Dear Parents/Carers, Welcome to the first Parent Bulletin of 2022 - I wish everyone in the Roding Valley High School Community all the best for a happy and healthy year ahead. It has been a very positive and purposeful start to the new year here in school. Students have been brilliant and settled very quickly back into their learning routines.

Thank you for all your support with the onsite testing at the start of term, especially those parents who volunteered on site. It proved to be a very worthwhile exercise as a number of asymptomatic positive cases were identified. Please note that the current wearing of face coverings in classrooms is due to be reviewed by the government in line with their Plan B at the end of the month. Thank you for ensuring that students have a fresh face covering every day. 530pts
You may have read in the media that the self-isolation period is now being further reduced to 5 days. This is the latest guidance that we have received today from the Department of Education: From Monday 17 January, people who are self-isolating with COVID-19 will have the option to reduce their isolation period after 5 full days if they test negative with a lateral flow device (LFD) test on both day 5 and day 6 and they do not have a temperature. For example, if they test negative on the morning of day 5 and the morning of day 6, they can return to their education or childcare setting immediately on day 6. The first test must be taken no earlier than day 5 of the selfisolation period, and the second must be taken the following day. All test results should be reported to NHS Test and Trace. If the result of either of their tests is positive, they should continue to selfisolate until they get negative results from two LFD tests on consecutive days or until they have completed 10 full days of self-isolation, whichever is earliest. Anyone who is unable to take LFD tests or anyone who continues to have a temperature will need to complete the full 10-day period of self-isolation.

Our Year 7 and 8 cohorts are also very busy preparing for their exams- WB 24th January. Ms Fazakerly, Mr Ryan & Miss Larkin will be holding 3 workshops next week, for all students in those year groups, to ensure that they feel prepared & that they understand the RVHS revision techniques. Our subject leads have also put together 2 bespoke microsites for Year 7 and 8 to access subject specific revision guidance. The students will be walking through this microsite next week. It is also approaching Options time for our Year 9 Learners and the first step in this process will be for parents to attend the Parent Consultations on Thursday 25th January. These will be held remotely - click here for the letter. Please do read our Sixth Form Bulletin which is full of key information for students in the 6th Form or those considering this as a next step. Every year, we lead participation at the Careers Fest held at New City College, Borders Lane. Due to COVID this has now been moved to the new date of 24th March - put it in your diary - this is an event not to be missed especially for our students in Year 9 and above. In light of this date change, the Year 10 Parents Evening will be moved to another date and the new date will be confirmed with you next week. Positive COVID cases have plateaued in the school during this week; this is continued good news as we seek to keep the school operating as normally as possible. However, staff absence remains an ongoing issue but we do have contingency plans in place. This might mean that your child, whilst not ideal, will be taught virtually by their teachers or may experience a higher than usual number of lessons delivered by someone other than their usual teacher. I would ask for your continued understanding and patience at this time. Safety, adequate onsite supervision and your child’s continued education is my utmost priority.
Kindest regards Sharon Jenner
In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to Miss Hollis at ahollis@rodingvalley.net

Year 7 Happy New Year! I can't begin to tell you how pleased I was to see everyone back in school on Friday. I am always impressed with the way the year group conduct themselves and the way they behaved during the testing was phenomenal. As we are now well and truly in the season of coughs and colds it is now more important than ever to keep doing the lateral flow tests on Sundays and Wednesdays. If there is a positive result, please let the school know. The uniform in Year 7 is exemplary and I do just want to make it clear that your son or daughter should only wear their PE kits on the days that they have PE. If they have a club after school, they bring their kit in and change. As the playgrounds can be quite slippery it really is important that students don't wear studded footwear around the school. It should only be worn on the Astro. Speaking of the Astro, we have the benefit of being able to use this facility at lunch time. Children are allowed to have a 'kick about' on the pitches. I am currently asking that the students maintain the friendly behaviour on the pitch. I am also pushing our literacy schemes at Roding Valley. We currently use a system called Accelerated Reader where students are supposed to quiz every time they finish a reading book. Each time they pass a quiz it lets the teachers know how well they understood the book and the teacher can then advise them what to read next. Some students have not quizzed since we have been in school. You can help support us with this by having your child either read to you or by making sure that they quiz at home. We have the Year 7 Assessments coming up the week beginning the 24th January. On Friday we will be launching the revision microsite where you will find an array of different revision techniques that we advise students to use. Students will also get a workshop from myself and Ms Larkin on Monday morning. Thank you and take care. Mr Ryan – Year 7 Progress Leader

