“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

RVHS Bulletin Weekending Friday 1st July 2022 Dear Parents/ Carers,

1530pts

It is that ‘transition’ time of year for Roding Valley; a period of farewells and welcomes. We have really enjoyed meeting and getting to know our new cohort of Year 7s, who will officially join us in September. We are oversubscribed and our upcoming students were all so excited and happy to be joining our school community. The students enjoyed a fun-packed transition day in school and I would like to thank all of the Year 9 students who supported them on the day. They were all so mature and will be brilliant YES prefects of the future. On Tuesday, we said goodbye to our Year 11s. They are a fabulous year group who have just ‘got on with it’, they have shown great resilience and aspiration, especially during this exam season. They have worked so hard, so it was a real privilege to see them all together having such fun at the Prom. We welcomed a large number of them back today for the Sixth Form Transition Day, they seem to have grown up overnight. For those Year 11s who are not returning to our sixth form, I would like to take the opportunity to wish them every success for the future and please stay in touch and let us know how you are getting on. You will always be part of the Roding Valley community. Our Year 13s leave us on Tuesday and we will be sad to see them leave but we are all so proud of the wonderful young people that they have become. They have very ambitious plans, and I look forward to seeing them all on Results Day. Many are waiting on Russell Group University places and degree-level apprenticeships. They have certainly not let the challenges of the pandemic hold them back and have all worked very hard to excel. We could not be prouder of them all.

There are lots of pictures in the bulletin of all the transition events Timings School Day - From September 2022 Following the publication of the government's Schools White Paper in March 2022, the school will need to increase its curriculum time by 10 minutes per day, from September 2022. We have agreed that this additional curriculum time will be added into the Period 1 lessons. This would support activities such as Bedrock (vocabulary builder), Personal Development lessons, uniform & attendance monitoring, enhanced student careers support and themed assemblies. It will also be used for interventions across the curriculum including literacy and reading.

Updated timings are on our website and included in this bulletin, but the gates will continue to open for all students at 8:20 am, Period 1 will start at 8:30 and the day will now finish at 3:10pm. Due to the updated timings, we have also updated our Attendance Policy which is attached here as a consultation. If you would like to comment on the policy, then please make any responses to the school by Friday 8th July. Parent consultation evenings will remain online next year. Term Dates 2022/23 and 2023/24 - These academic term dates are available on the school website There are lots of events coming up over the next few weeks, including some of my favourites; Year 10 Careers week (Monday 4th- Thursday 7th), KS3 Challenge and Enrichment Showcase (Tuesday 12th July), the Sports Awards Evening and Sports Day (Friday 15h July). It is wonderful to see these events back on the school calendar, which offer enrichment and enjoyment to so many students. I have included a list of the key upcoming events below:

Lastly, please can I ask for your support in ensuring that students go straight home after school and do not congregate at the station area or in front of Sainsbury’s. I totally appreciate that the vast majority are just meeting friends and are very respectful of the local community, but a handful are letting us all down. For safety reasons, the station area is not the most desirable place for students to be hanging around. I think it must also be appreciated that even when the students are being respectful, a large group of teenagers can be intimidating to certain groups in the local community. We have very supportive parents and I know that the majority will speak to their children about this matter. The school will take action against those individuals who do bring the school’s good name into disrepute. Thank you all for your continued support. I really hope you enjoy the rest of this bulletin and celebrations of student achievement. Mrs Jenner

Year 7 It is really hard to believe that there are only three more weeks to go until the end of the academic year. We only have three weeks left. It's hard to believe that they are about to finish Year 7 and embark on Year 8. With that in mind if you have any pre-loved uniform that you could donate to the school we would appreciate it. It is also still an expectation that students will wear the correct full uniform until the end of the school year. Should we have another day of exceptional heat, please keep your eyes open for a message from the Head, where she will say if we are going to 'relax' the uniform. There are a number of dates that you need to be made aware of over the next few weeks: 

Monday 11th year 7 will be off all day to take part in a Community Language and Culture Day. Details to follow.

Sports' Day is the 15th July, it is lovely to see so many students eager to sign up for different events.

The last day of term is Friday 22nd July

I would like to thank and congratulate four members of the Year group for the way they spoke to our prospective Year 7 Parents on the transition evening.

Evie Twyford

Charlotte Williamson

Thomas Barnes

Aditya Brahmbhatt.

As always, if you need to contact me, please don't hesitate to ask. Mr Ryan – Year 7 Progress Leader

Uncollected Stationary Please can we ask all parents / carers that have purchased stationary for their children to remind them to collect it from our Resources centre as we have a lot of stationary pack uncollected.

