What a busy term to the end we have had here at RVHS! I have been very much enjoying seeing all of the wonderful photographs of the enrichment and festive experiences that have been organised for our students. From festive cake decorations, pantomimes to the Winter concert; it’s all been very exciting at school. On that note, I would like to say a special thank you to members of the school community that have given up their time to support such events and for parents/carers for encouraging their children to get involved. As our community knows, we did have a difficult start to the term. The RAAC crisis saw us lose 18 classrooms, a canteen, independent study area, toilets and staff workspaces. Ensuring that all students were back on site and learning was the key priority; which we successfully managed to achieve by the end of the half term. I wanted to give you an update on the status of our building work, as I know that many parents and carers are understandably keen to have some more information. We are currently awaiting an update from the Department for Education regarding planned next steps for our affected building and have recently been advised that schools will receive notification of this once a decision for every school known to be affected by RAAC has been made. Alongside this, we continue to prioritise plans to construct a temporary kitchen and canteen facility on our school site, so that we can increase our catering provision; something that we know is really important to our community. Looking to the new year, I wanted to remind parents/carers of a few really important items to ensure that we have a smooth and successful start to 2024:

Monday 8th January 2023 - First day back in school for ALL students. Students must arrive by 8.30am. Any student that arrives after 8.30am will need to report to the Alderton Hill Road gate as ‘late’. All students that arrive late, will sit a detention at lunchtime. Please support the school with our increased focus on punctuality by ensuring that your child has enough time to travel to school each day. Uniform - We will continue with our whole school uniform checks every Monday and our academic mentors will continue to check during period 1 each day. To ensure that we maintain our high standards, please ensure that you have re-read our uniform policy. We noticed that a higher volume of students were coming to school in trainers and are having to borrow school shoes from us. Please speak with your child in advance of January and ensure that they attend school in full uniform. Equipment - You will have received an equipment list letter from Ms Wills (Associate Assistant Head Teacher) and Misss Reed (Associate Assistant Head Teacher). Please familiarise yourself with it by clicking here.
If you are a parent/carer of a Year 11 student, then you will have also received an important letter from our progress team, which outlines how your child is progressing during this crucial year, alongside key dates for your diary. Please click here to see it. All Year 13 parents/carers will be receiving similar communication in January. Lastly, I wanted to take this opportunity to wish everyone in the Roding Valley High School community a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Best wishes Mr D Charlton Headteacher
A Message from the Governors A Term of Contrasts We were delighted with the GCSE and A level results. Our congratulations to our students, staff and, of course, we thank our parents and carer’s for their support which is invaluable. As governors, we are delighted with the success of our Media, Drama, and Music students who in recent years have appeared on Strictly, I’m a Celebrity, TOWIE, Love Island and more besides – leading roles in London’s West End: Motown Story, Back to the Future and Hamilton; a starring role in the Emily Bronte movie. We congratulate them and the staff who taught them so well. The efforts of the CEO, Headteacher, Senior Leadership Team and site staff have ensured that 18 temporary classrooms and a toilet block have been erected in just six weeks. We also thank all staff and the excellent behaviour of our students in ensuring a smooth transition with all of them now back in school. Governors have continued with their monitoring visits to Maths, Food & Nutrition and P.E., SEND and IT. We have also made regular visits in relation to safeguarding and attendance. We have met three times this term and will continue with our work in oversight and strategic roles. We continue to offer support to the PTA which does such good work for all students. Volunteers are always welcome so do not hesitate to contact Paul Wershof on pwershof@rodingvalley.net for further information. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a very happy new year. Best wishes Frank Solarz Chair of Governors

Year 7 News Message from Ms Hegerty We have made it to the end of our first term in Year 7 - well done to you all! It is no mean feat beginning secondary school, particularly with the disruption we have had owing to the temporary RAAC replacement buildings being built. I would like to congratulate Year 7 for their resilience during this first term at RVHS as it has not been a completely normal start to secondary school. Despite this, Year 7 have made great progress academically and I am delighted to see the confidence gained and personal growth made by so many of the students in our year group. Year 7 have a good reputation across the school for their behaviour and attitude to learning in lessons and it has been a pleasure to teach many of you myself. On Wednesday 20th December we had our Christmas Celebration Assembly where students were recognised for their achievements across all curriculum subjects, Bedrock, ARE points, recognition from Academic Mentors as well as two very special awards from Mr Charlton and myself. Please see the link below to this assembly:

Year 8 News Message from Miss Reed We have made it to the end of our first term in Year 8 and would like to say a huge well done to all students. They have dealt with the disruption we had at the beginning of the term regarding RAAC and have adapted immensely with the replacement buildings. Year 8 students continue to grow in confidence as the progress through the year. I had the pleasure of attending the Mrs Doubtfire trip with the English Department last week which was fantastic. The students were a credit to themselves and I am confident they all thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
.
We have had lots of exciting events happening over the past week including the Christmas Concert and the Pantomime. Hopefully some parents had the pleasure to come and watch either of those with some Year 8 students being part of both of those excellent events. January Exams The week commencing 15th January Year 8 will have their exam week. Students will be made aware of the content that will be covered in those exams and will hopefully spend some time revising carefully for these. Celebrations On Tuesday we held our end of year celebration assembly where we presented lots of certificates to our students for their hard work and progress over the past term. Below is a snippet of students who have won some great awards.