To celebrate Chinese New Year- students of Mandarin prepared a banner using traditional Chinese paints and brushes during Language Club this week.
Year 8 What a pleasure it was to see all the Year 8 students coming in to complete their Lateral Flow Testing and hear all about their Christmas break. Hearing what they did with their families and friends to celebrate the New Year. It is clear the students are back and raring to get back into their school routine. Year 8 exam week commences on Wednesday 26th January. Next week myself and Ms Larkin will be discussing the new Year 8 revision Microsite, which includes lots of different revision techniques, as well as, how to maintain motivation when revising. Please make sure you are aware of the exam timetable which students will have received. Additionally, please have a look at the microsite as it is incredibly useful for our students. A letter has been sent out to inform you that we have implemented a new late system which if a student is late to school they will be expected to complete a 20-minute detention on the same day at lunchtime, failure to attend this 20-minute detention will lead to the student sitting a 60-minute detention on a Friday afternoon. If you have any questions, please contact me. Our Year Progress Leader Award which I had the pleasure of awarding in assembly this week goes to Blu Stedman, this is for showing incredible courage and maturity over the Christmas period which definitely should be recognised. Please encourage your child to attend our fantastic array of extracurricular clubs that we offer at Roding Valley, it is never too late to join them and try something new. As always if you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact me jfazakerley@rodingvalley.net Miss Fazakerley – Year 8 Progress Leader
New Timetables Does your child need a new copy of their timetable? You can now email
timetables@rodingvalley.net to request a new timetable. Please state your child’s name and Academic Mentor group and a new timetable will be emailed back to you.
Year 9 I would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year and welcome back to Year 9 in 2022. I trust you all enjoyed the festive period and were able to spend some quality time with your loved ones. This term promises to a very important and busy one with lots going on; starting with Year 9 Parents Evening, next Thursday 20th January. You should have received communication about this earlier in the week, which outlined how and where to book appointments. This is a perfect opportunity for you to discuss your child's progress with each of their teachers, and look at what can be put in place to further support their learning and progress. I encourage everyone to book as many appointments as possible, and ensure your child sits with you during these appointments. Please do contact your child's individual teachers or academic mentor should you have any queries at all regarding this event. After the success of our first Year 9 Digital Week before Christmas, we will be incorporating another digital week into our busy curriculum this half term. If your child has participated in the Chromebook scheme, please remind them to bring their devices in for the duration of the digital week; starting Monday 31st January. These 'digital weeks' ensure all the valuable IT skills gained during our virtual learning period won't be forgotten and can be used effectively to further compliment our already effective teaching and learning strategies. Another further compliment to our already effective T&L strategies; and taking our learning outside the classrooms, will see an exciting Challenge and Enrichment trip taking place on Thursday 3rd February. We will be taking 30 Year 9 students to visit the Natural History Museum in London. Invites have been sent out to those students who were lucky enough to be selected for this trip, so please ensure you are regularly checking your inboxes to ensure your child doesn't miss out on these exciting opportunities. Another important date for the diary is our Year 9 Options Evening, which will take place on Thursday 10th February. This event will provide yourself and your son/daughter with all of the relevant information needed to make informed choices when selecting GCSE options. Further information regarding this evening will be circulated in due course, but please do make a note of the date. As always, we are continuing our focus and drive on attendance and punctuality. Attending school on time is imperative in setting your child up for a successful day. During period 1, important messages are given, uniform and equipment checks occur and our important careers and personal development curriculum are delivered as well as year group assemblies taking place. I would like to remind all parents that your child should arrive to school via the Brook Road pedestrian gate by no later than 8.35am. If they arrive after this time, they will sign in via the 'late gate' located by the pedestrian bridge on Alderton Hill. If they are late to school, they will receive a 20 minute 'late detention' at lunchtime that same day. If they fail to attend this, it will result in them serving a 60-minute detention on Friday after school. Please can you work with your child to ensure they are doing everything they can to ensure they are punctual to school. I'm looking forward to an extremely positive and successful term for our Year 9's and can't believe that this will be our last full term as KS3 students. Once we return after May half term, we will see them break out into their GCSE options subjects and turn into mature and independent KS4 students. Wow, how quickly does time fly! As always, please don't hesitate to contact myself or your child's academic mentor should you have any queries at all. I'm only ever a phone call or email away.
Miss Edwards – Year 9 Progress Leader
Year 10 A big well done to Year 10 for making a great start to the New Year. I have tried to visit as many classrooms as I can and the atmosphere in class is studious, hardworking and engaging so this is really promising!!
Lateness Can I remind all staff and parents that any lateness to school will result in a late detention at lunch time now and not after school as before so please do try to get to school on time. Remember, as a school we are trying to prepare you for the world of work and being on time is a key expectation in any job!!
Timetables Can I please ask students to look at Edulink to check on any timetable changes as I know there have been some room changes for certain groups moving forward Role Models Can I just say what a pleasure it has been to see so many Year 10 students behaving so maturely in corridors, especially holding doors open for younger students and being so courteous and polite in and around the building. The first week back has been a real positive start and I am proud of the manner in which Year 10 has approached your studies. Well done and have a good weekend Mr Fletcher – Year 10 Progress Leader

