Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents/Carers

We have made an excellent start to the second half term of the academic year with plenty of exciting events taking place.

Both our Year 11 and Year 13 cohorts are deep into their Pre Public Examinations (PPEs) and it’s been wonderfully reassuring to see how maturely they have approached these important exams. Once this cycle is complete, our teaching staff will be busy assessing and preparing our students for their ‘closing the gap’ tasks, so that our students know exactly where they performed well and more importantly, what they need to do to improve for the second round of assessments later on this academic year.

This week we also marked remembrance and Armistice day with a whole school, virtual, assembly and a series of year group assemblies led by Ms Preston (Head of Personal Development) and Mr Cocker (Head of Humanities). We all stood together and participated in two minutes silence, followed by a powerful message from two of our Year 13 English literature students; Bella and Amber. They spoke so eloquently about their war poetry studies and read a poem by Wilfred Owen.

Last week was an exciting week from a trips and visits perspective. A large group of Year 7 students watched Matilda in the West End with Ms Joseph and the Drama department. They were wonderfully behaved and represented our school brilliantly. The beginning of the week also began with a Hospitality and Catering trip to Westminster Kingsway college for our Year 10 and 11 catering students. It was a tremendous opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and improve their GCSE skills in preparation for their practical exam.

Food Allergens Reminder - Within a school community there will be students who have some mild allergies whilst others can be more severe and potentially life threatening.

With the above in mind we would like to ask you to remind your child(ren) to always ask our canteen staff if they are unsure what ingredients have been used. Also, please ensure if your child has any known allergies we are made aware so we can best support them in school & if required hold medication.

If you have any questions regarding this please contact Mrs Gladman via sgladman@rodingvalley.net

As always, I rounded off my week by spending some time with students that are nominated to have ‘Hot Chocolate with the Headteacher’. Last Friday, it was the turn of our champion swimming gala team who fought off stuff competition from 10 other schools and win the event! Well done to Billy Kiff, Nathaniel Sanderson, Oliver Conway, Anthony Aldrich, Alexander McKay, Ruby Fitzsimon and Eleora Smith. This week, I met with Bella Eaton and Amber Gordon; the two 6th form students that led a section of our whole school remembrance assembly. These events really are the highlight of my week and it reminds me every day how fortunate we are to have such excellent students in our school.

Finally, those of you who live and travel near to the school will have noticed that scaffolding is being erected around the RAAC affected building. This is the first stage in the repair process and is welcome news for everyone associated with the school. I will continue to update you throughout this process.

Year 8 News

Message from Ms Hegerty

Year 8 are straight back into the swing of things this half term and are as busy as ever! We have been exploring diverse and inclusive themes in our Personal Development curriculum such as Remembrance, Anti-Bullying and Disabilities Awareness month through interactive tutor time and whole school assemblies.

Please be aware that Year 8 Parents Evening is coming up on Thursday the 21st November - this is an in-person event from 3:30-7:00pm. Appointment bookings will be done via Edulink and have been open from Friday the 8th November at 7:00pm and will close on Wednesday the 20th November at 12:00pm.

We encourage all parents/carers to attend with their children as this is an important opportunity to discuss your child's attitude, attainment and progress in different subject areas in person with their teachers. We understand that not all parents/carers will be able to secure appointments with all of the teachers they would like to see so we strongly encourage parents and carers to contact teachers individually if this is the case and book in a short phone call with them or some feedback via email regarding your child's progress. Please see the staff contact page on our website here.

Please can Year 8 ensure that they are fully prepared for learning with the equipment they need for lessons and that they always have a reading book with them for DEAR time. We ask that Year 8 students bring their Chromebooks on Mondays and Thursdays to complete E-WSPD and Bedrock in tutor time.

I would like to remind you of our Year 8 Tutor Team who are your first point of contact if you have any questions or concerns:

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net

Message from Mr Ryan Year 10 News

It is hard to believe how quickly the time has flown and the first round of PPEs are about to be sat. This really is a good sign that within a year, the year group will be sitting their first round of exams. Now is the perfect time to start revising, if you are wondering how to encourage your child to revise, you can't beat asking them to create either a Buzan Mind Map or cue cards on a particular topic. If your child says they don't know what particular topic to study, ask to see their PLC. This is a personal

learning checklist which should detail all the topics that have been covered and that are going to be covered. If they start to revise now, they really will do incredibly well in their GCSEs.

