Message from the Headteacher I would like to welcome everyone back after what I hope was a restful mid-summer break and I hope that you have been enjoying the wonderful weather. This morning, I wrote to all parents of students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 to explain the adaptations to the timetable from next Monday now that Years 11 and 13 are no longer on-site in the normal way. These letters can also be viewed on the website Year 7 & 8 Letter, Year 9 Letter and Year 10 Letter. This week Year 12 have been sitting their end of Year Progression Exams and they continue into next week. We will write to all Year 12 parents regarding changes to the daily routine for them early next week.

3640pts

Today was our Sixth Form Transition Day and it was wonderful to welcome 180 of our own Year 11s as well as students from other schools onto the site to prepare for their transition into our sixth form. Later in this bulletin, there are some photos to highlight what the day included, they experienced A level taster lessons and various enrichment activities. It was also great to have Miss Wheaton back - our Director of Sixth Form who will be returning from maternity leave. Our current Head Boy/Girl, Raaj Singh and Florence New shared their 6th Form experiences with the potential Year 12s.

3606pts

As we have been experiencing much warmer weather, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that students should be attending school in full school uniform or if they have PE on a particular day. Students will be given the opportunity to remove their blazer, but they shouldn’t be wearing an alternative jacket or jumper in its place. On PE days, they should come into school wearing their Roding Valley PE kit - no other sports kit is allowed. Furthermore, students should be wearing black leather shoes and not trainers each day except for their PE day. Please do contact their Year Progress Leader if there is a reason they haven’t got their ‘proper’ school shoes on.

3468pts

Please can I ask that you continue to support the COVID testing and ensure that your child takes a lateral flow test every Sunday and Wednesday. Please immediately report any positive cases to the school covid@rodingvalley.net and follow up with a PCR test. As ever, please do enjoy browsing through the rest of this Bulletin, to see some of the fantastic activities that our students have been involved in.

Have a lovely weekend, Mrs Jenner – Head Teacher

Year 11 to 12 Induction Day Today our new Year 12 2021 intake students participated in their Sixth Form Induction Day. Students were able to experience taster sessions of some the classes they will be taking in September.

Junior Maths Challenge 2021 We have had a fantastic set of results in the Junior Maths Challenge sat by our Year 7 and 8 students. Of the 91 students who sat the Challenge, 50 were awarded a merit certificate; 11 Gold, 12 Silver and 27 Bronze. Our Best in School award goes to Cailan in Year 7 with a fantastic 102 points, only beating the Best in Y8 Enru by just 2 points! For the first time since I've been running these Challenges, we have students who qualify for the Junior Mathematical Olympiad round. Both Cailan and Enru will be taking part. We also have a further 9 students who scored more than 73 points which means they qualify for the Junior Kangaroo round. Well done to everyone who took part!

Coming Soon our New Art Exhibition Area Many thanks to our A Level Artists, who have spent their final lessons discussing ideas for how we could turn our rather unwelcoming little courtyard into a space more suitable for exhibiting large art work. They've cleared lots of ivy from beds and planted flowers in its place. They've also designed new planters and constructed a wind chime. Many thanks for starting this long term project!

Congratulations to all of the KS3 students that have written about ‘Missing’ this week. Thank you to Miss Woods for sharing their work with us and we hope you enjoy reading their creative work!

I was lucky He was on another cleaning shift. He had his had his mop, bucket of water and cloth in hand. He would clean the floor as he paced down the hallway. He had done this many times before, so when he noticed some peeling plaster on the roof, he concluded that there was a leak causing it to be damp and therefore peel. Nonetheless, he decided to check, and ripped of the plaster, which fell to the floor. He was horrified to find that the roof was a shade of red, and it was moving. Before he fully realized what was happening, a large hand with 3 fingers burst through the roof, pulling him and his equipment through the slimy roof. The roofs red colour faded, going back to its original form as a roof. Except for the ripped plaster, there was no evidence that he ever had even walked through that hallway.

That morning, I ended up in sheets of cold sweat drowning my body. Constantly, the question, ‘Where is it?’ lurked about me. I can't deny that I was worried. Frantically, I searched the house and a sense of urgency to find it overcame me. I could not and still cannot comprehend how I could have survived without it; this was important. I practically turned the house inside out, upside down, and stuck my head into every inch of the building. I almost lost hope, but there it was, hidden in plain sight in the cupboard, the stupendously scrumptious cereal. Martyn Leonard, Year 7 ...19...20. “Jenade...Jenade.. .JENADE!!” shouted Katie as she was looking in the kitchen for Jenade; room by room she was

