Chelsea Education Programme at Cobham
On Monday the 27th March, Roding Valley’s Chelsea FC programme played in the Final of the Cobham Cup against Carshalton Boys college held at Cobham, the Chelsea FC training ground.
The squad was greeted by First team player and England International Rebun Loftus-Cheek, who wished the squad the best of luck prior to the game. In a closely fought game, Carshalton managed to score in the first period of extra time, which proved to be the only goal in the game, meaning victory for the opposition. However, Roding Valley goalkeeper JJ Johnson received player of the tournament and is awaiting a first team signed shirt.

Bancroft University & Apprenticeship Fair
Attending the Bancroft University and Apprenticeship Fair was an incredibly enriching experience for me. I was able to gain a wealth of knowledge and insights from students studying and teachers representing many of the prominent universities in the UK. I had the opportunity to speak with representatives from well- known employers and companies about apprenticeship and degree courses, and gained a better understanding of my future options. I am grateful to our hardworking teachers and Roding Valley Sixth Form for organising this trip, and I now feel much more confident and at ease about my career prospects - Alfrid
I found the University fair trip interesting to discover what different universities provide and the wide range of courses they have to offer. The people were kind and offered plenty of guidance and assistance, they made it easy to engage in conversation and to ask a lot of questions, additionally it was enlightening to gather details from university students themselves and find out the potential opportunities such as a year to study abroad etc. and the requirements for each of these - Amelia
There was a vast range of different universities set up with their ambassadors, who of which we could engage with and ask as many questions as we pleased. This allowed us to find out what each university has to offer and begin to decide what universities may be suited to us in the future. We then had the opportunity to engage with large firms such as Ernst Young and Deloitte to find out more about their ethos, day to day employee life and apprenticeship schemes. We found out more about degree apprenticeships and whether they may be the suited route for us, if university isn’t something we’re as appealed to. This trip broadened our knowledge on the different options we have after sixth form and how we can begin to research and prepare to get a head start on deciding our next steps - Bronya
Sixth Form Employer Talks
We have had numerous employer talks in the sixth form over the past few weeks.
Deloitte, Department for Transport, Capgemini, Investment2020 and BGC have visited Roding Valley Sixth Form to share the careers and pathways into their companies.
We have welcomed back alumni students who applied to these companies whilst in the sixth form and are now employed with them. It is fantastic to see how well they have progressed via the apprenticeship and school leaver programmes.
Parents, if your company offers apprenticeships/graduate programmes and you would like to join us for an employer talk please get in touch with me Donna Mason via the email below, dmason@rodingvalley.net
Here is this week's Accelerated Reader update. As we approach the end of term, the competition across year 7 is heating up.
There is drama at the top of the table, with 7b/lLb2 storming into 1st place, building an 800,000 word lead over 7b/Lb1. Will the previous leaders be able to fight back to reclaim their place at the top of the tree? Or will 7b/Lb4 be able to close in on their two rivals as we move into the summer term?
In mid-table, 7a/Lb2 continue to hold on to 4th place, building a cushion of just over a million words ahead of 5th placed 7a/Lb1, who will be looking to respond with a strong word count boost over the Easter holidays. Meanwhile, 7a/Lb3 remain hot on their heels, only 200,00 adrift in 6th position.
Well done, as ever, to our top 5 readers, as well as those of you who have increased your personal word counts this week.
Top tip: use the Easter holidays to boost your reading. Whether you are on holiday or staying at home, you have plenty of time to read something new. Try to find some time every day, and enjoy!

