RVHS Bulletin Weekending Friday 11th February 2022 Dear Parents/Carers, 560pts

Thank you for your support this week as it has facilitated a very positive, safe and purposeful week here in school. Staff absence remains high, but I hope that the half-term break will act as a natural circuit breaker. Uniform is a very important part of our identity and standards, the majority of our students wear the immaculate uniform. Please can I remind you of our expectations and please use half term to replace any uniform, especially shoes, skirts (required to be worn at knee length) or school equipment. Can I reiterate that trainers can only be worn with a full PE kit on PE days. If you are experiencing any financial hardship, then please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Year Progress Leader. We also offer a selection of pre-loved uniform here at the school. You may have seen in the media that GCSE/ A’ Level examinations will be going ahead this summer and that there have been some adaptations made to the curriculums. We have today, written to all the parents in years 11 and 13, with additional information so please check your emails. The main changes are: • Coursework flexibility in some subjects • Generous grading to provide a safety net • Optional Content in some GCSEs • Support Materials - formulae sheets in some exams so students won't have to memorise so much • Advance information on the focus of some exams We will continue to prepare all students for these examinations and to ensure that they are best prepared, achieve their potential, which enables them to take their next steps. A reminder that all revision materials are available on our website. This week we launched our Year 9 Options microsite - please click here to access it. Please do take some time over half term to discuss with your child. The site contains lots of information on the subjects and GCSE pathways available. There is also information on who to contact if you still have queries. Alongside the options microsite, please remember that we have an excellent GCSE & A-Level microsite that serves as an excellent tool for your child’s revision over the half term break. All students know that they can access this via our school website, please click here to see the relevant Revision Resources page.

These microsites contain subject specific pages containing our PLCs (personalised learning checklists), e-copies of revision guides, reading lists, revision templates & much more. Following Miss Dyer’s safety message, we have had a number of parents and carers contact us to say their children have experienced being approached by strangers asking for their mobile phones and other belongings. Please do discuss safety plans with your children and ensure that they walk with friends where possible, stick to popular routes and go straight home. It is important that your children understand what they should do if something happens. We are in regular communication with the local policing team and they want to encourage parents and carers to report everything that happens in order to help them build a picture of what is going on in the local area. It also helps them to know where and when extra police officers may be needed. You can report an incident using the non-urgent online reporting system here. If you drop your child at school by car, please can I ask you to park with consideration for the residents of Brook Road and for the safety of the children crossing the road. Please do not stop on the zigzag lines, double park and/or leave your engine idling. We are continuing to offer students a varied and interesting Personal Development curriculum alongside their academic studies, the feedback from this has been extremely positive. Over the last half term students in Years 7 - 11 have been completing Personal Development sessions on Dreams and Goals. They have covered strands such as making responsible choices, planning for goals, coping strategies, money and earnings, mental health and illness, work-life balance, money and debt and future relationships. Year 12 and 13 have studied health and wellbeing, cholesterol, tooth decay, mental health, nature/ nurture, stress management and revision. After half term, our strands for years 7-11 will be Healthy Me, this includes aspects such as healthy choices on managing stress, substances, nutrition and exercise, medicines and immunisations, alcohol, life-saving skills, disease, treatments and lifestyle choices, hygiene, pressure and relationships. Year 12 will be looking at careers and Year 13 will be covering relationships and sex education. Our Personal Development curriculum covers statutory content and many additional aspects too and students will revisit various themes and topics throughout their seven year journey. We always encourage our students to get involved in the many activities available to them in school. Please take a look at the website to view the Extra-curricular timetable - you will see a huge range of different activities available to them across the week at lunchtime and after school. Can I please remind you that if your child is unable to attend school due to illness or any other reason, parents/carers must contact the school by no later than 9.30am each morning. Good attendance and punctuality to school is essential to support students in achieving their full potential. We will write to you if your child’s attendance falls below 96%, this letter will be to note our concern as 96% is our basic expectation. Less than 96% attendance means that your child has missed more than 8 full days of their education in an academic year. If it falls below 90%, they will have missed over 19 full days of learning, this means that your child will be considered a persistent absentee by the Local Authority. We want to work with parents and carers to establish good habits and routines that support good attendance and punctuality. We will not be authorising any holiday in term time. Please take a look at the attendance page on the website here for additional information on how to support your child. All students return to school on Monday 21st February at the normal time. Have a good half-term break. Sharon Jenner Headteacher

