As we come towards the end of a long but very fulfilling half-term, I want to start off by saying how incredibly happy we are with the start that has been made to the academic year. Our students and staff have worked very hard over the past 8 weeks to ensure the best possible start to what we expect to be another successful year for Roding Valley. During this time, we have welcomed lots of visitors into our school and each one has commented on the positive atmosphere that they have felt as they have walked around the building and we are really driven to maintain this as the year progresses.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have held a number of exciting events in school. Our entire Year 9 cohort experienced a ‘Drop Down Day’ organised by Mrs Preston (Head of Personal Development), from the group ‘Prison Me, No Way!’. The organisation tours around the country educating students on how to stay safe and the consequences that we all face if we make the wrong choices. The organisation commented on how engaged and polite our students were; we were exceptionally proud of them. Ms Wills, Associate Assistant Head Teacher and Head of Year 11, also ran our first ever Roding Valley Foundation Quiz Night. It was so well supported by so many parents, carers and teachers. In fact, we are already organising our next event! If you wish to be a part of the Roding Valley Foundation, then you can contact Ms Wills directly - rwills@rodingvalley.net.
It’s also important to mention that both our Year 11 and 13 cohorts will be entering into their first PPE (Pre Public Examination) season of the year when we return after the half term break. I know that they have been working really hard on their ‘RVHS Tried and Tested’ revision techniques. We wish them every success in these upcoming ‘mock’ examinations. Please remember that there are an abundance of helpful resources that students, parents and carers can all access. Please click here to access both the GCSE & A-Level bespoke microsites.
Just a reminder that we return, after the half term break, on Monday 4th November at normal school time. All students must be in their form room by 8.30am. Our drive on punctuality to school has been hugely successful this term and we are determined to keep to these high standards throughout the academic year. During tutor time there will be a uniform and equipment check - please review our dress code here if you are uncertain regarding any aspect of this.
Before you take a look at this week’s ‘Star of the week’ in each year group, I also wanted to share the names of the students which I was lucky enough to have hot chocolate with this week! Alana Levendale Turner was nominated by the English department for fantastic work in the ‘White Poppies’ project; it was lovely to talk to her about this in more detail. A group of Year 12 CTEC sport studentsNaga Epelle, Luke Gosling, Luke Passmore, Brannon Hughes, Murtaza Malik, Jacob Winter and Daniel Igwe, were also nominated by Ms Stevens-Woods and Ms Larkin for their excellent presentations. Again, I loved hearing about these from the students themselves.

There is also a flyer which you can find here with more information. I had the pleasure of visiting Staples Road earlier in the year and was amazed at the fantastic teaching on display. Message from Mr Ryan Year 10 News
We have made it to half term! That's technically 1/3 of the school year done. I know that I am needing a break so can't imagine how the children feel at this time. What I would suggest is that over the half term, everyone takes some time to relax and recharge in preparation for next half term. As I have popped in and out of lessons over the past couple of weeks I have been very impressed by the work that is being
produced by the students. Also, the fact that they are completing their first pieces of coursework in some subjects is really impressive. If you would like to know how your child is performing in certain subjects please contact the teacher in question, or their form tutor.
I was asked to nominate five students this week who would receive awards in assembly for having a positive attitude towards our culture and ethos at Roding Valley. This made me realise that there are so many wonderful students in the year group. The five nominated are:
Sindi Fejzaj Lily Barlow Cerys Clark
Elijah Camplin Nathaniel Sanderson
Please remember to contact your child's form tutor in the first instance should there be any concerns.
I hope everyone has a lovely half term and I look forward to seeing some rested and motivated people ready for the next half!

Year 11 News
Message from Ms Wills
The half term has flown by and already we are preparing for the next round of PPEs.
Please find the timetable here: YEAR 11 PPEs TIMETABLE – November 2024
In order to help prepare students for these exams, we held revision workshops last week. Mr Cocker gave them a very informative and engaging session on what and how to revise, alongside some helpful resources. I hope that your child found this useful, as they now begin their revision. I have also shared a short video with their tutors on revision, which may be worth looking at with them here.
Mrs Mason, our Careers Leader, is continuing to hold careers appointments with students and aims to meet with everyone. Some of these will be group sessions, however if you feel your child would benefit from a 1:1 appointment please do contact her directly at dmason@rodingvalley.net You can see our Year 11 Transition Guide 2024.pdf and there is also our dedicated microsite which has information for you to look over Roding Valley Careers (google.com)
Reminder
Our 6th Form Open Evening is on 5th December. Please book via the QR code.
A huge well done to the following students on having the most achievement points in the Year Group this half term: Ethan Joyce, Olivia Hambleton, Jake Bramley, Kaliyah Brown and Chloe Jones
Can I also remind you of the importance of attendance in Year 11 - 95% is classed as minimum expected attendance. It is vital that students are in every day so that they do not miss out on vital learning.
Save the date… Thursday 19th June 2025

