Message from the Headteacher I would like to thank all parents for their ongoing support of the school throughout what has been a challenging and unusual autumn term. This week we have held our Celebration Assemblies virtually, I was really impressed by the engagement of the celebration of achievement and the students loved them.

3490pts Yesterday, we held our Non-Uniform Day, we have raised a massive £1,137.61. Thank you all for your kind donations, which will help the House charities and Great Ormond Street, do their work. I would also like to thank you to all the staff and students that arranged this event and helped with collections, I would also like to thank Karen Cleary from our Finance department who had the hard task of counting all of the donations. Please can I ask that you check your emails for my very important letter regarding the start of term arrangements, which will provide you with details of how to report a positive Covid 19 case, I have included a link to this letter. Happy Christmas from the Senior Leadership Team and all the staff at Roding Valley High School.

Recognising and celebrating the inspirational work of teachers and staff within Essex Schools and Settings The Essex Teaching Awards 2021 celebrates the excellence in education and recognises the outstanding work going on in Essex schools and settings every day. The Teaching Awards are Essex County Councils opportunity to recognise and acknowledge the commitment, hard work and life changing impact of those working in our schools settings. This calendar year has been one like no other we have had to face, the challenges have been immense and you are all still continuing to work within the constraints and complexities of those challenges to ensure our children and young people have the best start in life. As a result, Essex County Council have decided to change the format of the Teaching Awards. They will still be opening up nominations this term so that specific individuals and teams can be nominated by Leaders, staff, governors, pupils, and parents, as we feel it is important to give our communities the opportunity to recognise the outstanding contributions that have been made which have benefitted our children and families this year. All nominations will be recognised in the spring term even though we are unable to hold a formal teaching awards evening. If you would like to nominate someone whether they are one of our Senior Leadership Team, your Child’s teacher or a member of the school support staff, please use this link Nominations closes on 31 December 2020. Essex County Council have also created a video to thank everyone for his or her contribution, to view this video, please click on play icon to the right.

I just wanted to say a massive THANK YOU for all of the efforts of our parents, students, and teachers in relation to our home learning provision! Home Learning has formed a massive part of our teaching and learning this term and so many of our students are now becoming much more familiar with using Google Classroom. Please remember, if you need any help at all with Google Classroom, then check out the home learning section on our website, by clicking here: https://rodingvalley.net/high-school/home-learning/ As you are aware- lots of our students have had to self-isolate for periods of time across this term. When this takes place, your son/daughter will receive a mixture of the live lesson and self-directed provision. Our live lessons all take place via Google Meet. Our teachers send links to your son/daughter's email account so that they can join the lesson on time. Please note that some of these lessons are 'blended' lessons, where our teachers are teaching some students in the room and some online. If you need any help or support with using Google Classroom, Google Meet or any of the Google functions- then please do contact me on plarkin@rodingvalley.net Have a wonderful, rested Christmas and a happy New Year!

'Teaching & Learning Ambassadors @ RVHS' It has been fantastic to visit so many lessons this term to speak to our T&L ambassadors. Every lesson in KS3 and KS4 has a T&L ambassador who is responsible for talking about their learning to the visitor that pops in to see them. We have included some photographs of some excellent Ambassadors this term - one picture even shows a student at home still talking on the role of T&L ambassador. Well done Lucie Marks in Year 8!

Accelerated Reader With Mr A Jones So, this is it – the end of our first term in Year 7! It has been a brilliant half term, full of successes and lots of reading. The scores have been totalled for all our hard work and quizzing, and the winning class for the Autumn term are… 7 Beryllium! As a reward, they had a lesson off timetable to watch a Christmas movie, and I think it is safe to say that they thoroughly enjoyed it. A massive well done to them. These sorts of whole-class competitions will run over the next two terms, so make a head start and help your class to the top of the leader board.

The Millionaire Reading Club In other news, last year’s millionaires (who are now in Year 8) received their reward for reaching Millionaire status and have received a £10 Amazon voucher each – All for just reading and doing their work (quizzes)! Well done to: Enru Li, Bethany Cooper, Deniz Yorulmaz, Melody Anderson-Sceats, Sienna SalekHaddadi, Harry Dickson, Lula Alexander, Anthony Dean, Emma Stoichkova, Amelia Tomlinson, Albert Luce, Ryley Henderson, Rana Yasir Mortada, Tammy Man, Louisa Nicholson, Nina Nosa-Omede, Elizabeth Babbs, David Luong, Finn Nicholson, Rowan Howe, Charlotte Palmer and Tylan Sami! With Christmas right around the corner, and dreams of rewards and presents on the horizon, let Team English leave you with a few ideas of stocking fillers!

I’m the first in the series – The final book has just been released!

