1530pts
Welcome to the final ‘bumper packed’ Parent Bulletin of this academic year, it is full of student activities, achievements and celebrations. I would like to take the opportunity, on behalf of all the staff and governors, to thank you for your continued support of the school. Your children have been excellent this year and embraced every opportunity presented. I have been incredibly proud to see the school return to a full complement of extra-curricular activities, including some residential trips; the staff have worked tirelessly in support of your children. I am very proud of the staff that we have at the school and am delighted that amidst a national teacher shortage, we remain fully staffed for September. School closes tomorrow, Friday 22nd July at 12.20pm for students. Friday will be a non-uniform day - a charitable donation can be made via parent pay. Usual expectations around appropriate clothing apply. Students can choose to continue to wear their PE kit. These are the affiliated charities chosen by each House.

Year 7 Intake September 2022 I would like to welcome all Year 7 parents and students to their first RVHS bulletin. This is sent out on a fortnightly basis and highlights all the fantastic events taking place and celebrating student success. I hope Y6 students are enjoying their last few days at Primary School and are looking forward to starting their journey here with us at Roding Valley in September.
Welcome to RVHS
Our transition events have been a huge success and it has been a pleasure to meet lots of parents and students. Our Summer School begins on Monday 25th July which will be a great experience for students to meet staff and new friends, explore subjects and have fun! All parents should now have received their Welcome Booklet which states the house your son/daughter is in. If you have not received this information, please email ahollis@rodingvalley.net . In preparation for September, please ensure students have the correct equipment which should include a reading book and a pencil case with the relevant resources. A reminder that students were given a Transition Workbook at their testing day which they should complete over the summer break, alternatively you can access the booklet by clicking here. Should you have any queries, please email hreed@rodingvalley.net . I ask parents that have not already done so to please ensure that you complete our Online Parent and Student Information Form as this will ensure that your child’s start is a smooth one. The link to this form is contained in your Welcome Booklet and we have also included it again below: https://forms.gle/PK1MGN6ut63VcJKM6 Finally, I would like to wish everyone a lovely summer break and I look forward to meeting you all on Friday 2nd September.
Miss Reed – Year 7 Progress Leader 2022

Year 7 We have completed Year 7! It's been a truly remarkable year and I think the students have done incredibly well. The transition from Primary to Secondary School is always quite daunting and I think the year group adapted incredibly well. They have settled into their Academic Mentor groups and lessons well. The Academic Mentors have really struggled to nominate tutees for the End of Year Awards. Over the year, the students have had the opportunity to participate in many different activities and trips. We hope to continue this in Year 8. The students have been to the theatre, to Manchester to watch the football, The Natural History Museum and many other Challenge and Enrichment activities. We have many more exciting opportunities coming up in Year 8 and I look forward to the students experiencing as many of these wider activities as possible. Last week was the first Roding Valley High School, Sports' Day and it was brilliant to see the students participate and represent their House teams. Everyone behaved incredibly well and it was such a lovely day. I am really impressed with the sporting ability in the year group from athletics to football and Netball. I hope the teams can build on their successes in the future. As it is the summer holidays I hope that everyone takes the opportunity to unwind and relax. I look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for Year 8.
Mr Ryan – Year 7 Progress Leader
Year 8 It is hard to believe we have come to the end of another year! What a year it has been! The opportunities that our Year 8 students seize each day always makes me so proud. We have had a busy last couple of weeks, with the change to vertical forms to build into the Sports Day Inter House competition. Despite the scorching hot weather, every single Year 8 contributed to the best of their ability which made for an amazing day. I am sure you have all heard about it With our celebration assembly coming on Friday, I don't want to announce the students that have achieved the whole year Year Progress Leader Award or the Head teachers award, which I look forward to awarding in the celebration assembly on Friday to round the year off nicely. We are heading into a very important year in September where the students will be leading to make their option choices, it is essential that every lesson the students are working to their potential to ensure progress towards the GCSE content of the subjects is being met. I hope you all have the most amazing summer and get to spend time with all of your loved ones after what has been a turbulent couple of years. Make lots of memories and I cannot wait to hear all about them. Please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you all back in September.
