RVHS Bulletin Weekending Friday 23rd October 2020
Message from the Headteacher

All things considered, it has been a very ‘normal’ half term in school. Students have been fantastic and I am incredibly proud of the staff and the quality of the education being delivered amidst very difficult circumstances. This week we experienced our first student positive COVID cases and a member of staff has also now tested positive. In each case, we have been able to identify the close contacts and return the remaining students to school. All students and staff who were identified as close contacts are now self-isolating for 14 days. This is a sharp reminder of increasing transmission in the area, reflected in the higher COVID alert tier in Essex and how important it is that we all adhere to the safety guidelines that we have in school.

A reminder of our safety procedures can be found on our website. I am grateful for your support as this has enabled us to keep the school open and operational at all times during this half term. Please do ensure that your son/ daughter has a face covering with them every day as it is now expected that everyone will wear a face covering when in indoor communal areas. Letter High Alert After half term, we will have to charge a £1 on parent pay for any masks provided. If you are finding it difficult to provide a face covering for your child each day, then please do contact your Year Progress Leader and we can provide support in this matter. If you are facing any financial hardship at this present time then please do contact us as we can offer assistance concerning uniform, PPE and other curriculum resources. I have asked to promote ‘3food4u.org’ community support organisation, you can find details with the bulletin.

Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Year 13’s had an amazing time completing their Gold Duke of Edinburgh practice assessment in Welwyn Garden City. Due to the current climate they had a lot of barriers to overcome, which they did fantastically. Our expedition providers stated that they were ‘incredible students to work with’. Meeting them at each checkpoint their positivity never ceased to amaze me, consistently showing our school communities values. The endeavour they showed throughout the week was incredible and has made me extremely excited to aid them to complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh assessment throughout half term.

Hi Parents & Carers, Thank you for being so supportive of our home learning programme at RVHS. As you're already aware, teachers will set home learning tasks to do after lesson content that has been taught in school. These are compulsory tasks for ALL students and set as 'assignments'. They need to be submitted via Google Classroom. For more help on this, click on the YouTube links below, where I explain how to do this. For students who are Self-Isolating and unable to come to school, our teachers are also using Google Classroom to post Lesson Material. This lesson material contains all of the resources of what was taught in class during the week; meaning that no student will miss out! You may also wish to encourage your son/daughter to explore the fantastic resource that is the Google Drive. Google Drive is connected to Google Classroom - and all of our students have access to it. Your son/daughter can use Google docs or Google slides to complete their home learning and easily access it in the future. If you would like more direction with Google Drive, please click on the second link- this was also shown to all students last week. Thank you again for your continued support of home learning at RVHS. If you have any questions or would like any help, please contact me on: plarkin@rodingvalley.net Google Classroom Support: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OF7bXnGLNy0&t=3s Google Drive Support: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nE_d2TYwP5A&feature=youtu.be

Year 7 Firstly, I would like to congratulate Year 7 students on completing their first half term with us here at RVHS. Pupils have adapted immensely with the transition from Primary to Secondary School as well as familiarising themselves with the 'new normal' procedures around school. On Thursday 22nd October, we delivered our first celebration assembly of the year, which was a great opportunity for us to celebrate all the amazing things Y7 have been doing over the first half term. Awards received included students with the top ARE points, 100% attendance awards, Academic Mentor awards, Year Progress Leader awards and finally the Headteachers award which was announced by Mrs Jenner and awarded to Brandon Bale. A huge well done to all the award winners and I look forward to announcing new winners next term. 1
Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.
2
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
3
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
4 5
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
6
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
7
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
8
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/ 14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/ Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried. You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents.
