Dear Parents/ Carers
0pts 2nd 1050pts
What a busy start we have had to 2024! I trust that you all had a fantastic Christmas with your loved ones and that your children have come back to school with a fresh outlook for this year. This week, our Year 7 cohort did their first set of examinations since joining us in September. They behaved brilliantly and took them very seriously. These examinations will provide us with a comprehensive understanding of the progress that your child has made and reports will be shared with parents.

Our Year 8s will be going through the same process next week - please click here to see the letter that contains the exam timetable. Your child will need to line up on the main playground at 8:30am to be registered and escorted to the exams venue. We wish them every success and cannot wait to see how wonderfully they do. On Thursday 18th January, we also welcomed many Year 9 parents/carers/students onto our school site for our Year 9 parents evening. It was wonderful to hear so many buzzing conversations and see how enthusiastic our students are about their upcoming ‘options’ process. Please click here to see the recent communication regarding this exciting time for Year 9. A gentle reminder that Options evening for all parents/carers/students in Year 9 is on Thursday 8th February from 5:30pm. I also want to mention what a positive end to the week we have had at RVHS. This morning, members of the progress and senior leadership team led bespoke assemblies for our Year 11 cohort to motivate and inspire them on the run up to the second round of their PPEs. I personally very much enjoyed speaking to a small group of students, in detail, about their progress journey & as a team, we are doing all that we can to ensure that our students fulfil their potential.
Parents of Year 11 & 13 students should also be reminded that we are running a supportive & informative revision workshop on Thursday 25th from 5.30pm. Please do join us - it will be extremely beneficial at this crucial time. Click here for more information. Lastly, I would like to talk once again about the attendance and punctuality of students to Roding Valley but also briefly outline the national picture. Attendance continues to remain a priority for secondary schools across the country. Regional and national statistics show a worrying trend of regression towards a ‘new norm’ hovering around 91% attendance (this is compared to a pre-covid national average of 96.5%). Despite new and innovative strategies being implemented by schools to try and improve this number, attendance figures continue to dip nationally. Strategies that previously helped improve attendance are now at best slowing down the decreasing attendance figures. You may have seen in social media in recent days, an increasing number of communications sent by Headteachers to their communities pleading for the support of parents and carers in improving their children’s attendance. Particularly concerning, is the decrease in the attendance of year 11 students across the country. There is a clear link between attendance and outcomes at GCSE- please see the table below.
Despite this alarming data, attendance rates have failed to improve. For parents of students with poor attendance in any year group, but particularly those in years 11 and 13, this is an urgent situation which needs to be rectified without delay. If you are struggling with your child then please speak with their Year Progress Leader who will ensure that you receive help. Thank you, as always, for your continued support. This term is going to be a very busy, but productive one. We look forward to seeing our students flourish during this busy time. Best wishes Mr D Charlton Headteacher

Year 7 News Message from Ms Hegerty Welcome back to Year 7 for their second term at RVHS - I hope you and your families enjoyed some quality time together over the festive season and are raring to go in 2024! We were straight back to work with our Year 7 Exams (beginning on Tuesday 16th January) in which students were assessed in core subjects to attain their progress since joining us at RVHS. Students will receive in class feedback and ‘Close The Gap’ lessons once these assessments are completed. We look forward to seeing how much progress Year 7 have made across a variety of subjects in the few short months they have been with us! Can I take this opportunity to remind students, parents and carers that RVHS uniform expectations must be adhered to and students will only be given uniform cards for missing items (i.e. shoes) in exceptional circumstances. Please also wrap up warm in this cold weather and be careful when travelling to and from school in icy conditions! We still are limited with the catering facilities we have available at RVHS so we do encourage all students that are able to, to bring a packed lunch to avoid lengthy queues at break and lunchtimes (Year 7 are still able to purchase food in Zone 3 at these times). Please further on in this bulletin the updated PE extra-curricular timetable for this half term - lots of sport to get involved with to get the blood pumping throughout these cold winter months! I would like to take this opportunity to the following students i who received the highest amount of ARE points last week - well done and thank you for being such great examples for your peers!

Year 9 News Message from Mr Ryan Welcome back to Year 9. I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and New Year. It is really good to see the students back, refreshed and ready for a new term. Over the past two weeks the year group have been receiving their results from their recent exams. You should all have received their reports on Monday. Yesterday, Thursday 18th January was Parents' Evening. It was lovely to see some really productive conversations happening about how students can progress towards their target grades. If you were unable to attend, or make appointments with your child's teachers, please contact them directly. Following on from this week, we have options evening on Thursday 8th February. This will be another perfect opportunity to speak to staff about the best way to support your child and help them to make the right choices for their options. This meeting also has all the information you will need about what subjects are on offer and the different pathways we provide. A letter regarding the Options timeline of events was sent to parents earlier this week, you can also find a copy of this letter here. As always, I would like to emphasise the importance of students completing their home learning as well as Bedrock and Sparx maths. Congratulations to Alexander Belnikof and Alex Diaconescu for their hard work over the holidays. In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to finance@rodingvalley.net
Year 10 News Message from Mrs Wills I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy New Year. I trust that the break was restful and filled with time with family and friends. It is a pleasure to be back working directly with the Year 10’s. Miss Aston and Mrs Patel have worked incredibly hard with the students and it has been great to see so many flourishing. I have had numerous staff come to see me to say what a lovely cohort they are and how much they enjoy teaching them. I do hope this continues as we continue throughout the year and develop their skills for their GCSE’s. I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support in our drive with uniform. The students are looking smart and in particular wearing correct footwear. A reminder that all shoes should be plain black (no trainers and no logos). If there is a problem then please e-mail the Academic Mentor or myself. This week 30 students attend the World of Work Conference at the Marriott Hotel, looking at their future careers. All returned very positive about the day and encouraged about the next steps after education, you can see a full write up further on in this bulletin.

