Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents/ Carers,

It’s been a long but productive term here at Roding Valley. I am sure that our whole school community is really looking forward to the two week break ahead.

As you may already know, our wonderful staff are running a selection of Easter revision sessions for our Year 11 & 13 cohort. I know that the schedule for these sessions has already been shared. If you would like to view this schedule, please click here.

On the subject of examinations, we also held two ‘mock results’ days for our Year 11 and 13 students. They had an assembly from the Year 11 Progress Leader, Mr Fletcher and the Director of Sixth Form, Ms Wheaton, then proceeded to open their results envelope. This was a great opportunity for our students to work out where they currently stand and what they need to focus their revision on. It was also a great opportunity for Mr Fletcher & Ms Wheaton to talk about next steps with their students. It’s a very exciting time for both cohorts.

I have also really enjoyed being part of the celebration assemblies this week, such a pleasure to see so many students collecting certificates in recognition of their efforts.

It’s also been a busy time in relation to trips and visits. Ms Edwards, Mr Price, Mr Melvin and Ms Fazakerely have taken a fantastic group of our students skiing in America. We also took a large group of our netballers to watch a Super League match last Sunday. I am always extremely grateful to any members of staff that give up their time to provide our students with such fantastic opportunities. I know that we have many more trips and visits planned for after the Easter break.

0pts 0pts 0pts 0pts 0pts
5th 510pts 3rd 650pts 2nd 680pts 1st 830pts 4th 550pts

Our Year 9s also got to experience a performance this week on ‘consequences of actions’. This was a really powerful experience for many of our students and raised awareness of how key decisions can have an impact on their futures. This performance forms an important part of our personal development curriculum.

Just a reminder to any parents/carers with children for whom we hold medication in school - please make sure you check that the medication we hold in school is still in date. You can contact Mrs Gladman (Office Manager) if you are unsure and want us to check for you. We do send reminders out to parents from time to time, but it is your responsibility to ensure that it is the current prescription and in date. If we have a medical protocol in place for your child, please always share any medical updates with us too.

I know that this was mentioned during the last parent bulletin, but I would like to bring this to the attention of parents and carers again. After the Easter break, my team will be having a big drive on uniform and school PE kit. As a school, we have worked really hard to ensure that our students look smart and ready to learn. We have continued to allow Year 7-10 students to wear their PE kit on the days they have PE as there was a strong feeling from the student voice that they were incredibly grateful for this privilege. Unfortunately however, there is a tiny minority of students that are spoiling this for others, by wearing PE kit on the wrong days, or not wearing their uniform or PE kit correctly. I am beginning to consider that the wearing of PE kit, especially when worn incorrectly, is having a detrimental impact on our student culture and readiness to learn in lessons. We will be reminding students in the first week back, during their assembly in period 1, of our very clear expectations and the potential consequences if they do not meet our expectations. If you would like to see a reminder of our uniform policy, then please click here.

I would also like to remind parents that students are expected on site by 8.25am. Period 1 starts at 8.30am. If you require any support with your child’s punctuality to school, please contact their Academic Mentor in the first instance. If your child arrives after 9.30am they are considered absent from school for the morning session.

Finally, I would like to thank my staff and you as parents and carers for your continued support. Wishing you all a very well deserved rest over the Easter period. Please take every opportunity to get some rest and spend time with the people who make you happiest.

Enjoy the rest of the bulletin, key messages and the school celebrations.

Year 7 News

Message from Miss Reed

As we approach the end of the spring term, it is crazy to think that Year 7 have now spent two terms with us and will soon be moving into Year 8. I always compliment them on how well they have settled in to Roding Valley High School and how proud I am of them and their achievements.

This week we held our end of term celebration assembly where we celebrated all the great things that Year 7 have done during the spring term. I would like to make a special mention to Karen Kaw who won the Year Progress Leader award for her consistent hard work and making excellent progress. The winner of the Headteachers award was Alex Glover for his general kindness to others, persistent hard work and his participation in the Sport Ability events.