Year 11 A Cracking start to 2022 by our Year 11 It was great to see so many of you at our Year 11 & 13 Revision and Exam Revision virtual meeting on Thursday (just a reminder that this was recorded so if you missed it, please head over to our website where the link for you to view is) I am eager for our students to be attending all of their bespoke intervention and support sessions. We have a vast array of resources and revision materials and it is key for students that they get some extra time with a subject specialist teacher who is genuinely invested in the success of each student and who understands what best suits students that they know and have worked with. It is also important that students make their way to the start of lessons on time and come prepared for the lesson with pens, highlighters, books, materials and home learning completed. We want to maintain good habits and motivate students to continue to take responsibility for their learning experience each day. I do hope that this is a happy, healthy and successful year for us all! Ms Preston – Year 11 Progress Leader

Apollo theatre Trip to Wicked. On the 24th November 2021, 45 Year 8 students left school at 12:00 to go and see Wicked at the Apollo theatre in London. As we boarded the coach, everyone began to stampede towards the back row of the coach. The journey took about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Many of us took loads of photos of the London eye, houses of parliament and we all started waving to random people on busses who then waved back! During the show we were able to enjoy sweets and drinks from the interval however they only accepted card payments. The architecture in the theatre was amazing! It was so intricate and the actors were really good!
EFYC: Climate Action Friday 19th November 2021, Epping Forest District Council welcomed four local schools: Epping St Johns, Davenant Foundation, Roding Valley High School and West Hatch High School into their council chamber, in order to hear from guest speakers, participate in quizzes and ultimately have their say on Climate Change. The day focused on climate change and how we, collectively, can make a difference. Here we heard from a string of guest speakers from Sustainable Travel officer Nick Hill to Nutritionist Ashleigh Howard, detailing what initiatives are currently in place and offering valuable advice on how we can all play our part in helping Essex become Carbon Neutral The conference hosted a debate, which saw the attendees discussing the motion: ‘This house believes that the blocking of roads and other disruptions, is the right way to get climate justice’. Epping Forest Youth Councillor, Bianca Nedelcu proposed the motion, detailing in her opening statement the efficacy of ‘disruptive’ forms of protest, giving examples like the Suffragettes to demonstrate how unconventional methods garner government attention resulting in productive reformation.
On the way back we got caught up in traffic from a car crash so the journey took about 2 hours but it was really fun because we were allowed to use our phones. I would really recommend it! By Skye Nash. The RVHS ‘Exposed’ Magazine is a perfect way for our students to get involved in what’s happening at RVHS and express their different passions! This previous term, students created a special Christmas edition of RVHS ‘Exposed’ including a variety of Christmas themed articles, fun puzzles, and recipes. The magazine is ran completely by a team of brilliant RVHS students ranging from Year 7 to Year 13, students have the freedom to write about anything they are passionate about meaning the magazine is jam packed with a variety of articles that everyone should enjoy. Once the articles have been written, we have a team of student editors who put the magazine together and finalise everything. In the last edition, the following students were involved and wrote some brilliant pieces – a big well done to them all! Cover - Defne Eren and Imogen Benjamin (Y7Be) Beatles & Oasis - Ellie Wakinshaw (Y8Ne) EFYC Climate Action - Erin Weekes (Y12Q) Puzzle - Isabelle Hariott and Frankie Jude (Y7Be) Christmas Poem - Jenade Rayment (Y8Ma) Christmas Films - Lesley Aggrey (Y12R) Drawing - Nicoale Perju (Y7Be) David Bowie - Poppy Tribe (Y11Ne) Cryptocurrency - Sebastian Vidojevic-Nash (Y13U) Robins - Skye Haddadi (Y11Li) Wicked Review - Skye Nash (Y8Be) Christmas baking - Samanta Daci (Y7Be) Editors - Tommy Yeomans (Y12R), Joseph James(Y11Be), and Lola Boyle (Y12R) The RVHS ‘Exposed’ Magazine is available online for all to read on our school website.