Year 7 The February half term break is always an interesting time at School. It marks the beginning of spring, when the weather begins to warm up and it also marks the halfway point of the academic year. It really is hard to believe that 6 months ago Year 7 were starting with us and were having to get used to the systems that we use at Roding Valley. Now, I can see how well they are doing, and it is lovely to hear how so many of them are enjoying their time with us. As I said this is the halfway mark and year 7 have had such a positive experience so far and will need to maintain the high standards that they have set for themselves for the next 5 months. Miss Larkin delivered an assembly this week on Digital safety and online lessons. I would like to take the opportunity to remind you that your child's work will be set on Google classroom at the start of the week. Any home learning will be set as an assignment. You can see what is due if you click on the 'my to do list'. Please be aware that a student can turn in work without attaching anything. If this has happened, then your child's teacher will probably send them an email asking them to submit the work. In relation to digital safety, could I ask that you check your son or daughter's phones regularly. Please check that you know who all their 'friends' are. make sure that their privacy settings are set to the maximum. Finally, we have Digital Week on the week starting the 21st February. The Year group completed their Exam Week, and you can expect to receive their Reports after half term. Please be aware that we will not be sharing grades with you. We will be able to tell you whether your son or daughter is on track but not what their 'raw scores' are. Should you have any concerns about the progress that your child is making we will then be holding parents' evening. This is a virtual evening on Edulink and you will receive more information about this after half term. Please take the opportunity to relax and enjoy your half term. It is a really good opportunity to recharge and reassess things. Maybe get your son or daughter to check their equipment, books and uniform so that they can be fully prepared for the 2nd half of Year 7!

Mr Ryan – Year 7 Progress Leader

Year 7 this half term were required to write a motivational speech as part of their unit on Transactional Writing. These three represent the amazing work produced by the Year group. • George Muggleton takes Churchill to the football pitch

Mr Ryan's stand out students this half term are:

Alfie Foley

Freiya Gumbrell

• Kris Karashtranov wants to save the world starting with Roding Valley • Charlotte Williamson thinks equality starts with us (and I couldn't agree more) Please do click on the images to view these fantastic videos.

Year 8 I cannot believe we are now at the halfway point of Year 8, 50% of the year is done. What a half term it has been! The students are growing to be such wonderful individuals, consistently making the Roding Valley community proud. Mrs Jenner had the pleasure of teaching two groups of Year 8 students, who in her words were described as 'AMAZING!'. This was a lovely message to receive as they really were a wonderful reflection on Year 8. It has been so lovely discussing with the students their favourite thing since the start of January, in school. We had many students discussing the excitement of their PE lessons and the variety of sports they have participated in. Another was the inter house football competition that was completed during lunchtimes, with our excellent Sixth Formers. Some students spoke about the relief of exams finishing and feeling as though they have done well. Many students spoke about all of the Science practical’s they have completed during their lessons. A student specifically wanted to speak about how much fun Ms Stowe's Art lessons are. As always, the uptake from Year 8 in extracurricular activities across all faculties is incredible! We have such a plethora of options for students to participate in, it is NEVER too late to decide to start participating. Please ensure to ask academic mentors for a copy of the extracurricular timetable to see if there is anything new you could give a go. This half term has included a myriad of House competitions, we have had interhouse tournaments in PE, Inter house football tournaments at lunch times, English Pearl paragraph, Revision house competition, COP26, Step up to the NHS, Big bang and many more. I am excited to see the results of each of these and hopefully have lots of house points gained by Year 8's In Sport for the week, the Year 8 girls football team played in the quarterfinals against Harwich, please see results on the PE Twitter and Instagram @RodingvalleyPE. We have also had the pleasure of a professional rugby coach from Wanstead Rugby Club to coach our Year 8 students ready for the next Rugby Tournament. If this is something you want to get involved in please speak to Mr Jones and Mr Allen. The year 8 Basketball teams went to West Hatch to participate in a WESSA tournament and managed to achieve some excellent results! We have many students who have been identified as role models in the Roding Valley community and are attending a local primary schools cross-country event with Miss Aston to be Leaders, Marshalls and Hares as well as support the primary school runners, massive well done to those who got involved. Additionally, I had the pleasure of handing out 100% attendance certificates in assembly last Thursday, which led to 5 students at random to receive a queue jumper pass for the canteen, pasta and baguette bar! Please ensure we are keeping our attendance up to have the chance of winning one of these queue jumper passes! As usual we have our rolling PD programme which this term we have focussed on 'Dreams and Goals' entailed within this are essential life lessons that were very surprising for our Year 8 students. These included; Long Term Goals, What money can't buy, Online Safety, Money and Earnings and The Price of Life. Leading some of these sessions and upon discussions with the Roding Valley community some facts that were discussed in these sessions were rather eye opening. Year 8s have now completed their assessments and will be beginning to receive their results from their subject teachers. Please contact subject teachers if you have any questions in regard to these assessments. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions (jfazakerley@rodingvalley.net) Miss Fazakerley – Year 8 Progress Leader

