revision microsite. Please click here to access it.
In assemblies last week Mr Anandappa (Assistant Headteacher) launched applications for the House Leader roles in each Year Group - a big part of our 2024-25 Student Voice. This is the first of many opportunities for students across all year groups to represent the student body in roles such as Student Council, Sport and Community reps.
Successful applicants will represent the houses in their year group. The deadline for applications is 18th October! Please encourage your children to consider making an application- they can do so by clicking here.
Are you a STEMazing parent/carer? Then we would love to hear from you! Please complete the form by clicking this link.
Lastly, a final reminder to our Year 7 parents about the event below:

Year 7 News
Message from Miss Aston
Year 7's are thriving both in and out of lessons!
Just a reminder that we have a superb Year 7 team of Form Tutors who are your first port of call if you have any questions or concerns.
Please could I remind students to carry a reading book, reading passports, and their full pencil case every day. If incorrect equipment has been bought in, unfortunately form tutors will have to award negative behaviour points and detentions.
Please remember that our Chromebook day has changed to Monday and Wednesday. It is compulsory that students bring in their chromebooks on this day. Students will now be using exercise books for their Friday PD.
Year 7's had their first experience of House Week at Roding Valley last week, and were very competitive in receiving the most House Points for their House. I would like to congratulate the following students for the Star of The Form Award:
Lucas O’Connor 7Ar Salway Inayat 7Be Lily Bennett 7CA
Layla Harrison 7Fl Christopher Jones 7Li Bella Darby-Russell 7Ma
Darcie Curtis 7Ne
Nancy Gibson 7Ox
Also, congratulations to Edjan Osmanaj 7Fl for the Highest House Points overall in Year 7!
Well done Nyah Heath 7Ox for winning the 100% Attendance Award in her House Assembly
Year 7's also had an exciting production last week from Road Safety, and the feedback from the engagement of Year 7's was excellent - I was very proud! You can see more about this further on in this bulletin.
Year 8 News
Message from Ms Hegerty
We are in the midst of a jam-packed half term in Year 8 and students have been busy with their studies, extracurricular activities and personal development themes throughout form time.
I would like to start by thanking the students from Year 8 who volunteered as tour guides at our Open Morning on Saturday 28th September! You were welcoming, friendly and provided informative and efficient tours to all of our guests and I had so many comments from staff and parents over how fantastic you were - thank you! I felt very proud to be your Head of Year!
We have been celebrating Black History Month in October at RVHS through this year's theme of Reclaiming Narratives where students are exploring the shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture alongside acknowledging and celebrating the contributions of Black people to British society as well as globally. In assembly Year 8 looked at the differing experiences of people who came to Britain after the Second World War on Empire Windrush and how the legacy of this migration has lived on in British culture still impacting people today. Students are also being shown short videos in form time regarding reclaiming the narratives of Black British history every day in October to keep this vitally important discourse at the forefront of their minds for discussion and exploration in other personal development activities.
Please can Year 8 ensure that they are fully prepared for learning with the equipment they need for lessons and that they always have a reading book with them for DEAR time. We ask that Year 8 students bring their Chromebooks on Mondays and Thursdays to complete E-WSPD and Bedrock in tutor time
Finally, a huge thank you to all Year 8 students who are helping out at our Open Morning on Saturday the 28th September either as tour guides or in faculties - we really appreciate you representing our school community!
Can I take this opportunity to remind students, parents and carers that RVHS uniform expectations must be adhered to and students will only be given uniform cards for missing items (i.e. shoes) in exceptional circumstances. In addition to this, can I remind parents and careers that toilet cards will only be given when medical evidence is provided to your son or daughter's Head of Year.
As always, if you have any concerns or questions please contact your child’s Form Tutor in the first instance.

Message from Mr Ryan Year 10 News
We have nearly reached the end of the first half term and the year group are doing incredibly well in their GCSE courses. It is an absolute pleasure to walk into year 10 lessons and see and hear what they are learning and to see how seriously they are taking their lessons. I am also thrilled to see so many students actively engaging in their Form Tutor groups and enjoying the discussions that are generated in Personal Development.
Moving forward through the year we will need to think about Careers and CV writing. There are so many opportunities to get involved in the wider school community. These look really good on CVs. I would personally like to thank all those year 10 students who participated in Open Morning and those who volunteered to assist with last night's year 11 Parents' Evening.
Last week during house week we were able to celebrate the success of quite a few students. We celebrated those with 100% attendance and those who had been nominated as stars of the form
Ion Batcu – 10Ar
Imogen Benjamin – 10Be
Casper Bramley – 10 Ca Andrei Artenie – 10 Fl
Stefan Delport – 10Li Aneta Charvatova – 10Ma

Harry Elliot – 10Ox
Please remember to contact your child's form tutor in the first instance should there be any concerns. 10 Argon
It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Year 11 Progress Evening. There were lots of purposeful conversations and hopefully this gave you a good indication of what your child needs to do in order to perform well in the next set of PPEs. These will take place for two weeks beginning 11th November, a timetable will be sent out nearer the time.
In advance of this, Mr Miah and Mr Cocker will be arranging another revision workshop, in order to help prepare students for the exams.
These exams are obviously important in helping students understand where they are currently working, but also give an indication of which courses to now consider when applying to further education.
Mrs Mason, our careers advisor, has begun to hold careers interviews with students. All students have received this booklet Year 11 Transition Guide 2024.pdf and there is also our dedicated microsite which has information for you to look over Roding Valley Careers (google.com)
I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that our outstanding 6th Form Opening Evening is the 5th December. Please book in via the QR code
As we look towards the exams, it is also important to remember the celebrations and I am pleased to say that the Year 11 Prom will be taking place on 19th June at Woolston Manor, so please save the date! We will be launching the Passport to the Prom in December!
Finally, we want to celebrate the success of students in Year 11 and the hard work they are putting in.
Congratulations to Shannon Poon 11Li on achieving the most house points so far this year!