#Team Drama update! Wednesday 19th January will see the re-launch of the Y7 drama club. Our Y11 mentors are looking forward to working with Y7s on a project to create a Shakespeare Showcase. We hope to perform this showcase this term, either to a live audience or streamed online, so if any Y7s want to come back to club, or start from scratch, now would be a good time to jump on. Y7 drama club is every Wednesday from 13:20 to 14:00, in CA1. Our Y9 and Y10 students are making great progress on their play for National Theatre Connections 2022. The play, find a Partner, is a brand new work by Miriam Battye. It's a dark, comedic satire on dating shows - kind of Love island meets Squid game - and the company will perform in school on Monday 19th April, then at Arts Depot, North Finchley, on Monday 25th April, which is a public performance: tickets available from the Arts Depot box office. High School musical rehearsals are going great guns. Tickets for our whole school production will be made available via ParentPay in the next two weeks. The shows are 29th to the 31st March. The next stage of the process will see the Y811 tech club stepping up to work on the set, while the art department supports us with costume and other design features, such as scenery painting. If you would like to get involved with supporting the production off-stage, then speak to your art teacher.

With Ms Preston Welcome to The First Wellbeing Bulletin of the Year! This time of year seems to be all about fresh starts and new year resolutions and it sometimes feels like we’re setting ourselves up to fail - so this post has nothing to do with resolutions! Monday 17th January or BLUE MONDAY - reckoned to be the most depressing day of the year. This was first coined in 2005 by a travel company who believed that they had calculated this using an equation. With a focus on the positives of this as an opportunity to focus on ourselves, here are some recommendations for this day: Wearing bright colours Exercise Plan a day out or even a holiday Have a special meal Light some candles Phone a friend and catch up Plan some self-care Listen to your favourite album Run a bubble bath Sign up to a charity that you are drawn to, time and donations are always welcome Start the new season on TV that you’ve been promising yourself!! This could also be an opportunity to champion wellbeing in your place of work, thinking about what could help support you and those that you work with and talking that through with managers, leaders and supervisors as well the colleagues in the workplace. It’s looking as though 2022 will be a year of embedding wellbeing and developing a holistic approach to mental and physical health, it would be lovely to hear from any of you who have any good ideas for workplace wellbeing, please do email me at tpreston@rodingvalley.net - I can include them in the next edition! Here’s wishing you a happy, healthy and successful new year and beyond! I’m off to listen to an old LP!
1
Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.
2
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
3
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
4
5
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
6
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
7
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
8
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/ 14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/ Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried. You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents. If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.
Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