After the Easter break, there will be lots of new extra-curricular clubs happening that it would be great for students to get involved in. Please keep a look out for this.

I would like to wish parents and students a lovely Easter Break and look forward to seeing everyone in the summer term.

Alex Glover Karen Kaw

Message from Mr Ryan LOST PROPERTY

It is hard to believe how quickly that term has gone by. It seems like only yesterday we had come back to snow and ice! Now the days are finally getting longer and we are about to head into the summer term. The summer term is fairly long with quite a few bank holidays in it so please take the opportunity to rest and recuperate over the Easter period

The Easter holiday is also a perfect opportunity to complete any of the outstanding pieces of homework that might need to be completed. Could I ask that you check your child's Google Classroom as they have quite few piece missing that you are not aware of as they are currently under 'missing'

The highlight of this half term has to be taking a group of Year 8 students to Manchester. It is always good to see the students out of a school environment as it gives you a different impression of the students. I look forward to hearing about any other trips that the students may be on.

I am also really proud of the boys who competed in the football match against King Harold earlier on in the week. I believe it was a complete massacre and that the boys are on their way to beating our next opponents!

The Easter holidays is a good opportunity to make sure that students have the correct uniform and equipment for the next term. I look forward to seeing everyone in the Summer Term!

Year 9 News

Message from Miss Fazakerley

As we have come to the end of the Spring Term we celebrate the successes of all our Year 9 students. In particular, these two students; Tudor for achieving the YPL award, for always making excellent progress within lessons, leading up to his GCSE's and always being polite and kind to members of the school community. The next student I wish to celebrate is Sapphire, this is because she is consistently positive attitude to learning, kindness to all and making excellent progress on the lead up to GCSE options. These are two amazing awards to achieve within their Roding Valley journey. Overall the celebration assembly was such a lovely easy to end the students KS3 journey with us.

Our summer term celebration assembly, our students will have been within their GCSE subjects for 8 weeks, making brilliant progress.

We have had amazing opportunities the past two weeks with lots of our Year 9 girls attending the netball at the Copperbox arena, spectating London Pulse go against the Celtic Dragons. It was a pleasure to go on this trip as the students made us so proud, representing the school beautifully.

As we go into the summer term, I want all the Year 9 students to work extremely hard, ready for them to settle into their options subjects, ready to take the leap and get stuck into the progress required at GCSE. I spoke to the students during their Celebration assembly regarding attendance. Within coursework based subjects if they miss 1 hour of lessons, it equates to missing 6 hours of work time and therefore will be far behind in their coursework.

As always if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact academic mentors or myself (jfazakerley@rodingvalley.net)

6th Form News

Celebration Assembly

Well done to all those sixth formers who received an award in Celebration Assembly this week. It’s been a long term and year 12 and 13 have been working really hard. Wishing you all a restful and relaxing Easter break.

Chelsea Education Programme at Cobham

On Monday the 27th March, Roding Valley’s Chelsea FC programme played in the Final of the Cobham Cup against Carshalton Boys college held at Cobham, the Chelsea FC training ground.

The squad was greeted by First team player and England International Rebun Loftus-Cheek, who wished the squad the best of luck prior to the game. In a closely fought game, Carshalton managed to score in the first period of extra time, which proved to be the only goal in the game, meaning victory for the opposition. However, Roding Valley goalkeeper JJ Johnson received player of the tournament and is awaiting a first team signed shirt.

Young Citizen of the Year

WINNER - Lili Warden – Lili is a Year 13 student here at Roding Valley High School – she is as "a great ambassador" for our school. She mentors younger students, runs extra-curricular clubs and leads on school productions. Lili also volunteers at several groups including the 3Food4U food bank, Buckhurst Hill Baptist Church and Music Theatre Essex, where she supports productions by sharing her technical theatre skills. Lili’s passion is technical theatre production, and she has found work experience at Tiffany Theatre College, Six the Musical, ITV Starstruck season 2, Much Ado About Nothing at Stratford East, as well as attending a Guildhall summer course specialising in lighting.

