“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
RVHS Bulletin Weekending Friday 17th June 2022 Dear Parent and carers,
1530pts
I would like to welcome everyone back after what I trust was a restful mid-summer break and that you all enjoyed celebrating the Platinum Jubilee. I was happy that I managed to get up to Pall Mall for the People’s Pageant and thoroughly enjoyed the carnival atmosphere and seeing the Queen herself make an appearance on her balcony. Students seemed to have enjoyed a variety of events from street parties, attending the concert and local events. Last week, Mr Cocker did an excellent assembly for the Platinum Jubilee, where students across the school were given a photographic tour of an extraordinary life. This was linked to our theme of the week ‘Gratitude’. Students were shown how all of the life of the Queen has been about dedication, service and endeavour and a wonderful celebration of a promise made at 21 which has been kept for 70 years - you can watch the presentation shared below. There have been numerous Jubilee House Competitions and I trust that memories of the Platinum Jubilee will stay with the students. This week, we held our Student Leadership Interviews and I would like to thank all of our Year 12 students that applied for the positions. The high calibre of applications that we received made selecting the students for the roles extremely difficult. After a very rigorous selection process, I would like to announce that the following students have been appointed as our new Head Boy, Head Girl and their Deputies for the 2022-2023 Academic Year:
1050pts
1130pts
1190pts
Head Girl Tolani Aradeon
Head Boy Daniel Mehr 850pts
Deputy Head Girl Lauren Marks
Deputy Head Girl Lili Warden
Deputy Head Boy Isher Bansal
Deputy Head Boy Lewis Choules

Their first event will be to speak at the Year 6 Transition event, which will be held at the school next Thursday. I am delighted that the school is oversubscribed for next year, we have a cohort of over 260 joining us in Year 7 in September. The majority of these are first choice places and is testament to the improved standing of the school in the local community. Next week, they will join us for a variety of days, baseline testing, transition day fun and an activity evening. This final half term is a very busy term and there are lots of activities going on for the students. It has been wonderful to feel a ‘buzz’ around the launch of preparations for the whole school Sports Day on Friday 15th July. The students are very excited as they represent their Houses and we have all the students out on the school field. It was great to share the school records and encourage participation in this whole school event. The students are really excited as it is the first time the school has been able to organise such a fixture since 2019 pre-COVID. It has always been such a great day and I am delighted that the school is able to start planning such key events again. As I was preparing for Transition, it was good to reflect on the year and to celebrate the enrichment that we have been able to offer the students. In these few weeks, students have visited museums and taken part in numerous sporting events and we have students out next week on their Gold Duke of Edinburgh.
Please follow us on Twitter @RodingValleyHS @RVHST&L @RodingValleyPE for live updates of school life. With the Year 11 prom coming up, on the 29th June, at Woolston Manor, we would love to have some parent volunteers join us. We had parent volunteers last year and it worked really well and a great time was had by all. If this is something that you would be interested in, then please respond to the letter by completing our Volunteer Application form that we will send out on Monday. The Year-book is also available for purchase on ParentPay. Please can we remind our Year 11 and 13 students that any medication held by the school will need to be collected before their final exam. If your child will be affected by the potential tube and rails strikes next week, please can you contact your Year Progress Leader. Thank you as always for your continued support of the school, even in the heat today, our students were a real credit. I hope that you have been enjoying the wonderful weather this week, lots of sunshine for the weekend! Regards Sharon Jenner Within a school community there will be students who have allergies some mild whilst others can be more severe and potentially life threatening. With the above in mind we would like to ask you to remind your child(ren) to always ask our canteen staff if they are unsure what ingredients have been used. Also, please ensure if your child has any known allergies we are made aware so we can support them in school and if required hold medication in school. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact Mrs Gladman via sgladman@rodingvalley.net
