“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

RVHS Bulletin Weekending Friday 12th November 2021 0pts

Dear Parents / Carers, We are really enjoying the opportunities getting back to a more ‘normal’ pre-covid time brings. However, I must ask that you support the continued well-being of the school community by ensuring students take lateral flow tests every Wednesday and Sunday night. This is helping us to maintain a full school provision at this time. It has been wonderful to open the doors for our 6th Form Open Evening this week, and I am delighted that so many families came to visit the school. The evening was a huge success, with excellent feedback on the information provided for students by the subject specialists and Miss Wheaton, Director of Sixth Form, and the level of support offered. There was a significant external student interest and presence at the evening, validating our position as the ‘school of choice’. I wanted to share one particular parents’ tweet, ’5 years ago we were looking at secondary schools. Last night we attended the RV 6th Form Open Eve. I’m so glad we chose RVHS. The school has been brilliant. Looking forward to the next and final step on the learning pathway’. All the information regarding applying to our sixth form and the provision we offer can be found on our website. Photos are shared in this bulletin, but please can I encourage parents to follow the school on Twitter account @RodingValleyHS and our Instagram account @rodingvalleyhs for live updates regarding daily life at the school. Our Year 11 students are to be praised for their attitude, resilience and efforts in their ongoing PrePublic Exams (PPEs). Following a consultation, the Department for Education has set out its plans for how GCSEs and A Level exams will be run next year and what schools will be expected to do if the Covid pandemic meant they had to be cancelled for the third year in a row. More details will be provided, but the press release 11/11/21 can be read here: https://www.tes.com/news/gcses-and-levels-2022-how-exams-will-run-next-summer I am sorry, but I must also mention this current TikTok craze, which is sweeping the nation. Videos are being uploaded of teachers. If you have not heard of it, I have attached a press release from the TES. https://www.tes.com/news/government-steps-over-tiktok-teacher-abuse-videos-dfe I will take a very dim view of any of our students involving themselves in this activity or posting anything which is deemed offensive or discriminatory against our school or our staff.

This is not something that I would expect from our students, given the excellent relationships that exist in our school, but this craze is really taking hold in other local schools and across the county of Essex. Students are now returning to enrichment trips and visits, which is wonderful. This bulletin is full of celebrations and visits. I am also delighted that the Drama department is now able to put on a whole school production, High School Musical, at the end of March. The students are so excited, and it is great to have a mixed cast that goes across the age groups. Students gain many life skills from taking part in productions. Please do follow the Drama twitter @RodingDrama they are doing some great work! Please also contact them if you feel that your child would like to be involved. I would also recommend that you follow our excellent PE department on Twitter @Roding ValleyPE You can follow the outstanding achievements of our sporting teams and keep an eye on the extra-curricular provision on offer. We have made the decision to stop spectators at fixtures whilst we review the safeguarding measures needed to make this safe for all our community. Thank you for your understanding at this time. If there are opportunities to spectate, these will be shared by the PE department with plenty of notice. For now, please do not just turn up. On Thursday, the whole school came together for a Remembrance Assembly. It was a humbling experience when the entire school community joined in a 2-minute silence. I have an excellent opportunity to share with parents who would like to know more about how to protect their children from exploitation, specifically “County Lines.” We have recently devoted time to training all staff in school and are working with students to help them understand the dangers in different ways for different year groups. This opportunity has been endorsed by the local authority and is being delivered by the charity Barnardo’s alongside the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Parents Against Child Exploitation (Pace). The course aims to help parents and carers:      

Understand what child exploitation Understand what county lines are Understand the signs of child exploitation Learn how children are groomed online Understand the behaviours of exploited Learn how to approach a potentially exploited child

 Learn where to get support and further information To register for a place on this free course please follow the link here. Please do check you emails for the Parent Activation code for Bedrock Learning and for the letter from Mr Warry, as we will once again be supporting local Food Bank charities. This annual event and exciting house competition is so valuable for our local community. I hope you enjoy the weekend. Mrs Jenner - Headteacher