Bancroft University & Apprenticeship Fair

Attending the Bancroft University and Apprenticeship Fair was an incredibly enriching experience for me. I was able to gain a wealth of knowledge and insights from students studying and teachers representing many of the prominent universities in the UK. I had the opportunity to speak with representatives from well- known employers and companies about apprenticeship and degree courses, and gained a better understanding of my future options. I am grateful to our hardworking teachers and Roding Valley Sixth Form for organising this trip, and I now feel much more confident and at ease about my career prospects - Alfrid

I found the University fair trip interesting to discover what different universities provide and the wide range of courses they have to offer. The people were kind and offered plenty of guidance and assistance, they made it easy to engage in conversation and to ask a lot of questions, additionally it was enlightening to gather details from university students themselves and find out the potential opportunities such as a year to study abroad etc. and the requirements for each of these - Amelia

There was a vast range of different universities set up with their ambassadors, who of which we could engage with and ask as many questions as we pleased. This allowed us to find out what each university has to offer and begin to decide what universities may be suited to us in the future. We then had the opportunity to engage with large firms such as Ernst Young and Deloitte to find out more about their ethos, day to day employee life and apprenticeship schemes. We found out more about degree apprenticeships and whether they may be the suited route for us, if university isn’t something we’re as appealed to. This trip broadened our knowledge on the different options we have after sixth form and how we can begin to research and prepare to get a head start on deciding our next steps - Bronya

Sixth Form Employer Talks

We have had numerous employer talks in the sixth form over the past few weeks.

Deloitte, Department for Transport, Capgemini, Investment2020 and BGC have visited Roding Valley Sixth Form to share the careers and pathways into their companies.

We have welcomed back alumni students who applied to these companies whilst in the sixth form and are now employed with them. It is fantastic to see how well they have progressed via the apprenticeship and school leaver programmes.

Parents, if your company offers apprenticeships/graduate programmes and you would like to join us for an employer talk please get in touch with me Donna Mason via the email below, dmason@rodingvalley.net

Here is this week's Accelerated Reader update. As we approach the end of term, the competition across year 7 is heating up.

There is drama at the top of the table, with 7b/lLb2 storming into 1st place, building an 800,000 word lead over 7b/Lb1. Will the previous leaders be able to fight back to reclaim their place at the top of the tree? Or will 7b/Lb4 be able to close in on their two rivals as we move into the summer term?

In mid-table, 7a/Lb2 continue to hold on to 4th place, building a cushion of just over a million words ahead of 5th placed 7a/Lb1, who will be looking to respond with a strong word count boost over the Easter holidays. Meanwhile, 7a/Lb3 remain hot on their heels, only 200,00 adrift in 6th position.

Well done, as ever, to our top 5 readers, as well as those of you who have increased your personal word counts this week.

Top tip: use the Easter holidays to boost your reading. Whether you are on holiday or staying at home, you have plenty of time to read something new. Try to find some time every day, and enjoy!

On Wednesday 29th March, our fantastic student librarian team put together a Hunger Games House Competition Quiz to really test our knowledge and gain points for our houses. After battling through the multiple-choice questions, the picture round, the knowledge round and the bonus question, it was a very tense moment to see who our Victors would be...

Our top 3 quizzers were:

1) Sophie Blundy (Year 10) - 25/25!

2) Jessica Cooper (Year 7) - 13/25

3) Georgia Edwards (Year 7) - 11/25

The odds were definitely in your favour - a huge well done!

The points for the houses were as follows:

Churchill - 240

Murray - 20

Hawking - 10

Rendell - 70

Pankhurst - 10

A huge boost for each house - thank you all for participating!

Keep an eye out for our next House Competition in AR1!