Miss Fazakerley – Year 8 Progress Leader
Year 9 Since our last bulletin, Year 9 have been extremely busy. We have seen our students attend the Wyndham's theatre to watch Life of Pi, they have played in a friendly football match against the Year 10 team, taking the win 6-4, participated and won awards at the Challenge & Enrichment showcase, competed at Sports Day, participated in a rewards afternoon and celebrated a year's worth of hard work in our end of year celebration assembly. I have included many of the student awards from our celebration assembly at the tail of this passage. Of particular note, I would like acknowledge Hannah Salmon, who was awarded the Headteacher’s Award and Khrystyna Semaniv and Bailey Arkley for being awarded the YPL award. Well done to each and every student who has been recognised for their hard work. As we move into the new school year, your child's uniform may need adjusting. Many skirts are now too short and shirts too small to tuck in. Please can I remind you about the high expectations that we have around uniform and these must be met when your child returns in September. Our full uniform policy is available on the website should you need further guidance. I would also like to encourage you to donate any pre loved uniform back to the school so that other families can take advantage of a more affordable option. When we return in September, Mr Dobson will be YPL for Year 10. His email address is cdobson@rodingvalley.net. Please direct any queries and concerns to him. However, I will still be supporting with the year group so you can continue to reach out to me should you need to. I look forward to continuing the positive relationships I have with many families and continue working with your wonderful children. I am however starting a new role as an Associate Assistant Headteacher which I am very much looking forward to. I look forward to welcoming all our Year 10's back to school on Monday 5th September by 8.25am. They will remain in their current forms, but will receive a new timetable. Have an enjoyable summer and enjoy spending some quality time together. Miss Edwards– Year 9 Progress Leader
In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to our Finance Department at finance@rodingvalley.net
Year 10 Year 10 students have been involved in a wide range of careers, employment and enterprise activities in the past week or so and the bulletin will no doubt reflect the fabulous range of sessions that they have been involved in over the past two weeks.
Careers Week. The Careers Week was a fantastic opportunity for all Year 10 students to immerse themselves in a variety of employment and post 16 opportunities as they look forward to their next steps in their educational journey. Throughout the bulletin this week there are photos of the mock interviews, taster day sessions at Sixth Form and New City College as well other Careers Week activities such as Interview techniques, choosing A levels/BTECS, researching university, college applications and personal statements, apprenticeships, and sessions with an external organisation called Medical Mavericks. All this as well as the opportunity to experience the 'world of work' in the 'Take Your Child to Work Day'. In short the 4 days were packed full of lots of valuable sessions that we hope the students found interesting and useful. A particular mention should go out to all those students who took part in mock interviews with external business people who put our students through a real life work interview. The feedback from our guest interviews was fantastic, comments such as, 'the student was a credit to the school', 'I have offered the student work experience as they were so impressive' and 'the student was that good I offered them a job!' This feedback is so positive, so well done to all!! A huge thank you and well done to Mrs Mason (Careers Advisor) who has put so much hard work and organisation into ensuring the Careers Week was so successful.
Enterprise Day Year 10 took part in an 'Enterprise Day' on Tuesday 12th July. They were involved in team building exercises, problem solving and a Stock Market Challenge led by an external group. The day was highly successful and extremely interactive and we hope the students enjoyed the day.
Intervention lessons A reminder to students and parents that intervention subject lessons will remain in place till the end of term to support the students further and prepare them well for the beginning of Year 11. The lessons are vital in securing foundation knowledge and skills in preparation for their final GCSE year.
Summer Tasks Whilst it is important to enjoy a break from school and relax over the holiday period it is also a good opportunity to get prepared for Year 11. September to Christmas next term is extremely busy so if students have time over the summer to organise their work, prepare cue cards and revision notes for their Year 10 work that could prove really useful. In addition, it could be a great opportunity to begin researching post 16 courses, either A Levels at Sixth Form or A Levels/BTECs at College. If applications could be started and drafted out that would be hugely beneficial as these will need to be submitted to Sixth Form and/or colleges by Christmas.