Our team is proud to be your child’s Year Progress Leader and very much looking forward to supporting your child and with such a great cohort of students, we are sure it will be a great half term. Year 7 Welcome back after what I hope was a lovely half term. During last week we received an assembly about the Queen's Jubilee, which was delivered by Mr Cocker. I'm sure the students found it quite educational. This week we have had two assemblies, details of which are to follow. On Wednesday, Mr Allen spoke to the whole school about Sport's Day. This is definitely one of the highlights of the year when the whole school gets to participate in cheering on members of their House and year. Each person who enters an event represents their House. I would like to encourage every member of the Year group to participate in some form or another. On Friday we received an assembly from Mr Price, where he re-set the expectations for the whole school. We may be in the final stretch of the academic year and with the warm weather but students are still expected to arrive to school in full uniform. If there is any reason why they are missing an item of uniform, please let us know and we can provide uniform on loan. Some Year 7 and 8 students went on a trip to the Natural History Museum and it was lovely to hear about what they got up to. Please keep an eye out for the Challenge and Enrichment notice, which is launching our Summer competition. Once again thank you for all your support and if you need to contact me, please don't hesitate to do so. Mr Ryan – Year 7 Progress Leader
Year 8 We are now two weeks into the summer half term and have been blessed with some fantastic weather. Please ensure that all students are coming to school appropriately, with a bottle of water, sun cream ready for the day. While the weather is increasing, please ensure our high uniform expectations are still being met. Blazers must be on their arrival to lessons which can be removed once in the lesson. As we are reaching the end of the year we appreciate that some school shoes are breaking, If this is the case please ensure that the student arrives with a note to their Academic Mentor with the date of when this will be sorted. Can you please check your daughters skirt and skort length over the half term break to ensure they meet our uniform expectations. We have so many opportunities for the Year 8 students to get involved in leading into the Summer holidays, please get your sons and daughters to come and get involved. We are looking at our end of year celebration assembly and I would love to have the pleasure of handing out even more certificates than last year! A small reminder that as a Year group we are the role models to the Year 7's and we have been brilliant so far, so please make sure that we are continuing to be strong leaders, that I know you all are. A huge congratulations to Zoe Hedges, who has competed at the County Championships in athletics at Melbourne park in Chelmsford last Saturday, she competed against Year 9 students and still got to the final and came fourth. What an achievement! We have an excellent student, George Francis who is competing this weekend for England in Boxing. I cannot wait to hear the result! Good luck! Make us proud. Miss Fazakerley – Year 8 Progress Leader
Year 9 I would like to congratulate every single Year 9 for settling into their GCSE options so brilliantly. I have been so impressed by how well all of our students have transitioned into their GCSE options, applied themselves, but also how they have raised concerns and queries with their timetables in the correct manner. I can't wait to see our lovely bunch of students get stuck into these options over the next two years. Keep up the hard work! Going into these final five weeks of the school year I want to encourage all of our students to work as hard as they would at the start of the year, and be the best version of themselves. Mr Price delivered an expectations assembly this morning which reiterated our high expectations of all our students to do the right thing, all the time. Of late, I have started to see a large number of our Year 9 girls rolling their skirts. This is not in line with our uniform policy, isn't acceptable conduct and sanctions will now start to be enforced. Please can you reiterate the uniform expectation with your daughter to ensure she is well aware that rolling of skirts is simply unacceptable. Enjoy the warmer weather and remember to contact your child's academic mentor should you have any concerns at all regarding your child. Miss Edwards– Year 9 Progress Leader
ACED Personal Development 9OX had a fantastic Personal development session with week with Miss Hodges. They took a look at how we manage change and can develop resilience.
Year 10 End of Year Exams As you will no doubt be aware Year 10 exams are approaching (Monday 20th June - Thursday 30th June inclusive). The majority of lessons in the build up to the end of year exams are now focussing on revision and exam style questions so it is vitally important to be at school and approach all lessons in a diligent and conscientious manner. Students have been issued with their own exam timetable and I have included the complete exam timetable below;
Students who have Access Arrangements will do their exams in the Main Hall
Mobile phones, wrist watches and any form of electronic equipment must not be taken into the examination room
Revision notes or books must not be taken into the exam room
Students must arrive for their exams with the correct equipment – BLACK pens, pencils, ruler, eraser, compasses, protractor and a CALCULATOR
Seating arrangements can be found on the Individual Candidate Timetables
Please also note a letter to all parents has also been sent regarding exam protocol, expectations and when students need to be in school. Please do read this as on some days they will come in and leave after their exams. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Year 10 the best of luck in what will be their first real experience of a GCSE exam environment.