Year 7 Year 7 students have completed their first term with us here at RVHS and what a term it has been! Not only have students had to manage the transition from Primary to Secondary School, they have also adapted amazingly to the current 'new normal'. It has been fantastic to see so many students coming into school each day and being the best version of themselves. On Thursday, we held a live assembly celebrating all the success within the year group over the past term. This included ARE Points Awards, 100% Attendance Awards and subject awards. I would also like to personally congratulate Lucy Compton for her fantastic commitment to the Character and Culture sessions in Period 1 lessons with Mr Bedi. She has won the Year Progress Leader Award this term. Finally, our Headteacher award went to Scarlett Fisk and Sarah Bujor for winning first and second place in the Loughton Town Christmas Card Competition. A huge well done! I would like to wish all students and parents a very Happy and Healthy Christmas & New Year and I look forward to welcoming Year 7 back in January. Miss Reed – Year 7 Progress Leader

Year 8 Wow, what a term it has been! It feels like forever ago that we returned to school in September after having 5 months off; but I am so incredibly proud of each and every Year 8. They have all shown such resilience, independence, hard work and initiative to navigate their way through this strange time, resulting in a successful and enjoyable term for all. On Tuesday, together with Mrs Jenner, I had the pleasure of delivering our Christmas celebration assembly. This was a perfect opportunity to celebrate the hardwork and dedication of so many students in our wonderful year group. Congratulations to all those students who received an award. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a happy and safe New Year. I look forward to welcoming you all back on Tuesday 5th January at 8.25am.

Year 9 Thank you to everyone for his or her hard work over the last term - it has been different and extremely challenging. The Academic mentors for each element group have worked tirelessly to deliver outstanding Period 1 sessions covering mental health and other important issues. They have supported their tutees diligently and guided them through the term. . Looking forward, there is a lot to be optimistic about in 2021. We have a Virtual Options and Parents Evening, where Option choices will be discussed and Year 9 will begin their GCSE subjects later on in the academic year. On a more holistic view, we hope the Pandemic will be dealt with and the country can return to a normality that has not been evident for some time. The coming year looks like being another defining year for everyone but I am convinced that it will be one of challenges but also of hope and positive outcomes. Merry Christmas to everyone and I hope you have a restful holiday

Year 10 It has been a really long and difficult time for all students within schools across the country but I want to acknowledge the great work that students in Year 10 have done. They have shown true resilience, determination, maturity and understanding in recent times. I would like all parents to congratulate their son/daughter on their efforts this term! We have now come to the end of the first term of GCSEs, which has seen Year 10 rise to the challenge of increased expectations and accountability and I can truly say they have done amazingly! The recent awards assembly and commendations from staff reflect just how hard the Year group has been working. It is now time for the students to spend some time with their family and get some wellearned rest in time for the next term. I want to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year! Thank you for all of the support you have given the school up until now. Stay safe and well. I look forward to seeing you all back with us after the holiday!

Year 11 We have now reached the end of the first term of year 11 and I would like to say how proud I am of the year group. 2020 has been a shocking year for everyone and year 11 have really shown their grit and determination. They have adapted to the 'new normal' spectacularly well going into the first Lockdown and coping with 'home learning' brilliantly. Then to arrive in year 11 to a completely different system and COVID regulations and an hour of intervention at the end of the day and to just 'go with it' in such a pleasant and mature manner is fantastic to see. The Year group really has shown that they have the determination to succeed. There have been some excellent results in the first round of tests with students now pushing to see what they have to do to do better next time. Sixth form and college applications have been completed and I am so pleased with the discussions I have had with them about their future plans. All in the middle of a global pandemic. In January we start preparing for the PPEs so it is essential that the year group get a rest but also do some revision whilst off. I look forward to seeing everyone in the new year and hope that we are able to build on the successes of this year. Please keep safe and well Mr Ryan – Year 11 Progress Leader

Sixth Form Charity Work Can I take this opportunity to congratulate Sixth Form Captains, House Captains and Deputy House Captains for all their brilliant work in helping organise the 'Food bank' collection, 'Christmas Jumper Day' and 'Non School Uniform Day'. All this terrific voluntary work will help support charities in the local community and we are really proud of their efforts.

Sixth Form Applications We have had an unprecedented number of applications for Sixth Form to date. The remarkable demand for places is a reflection of the hard work and commitment shown by staff and students alike. Our 'Outstanding' status has encouraged a huge increase in applications from both internal and external students. For all those who have applied you will receive a confirmation email and we will be in touch again in the New Year regarding the 'next steps'.

Sixth Form 'Late' Applications Can I remind all Year 11 students the deadline for Sixth form applications has now passed, we will be accepting late applications but will be prioritising 'on time' applications first.

University Applications The national deadline for Year 13 students to complete their UCAS applications is fast approaching (15th January 2021). However, a big well done to all students who have already sent their applications, the majority of whom have now received offers and are considering their 'firm' and 'insurance' choices. If there are any students still unsure of the process or what they need to do please come and see Mrs Sellears or myself for support. Finally, I want to take this opportunity to thank all sixth form students for the mature manner in which they have coped with this term. It has been an extremely challenging period with online lessons, isolation periods, home study and minimal pastoral care as a result of the present situation. However, as senior students the sixth form has been outstanding in the manner in which they have coped and adapted to the situation and I can only hope the New Year brings a more settled education experience. I wish you all a happy Christmas and New Year.

Matt Fletcher (Director of Sixth Form)

1

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

2

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

3

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

4 5

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

6

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

7

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

8

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

 11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/  14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/ Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried. You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents. What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