Mr Fletcher – Year 10 Progress Leader
The last few weeks have been jam packed with exciting events across Years 10 - 13. It has been a real pleasure to share in these events with students and work with students both as they leave us to go on to new exciting adventures and thinking about welcoming our next cohorts of students. I want to say a huge well done to our current Year 12s who have spent the last few weeks preparing to go into Year 13. They have been preparing CVs, writing personal statements, having careers meetings and starting Year 13 content in their subjects. They are such a great year group and have done fantastically this year. Next week Year 12 are on work shadowing placements to gain an insight in their chosen pathways and gain some experience and transferable skills in the wider community. Placements include BGC, Willmott Dixon, Bank of Beirut, Stevenage Football Club, London Metal Exchange, Peak Wildlife Park, Essex Police and many more. Well done to all those who have secured a placement! As a parent, if you are able to offer RVHS Sixth Formers a work shadowing placement at your place of work in the future, please do contact sixthformoffice@rodingvalley.net It was lovely to celebrate the end of Year 12 with a BBQ and bring students together one last time before they head off for the summer. I wish them well for the summer and look forward to seeing them in September.
Year 11-12 Transition Day - 1st July It was fantastic to welcome year 11 back into school as sixth formers and give them one final chance to try out their subject choices in preparation for enrolling with us in August. All students who plan to join us should now be enrolled in our whole cohort Google Classroom -ta5fw2g and will have access to the summer transition work they need to complete over the summer. Enrolment will take place on results day once students have picked up their GCSE results. If students have any questions in the meantime, please do contact us at sixthformoffice@rodingvalley.net
RVHS Year 13 Prom 2022 Year 13 celebrated their time at RVHS on 5th July and it was really lovely to share this with them. Having missed out on a year 11 prom as this fell during the midst of Covid, this year group celebrated in style and we are sorry to see them go! They have such exciting futures ahead of them and we look forward to sharing in their successes on results day.
Good luck Year 13 with all your future endeavours!!
Year 9 ‘Life of Pi’ Theatre Trip On Thursday 7th July, some of our Year 9 students went on an epic journey to see the Life of Pi. With outstanding stage effects, astounding animal puppets and an emotional story that showed them both a physical and mental fight for survival – it was as if they were really transported to the Pacific Ocean with Pi and the exotic Bengal tiger. Our students were engrossed in the mystery and tension the story provided – this seemed to be a hit with our Year 9 students!
Year 8 ‘Wicked’ Theatre Trip On Wednesday 6th July, some of our year 8 students journeyed into London – not quite on a yellow brick road – to see the magical production of Wicked. They experienced spell binding songs, beautiful costumes and the rollercoaster friendship between Glinda and Elphaba. After such a thrilling visit, they have definitely been defying gravity this week with all the excitement! A huge well done to our students for their impeccable behaviour throughout the trip. Keep an eye out for future trips in the next academic year – we’d love for our students to continue experiencing the live action stories the theatre can provide.
2022 Friday 15th July saw the return of Sports Day at Roding Valley. With some new events added in for students, it turned out to be a brilliant day of athletics and inter house competition. The format of the day remained the same as previous years before Covid with each year group making their way to PE to complete in the field events (long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, javelin and high jump) and the long and middle distance track events (1500m and 800m) in their morning lessons and then competing in the sprint track events, tug of war and the new events bean bag toss, darts high score and Wellie Wanging in the afternoon, in front of the whole school. In each event students are allowed a maximum of two boys and two girls with 10 House points on offer for the winning student in each event. The afternoon's tug of war competition saw combined year group teams battle it out. The eventual winners in a very competitive competition led by Miss Edwards were, Rendell who retained their tug of war title from 2019. On the day a total of 19 new Sports Day records were created by our students. Year 10 with something to prove to the school and to leave a legacy created the most new records with 10 records. Year 7 created seven new records, with Year 8 creating four new records and Year 9 set six new records on another record breaking Sports Day. The school's Year 12 students are an integral part of the day as they help select the teams for each house in all the events in the weeks leading up to Sports Day and also help officiate, score and record on the day alongside the PE Department. The annual Year 12 relay race to reward the sixth form for their great effort and support on the day was back, with the winners being Rendell in a tightly contested race.
Murray dominated the new activities that were staffed by other departments from the school, winning the bean bag toss, Wellie Wanging and the darts high score. This accrued a huge 150 House points to their Sports Day total on the day.
The last event of the day and a big favourite of the students saw the Staff inter house relay race. Excitement was building prior to the day and all afternoon from students and staff alike for this race, and it didn’t disappoint. This event really caught the student’s imagination as they lined the finishing straight to witness members of staff compete for their house in the final event of the day, with Hawking house led home by Mr Maagbe retaining their honours of winning the Roding Valley Staff race from 2019.