Congratulations to Matthew Sutton in Year 7 who claimed 3rd place in the javelin with a distance of 23m at the Year 7 Essex County Schools Athletics Championships on Wednesday at Melbourne Park, Chelmsford. He was representing The West Essex and Harlow district on behalf of Roding Valley High School. Fantastic achievement Matthew, well done from all the PE

Year 9 As we finish off another two busy weeks, I have started to put together our final celebration assembly. I can't wait to celebrate all the hard work and achievements that we have all made over the past 12 months. The emails have started coming in thick and fast from various different staff members wanting to acknowledge the efforts of so many Year 9's. It is something that I look forward to every year, and I really do hope we can celebrate as many of you as possible. Please do look out for our next bulletin where we will publish all of these wonderful achievements. We had a large number of Year 9 students representing RVHS at the District Athletics competition at Ashton playing fields today. I can't wait to hear about how each of our athletes faired and if any of them have reached the next round of competitions. The PE department have informed me that all the students competed to the best of their abilities and represented the school wonderfully. I look forward to celebrating some of these students, as well as many others at our annual Sports Awards evening coming up. Please do look out for an invite to this evening if your child has participated in two or more school sports teams. I want to thank the dedicated Year 9 students who helped out with the Year 6 transition evening last week. These students gave up their personal time to come back to school and make the evening the great success that it was. We really do have a wonderful group of students in Year 9, and this just goes to show how willing they are to go the extra mile. Thank you and a massive well done. Going into the final three weeks of this academic year, I just want to reiterate that nothing changes. We still maintain the very high standards we have regarding our uniform, our behaviour and our conduct in the community. Don't let yourself down by dropping the ball in these last remaining weeks. Keep up the hard work, and finish off on a high! Miss Edwards – Year 9 Progress Leader

Year 9 Science This week, our Year 9 Triple Science students learnt about the working of the heart, with practical involving dissection of a heart with Miss Hodges and Mr Miah.

Year 10 End of Year Summer exams Year 10 has had a really busy fortnight of end of year exams and I would like to congratulate the vast majority of students who demonstrated impeccable conduct throughout the exam period. Despite being a challenging and stressful 2 weeks, it will hopefully act as valuable exam experience to help all our students cope with the demands of their final GCSE year from September.

Careers Week: Monday 4th July - Thursday 7th July inclusive On Monday, Year 10 embark on a busy Careers Week where they will be given the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of employment sessions as well as experiencing a 'real life' day at work and enjoying a taster day at either College or Sixth Form. Mrs Mason has done an enormous amount of work planning what is an excellent 4 days of activities that will hopefully inspire our Year 10 students to begin to plan beyond Year 11 and into the future. Throughout the week there will be a whole host of external visitors in attendance and we hope the students enjoy the week and become more informed about what lies ahead in their educational journey. The plan for the week is as follows: Monday 4th July: Post 16 Options Opportunities Careers Week will be launched in P1 at registration time. It is vital all students are in attendance as all the information and resources for this day and the rest of the week will be issued to students at this time. For today, students will remain in tutor groups and rotate around the following sessions: ‐ Interview techniques in preparation for Mock Interview ‐ Choosing A levels/BTECS researching university (Comps) ‐ College Applications (Personal Statements) ‐ Apprenticeships (AIM Group) ‐ Medical Mavericks Tuesday 5th July: Take Your Child to Work Day The majority of students will be involved in a 'Take Your Child to Work Day'. This will hopefully give students an insight into what the 'real world of work is like'. For the few students who are not able to participate in a day at work they will be expected in school where they will be involved in the activities listed below; ‐ Different employment sectors ‐ Team building exercises ‐ Skills Builder Wednesday 6th July - Mock Interview Day This is a normal school day and students attend in business dress. If they do not have business dress, please do not go and buy especially for the day as school uniform will be perfectly acceptable. Students will only come out of one lesson for their mock interview with an external business person from a variety of different companies This is held in the school hall. Mrs Mason has spent a long time arranging this day so please arrive in good time. Thursday 7th July – Post 16 Taster Day. NCC Epping Forest Campus taster day. Full details have been emailed to parents by Mrs Mason. OR A Level taster day at RVHS: Students will have the opportunity to attend a 'taster' lesson in their chosen A Level/BTEC subject Friday 8th July – Normal School Day

Final few weeks Can I stress that in the final two weeks of term as a Year group there is going to be a big push on two key issues; 

Dress code - No rolled skirts, no trainers, shirts always tucked in and ties on, no beaded hair and excessive jewellery as per the school rules. The purpose behind this strive for improved appearance is that Year 10 are currently the most senior students in school and as such we are asking them politely to dress appropriately in order to act as role models for lower school pupils. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all those students who dress correctly each and every day.