Message from Ms Wheaton & Mrs Curling
Bancrofts School visit for aspiring Oxbridge Mathematicians - Thursday 26th September
We were invited by Bancrofts to send some of our students who would like to study Maths at Cambridge University to their school to listen to an alumni student. Six of our current students attended this talk. Here are a couple of the students' feedback on the event:
‘The talk was given to us by Alex who was a past Cambridge student and spoke to us about his experience of studying maths at Cambridge university. From the talk we learned about the structure of the maths course and the types of areas of maths we would learn. Alex then spoke about the mathematical modelling of how diseases spread showing us how maths can be applied into real world examples. Overall the talk gave us a valuable insight into Cambridge maths and I am very grateful for it’ - Sam
‘Recently Bancrofts has provided me with the opportunity to attend a talk, run by a Cambridge alumni. He enlightened me about the maths courses run at the Russell group university, going into detail about the statistics courses: more specifically about the correlation between population and diseases. The concepts explained were applied to familiar scenes, like COVID-19 (explaining the effectiveness of quarantining, representing data on graphs, and using formulas to justify them), as well as more historic events- like the Spanish flu. This talk also explained the reality of working through a Cambridge mathematics course, as Alex spoke about the hours of work he put in, and what paths we could take within the subject, as well as the journey we could take on after graduating: just like Alex is moving on to get a PHD in Oxford university as of this academic year. Overall, this event was extremely inspirational, and I hope to one day achieve something half as impressive as what he did’ - Luka

- Yr12 Team Building day - Lambourne End
Our annual trip to Lambourne End was a resounding success - with no amount of rain able to dampen our sixth formers’ spirits. Students threw themselves into a wide range of outdoor activities, with some entering the river crossing multiple times because they enjoyed it so much the first time! Thank you to all the staff who supported this trip in very wet conditions - Ms Mason, Ms Parton, Mr Murray, Mr Warry and Mr Campbell - I’m not sure who liked it most - students or staff!
‘Lambourne end was definitely a trip worth attending, I got to meet with some new peers I didn't previously know and I also got to challenge myself in various scenarios’Lukas
6th Form News
Wednesday 25th September - Colchester V Roding Valley Sixth Form - League match
Our league campaign kicked off against Colchester Community Sixth form programme. In very wet and windy weather conditions, both teams worked hard to get ahead, unfortunately Colchester took the lead from a set piece and then countered very quickly for the second. The weather continued to influence the game, causing both teams to change their playing style. Colchester managed to get a third, however, Roding managed to get a goal back and began to build momentum. After a few missed opportunities we were then punished on the counter attack and lost the game 4-1.
Tuesday 8th October 2024 - PWC employer talk
We kicked off Employer Tuesdays with PWC this week! Students heard all about the different pathways into PWC including degree apprenticeships, school leaver programmes and graduate pathways. If students are in Year 13 and looking for an apprenticeship PWC offers a variety of opportunities. Year 12 keep an eye out for their work experience programme. Anyone that needs help to apply for apprenticeships Mrs Mason will be in the study centre every Wednesday lunchtime.
Working hard is important, but so is a sense of balance. If you are concerned about your child feeling overwhelmed, or not coping well with the pressure of exams, please do get in touch with one of us. There are also some excellent resources for parents on how best to support your child on the NHS website, and from Young Minds.
Dates for your diary:
• Every Monday - Sixth Form assembly in the Sports Hall
• 15th October - UCAS early applicant deadline
• 12th December - Internal UCAS deadline for all pupils applying to university
• Thursday 5th December - Sixth Form Open Evening

STEM Club 2024-2025
After the Summer break and Open Morning, STEM club started back up again. Due to the success of the last projects, STEM club will be focused on sustainability projects. From the below the first product is making clocks out of recyclable materials. They have shown their creativity as well as their understanding of using sustainable materials to create useful clocks that we hope students, teachers, and any other interest people would use.
In the future, the STEM club has planned to do some exciting and engaging projects, one of them involves rockets with renewable resources! STEM club is open every Tuesday after school from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
World Space Week and Black History Month
From 4th 10th October was World Space Week. Below is a short history of one woman who had a positive impact on Space and Space exploration.
Last academic year, some Year 7 students participated in the race to the line competition. Due to the popularity of the activity, the competition will be open to all Year 7 students for the hope that they will use their different skills in this competition in creating sustainable rocket cars. No sign up is needed but more details will follow in the next bulletin. STEM hopes that every year seven will be able to show their skills in this competition, and potentially enter into a regional final.

Last Thursday year 7 had a performance by the ARC theatre group called 'Stop and Think'
The key message is about ‘Stop and Search’ and ‘Stop and Account’, and how pupils can improve relations with the police if they consider their actions and behaviour including:
• Why the Police use Stop and Search or Stop and Account and the difference between them
• Young people’s legal rights and responsibilities
• What behaviours might cause young people to be stopped
• How to behave during a stop in order that no offences are committed as a result of the procedure itself
We got some great feedback from the theatre company - well done year 7 – we are really proud of you!
'Aaron and I thoroughly enjoyed working with your Y7 cohort this morning. It was impressive how such a large audience was so well behaved, but also full of exactly the right energy we needed for the project. They stayed so engaged and asked very sensible questions. It felt like we gave them a lot to think about today, and they took it all on board. They really were a credit to the school.' –ARC Theatre Group

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites
The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried.
You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.
If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
