Dear Parents / Carers, Please let me start by wishing everyone in our Roding Valley High School community a very Happy and Safe Christmas. Please click on this link for the school Christmas Concert. A wonderful show of talent at the school. The latest Newsletter from the CLP Trust is now available on website. It has been wonderful today to join so many of our Celebration Assemblies, the students enjoyed their rewards presented for hard work and effort this last term. Please enjoy the bulletin, it is packed with celebrations, achievement and school events. This is a great school with amazing students, teachers and staff. I thank you all for your continued support. As per my letter of the 9th December, I have made you aware of our planned phased return in January 2022 to allow for all students to take an onsite lateral flow test before returning to school. All students will receive either face to face or online learning provision from Wednesday 5th January, except the days when their year group is attending for testing.

Yesterday, all schools received a letter from the Secretary of State for Education, Rt. Hon Nadhim Zahawi. With the rising Covid cases, his ambition remains to keep schools open and operating normally in the new year. He asked, that we all continue to test twice-weekly after the initial onsite test. Staff will test before returning to work on their first day.

480pts

From January, all parents and visitors are to take lateral flow tests before attending any school event or meeting. The government advocates that vaccinations and boosters for the school community are the most effective way to keep school open.

450pts

If your child is in receipt of free school meals, then you will receive a voucher via email on Monday 20th December 2021. I truly hope that we return as planned, however, please be reassured that we do have a full contingency plan which we will share with you if needed. From all the staff here at the school, we wish you all a very HAPPY CHRISTMAS and new year. See you all in 2022! Mrs Jenner - Headteacher Kind regardsus: always, Follow Sharon Jenner

Year 7

Happy Christmas

We've made it. It has been an incredibly busy, fun packed Term but we can now say that we have completed a 3rd of the academic year. It is hard to believe that the year group has been in Roding Valley for four months! I was very fortunate to be able to go on a theatre visit with 101 of the year group to see the amazing Matilda. It was such an enjoyable experience and I can safely say that the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the slushies. It has been lovely awarding so many certificates in our end of term assembly. The year group have really been phenomenal. I would like to take the opportunity now, to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Here's to 2022

Mr Ryan – Year 7 Progress Leader

Year 8 I am so impressed by all of our Year 8's in our Inter House sports hall athletics competition. It was noted by the whole PE department that both sides of the year were by far the most engaged and the best effort shown over all the other years. This is always pleasing to hear as I know how hard our Year 8 students work. I cannot believe it is already Christmas. What an amazing term this has been! Year 8 has had so many opportunities and all the students continue to make us proud. Well done on all the hard work Year 8's continue to show throughout all of their endeavours. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope all of our year 8 community remains safe over the holidays. I hope you all have a restful and enjoyable Christmas. I look forward to welcoming all the Year 8's back on the 10th January in the new year ready to continue being the best version of yourself. Miss Fazakerley – Year 8 Progress Leader

Year 9 Wow, we have made it through a third of Year 9! Well done to all Year 9's for their hard work, determination and attitude over these past few months. I have been extremely impressed with the application of all students to their studies and I look forward to seeing this continue when we return to school in the new year. It was lovely to see so many year 9's enjoy a trip to the theatre on Wednesday to see Woman in Black. Our students behaved impeccably and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Looking into the new year, many Year 9's have been selected to visit the Natural History Museum as part of our Challenge & Enrichment program, and we also have many students heading off on the Ski Trip at the end of the half term. I encourage all our students to involve themselves in as many trips, visits, and extra-curricular opportunities as they can. Today we hosted our Virtual Celebration assembly, and it was truly amazing to see so many different students receive an award, in recognition of their hard work. Congratulations to all winners, and well done on all your effort so far this year.

Merry Christmas

I would like to wish all students in Year 9, their families, and friends the warmest of Christmas wishes and a Happy New Year. Enjoy this festive period, but please stay safe. I look forward to welcoming you all back to school at 8.30am on Friday 7th January 2022. Miss Edwards – Year 9 Progress Leader

Year 11 I wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate the students in Year 11 - it has been an enormously busy and eventful first term and they have risen to the challenges presented to them admirably. They have had guest speakers, a performance of Christmas Carol, revision sessions, exams, sixth form and college taster days and applications to their post 16 choices, interventions, extra sessions and many have been involved in further sporting or enrichment activities such as netball, football and Duke of Edinburgh. I would also like to say a big thank you to the Year 11 Academic Mentor team from me and on behalf of the students. The Academic Mentor Team have delivered period 7 sessions to students three times a week to help move them forwards in English, Maths or Science.  Mr Rahman  Ms Bleakley  Mr Rahman  Ms Di Ilio  Mr Qureshi  Ms Bates  Mr Poovilingham  Mr Jennings I do hope that there will be plenty of opportunity for some good times with family and friends so that students return to us fresh and ready for the new year and would like to wish you all a very peaceful Christmas and a healthy, safe New Year! Thank you for your ongoing support..