Punctuality - Careers Week will undoubtedly incorporate the importance of being on time and as a school Roding Valley is trying to prepare our students for the world of work where being on time is a crucial aspect of employment. As such we expect students to be in school and to lessons on time.

I wish you a relaxing weekend, enjoy the nice weather. Mr Fletcher – Year 10 Progress Leader

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to our Finance Department at finance@rodingvalley.net

Within a school community there will be students who have allergies some mild whilst others can be more severe and potentially life threatening. With the above in mind we would like to ask you to remind your child(ren) to always ask our canteen staff if they are unsure what ingredients have been used. Also, please ensure if your child has any known allergies we are made aware so we can support them in school and if required hold medication in school. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact Mrs Gladman via sgladman@rodingvalley.net

The Youth Makes Art biennial exhibition took place at St John’s Church, Epping on 17 June. The competition is organised by Epping Rotary Club and every education establishment in the area presents their best work. Roding Valley enters this competition every time and we have always been outstandingly successful, on previous occasions lifting nearly all of the senior prizes! I’m pleased to say that this year was no different! Of the eight main prizes our students collected four of them (and a fifth went to a former GCSE student!) Many thanks to all of the students whose work I entered, every entry receives a sketchbook from the judges. In addition, the following students won main prizes, including a certificate and cash prizes. This is outstanding recognition of our wonderful, talented artists and for the amazing teaching from Mr. Baidoo and Miss Kalair!

On Thursday 23rd June, our new Year 7 cohort and their parents were invited to our annual Transition Evening event. The evening was a tremendous success, starting with a meet and greet, where parents had the opportunity to meet some of the teachers their children will have in September, followed by the Headteacher’s presentation. The presentation included some of our current Year 7 students describing their first year at RVHS, a talk from our newly appointed Head Boy and Head Girl and a performance by some of our Drama Students. The Year 6 students were also able to participate, if an activity of their choice – with offerings from Science, Drama, PE and Art.

On Friday 24th June, our new cohort of Year 7 had their Transition Day. They had an amazing day experiencing secondary life, giving them a taste of some of the lessons they will have in September. We look forward to seeing them in September!

Wednesday 29th of June was a really lovely day with our year 11 students. We started early with the leavers assembly - students looked smart and excited, grabbed their leavers books and started signing shirts. Our final assembly was filled with celebrations and successes, we were all delighted to be entertained by Caleb Beer's outstanding performance - for which he got a well-deserved standing ovation! congratulations to the bronze Duke of Edinburgh winners, students had voted in some year group nominations for awards and so we had a number of winners with highlights such as class joker, most likely to win the lottery and lose the ticket, funniest laugh, most likely to take over the world and so many more! Students cheered and supported one another and many of the staff who attended commented on how lovely the year group is. At 7pm we arrived at the Prom, our students looked absolutely amazing and really threw themselves into the celebrations. Everyone behaved impeccably and we were all incredibly proud of the way that they conducted themselves. This year's Prom king and queen were Caleb Beer and Bronya Overington as chosen by the year group. We are so very proud of our year 11's and wish them much happiness, success and fulfilments in their future journeys and look forward to seeing those attending sixth form on the 2nd of September.

Year 12 Gold Duke of Edinburgh Expedition Fourteen Year 12 students, accompanied by two members of staff, embarked on their DofE Gold Practice Expedition from 20th to 24th June 2022. It was a wonderful learning experience for all the students as they put into practice the various skills they had been learning which included camp craft, cooking, orienteering and map skills. A very enjoyable and tiring expedition for all which required resilience and physical and mental strength.

On 17th June our Year 12 have a fantastic day on their Ecology practical with Miss Hodges

Continued... Today our politics class had an exciting and enriching opportunity. We got the opportunity to work closely with the politics project and Lord McNicol of West Kilbride in an interesting Q and A. Lord McNicol was wonderful to question, giving excited and enthusiastic answers from his ideas of reform all the way to his opinion on the decline of ministerial standards. He also gave the opportunity by asking us our thoughts as a class and in turn a flowing discussion was had. It was a pleasure to learn from such a senior past Labour Politician and a current Lord.

Lewis Choules - Deputy Head Boy - Year 12 Politics Student

Bedrock Update!! As many of you may know, at RVHS we now use an online, interactive literacy tool called 'Bedrock'. Bedrock is a tool that helps to improve our students Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary and improve their application of these new words. This week, our students have had a virtual assembly based on the importance of this tool. If you want to look at the assembly, please click here. During Term 1, Ms Bleakley and I also did a live-streamed parent's workshop on Bedrock. If you missed this, and want to watch the recording, please click on the links below:

1

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

2

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

3

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

4 5 6 7 8

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first. Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website. Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to. Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