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net
Year 10 News Message from Mrs Patel & Miss Aston Well done for completing what has been a long and busy term. 6 Form News Message from Mrs Curling UCAS Success We would like to congratulate the 43 students who have now submitted their UCAS applications. Of these, 7 have been invited for an interview at either Oxford or Cambridge. In addition, we have students with interviews at Edinburgh and Plymouth for Medicine and Imperial for Environmental Science. We wish them every success with this. Please encourage your child to book their UCAS appointments as soon as possible. Our deadline for submission was 15th December. University admissions teams will be inundated in January, so there is a real first-mover advantage - last week we had a student receive all 5 offers within a week of sending off his application. Working hard is important, but so is a sense of balance. If you are concerned about your child feeling overwhelmed, or not coping well with the pressure of exams, please do get in touch with one of us. There are also some excellent resources for parents on how best to support your child on the NHS website, and from Young Minds. Food bank donations The food bank donations were a great success, we delivered half the load to Epping Forest Foodbank and 3Food4U collected the other half on Wednesday 6th December 2023. Another successful winter term here at Roding Valley with lots of fundraisers, donations, competitions and bringing on the Christmas spirit. We had our first Whole School Christmas Jumper Day and it was great to see so many pupils and members of staff wearing their jumpers! The atmosphere at the gate was great and thank you to everyone who managed to contribute towards the donations and make a difference to those children in need. We managed to raise a total of £477.19!
Artist of the Month for November goes to Meadow Dalton in Year 7! Her still life drawing shows incredible depth and tone. The level of skill in all of her art work has been consistently high and we look forward to seeing Meadow continue to flourish. House points for Rendell!
Thank you to Miss Barclay for running a food competition over in T1 where pupils had a bake off making their own cupcakes and well done to Cara Joyce for coming first and securing Hawking the extra 50 points! You can see all the photos from this a little later in this bulletin. This is what the house Podium is now looking like after everything that has happened across this term! Rendell is still leading the race in first place and making the gap bigger and bigger between themselves and Churchill! Pankhurst are doing their very best to close that gap and there will be loads of new opportunities coming out in the new term! I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year!

The students of STEM club created Lava Lamps made out of empty bottles and some STEM magic. They poured some vegetable oil and baking soda in a plastic bottle, after which they carefully added some vinegar doused with a few drops of food colouring. Some also dropped in small pieces of an effervescent tablet (Alka Seltzer) to make the vinegar globules move faster. Students used base lights or mobile torches to light up their lava lamps.
It’s Christmas season and students of STEM club immersed themselves completely in the festivities. They made Christmas trees out of wooden skewers and tinsel, using chemistry beakers as their bases. They also made plans to add LED lights and baubles in our next session on 19th of December 2023, which is also the last session of the term.
Careers We have had a very busy term in the careers department. Students have benefited from many employer talks; PWC, Jess Hayden from The Times, Higgins Construction, BGC and OMD Media have all visited the sixth form study centre and delivered a presentation for students over the past term. Year 12 & 13 have all participated in workshops to learn interview techniques. This week 34 Year 12 & 13 students had the opportunity to visit Capgemini head office in London and participate in a programme that not only aided their Business/Economics curriculum but also gave them an insight into the company and the apprenticeship and graduate opportunities available. Year 11 students received a presentation from Harlow College to inform them of the courses available at Post 16 and Years 7-10 have participated in the new Ponder careers programme. Careers meetings are ongoing for Year 11 and 13. I would encourage all students in Year 11 to make sure they have completed college applications before the end of January – Mrs Mason, Careers Coordinator
The Winter Concert was held on 5th December. It was a great success and seen by an audience of 180. The music was an eclectic mix of rock, pop and classical. The students had worked really hard since September to ensure that the performances were of such a high standard.
Highlights included A Day in The Life by The Beatles and Gabriel’s Oboe by Morricone. The feedback from those who watched it has been extremely positive and complimentary. Congratulations to all the students who performed.
T1 was buzzing with creativity as students from year 7 to 9 competed for the winning place. The judges had a great difficulty choosing the winners as the standard was so high. The winners were… Cara Joyce

1
Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.
2
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
3
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
4
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
5
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
6
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to. Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