Dante Kunstel, Year 7

It was lost down here, two hours since my prize fell down into the darkness. Treading through the murky waters without so much as a light to guide me, I searched. Determined to find it I staved off the hunger and various vermin living in the tunnels. I came to a sudden realization in that moment that I had no means to find a way out, no breadcrumb trail had been left and no magic string strewn in all the right places. But it didn’t matter as I leaned down to pick up my reward, I opened it up and glared at all the glowing cash hidden inside my briefcase. Alexander Montague-Patel, Year 10 Breathe. Breathe. Slowly, I wriggle further into the fabric of the sofa and nestle under the cushions. I’m safe, for now. Crumbs are jammed between my buttons and sweaty fingerprints stain numbers 7,0 and 1- my batteries tremble with fear. Muffled voices slowly get louder and louder. The gradual flipping of cushions comes closer. I wedge myself further beneath the sofa, and wait. Boom. Boom. Boom. “Alex, you had the remote last!” the creature yells. “I left it on the sofa! Someone must’ve picked it up!” Oh no. Stubby, clammy fingers seize me and I’m left helpless to another eternity of aggressive poking and prodding. Rosa Marshall, Year 9

searching for her. Jenade was nowhere to be seen… What was a normal hide and seek turned into a missing Jenade? She went to grab the phone, but it too was missing as well as all the phones in the house. Katie was petrified. Where is Jenade? Not only was Jenade and the phones missing, but her wallet and suitcase were missing too! Ding dong! She sprinted to the door to find Jenade there holding a bag. Katie was relieved to see Jenade, but she was puzzled. What about all the other missing things? What had happened to Jenade? Isabelle Davenport, Year 7

I was getting ready to leave the house when I noticed that something was missing. Panicstricken, I began to look for them. But even after looking through piles of disregarded papers, under desks, under the bed… they were nowhere to be seen. As I searched on, I began to lose hope. I’d lost count of how many times I had sought through my whole house. I didn’t know what to do – I could hardly live without them! Feeling utterly crushed, I put my head down in shame. Suddenly, I felt something fall down my forehead. There they were – my glasses! On my head the whole time! Ellie Wakinshaw, Year 7

I was out with a friend, we went into a certain shop and then…she disappeared. I looked everywhere, I tried phoning her and everything! She didn’t pick up. I can’t remember if I’d done something wrong to make her disappear so suddenly. So, I phoned her, and to my surprise someone answered, but it wasn’t her. It was her mum. "She hasn't come home..." I can’t even remember how long I’ve been searching around Westfield for her, what if she’s been kidnapped? Or, what if she ran away? Who knows…I should give up looking already, she’s nowhere to be found, maybe she’s heading home because I took too long, but I don’t think I did, I took the same amount of time I always do, and she normally takes longer than me? I tried phoning her again, no answer, I called her mother and told her to try phoning her. Her mother phoned me back with, “she ended the call on me, it went straight to voicemail.” Weird…she never ends the phone on her mother. She’s too much of a mummy’s girl to do that. I don't know if I could ever find her by myself. I know! I'll phone her uncle to find out where she is! "What? I haven't seen her in years." Weird, I swear Sally always talks about the game she and her uncle used to play... I'll go back to the shop and look. I'll look in all the closets and make sure she's not playing an uncalled for game of Hide-And-Seek.

Congratulations to the following students, who have been nominated as French Star Students this week:

      

Tomi Adigun Xenia Tseka

The first closet? No. Second? No. Third? No. Fourth? No. Fifth? No. Wait! SHE WAS BEHIND IT! Uncalled for Sally, uncalled for...I start screaming at her because of what she did and people started to stare at me like I was some crazy person. Sally started giggling at me "They can't see me." ...What?...Am I going crazy...I'm seeing a child that doesn't exist? That makes no sense! I'm not crazy... I'm leaving the shop, Sally's following me with a large grin sending a chill down my spine. If she doesn't exist, how do I have her mum's number and her uncle's number, how do I have HER number. I look back at her grinning at me, sending a chill down my spine, I look forwards towards the door and make a run for it. She disappears, but I'm not going to look for her...Never. Again. Eloise Roberts, Year 7

With Ms Preston Creativity for Wellbeing A survey by BBC Arts and UCL ‘... revealed that nothing beats taking part in live creative activities that involve face-to-face social interaction, for example: singing in a choir or taking part in a group painting class. However, virtual creative experiences can also help and seem to have some benefits but these are less strong and emotionally beneficial than experiences which include face-to-face interaction with others.

Researchers Identified Three Key Ways That Creativity Is Used:   

As a ‘distraction tool’ to avoid stress As a ‘contemplation tool’, creating the mental space to reassess problems and make plans And for ‘self-development’, building self-esteem and confidence.

Year 7 I hope everyone had a lovely restful half term and managed to get out and enjoy the sunshine. I can hardly believe that students are now entering their last half term of the year and will soon be moving into Year 8 in September! Parents should now have received the letter regarding Y7 assessments which are taking place from Monday 21st June - Wednesday 23rd June. It is extremely important that students take these exams seriously and perform to their full potential as this will give teachers a clear indication of the progress your son/daughter has made over the year. Ms Larkin and Mr Ibrahim delivered a fantastic assembly on revision strategies yesterday morning which students can use in preparation. Ms Larkin has also asked that students send over any examples of their revision material to aced@rodingvalley.net. A huge well done to Daniel Sack and Ahiyan Kabir who have already sent in some great examples. Finally, can I remind you of our expectations regarding uniform and equipment. Students should still be bringing in their blazer to school unless informed otherwise. They should also be carrying the correct equipment with them each day. Our extra-curricular programme is now in full flow; be sure to check out the PE timetable which has been displayed in this bulletin. Wishing everyone a lovely weekend and as always, please do not hesitate to get in contact if you have any queries.