Ms Preston – Year 11 Progress Leader

Sixth Form Year 11 Taster Day It was a pleasure to work with so many enthusiastic year 11s on our taster day last week. I know it helped lots of students with finalising their subject choices and gave them a good flavour of what studying in the sixth form is like. Thank you to all those students who have taken time to apply for sixth form. We look forward to interviewing these students in the Spring Term. Some students visited a college as part of their taster day and found out how this educational environment was different to their own. They got to try out some T level qualifications and were supported with making applications. Well done to all of Year 11 for their exemplary attitude on this day.

Christmas Jumper Day On 10th December, the sixth form and staff celebrated Christmas Jumper Day. We raised £160 in aid of Save the Children.

UCAS and Careers Applications I wanted a say a huge well done to all those students in Year 13 who are working hard on university and apprenticeship applications. We have now sent off the majority of our UCAS applications and students have been really excited to receive some fantastic offers from their chosen universities. Those students who are not making a university application, are working with Mrs Mason at securing a job at some prestigious firms. If your son or daughter requires any support with university or job applications please make sure they come and see us and we will help in any way we can.

Ms Wheaton- Director of Sixth Form

Last Friday, our students celebrated Christmas with our annual Christmas dinner, served to them by Mrs. Jenner – Headteacher and Miss Dyer - Deputy Headteacher. It was a lot of fun and hard work, with food served to over 1300 students and staff.

On Friday 10 December, year 10 and 11 were treated to a performance of A Christmas Carol by The Globe Players. The show was engaging revision tool, which really brought the ideas from the story to life. As a two person show, the actors created a remarkable range of scenes. The quality of the performance was evident from our students’ appreciation of the show: they were clearly captivated by the occasion. Having the opportunity to see this production helped to capture the Christmas spirit.

Year 10 STEM Trip to Centre of The Cell This term our Year 10 students enjoyed a STEM trip to Centre of the Cell, we have included their feedback on this trip below: “The trip was spectacular. I enjoyed every minute of it, the "science nucleus video games" was ecstatic and felt so surreal ,but I think the most exciting part was the lecture segment when we learned more about the immune system. I found it enlightening because we were already studying that topic in biology, and having other people educate us was elevating”

“I really enjoyed the trip to the centre of the cell, it helped me a lot with cells and it gave me a chance to experience how it is like to work with cells. I also liked traveling to Queen Mary University as for my profession, I would like to study medicine, so this trip allowed me to enhance how university is like. Overall, I enjoyed this trip and believe it's a great way to engage in science”.

A wide range of topics were covered when Epping Forest MP Dame Eleanor Laing joined Year 12 and Year 13 students for a digital surgery on last week. Her online debate with the students followed an earlier session with Loughton Residents Association councillor Judy Jennings. Our students have been involved with the digital project over the last month and on Friday the online Politics Project initiative saw students, who were in the school’s Sixth Form Centre, raise a number of local and national issues with Dame Eleanor. Topics covered ranged from COP 26, gay marriage, the role of the Deputy Speaker, democratic engagement, the House of Lords and flooding and water supply issues in Loughton.

This week the students had great fun making delicious ginger biscuits.

Food & Nutrition Christmas Recipe Christmas Rocky Road Ingredients:  450g white chocolate broken into chunks  200g custard creams broken in to quarters  50g shelled unsalted pistachios (not essential)  75g dried cherries (or cranberries/raisins)  150g pink and white mini marshmallows  40g white or milk chocolate jazzies  1tsp sprinkles  80g butter

Method 1. Butter a 20x5cm deep square baking tray and line with baking parchment 2. Melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water, ensuring the base of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Stir occasionally until fully melted and smooth. 3. Mix the custard creams, pistachios, dried cherries and marshmallows in to the melted chocolate mixture, reserving a little of each to decorate later, until evenly coated. Tip the rocky road mix in to the prepared tray, smooth the surface with the back of a wooden spoon, then poke the reserved ingredients and Jazzies in to the top and scatter with sprinkles. 4. Chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours until firm. 5. Remove from the tin to a chopping board and cut in to even squares.

It's been a busy term in regard to revision, study & home learning! Our Year 11s and Year 13s have completed a round of PPEs (Pre-Public Examinations) and Year 11 have been 'closing the gap' on these exams at the end of this term. I just wanted to remind all parents about our two, very comprehensive, Revision microsites; tailor made by our teachers for our students at RVHS: 1. GCSE Revision microsite (Useful for Year 10 & 11) - please click here to access 2. A Level Revision microsite (Useful for Year 12 & 13) - please click here to access I also wanted to remind everyone that all of our revision, study skills & home learning guidance is all available on our website. Hi Parents and Carers, As many of you may know, at RVHS we now use an online, interactive literacy tool called 'Bedrock'. Bedrock is a tool that helps to improve our students Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary and improve their application of these new words. Last Monday, Ms Bleakley and I held a live-streamed parents forumthank you to those that attended! The forum was held to raise awareness of this tool & show parents how they can best engage with the software to support their child at home. To watch the Live Stream, please click here. To access the free Bedrock resources on our website, please click here. If you would like to be re-sent your parent access code via email, please email me on plarkin@rodingvalley.net

1

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

2

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

3

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

4 5

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

6

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

7

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

8

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

 11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/  14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/ Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried. You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents. If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/