An assembly followed on Tuesday 19th July to reveal the results and overall winner of sports for which Churchill retained their Sports Day title for a 3rd consecutive year with a total of 1267 points. Well done Churchill! Mr Allen – Head of PE

We would like everyone to our 3rd online Art and Photography exhibition. Usually we would present all of the student's work in a large exhibition in school, however, we have had to find new ways to celebrate the success of our hard working, talented artists. You will find a selection of the work from our Year 11 GCSE classes and our A Level students for 2022. The pieces you can see are a selection of coursework and exam units of work from every student. These images are just a tiny snapshot of the work they complete, as prior to this the students will have filled a huge preparatory sketchbook with research, experimentations, ideas development and proposals based on a chosen theme. Each of these pieces are a personal and meaningful response to the theme and not only show some incredible drawing, painting and photographic skills, but also show deep understanding and meaning.
You can visit our Online Gallery either via our school website or using this link. We are pleased to say that we have explored a new idea in the art department this year and we can now offer any piece of work from the Online Exhibition for sale!
If you are interested, please leave a comment beside the chosen piece of work in the exhibition and we will get in contact with you.
We can place orders for professional prints at A1 poster size for only £20.
Congratulations our Year 9 Art students for their amazing work in in the style of illustrator Andrea's Preis.
Our Year 12 science students had the opportunity to attend the Royal Society summer exhibition. They had a careers talk and got the opportunity to talk to lots of different researchers about the career and research.
On Tuesday 12th July Year 10 took part in Enterprise Day. The day consisted of 3 sessions, Problem Solving Team working Stock Market Challenge All students really enjoyed the day and participated well in all activities. Year 10 particularly enjoyed the Stock Market Challenge where they needed to invest £15000 into 10 different businesses. Well done to the winning groups led by Alfie Paddington and Marcel Zgarden who raised £64000 and £143000 respectively. Also, special mention to Georgia Baker who was student of the day. Some student quotes from the day... Eliza White - 'Great day, loved it - can we have another enterprise day in year 11' Will Foot - 'the stock market was really good and would have liked it to be longer'
YEAR 10
S
WEEK
Students in Year 10 have spent the week participating in activities to help them with their future choices. They participated in a carousel of lessons that included: CVs, Interview techniques, Apprenticeships, College Applications and qualifications, researching A levels and university options. They had an inspirational visit from Medical Mavericks where they heard about the 350 roles in the NHS as well as participating in some hands-on medical practices. 180 students took part in a take your child to work day. Students who were unable to participate in the take your child to work day had a live meeting with Pathways CTM and Telford Homes where they found out about degree apprenticeships in the construction professions.
Pathways CTM offer a whole range of insight events for parents and work experience for students they are really worth investigating https://pathwayctm.com/events/ . They also took part in a work experience lesson and team building exercises. On Wednesday 6th July we held our Mock Interview day and welcomed employers, governors and careers advisors to Roding Valley. Employers Lawlors represented: Galliard Homes Bank of England Active Recruitment KPMG Andersons Group Construction HS2 OMD Media Hill Kase Care Telford Homes CBRE Students participated in a mock interview and received feedback and advice about future interviews. Comments from interviewers included: 'They are a credit to the school' ' I would employ them' 'they were very well prepared' Our Taster Day on Thursday 6th July gave students the option to stay in school and try A level courses or to attend the local college and try out some courses there. 45 students chose to spend a day at New City College Epping Forest Campus. It was a fantastic day organised by NCC. Students participated in courses they are considering in the future, it gave them a real insight into T Levels and BTECs as well as the many vocational courses on offer.
On Monday 11th July, our Year 7 students participated in a Community Language Day. They had a fantastic day learning new languages such as Russian, Arabic, German, Algerian, Twi, Gujarati, Greek, Italian, Azeri and Mandarin. We would like to thank all of the staff and Sixth Form students that made this day so special.
Year 8 French Celebration Breakfast To celebrate our EAL students hard work and achievement of this past academic year, Miss Lasfer treated them all to a celebratory Continental breakfast, the students were also presented with a certificate marking their achievement by the Headteacher Mrs Jenner.
On Tuesday, our Year 8 students took part in a cooking class where they had to prepare a traditional Spanish tortilla (it was for students doing Spanish). During this event, they worked collaboratively in pairs and produced some really nice tortillas. Before they made the dish, they learnt about the story of tortilla.