Year 7 Welcome back. I hope you had a lovely half term and made the most of the opportunity to spend time with your families and friends. Now that the students have settled into the routines at RVHS it is clear that they are going to do incredibly well. I do need to remind you that it is essential that they have a reading book for DEAR time and that they are fully equipped for all their lessons. It was lovely to see the student’s leaving food and nutrition this week with freshly made raspberry-crumble. All of these recipes can be found on the school website. As a Year group we are engaging in our school's personal development programme, this half term we are looking at: Differences, Discrimination and Challenging Stereotypes. The Year group have shown great maturity with their attitudes towards these Personal Development lessons, and I hope they continue to do so. I look forward to hearing the discussions that are raised during these sessions. If there are any topics that your son or daughter would like to discuss further, they can speak to our fantastic Academic Mentors. I am very proud of the students who are taking part in our extra-curricular clubs particularly the students on the year 7 Netball and Football teams. The next Netball fixture is on Monday against Epping St Johns. I thoroughly enjoy handing out certificates in our assembly on Monday mornings and can't wait to award those students with the highest ARE points and overall achievement. I also get to award those students who are doing particularly well in Bedrock. If there are any issues accessing Google Classroom, Edulink or Bedrock then please contact your child's Academic mentors, I have included their contact details below.

Year 8 Welcome back after what I hope was a restful and enjoyable half term. It is nice to see all of Year 8 settle back into the routines of Roding Valley so easily. It was lovely to speak to so many parents and carers last week for Year 8 parents evening. It allowed us to celebrate your successes in each subject and develop a greater understanding on how we can improve our progress even more. All teachers should have now been in contact if you were unable to engage with them during the Virtual Parents Evening. If anyone has not, please let me know so I can facilitate this communication. We have had some excellent results on the football field with Year 8's beating Shenfield School 4-1 in the National Cup and then beating Davenant in the Essex Cup on penalties 5-4 in sudden death after drawing the game 5-5. We have their next round in the National Cup against Woolwich Polytechnic next week. Come back with a win! Additionally, good luck to our Netball girls in the WESSA Cup against Epping St Johns. I am very proud when I enter our year groups Personal Development sessions. We have started our new stream of topics where we are currently Celebrating Our Differences. This entails; Prejudice and Discrimination, Inequality, When Things Go Right, Bullying and How can I make a difference. We will have the pleasure of welcoming an Anti-Bullying production called 'Hope' in the last week of term. During our weekly assemblies, I thoroughly enjoy giving the deserved students certificates to celebrate their successes that week and I am always looking for new nominations from members of staff. Keep up the good work Year 8! Miss Fazakerley – Year 8 Progress Leader

Year 9 I would like to start by welcoming everyone in our Year 9 community back to RVHS after an extended half term break. I trust all our students took this time to rest, relax and unwind after what was a busy but productive start to Year 9. It has been my absolute pleasure celebrating the hard work and achievement of all our Year 9 students over this past half term and I would like to extend my congratulations once more to all those students I recognised. I would however, like to mention a student who has made all of us at RVHS extremely proud. Amelie Andrews raised £611 for charity by learning the flags of 197 countries of the world. She filmed herself being tested on them all and did this in record time! What an absolute superstar. Please check out this amazing feat here. I and the rest of the team here at RVHS are extremely proud of Amelie and her wonderful achievement. What an inspiration! With our assessment period fast approaching, I hope all students are utilising their time effectively to fully prepare for these assessments. Miss Larkin and I will be delivering a study skills session next week to all in Year 9 to remind our students about all of the ways in which they can revise. This will be a really beneficial session that I hope all of our students engage well with. Assessments start on Monday 29th November and will conclude on Wednesday 1st December. Your child will receive an Exam Timetable with seat and venue details in the coming days. Reports based on these assessments will go home to all parents on Thursday 13th January, with Parents Evening on Thursday 20th January. Please mark these important dates in your diary. I would like to extend my congratulations to both our boys and girls football teams who have had hard fought victories in their most recent Essex Cup appearances. It has been so lovely to see so many of our students getting involved in this extra-curricular opportunity and representing RVHS with such pride and discipline. A special shout out to the goal scorers, starting with the girls; Deniz Yorulmax x3, Scarlett Lazarus x3 & Hannah Salmon and in the boy’s fixture, Brooklyn Byfield, Michael Luxton & Pedro Buburuzan. Well done to all students in both teams and best of luck for your next match. Do us proud! Yesterday we were able to share a moment together as a school to mark Remembrance Day. This was concluded with a 2-minute silence. It was so wonderful to see all students marking the occasion with such respect and appreciation for all those men and women who have served for this country and those of our Commonwealth. Have a safe and enjoyable fortnight; and as always, please get in touch should you need anything at all. Miss Edwards – Year 9 Progress Leader