I do have to speak about attendance and uniform. In relation to attendance we are aiming for everyone in the year group to have attendance above 92% - I know that it seems that 80% is good but this actually equates to a day off a week. Uniform in the year group is really good and I am always proud of the year group when we have line-up on Mondays. One thing that has come to light is how tall the year group are getting and therefore uniform just isn't fitting right anymore. We are aware that uniform is expensive and I would like to point out that if there are any issues we will happily try to help if we can.

We launched our sign-up sheet for students to represent: their form, house and year group. I am so pleased with the quality of candidates who have shown an interest in a position.

I would like to thank Danylo Liubchenko, who, at the drop of a hat, came with me and translated for me as I showed a new student from Ukraine around the school. Thank you.

Please remember to contact your child's form tutor in the first instance should there be any concerns.

Physics trip to Geneva, Half term October 2024

Our Year 13s had a fun-packed trip to Geneva! They toured the United Nations Palace, explored the botanical gardens, learnt about what goes on at CERN, had a traditional Swiss dinner with cheese fondue and live music, made cloud chambers showing the trails left by subatomic particles, climbed the highest church, explored the city some more, and took a boat across Lake Geneva… Wow, they never stopped moving! It was a brilliant trip with a truly wonderful group.

The Geneva trip was a great experience as we got to visit multiple attractions, for example a guided tour of CERN and the UN and plenty of free time to walk around and explore the city ourselves. Aside from the educational aspects of the trip, we also went on a cruise on lake geneva and ate at a traditional Swiss restaurant with live music. Overall, the trip was a huge success and I am very glad that we had the opportunity to go - Archie

CERN – Geneva

In October half-term, Mr Miah and Ms Neacsa took 20 Year13 Science and Humanities students to Geneva.

It was a busy 3 days visiting the following incredible locations:

- Jardin Botanique Genève

- UN Palace of Nations

- History of Science Museum

- CERN Guided Tour

- CERN Science Workshop

- Geneva's Waterfront

- Geneva's Old Quarter

- Cruise of Lake Geneva

I recently went on a three-day trip to CERN in Switzerland, and it was a great experience. The trip had some amazing views of the surrounding scenery, my favourite being the cruise on Lake Geneva, which made the trip even better as it was so peaceful and the view was incredible. We also visited the botanical gardens, which were a lovely and relaxing experience. Visiting CERN itself was fascinating, as we learnt so much about the research behind particle physics and how much effort is being put into proving the standard model of particle physics. I asked our tour guide how many years it has taken and he said a bit over 20 years! We also did a hands-on experiment building a cloud chamber. Overall, the trip was both educational and a memorable experience. Laiba Batool Bokhar, 13Q

The trip to CERN in Geneva was a wonderful insight into different areas of science, they had many interactive activities that were a lot of fun and required teamwork from me and my friends. We also visited the UN and got to listen in on a meeting which helped me understand the workings behind the organisation. We explored the area and found many beautiful sights. It was an overall amazing experience that gave me a new perspective on science. Ema Ziliute, 13Q

On Friday 25th October, 40 Roding students, along with 4 teachers, set off very early to fly to Barcelona for our four-day residential visit. During the trip we visited all of the fantastic sights that Barcelona has to offer. We also did a lot of walking! Full credit to the students who did not complain about how much we walked - I am sure they enjoyed the opportunity to see so much of the city. After a very full 4 days (and quite a bit of rain) we returned to the school very late on the Monday. The students were tired but happy, having enjoyed their visit very much and having created lots of fantastic memories.

The Hospitality and Catering students visited Westminster Kingsway College on Monday the 4th November, the students had an immersive experience at this event. They listened to a presentation from the course manager and did catering-related activities such as cake decorating, exotic fruit tasting, bread shaping, making chocolate decorations, food presenting using edible flowers and watched a chef making Crepe Suzettes, showcasing the gueridon food service. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

On Wednesday 6th November, 92 year 7 students went to the west end to watch Matilda the musical. Anna Deikalo, who played Matilda, put on a phenomenal performance for us, in the interval I could hear students saying how amazing she is to remember her lines, choreography, costumes, and the amount of props used. The students were a joy to take to the west end. It was a quick journey there and a long journey back but students showed resilience and patience. The Cambridge theatre where it was held had 11 other schools attending so the theatre was fully booked as well as the general public. Students loved serving snacks like popcorn, sweets, chocolates and ice cream at the interval. Massive thank you to parents of these 92 students who were patient as we didn't get back till 7pm. As well as a massive thank you to Miss Burke, Ms Thompson, Mr Wilson, Mr Lu, Ms Ashwood, Ms Rahman & Mr Muqtadir who supported me on the trip and created lots of fantastic memories – Miss Joseph

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to alk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites

The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