A huge congratulations to the following Year 10 students who I am proud to call Year 10 'YES' prefects. Following an application process, they will now become senior school prefects who are in post to support the staff and tutors of our new Year 7 students. This is a fantastic opportunity to have a huge impact on our lower school pupils and I know staff are looking forward to working with the prefects too. Letters of congratulations have now been sent out to all students listed, please return the reply slip to accept this role. Safa Malik

CAREERS WEEK As part of the upcoming Careers Week (Monday 4th July- Friday 8th July) students have, during PD this week, been working on CV's and covering letters. The CV's need to be returned to Mrs Mason by Monday 20th June 2022 and will help him when she is organising 'mock interviews' for the students. It is imperative these CV's are completed. Please also note that 'Take Your Child to Work Day' is planned for Tuesday 5th July and all students should by now have organised this. Have a lovely sunny weekend! Mr Fletcher– Year 10 Progress Leader
Year 11 I do hope that everyone is enjoying the sunshine and just wanted to say how brilliantly the Year 11's are doing as we arrive at the final week of the Summer 2022 GCSE season. This week I have taken delivery of the 2017-2022 Year Book, this is on ParentPay and will be given out on the 29th June 2022 at the final assembly. I will also ensure that they are available on results day too. There are still Prom tickets available and I'm looking forward to our celebrations. Have a lovely sunny weekend!
Ms Preston – Year 11 Progress Leader
Year 7 and 8 Trip to the Natural History Museum It was a wonderful day out on Wednesday for a group of Key Stage 3 students at the Natural History Museum. Not only had Dippy returned, but students had the opportunity to do some live lessons in the Mammal Room! Great to see learning happening outside of the classroom and a fun day out all around. It has been a great year for Enrichment Trips with over 240 Key Stage 3 Students having the chance for a day out. Thank you to all staff that supported these trips!
Summer Concert 2022. Please send a video of your singing or playing to jsavage@rodingvalley.net by Friday 8th July. Performances must be in school uniform. All Year groups were represented last time, so it would be lovely if this were the case again. It will be released at the end of term.
This week, Year 10 students used their Chromebooks to revise for their upcoming end of term science exams with Miss Hodges during Digital Week. Keep up the amazing work!

On Saturday 11th June, four Roding Valley High School students attended the Essex County Schools Athletics Championships at Chelmsford Athletics Club representing the West Essex and Harlow District. All four students qualified for the finals of their individual events and performed fantastically on the day. Zoe Hedges in Year 8 finished 4th in the 200m final with a time of 27.65 secs which is a great achievement as she was competing against both Year 8s and 9s. From Year 10, Daniel Carter finished 6th with a new personal best of 4 minutes and 38 seconds in the 1500m, Harry Clifton ran the fastest time in the heats of 22.91 seconds but unfortunately didn't compete in the final due to illness, however his time in the heat was over a second quicker than the winning athlete in the final, and finally Jessie Briggs finished 6th in the 100m final with a time of 13.5 seconds. Again these are remarkable results as these students competed against both Year 10 and Year 11 athletes.
A huge well done to all four students who took part, they represented the District and School brilliantly. Mr Allen and Miss Fazakerley
This week, Year 10 students had fun in their Biology class with Mr Miah using their Chromebooks during Digital Week.

Gender Neutral Uniform for Years 7 - 11
Extreme hairstyles or colour are not acceptable. If colour is being used on hair it must be a natural colour. (Colours such as blue, red, purple etc. are not acceptable). Students should not have their hair shaved below a number two and there should not be any patterns shaved into the hair. Hair bands should be discreet and black or blue in colour. Our school champions the right of staff and students to embrace all Afro-hairstyles. We acknowledge that Afro-textured hair is an important part of our Black staff and students’ racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance. We welcome Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locks, twists, braids, cornrows, fades, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps. Braiding jewellery/accessories are not permitted including but not limited to metal hair cuffs and coloured string wrapped around the braids. If this is due to cultural or religious reasons, please feel free to talk to a member of our team and we can discuss flexibility. At this school, we recognise and celebrate our staff and students’ identities. We are a community built on an ethos of equality and respect where hair texture and style have no bearing on anyone’s ability to succeed
1
Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.
2
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
3
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
4 5
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
6
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
7
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
8
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/ 14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/ Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried.