Star Writer of the Week

Congratulations to Sonny Copus 10Ox for being nominated as the Star Writer by Miss Pinches for this piece of writing below:

Macbeth is a tragedy because way back in Act 1, Scene 2 Macbeth wasn’t a person but a hero. A warrior, a soldier and loyal to all, doing anything that is right, risking his life to protect all he cares for. But after the witches' prophecies he thought that he would become king and he fell. He was manipulated by his wife to do wrong and even though he was regretful, he grew to become the one thing he was against. Macbeth becomes greedy, arrogant, ruthless, violent, desperate, cruel, sadistic and murderous. He killed his best friend Banquo so his family wouldn’t get in his way and he starts to lose his sanity. Macbeth changed so much that the other Lords don’t trust and respect him and even turn on him with Macduff and Malcolm to defeat Macbeth. He also changed as a husband, not caring when Lady Macbeth died and in the end he got what he deserved. Macbeth is a tragedy because he’s a fallen hero who was once heroic but greed, arrogance and manipulation got in the way and oh how he fell… into hell.

Governors arranged a visit to the English faculty following the outstanding GCSE and A level results in Summer 2022.

Paul Wershof , Margaret James and Tony Barritt were welcomed by Louisa Routledge, Head of Faculty, and had an opportunity to meet with her colleagues and students in years 8,10 and 12.

It was a wonderful morning in school, and we are proud of their achievements. We wish them every success in their exams this year.

Here are our individual comments:

“I attended an engaging year 10 lesson on Macbeth. I was particularly impressed with the way the whole class were involved in a range of activities and the depth of discussion around the subject. Behaviour was impeccable and I was also pleased to witness the value of having a member of the SEND team supporting an individual student” – Tony Barritt

“I had the pleasure of visiting a Year 8 English class. The pupils were comparing texts written about King George V1 and Ed Sheeran and how they overcame their stammers. All the pupils were fully engaged in the lesson, contributing when asked, working individually and in pairs, guided throughout by the teacher. The vocabulary used by the pupils was very impressive. A very enjoyable and interesting experience” –

“An excellent visit to the English faculty to celebrate their exam successes in GCSE and A levels in Summer 2022. I saw a Y12 A level class who thoroughly enjoyed a poetry class responding to the prompting of their teacher and her use of resources. My thanks to all for making me welcome and I look forward to seeing their results” – Paul

Congratulations to the following Year 10 students:

Martius Elphus, Juanita Wilson, Lucie Marks, Xenia Tseka, Ashlee Bashoran, Aiyana Patel and Tomi Adigun.

They all performed their speech to Year 7 and Year 8 students brilliantly. Well done to Xenia and Tomi who are through to the regional final in May!

Chruchill are still storming their way at the top of the table so a massive well done to all the students that are part of that house, helping keep their first position!

Exciting opportunities on the horizon! Inter-house rounders competition is starting in the new term so please keep posting. There is an exciting opportunity for students with a passion for cooking to have a try at making an edible gift, maybe a late Easter gift, why not?

Another really exciting competition which will begin in the summer term is a RVHS Edition of The Chase where students have a chance to go head to head and beat the chaser, do they have the skills and knowledge to do so, we will see!

The leaderboard at the moment remains the same but I am sure with the opportunities coming next term this table could potentially start to look a little bit different. Is it time for Hawking to get out of last place, we will see...

Have a lovely half term and bring on the summer term for another round of competitions!

Medical and Dental Appointments

All non-urgent medical appointments should be made outside of school hours. However, when this is not possible please remember, your child can sign in and out around the appointment. There is no need for them to miss out on a whole day at school. This way, in some cases, it can mean a child will not miss out on a morning or afternoon session mark, meaning their attendance percentage will not be effected.

If you would like further information regarding attendance please see our Attendance Policy here

If you have any attendance concerns or queries please contact your child’s Year Progress

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1

2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites

The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

 11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/

 14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/

You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.

If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