Year 11 News Message from Miss Pinches A very warm welcome back to Year 11 after what I hope was a restful Christmas break. We are right back into the thick of it this term, working our way towards the next round of PPE’s in February. Last Friday we had our first assembly for term and I wanted to echo some key points to parents. A very warm welcome back to Year 11 after what I hope was a restful Christmas break. We are right back into the thick of it this term, working our way towards the next round of PPE’s in February. Last Friday we had our first assembly for term and I wanted to echo some key points to parents. I firstly want to reiterate the importance of attendance and punctuality, especially at this time of year. There is a clear link between student progress and their attendance to school. We really need parent support her to ensure students are getting into school on time and EVERYDAY! You can see on the graph below how large of an impact any non-attendance can have on progress and students confidence going into their GCSE’s. There has been lots of communication to Year 11 parents over the last few weeks so I just wanted to draw your attention to some key letters. A reminder that all communication is sent through edulink, under the ‘documents’ tab: 1. Parent Report Y11 Aut2 2023-2024- this is the most up to date data report for your child based off the November PPE’s. If you are filling out college or sixth-form applications, this is where to start. 2. Letter Y11 Progress- this letter explains how your child is progressing through the year. It also has vital information regarding support and events in place this term. In addition to key information regarding ‘Passport to Prom’, our new initiative for Year 11. 3. Y11 Intervention & Support Spr1 22- this details all interventions your child is required to attend this halfterm, in addition to those optional sessions on offer. I would also like to remind parents of our Academic Mentor and intervention team who are the first port of call for any questions!

6 Form News Message from Mrs Curling Happy new year from the sixth form team. We have been delighted to welcome back our sixth formers this week. University Success As you know, the final deadline for applications to University is 31st January. Students should submit their UCAS forms for us to check over and make their appointments with Ms Curling for submission, as soon as possible. We have had a number of successful offers so far. Seven students had their interviews for Oxbridge last month and will receive their letters at the end of the month, with a decision on offers. We have had two offers for Medicine, one offer for Imperial and also a student offered a place at Columbia University, a prestigious Ivy League School in the USA. Many of the 68 students have submitted to UCAS so far have been very pleased with their offers and it is a real highlight for the team when they share their good news with us. As you know, Mr Murray has been supporting students with their personal statements and commented before Christmas on how rewarding this has been. Wellbeing Working hard is important, but so is a sense of balance. If you are concerned about your child feeling overwhelmed, or not coping well with the pressure of exams, please do get in touch with one of us. There are also some excellent resources for parents on how best to support your child on the NHS website, and from Young Minds. On Friday, at Science and Medicine Society we challenged pupils by giving them molymods and a set of molecules for them to create. They all picked up how to structure molecules by reading the formulae really quickly; the simplest molecules we built were skatole, responsible for the smell of faeces and geraniol, a component in the smell of roses, which is very impressive as they are still pretty big molecules. Even the most complicated one we challenged them with, chlorophyll, was built. We had a lot of fun building our own molecules and guiding the students through their ones – Efe Kurtcebe 13U

On Wednesday 17th January some of our Year 10 students attended the World of Work Conference at the Marriott Hotel. Students learned new skills as well as having talks from various employers from different industries.
It was really useful I learned different things and learned more about myself and what I want to do when I finish school – Suzan Aldhaifi 10Ca
My favourite part of today was meeting new volunteers and gaining new skills, like learning how to educate myself using chatgpt and speaking to other people about their experiences – Ameria Thompson-Wells 10Ox
Today was fun, we went to the hotel and learned a lot of life skills about careers and it will be very useful in later life my favourite part was talking to the other people about my job in the future and their jobs – Amelia Stokes 10Ox
We thought that the conference was very inspiring and beneficial for our year group as we are coming close to leaving school and it gave us a real insight into the future and jobs we may like to do going forward in life. The experience was very memorable and will definitely help when leaving school as we met many different people in various job categories which gave us a real insight into future jobs and aspirations – Ruby Connors 10Ox & Kamile Stankeviciute 10Ar -
Year 10 GCSE Cinderella Panto Year 10 GCSE drama students got everyone into the festive spirit at the end of last term with their brilliant performance of Cinderella. The students worked hard to learn their script, along with choreographing both a ghost chase sequence and slapstick comedy routine, as well as writing lyrics for their own community songs. The talented cast put this together in a very impressive 6 week turnaround, as part of their GCSE drama course. Several of the roles were played by more than one student, to allow everyone to showcase their performance skills. Students performed a matinee of the show to over a hundred year 5 and 6 students from Alderton primary school, before then completing an evening performance to our own school community. Go #TeamDrama!
``Being in the pantomime was definitely fun but sometimes a bit stressful. I enjoyed reading and learning the script, then practicing it on the main stage. Additionally, I liked performing the show to the primary school audience who were really engaged." – Ellie Wakinshaw
"I think it was a fun experience and I really enjoyed it. It's a great opportunity to be on stage in front of a larger audience, and the show itself was something I really looked forward to. I would love to do it again” - Hannah Seres

1
Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.
2
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
3
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
4
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
5
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
6
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