Year 10 I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that Mr Dobson is unfortunately unable to be in school at this time. Due to his absence, I will be taking responsibility for our Year 10 students as their Year Progress Leader. As some of you may know I have worked with Roding Valley and with the Trust for many years now. I am looking forward to supporting all Year 10 students from now on and I am confident my experience as a Head of Faculty, Assistant Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher in other schools will stand me in good stead to help guide all our Year 10 students. Some students and parents’ may have already met me, as Head of Sixth Form, here at Roding Valley. Over the last 2 days I have been into all form groups to introduce myself to all students and set out my expectations moving forward. I have also been fortunate to have taught lots of students in Year 10 over the past couple of years and they have been exceptional so I am looking forward to having the opportunity to lead Year 10 at this crucial time. In the meantime, if you have any issues or concerns regarding the progress or welfare of your child please do not hesitate to contact me on mfletcher@rodingvalley.net Have a good weekend

Mr Fletcher – Year 10 Progress Leader

Year 11 I have to start by saying how enormously proud and pleased I am with the overall conduct and efforts of Year 11 students in their PPE exam period. Students have been calm, followed instructions, and behaved extremely well in what has been an intense time. The exams continue into next week, after which time the interventions on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and assembly on Friday will restart. Very well done to you all Year 11! It was lovely to see so many at the Sixth Form Open Evening who want to continue their journey at Roding Valley and if, after the talks and tours of subjects, you still have questions, please do contact a member of the Sixth Form team at sixthformoffice@rodingvalley.net or the Head of Department or Faculty – contact details are on the back page of this bulletin. Once the PPEs are completed then students will return to careers interviews with Mrs Mason our careers officer. You will receive an emailed copy of the outcomes of the meeting. On Thursday, we held a whole school Remembrance assembly and two-minute silence, where our school community again, showed impeccable behaviour and the utmost respect. Please click on the image to the left is you would like to watch our assembly. I would like to take a brief opportunity to congratulate the vast majority of the Year group on their uniform. Please note that students should not be wearing trainers and they should have their blazer, every day. If for some reason this is not the case, could I ask that you send me a note.

Ms Preston – Year 11 Progress Leader

It was a pleasure to be able to meet all that attended our Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday night. I am really looking forward to working with Year 11 over this coming year as we support them with the application process. We hope that the evening was informative and inspiring for students who hope to join us. If you have any specific questions about the application process and advice regarding subject choices please email sixthformoffice@rodingvalley.net and a member of the team will get back to you. Applications to Sixth Form need to be completed by 13th December and then we will begin interviewing students in the Spring term.

These next steps for year 11 might feel daunting, but we are here to support them every step of the way. They will make a great sixth form cohort and I look forward to welcoming them next September.

As part of our efforts to re-engage with our stunning local environment, I’ve recently taken my Year 10 Art class out to Epping Forest. We worked with a ‘not for profit’ organisation called ‘Tindersticks’, who led a session on discovering the fungi within the forest. We also met up with Patsy, a former student at Roding Valley, who led a session on drawing with acrylic colours. Thank you, Year 10’s, you were good company, even after we found the café to be closed. Mr Tisdale

Thursday saw the return of the whole school musical to RVHS! Almost two years since our production of Disney’s High School Musical Jnr had to be abandoned due to Covid, it’s back. Room CA1 was full of eager Wildcats, cheerleaders, jocks and geeks, as they sang, danced and acted in a ninetyminute workshop, led by our amazing Sixth Form production team. A cast list will be posted this week and tickets for the show will be available soon. Dates for the school production are Wed 30th March to Friday 1st April 2022. Go Wildcats!