On Wednesday 29th March, our fantastic student librarian team put together a Hunger Games House Competition Quiz to really test our knowledge and gain points for our houses. After battling through the multiple-choice questions, the picture round, the knowledge round and the bonus question, it was a very tense moment to see who our Victors would be...
Our top 3 quizzers were:
1) Sophie Blundy (Year 10) - 25/25!
2) Jessica Cooper (Year 7) - 13/25
3) Georgia Edwards (Year 7) - 11/25
The odds were definitely in your favour - a huge well done!
The points for the houses were as follows:
Churchill - 240
Murray - 20
Hawking - 10
Rendell - 70
Pankhurst - 10
A huge boost for each house - thank you all for participating!
Keep an eye out for our next House Competition in AR1!
Star Writer of the Week
Congratulations to Sonny Copus 10Ox for being nominated as the Star Writer by Miss Pinches for this piece of writing below:
Macbeth is a tragedy because way back in Act 1, Scene 2 Macbeth wasn’t a person but a hero. A warrior, a soldier and loyal to all, doing anything that is right, risking his life to protect all he cares for. But after the witches' prophecies he thought that he would become king and he fell. He was manipulated by his wife to do wrong and even though he was regretful, he grew to become the one thing he was against. Macbeth becomes greedy, arrogant, ruthless, violent, desperate, cruel, sadistic and murderous. He killed his best friend Banquo so his family wouldn’t get in his way and he starts to lose his sanity. Macbeth changed so much that the other Lords don’t trust and respect him and even turn on him with Macduff and Malcolm to defeat Macbeth. He also changed as a husband, not caring when Lady Macbeth died and in the end he got what he deserved. Macbeth is a tragedy because he’s a fallen hero who was once heroic but greed, arrogance and manipulation got in the way and oh how he fell… into hell.
Governors arranged a visit to the English faculty following the outstanding GCSE and A level results in Summer 2022.
Paul Wershof , Margaret James and Tony Barritt were welcomed by Louisa Routledge, Head of Faculty, and had an opportunity to meet with her colleagues and students in years 8,10 and 12.
It was a wonderful morning in school, and we are proud of their achievements. We wish them every success in their exams this year.
Here are our individual comments:
“I attended an engaging year 10 lesson on Macbeth. I was particularly impressed with the way the whole class were involved in a range of activities and the depth of discussion around the subject. Behaviour was impeccable and I was also pleased to witness the value of having a member of the SEND team supporting an individual student” – Tony Barritt
“I had the pleasure of visiting a Year 8 English class. The pupils were comparing texts written about King George V1 and Ed Sheeran and how they overcame their stammers. All the pupils were fully engaged in the lesson, contributing when asked, working individually and in pairs, guided throughout by the teacher. The vocabulary used by the pupils was very impressive. A very enjoyable and interesting experience” –
Margaret James
“An excellent visit to the English faculty to celebrate their exam successes in GCSE and A levels in Summer 2022. I saw a Y12 A level class who thoroughly enjoyed a poetry class responding to the prompting of their teacher and her use of resources. My thanks to all for making me welcome and I look forward to seeing their results” – Paul
Wershof
Congratulations to the following Year 10 students:
Martius Elphus, Juanita Wilson, Lucie Marks, Xenia Tseka, Ashlee Bashoran, Aiyana Patel and Tomi Adigun.
They all performed their speech to Year 7 and Year 8 students brilliantly. Well done to Xenia and Tomi who are through to the regional final in May!
Chruchill are still storming their way at the top of the table so a massive well done to all the students that are part of that house, helping keep their first position!
Exciting opportunities on the horizon! Inter-house rounders competition is starting in the new term so please keep posting. There is an exciting opportunity for students with a passion for cooking to have a try at making an edible gift, maybe a late Easter gift, why not?
Another really exciting competition which will begin in the summer term is a RVHS Edition of The Chase where students have a chance to go head to head and beat the chaser, do they have the skills and knowledge to do so, we will see!
The leaderboard at the moment remains the same but I am sure with the opportunities coming next term this table could potentially start to look a little bit different. Is it time for Hawking to get out of last place, we will see...
Have a lovely half term and bring on the summer term for another round of competitions!
Please click on the image to see our latest edition of RVHS Exposed This is a completely student led magazine, students edit, design, illustrate and photograph all content.

Medical and Dental Appointments
All non-urgent medical appointments should be made outside of school hours. However, when this is not possible please remember, your child can sign in and out around the appointment. There is no need for them to miss out on a whole day at school. This way, in some cases, it can mean a child will not miss out on a morning or afternoon session mark, meaning their attendance percentage will not be effected.
If you would like further information regarding attendance please see our Attendance Policy here
If you have any attendance concerns or queries please contact your child’s Year Progress
Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app. 1

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.
Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites
The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/

You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.
If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