Year 9 Another half term completed and officially halfway through Year 9. It has been another busy fortnight in Year 9 over the past two weeks with lots going on. Our Under 14 girls football team played in their Essex cup quarter final yesterday and what a show they put on. They defeated Harwich and Dovercourt High School 5-0 and are now through to the semi-finals. The team is made up of nine Year 9's, together with a handful of Year 7's and 8's. They sure did RVHS and Miss Aston proud. I wish them the best of luck for their next match. This week saw our Year 9's attend an Options assembly which was delivered by Mr Mammen. He explained the Options process in detail and answered any questions that our students had. They also had the opportunity to meet and hear from Mrs Mason, our Careers Advisor. She provided an insight into what and why they should pick subjects from a Post 16 and careers perspective. This together with the launch of our Virtual Options evening will now have provided both students and parents with the information needed to make informed decisions when selecting their GCSE options. I encourage all of our students to have discussions with their subject teachers, academic mentors and parents to ensure the correct decisions are made. It was lovely to see a group of our Year 9's enjoy a trip to the Natural History Museum last week. They had an excellent time and represented RVHS so wonderfully. A massive thank you to Miss Pinches for organising this opportunity for our students. We have a large number of students attending the Premier League experience to Manchester when we return after the half term break. This will be another wonderful opportunity for our students to take their learning outside of the classroom and experience new and exciting things with their friends. I encourage as many of you as possible to engage in all of these wonderful opportunities on offer to you. I wish you all a happy and restful break and I hope you can take some time to rest and unwind. As always, please don't hesitate to contact me should you have any queries at all relating to your child. Miss Edwards – Year 9 Progress Leader

Year 10 Year 10 has had a fantastic half term and I am really pleased with the mature and conscientious manner in which they have approached their studies since Christmas.

Children's Mental Health Week This week is Children's mental health week and students have been discussing this in tutor time and the following link has some useful information for students and parents alike.

Internet Safety I also thought parents may find the following link useful as the issue of internet safety has been highlighted this past week and is discussed often across all the curriculum in order to try and protect our students from the potential perils of the internet. Congratulations to all Year 10! I am really proud of the way you have performed this half term. Have a great half term!

Mr Fletcher – Year 10 Progress Leader

Year 11 On Tuesday evening Year 11 students came to 6th Form interviews conducted by the Leadership Team. It was clear that students had thought carefully about their Key Stage 5 studies and they took an active and positive role, conducting themselves maturely and appropriately. We all agreed it was a pleasure to be part of this. This week, it has been a pleasure to walk around and see year 11 so engrossed in lessons. I have seen students leading discussion, doing really well in learning checks and contributing to learning in a range of ways. Subject interventions have been well utilised and the general behaviour of Year 11 has been excellent, exactly what we would expect! Could I take this opportunity to encouraging access to Bedrock (literacy) this is a key method for improving language skills and will be hugely supportive to students. Year 11 have been busy preparing for the PPE's after half term. Students have been given timetables and should know that they need to bring a clear pencil case / pens should be black ink, only water is allowed (bottles should have no labels). Please note there are letters sent to you providing information on the upcoming weeks. I do hope that our students find time for rest and revision in a healthy and useful balance during the half term break.

At Roding Valley High School our staff strive to support our students, both inside and outside the classroom. After half term, we would like to invite the Roding Valley Community to nominate any member of staff that you feel are going above and beyond to support either your own or your child’s experience within our school via an online form that will be available on our school website. So for example; this could be a Teacher that supported you in class, a member of support staff that has been extremely helpful or colleague who has supported you at work. Nominations are welcome from the Roding Valley community, this could include; parents, students, staff or a member of the public. You can nominate ANY member of our staff, this includes teachers, admin staff, catering staff, IT staff, pastoral staff and site team staff, as we value every member of our school team and believe that everybody plays an important part in ensuring that our school is a safe and happy place for students to learn and grow. With your support we can work together to continue to be a supportive and positive environment, ensuring that the wellbeing of all our staff and students remain our highest priority. Miss Larkin was nominated because without a doubt she is the glue of our school, she drives Teaching & Learning effectively and compassionately, embracing technology and supporting staff development. Every teacher is directly impacted by Paige's excellent work and the school as a whole continues growing because of her positive and extensive influence. Miss Larkin has boundless energy and passion for teaching and learning. Accelerated Reader With Miss Woods

Book Review for ‘Assassin’ By Chris Ryan I loved this book and I’d say that it is even one of the best books I’ve read so far. It is a book about 6 special force cadets who temporarily go to Zermatt Academy (in Switzerland) and they have to make sure that a boy called Darius doesn’t get kidnaped or even worse, assassinated. Darius is the son of an Iranian scientist who escaped because he was under pressure by the Iranian government. 4 deadly assassins get sent to kidnap Darius where the 6 cadets and Darius have to run away from them and survive the harsh conditions of the Alpine winter. My rating is 5/5. Kimi Oliveira Da Costa, Year 7

1

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

2

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

3

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

4

5

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

6

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

7

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

8

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