Hello everyone, It's been a busy couple of weeks when it comes to Revision & Study Skills at RVHS!

Year 11 As you're all aware, our Year 11s have completed their PPEs (Pre-Public Examinations) over the last 2 weeks. They have been excellent during this process. Before half term, during our Parents Revision Forum, we launched our GCSE Revision & Study Skills microsite. This website contains all of the information, tools, templates & resources that you will need across all of our subject areas. Please click on the link below to access it: https://sites.google.com/rodingvalley.net/year-10-gcse-revision-study-la/home

Year 13 Our Year 13 PPE season is fast-approaching! Last week, Ms Wheaton and I led a session for all Year 13s in the Main Hall on Revision, Study and the importance of having an 'exam strategy'. We also launched the A-Level Revision & Study Skills microsite. This website contains all of the information, tools, templates & resources that you will need across all of our subject areas. Please click on the link below to access it: https://sites.google.com/rodingvalley.net/rvhsa-levelrevisionmicrosite/home If you would like to see the presentation that was shared with our students, then please visit the homepage of the website above and scroll down to view it.

Year 9 Our Year 9 exam season is fast-approaching and will begin on the 29th November. Ms Edwards and I will be revisiting all of the RVHS Tried and Tested Revision Techniques with our Year 9 cohort over the coming weeks. Subject leads have also been asked to signpost revision materials on Google Classroom and incorporate revision tasks into their Home Learning assignments. If you need support on any of our revision techniques, then please visit our website page below: https://rodingvalley.net/high-school/revisionresources/ As ever, thank you for your continuous support of our home learning & study programme at RVHS. If you have any questions relating to this, please email me on: plarkin@rodingvalley.net

The autumn term is always busy with lots going on. As we all gear up towards the exam season, things can feel challenging and confusing; we have aimed to make that journey a bit easier. The Year 12 and 13 Psychology Conference was a hit this year with Conferences on Placebo effects in Medicine, Psych in Covid-19, Health technology, Allyship, Young People and Wellbeing and more! It has been great to see how interested and hardworking our Psychology students have been. We look forward to the year ahead! Ms Garip

With Ms Preston

Entrusted to the City of London as Conservators by the Epping Forest Act of 1878, to maintain its natural aspect, the Forest was dedicated by Queen Victoria ‘for the enjoyment of my people for ever’. With Epping Forest on our doorstep, we have a huge expanse of woodland on our doorstep - it stretches from Forest Gate to Epping and within the forest are a number of walks and trails. At such a beautiful and colourful time of year (arguably the best) it’s well worth making the time to visit. Here is a link to six trails and some information about each of them; FORESTLINK Did you know…?     

 

Epping Forest is an area of woodland, on the border of Essex and Greater London. The area of woods, heath, rivers and bogs covers 2,476 hectares. As well as hiking and bird watching, horse riding and mountain biking are both popular in Epping Forest. Every September the Epping Forest Centenary Walk commemorates the saving of the forest as a public space. About 60 percent of the forest has been made a site of special scientific interest. The forest is home to deer, cattle, lizards, grass snakes and an estimated 10 species of bat. Epping Forest is well known for its huge, thick trees which are unique to the area. They were once pollarded but have since been allowed to grow. The trees have not been cut since the Epping Forest Act was passed at the end of the 19th century. During the 12th century Henry II declared Epping Forest to be a Royal Forest. Local people could graze animals although only the King was allowed to hunt in the forest. In 1543, Queen Elizabeth ‘s Hunting Lodge was built in the forest. The Royals would look for deer from the upper floors of the timber framed building and shoot them with crossbows.  There are 6 other historic buildings in the forest, including the Temple. An 18th century classically designed building built as a garden decoration.  The infamous highwayman Dick Turpin had a hideout in Epping Forest, which is today known as Turpin’s Cave.  Barnaby Rudge, a book by Charles Dickens, begins with a description of Epping Forest.  The City of London oversees the historic forest, even though it is about 20 km from the City. A force of special constables, known as the Epping Forest Keepers, has the task of managing the space

I’m off to play in the leaves!

1

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

2

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

3

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

4 5

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

6

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

7

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

8

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

 11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/  14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/ Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried. You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents. If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