Message from Ms Wheaton & Mrs Curling
UCAS applications already sent
Well done to all year 13s who have already submitted their UCAS applications. We submitted a record number of early applications this year (Oxbridge, Dentistry, Medicine and Veterinary). These students have often already sat an additional test before their application too which involves many hours of hard work and practice throughout summer so a very special well done to them. We have also submitted other applications outside this narrow group and in some cases, had students receive offers from prestigious universities such as Birmingham and Edinburgh within 48 hours. This just shows how there can be an early mover advantage, with their university admissions teams not yet inundated with applications. Do keep supporting your child to finalise their personal statements, work with their tutors on their references and to book an appointment, ahead of our internal UCAS deadline of 12th December.

Now a Business & Marketing executive with VCCP, he came back to share his story and tell students all about careers in advertising and how to apply for the ‘Table’.
The study centre was absolutely packed and Fin then went on to support our Media department with a presentation for their GCSE programme.
Anyone that needs help to apply for apprenticeships Mrs Mason will be in the study centre every Wednesday lunchtime.

6th Form News
‘As a sixth form student, I have found the sixth form bulletin extremely helpful. It has enabled me to be aware of insightful prospects that aid me with a head start for my career. By constantly reading the bulletin I have managed to get placements at law events and achieve three work experience certificates in technology and law. During these amazing opportunities, I have adequately been able to gain more knowledge about the different aspects of jurisprudence, build a professional reputation and also build applicable skills. I have also been able to network which has led me to even more opportunities. This is your sign to start engaging with the bulletin as it opens a window of opportunities and provides information that is available to all students. Thank you, Mrs Mason, for all the hard work you do!’ - Thais
Working hard is important, but so is a sense of balance. If you are concerned about your child feeling overwhelmed, or not coping well with the pressure of exams, please do get in touch with one of us. STEM Club 2024-2025
Coming to the end of this half term, STEM club decided to create something ghoulish. The STEMers created puking pumpkins using chemicals you can find in your home and carved different scary faces into the pumpkins. Students enjoyed creating their pumpkins and making them puke!
The STEM club still is planning to do some exciting and engaging projects, where one of them involves rockets with renewable resources. STEM club is open every Tuesday after school from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
Last academic year, a number of Year 7 students participated in the race to the line competition. Due to the popularity of the activity, the competition will be open to all Year 7 students in the hope that they will use their different skills in this competition in creating sustainable rocket cars. No sign up is needed but more details will follow in the next bulletin. STEM hopes that every Year7 will be able to show their skills in this competition, and potentially enter into a regional final.

On the 21st October, we had an in-house event for students to see different animals as pets. A number of students came along to see Ema and AJ present their “unusual” pets with them. It was not only informative but the students were engaged with the owners and the pets in question. All the students agreed that they really enjoyed this event and are looking forward to more events like this in the future!
KS3 Baseline Assessment Art Champions
The baseline assessment task is a drawing and shading skills-based assessment which is conducted at the start of every academic year. It allows the teacher to gain a quick overview of the drawing strengths and weaknesses of individuals within the class.
The task runs over 2 lessons, including time for ‘Closing the Gap’ (selfassessment, peer marking or live marking opportunities).
Students are advised to complete the task under ‘exam conditions’ in line with any other assessments around the school - working in silence to give their full concentration and commitment to the task.

Year 11 students in GCSE Drama have been preparing for their Component 1 performance exam. A showcase to parents took place on Thursday 24th October, followed by their exam after half term. They have been working exceptionally hard and spending lots of their lunch times rehearsing in the drama studios. This image shows some experiments with lighting, carried out by Sonny who is a lighting candidate instead of an actor. We also have Eloise who is being assessed as a costume designer. Break a leg everyone!
Year 10 GCSE Drama students have been preparing drama pieces using the format and conventions of theatre in education (TIE), which is the style of educational theatre that often visits schools. They will be presenting their TIT plays to the students in Mr Wilson's tutor group, 7Li. The Y10s did research into the Y7s, to find out how they felt about certain issues, such as starting a new school and being yourself. The Y7s will be able to see how their own ideas and opinions have been used to create the drama pieces.
Mr Wilson has started this year's National Theatre Connections project, with a great group of actors from Years 8 to 10, and Tony from Y12 as assistant director. Brain Play will be performed at Queens Theatre in Hornchurch in the spring. In the meantime, Mr Wilson attended the directors retreat at the National Theatre last Saturday, to meet the playwrights and learn all about the exciting choral work and puppetry that will be a key part of this brilliant new play.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites
The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried.
You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.
If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
