Message from the Headteacher I truly hope that all members of our school community are keeping safe and well, our deepest condolences to all those families who have suffered a loss at this time. We are a community school and we extend our full support to all our students and their immediate families during this challenging period of lockdown recognising the different hardships it brings. Some households are suffering financial hardship, please do contact your Year Progress Leader if you believe you may now be eligible for the Free School Meal vouchers. We also appreciate the difficulties of home-schooling when working from home, many of my teachers can vouch for this! We have issued 76 laptops received from the Department of Education and loaned numerous school chrome books to many of our students who were struggling to access the remote curriculum. Please do contact your Year Progress Leader, if you feel your child may be eligible for one of these devices. This week, we updated our remote learning provision as detailed in my letter dated 8th January Letter This letter explains how your child should access the curriculum offered. Live lessons should now appear on the student’s google calendar, please bear with us if any IT teething problems still exist, but we hoped to have ironed most of these out this week. The provision offered is differentiated to reflect the student’s age and point of education. We believe that for many reasons, including physical and mental well-being, productivity and engagement, it's best to have a mixture of live and self-directed hours. Students have assignments set to do in their self-directed hours and these hours are important to allow students to complete tasks properly, get feedback, and progress. We will continually monitor the provision offered and adapt as appropriate as we move forward. Our website has now been updated with all support videos and a FAQ section for parents is now available on the Home Learning page We have always believed in the rounded education of the whole child and will continue to offer well-being and pastoral support during this time. Students are aware of our iamnotok@rodingvalley.net email. Welfare contact will continue and students will be invited to take part in increased supportive pastoral provision.

The feedback from the teachers this week has been excellent, high attendance in the live provision and increased motivation with independent tasks. This is great news and means that we must continue to support each other in the continued support and motivation of these young people. Thank you for all your positive feedback via welfare calls and emails into the school, this has been greatly appreciated by my staff who are working incredibly hard to continue to offer a high-quality standard of remote education. I do think it must be recognised that there is no actual replacement for ‘face to face’ learning in a school environment and that learning in the home environment cannot replace the social aspect of the school. Our students do need to take time out to look after their mental well-being, come off the computers and take regular exercise. Please encourage them to participate in the PE challenges and provision being offered, there are numerous House Competitions for them to enter across a range of different subjects. I can’t wait to cook the ‘Vegan Chilli’ this week! As it currently stands, we do not know when the majority of students will be allowed back into school and unfortunately, we have no further updates for parents or students in Year 11 and 13. Gavin Williamson, Minister of Education did write to Ofqual this week and issued this press release, https://www.tes.com/news/gcses-2021-full-williamsons-letter-ofqual There is now a 2-week consultation for a decision from the government on the proposals for teacher assessed grades in the summer of 2021 Therefore, we must encourage these young people to continue with their studies and reassure them that we will do everything we can to support them onto the next stage in their education and/ or work. Please enjoy the rest of the bulletin, it is a great celebration of the amazing work being achieved by our students from home, with some ideas of ‘things to do’ in lockdown. Stay safe, Kindest regards from a very proud Headteacher, Sharon Jenner

With Ms Preston

To promote both the welling of both our students and staff, Ms Preston has some top tips for reducing the strain on your eyes that may come with remote teaching and learning. It is highly likely many teachers and students will experience eye discomfort and vision problems, due to having to look at screens for extended periods. You may experience one of the following symptoms:  Watery eyes  Dry eyes The simple fact behind these symptoms is that you  Double vision  Headaches may blink as much as 3 times less than when you are  Burning eyes  Sore of stiff neck and shoulders looking at something far away, leaving eyes dry and irritated. And when you focus at the same distance for  Blurry vision a long time, it can cause vision to blur temporarily, and the muscles around the eye to tire, which can cause headaches.

Here are some easy tips to prevent Eye Strain before it starts

1

FOLLOW THE 20-20-20 RULE Give your eyes the chance to focus both near and far away. Set a timer for 20 minutes. When the timer goes off, look into the distance at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. If you are in the middle of a lesson, ask your students to do the same. Twenty minutes, 20 feet, 20 seconds.

PROTECT YOUR EYES AGAINST SCREEN GLARE

2

Place your laptop or desktop in a place relatively clear of sunlight, and away of light sources immediately above your screen. Adjust your monitor's brightness and contrast settings and try keeping it at half-brightness. If the above is not enough, use an anti-glare matte screen filter or glasses.

3

POSITION YOUR MONITOR FARTHER AWAY

4

GET OUTSIDE

Adjust your monitor to about an arm’s length away from your eyes. Keep the top of the screen at or just below eye level.

In between lessons, at break or lunch get some fresh air. It will allow your eyes to interact with a distant visual space, which is a less stressful visual demand than a near point task.