Our students had the fantastic opportunity to visit the Transport Museum, where they completed an engineering challenge and they had to plan changes to a town to make it more environmentally friendly, managing a budget and explaining why they would make the changes they did. They even built models of their new train stations and made posters to promote it. After completing the challenge, they interviewed two different types of engineer who work for TFL and had a tour of the depot.
Creative Writing Club has entered its third year at Roding Valley High School and we have finally had an undisrupted year of amazing creative writing! The previous two years consisted of lockdowns, Google Classroom interactions and brilliant students who supported each other through a tough time – even when they couldn’t physically be together – but we have now had a year where we could share our enthusiasm for creative writing in a more traditional way. As fantastic as our students were through lockdown at producing exciting creative stories, it has been such a delight to be able to meet up properly and share interesting story ideas. Every Monday lunchtime, our dedicated Creative Writers have been working tirelessly to produce the incredible work enclosed in this booklet. Their passion for writing, their endless imagination and the pure joy they brought to every session has been infectious resulting in more and more students joining our Creative Writing team. From September to now, the development in their writing has been astounding and I know you will experience a rollercoaster of emotions as you read through this collection of their work. It has been an absolute delight to host Creative Writing Club – what an amazing way to start the week! To the students who have been a part of it this year, thank you for making every session fun and full of laughter. I can’t wait to see you again in September and see how your writing continues to develop. To anyone who would like to get involved, we would love for you to join us next year and show off your Creative Writing talents
Congratulations to our KS3 students for putting together most amazing House Themed board for Sports Day, to get in to the House Spirit

Accelerated Reader With Miss Woods After a year of amazing reading by our fabulous year 7 students, they have devoured hundreds of books and totalled a staggering 114,962,931 words read, as a year group, for this academic year – what an incredible achievement! Seeing our brilliant students being so focused on their reading and discussing their books has been delightful – some of our students have been so devoted to their reading they are now ‘Millionaire Readers’. They have managed to read a million words (or more) which is outstanding. A special shout out goes to Bethany Clayton who has read the most words in the entire year group with an incredible 10,720,376 words – our very own ‘Matilda’ it seems! We are so proud of our Year 7 students; you have made an incredible start to your Roding Valley journey, and we can’t wait to see all your new achievements in the next academic year. Keep up your excellent reading over the summer – why not attempt some of our summer challenges below?

Current House Points Totals At RVHS we have long had a house system that aims to develop a sense of camaraderie and identity which supports students to transition from stage to stage. One of the main strengths of the House system is giving students of all ages the opportunity to work together, creating a truly cohesive environment and ensuring that age is no barrier to friendship and collaboration. This reflects the life that we are preparing students for outside of RVHS, nowhere beyond the confines of a classroom will students be required to work/interact with those only of their own age. It also allows for healthy competition, it drives our young people to improve and it teaches them how to fail. The House system also allows for the promotion of student’s responsibility, “giving all students the chance to learn and develop leadership skills is an outstanding benefit”. Last week we introduced vertical House forms to our House system to help build the atmosphere for sports day. We had a great week where students had the opportunity to mix with students across all stages of the 7year RVHS journey. It was lovely to see students building the confidence to mix with some of our older students, building positive relationships and truly getting to know their wider school community. As part of the week, we had students doing ‘get to know each other’ tasks, quizzes, environmental campaigns and creating banners and chants to help support the athletes on sports day. The feedback from students has been really positive. What a way to end a great year of progress, growth, celebration and success. Congratulations to all athletes that competed and a special congratulation to Churchill House who won sports day by achieving the most points. The sports day shield will be engraved to celebrate the achievement. I want to say a massive well done to all students who, in some way, have been involved in house activities this year! Below are the final house points from all of the aforementioned competitions. A BIG well done to Hawking House for gaining the most House points across the year! The House cup will be engraved to celebrate your achievements this year.
Congratulations to all of our students who entered our House Photography Competition this past academic year. The quality of entries has been so amazing that we thought we would share the results and you can enjoy looking at their work as much as we did.

Within a school community there will be students who have allergies some mild whilst others can be more severe and potentially life threatening. With the above in mind we would like to ask you to remind your child(ren) to always ask our canteen staff if they are unsure what ingredients have been used. Also, please ensure if your child has any known allergies we are made aware so we can support them in school and if required hold medication in school. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact Mrs Gladman via sgladman@rodingvalley.net

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
3
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
4
5
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
6
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
7
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
8
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