Junior Maths Challenge Results A huge well done to Cailan Shah who has been awarded the 'Best in School' award with a fantastic 102 points and will go on to the Year 7 Junior Mathematical Olympiad round!

Year 8 Welcome back to the final half term of Year 8! I trust you all had a relaxing and enjoyable half term break and are enjoying this glorious sunshine. As we are starting to see some warmer weather, I would like to reinforce expectations around blazers. Blazers must be worn to and from school and at all times whilst moving about the school. Blazers can be removed when in class with permission from the teacher, and can also be removed at break times whilst on the playground, but they must still be with you at all times. It is expected that at the end of break, your blazer is put back on to line up and move back into your classroom. Please can you also ensure that your child is wearing white trainers socks or the . RVHS navy knee high socks with their PE kit and NOT black socks. I also want to reiterate my expectations around conduct on the playground. During these warmer days, students are getting tempted into spraying water around, on or at their friends or other students. There will be zero tolerance around this and anyone found to be partaking in this type of behaviour will be issued with a 60 minute YPL detention on a Friday afterschool. Yesterday, Ms Larkin and Mr Ibrahim delivered a fantastic study skills assembly which provided our students with some excellent tips and tricks to use whilst revising for our upcoming assessments. I would love to see all of our year 8's using some of these methods to create some useful revision material for each of their subjects. These assessments will take place on Wed 23rd June - Fri 25th June. These assessments will help determine which class group your child is best suited to, in preparation for the start of year 9. Recently, a large number of our year 8 students participated in the Junior Maths Challenge. I would like to congratulate all of those who were involved on their fantastic effort. I would like to give a special mention to the following students who scored highly in this challenge. Well done to the following students on this excellent achievement: Enru L, Lucja T, Archie S, Macie G, Rowan H, Amelia T, Anthony D, Anthony B, Louis W, Tylan S, Martis E and Jack T. I would also like to thank the Maths department for providing this enrichment experience for our students. As we head into this last half term, students need to continue to test themselves twice weekly with the lateral flow tests that are being provided by the school. This is to ensure all in our school community are kept as safe as possible. If you need extra tests, please do let me know and I can arrange this for you. Continue to enjoy this sun, but please do remember to keep safe and healthy. Miss Edwards – Year 8 Progress Leader

Year 10 It has been another successful school fortnight for Year 10. Students are well underway preparing for their examinations starting on the 28th. Teachers have been including revision techniques within their lessons and I am hoping year 10 students have all been engaging with the microsite and taking the opportunity to get ahead with some independent learning at home. If you did not get a chance to join myself and Miss Larkin for the Parents Forum, then please ensure you take some time to explore the very useful microsite that has been created specifically for Year 10 students. You will find useful templates, PLCs and links to websites which support the learning of students. You will also find on that site a copy of the presentation from the Parents Forum. Please click on this link to access. In addition to this week we have had our year 10 parents' evening, if you still have any questions please do reach out to our teaching staff who are always willing to support the Year 10 students.

Mr Warry – Year 10 Progress Leader

Year 11 This has been a rather odd week for me as we said goodbye to Year 11 on the last Friday before half term. Although they are not in school they are still supposed to engage with different activities and come in for assessments (should they need to) It has been lovely to see those students who have come in for their assessments. Today we held our Sixth Form Induction Day and I was fantastic seeing many of the Year group ready to engage on the next chapter of their lives. As well as the Induction Day there are also Sixth Form taster lessons coming up that will be dotted throughout the coming weeks. Please check your emails for any information relating to this. We will be inviting select students into school to complete a Careers Workshop and to focus on CV writing. Details of this are to follow. As I write this we are still waiting for the Government to say whether we can have mass gatherings inside and therefore a Prom. Should this not happen we will definitely be having a Leavers Day Assembly. Please also be aware that you should also have received the letter inviting you to purchase the Year 11 Photos. Lastly, a date for your diary:  Leavers Day, followed by Year 11 Prom: 22nd June (COVID depending) at 7pm to 11.30pm

Mr Ryan – Year 11 Progress Leader

Attention All Year 11 and 13 Students If the schools holds any medication for any Year 11 or Year 13 student, please can we ask that you call either email Mrs Gladman on sgldman@rodingvalley.net or call on 0208-508-1173 to arrange a suitable time for collection.

A reminder to parents and students of all Year groups. Please remember to check your Google Careers Classes weekly, you will find useful information as well as enrichment to participate in. Building your skills and researching your options will prepare you well for your future in education, work and life! If any Year 11s or Year 13s need support for apprenticeship applications, please get in touch. If any Year 11’s require support for college application, please email for an appointment. 1

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

2

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

3

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

4 5

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

6

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

7

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

8

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