Year 8 Happy New Year to all our year 8's and their families and welcome to the Spring term. Although this is a very different start to this term, there are already so many positives to celebrate. I have heard wonderful things from many different teachers about how well the year 8's are doing; both in their live lessons as well as completing some amazing independent work. You should all be very proud of yourselves. I would like to thank the many parents who have been in touch with such kind, positive and affirming words about the virtual provision that we are offering. This truly means a lot to the staff and inspires us to continue evolving and improving our offer to ensure all our students stay motivated and engaged. By now, many of you will have had a phone call from either your child's academic mentor or another staff member at school. These calls are an important way for you to stay in touch with the school and discuss any possible concerns that your child may be experiencing. Please do look out for these fortnightly calls; they will most likely be coming from a withheld number. The virtual parents evening that was held on Wednesday & Thursday was a successful one, with many of you getting the chance to meet your child's academic mentors; who have informed me of their success and how lovely it was to put a 'face to the name'. Thank you to those who took the time to attend these virtual appointments. Aside from your child's live lessons and independent learning tasks, there are numerous things on offer for your child to be engaging with. There are multiple house competitions currently running and I encourage as many of you as possible to get involved with these. There is the weekly 'Wellbeing Wednesday' bulletin with tasks to complete which continue to promote a positive mental wellbeing, which is ever so important at this time. There are also useful phone numbers and websites to visit should you need any additional support. I would like to remind you all about the iamnotok@rodingvalley.net email, which is a service I would encourage you to use if needed. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me or your child's academic mentor should you have any queries at all about anything. We are all only a phone call or email away and are happy to help in any way we can. Please stay safe and I look forward to another productive and positive fortnight of virtual learning.

Miss Edwards – Year 8 Progress Leader

Year 9 The term has started and the third lockdown has begun but the school is in a great position to offer online learning. During the Year 9 Assembly on Monday, I spoke about the essential use of Google Calendar for following the week's' . live lessons'. Students have been sent invites to all live lessons and once they accept the lesson it will appear on their calendar, there is, therefore, no excuse for accidentally missing any of these lessons. During the past few weeks, I have had the pleasure of being involved in many of the live lessons and the number of children involved is excellent, remember if there are any specific questions about learning, students can always email their subject teachers. The School believes that for many reasons, including well-being, productivity, and engagement, it's best to have this mixture of live and self-directed hours. The children are getting a full day of lessons - just because the lessons aren't in 'real-time' doesn't mean they are not getting their full learning provision. Year 9 have assignments to do in their self-directed hours and these hours are important to allow students to complete tasks properly, get feedback and progress. Please stay safe and as always thanks for all your support

Year 10 I want to start by wishing you all a Happy New Year. I do hope that 2021 brings us all happiness and health. I hope that everyone is safe and well. We have now had a few successful weeks of remote learning and I am grateful for how students in year 10 have handled this and the support that parents have given the school during this time. Students in year 10 are receiving all of the lessons live via Google Meet. Where they are able to access the full support of their teacher, engage with their learning and get feedback. Our staff have worked really hard to get this up and running for our students and it has been lovely to see students engaging with it and benefiting from those efforts. I am really keen to get all students engaged with their learning as much as possible and therefore keen to support students in any way possible. If your child is having any difficulties accessing online learning or IT then please get in contact with the Academic mentor who will be able to support or pass your query onto me. We have seen some great entries into our house competitions. Please remember that there are a lot of extra things that our students can get involved with. Take a look at our House competitions by clicking on this link. Again, I want to say a big thank you to everyone for their support during this time. Mr Warry – Year 10 Progress Leader

Congratulations to Joseph James and Sonny Binet for being nominated as ‘Student of the Week’, Sonny made the amazing cake pictured below. Well done, keep up the fantastic work!

Class of the Week Year 10 Carbon

Year 11 I hope by now you have all got used to accessing your lessons online? It is essential that you continue working as hard as you can so that when your teachers need to award a grade they are able to give the best grade they can. Please make sure that you submit the assignments on time and to the best of your ability as these are the evidence that we will use to prove that you are working at a particular level. If you are unable to attend lessons for whatever reason please make me, or your teachers aware. I am here to help and will do whatever I possibly can. If there are issues with IT, or your doing all your work on your phone, let me know as we may be able to help there as well. Saying all of that, I do also want you to take time away from your computers. Unlike the previous Lockdowns the weather is now horrible and whereas we could all go out in the sunshine, the British weather isn't allowing for that at the moment. It is, however, vital that you take time to relax and recharge. If you feel that you need someone to talk to, remember the iamnotok@rodingvalley.net link. I am incredibly proud of how well you are all working and think that you are all coping remarkably well. Please keep up the hard work and if you need anything please let me know. Mr Ryan – Year 11 Progress Leader

1

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

2

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

3

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

4 5

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

6

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

7

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
