“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
RVHS Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Weekending Friday 24th April 2020 Message from the Headteacher I really hope that everyone is keeping safe and my thoughts are with all in our community, especially those families and staff who have been so sadly effected by the virus. The school may be closed to the majority but can I reiterate that we remain committed to the welfare and support of all our students during this time. Please do contact us if you need more support or guidance during this time. I hope you have received my letter which was emailed to all parents and students on Friday 17th April, providing an update to the current situation. Letter Headteacher. This letter also drew your attention to the following important and useful documents, which the school has written to support your child’s Home learning: Updated Home Learning Booklet The Students Quick Guide to Using Google Classroom RVHS Guidance to Home Learning Timetable – practical advice on timing expectations Parent guidance and support If you did not receive this communication, please visit our school website, you will find a link to website to all of these documents. We will be sending home additional advice to our Year 11s next week, which will include transition work towards A Level study as appropriate. Please also note that the government has this week launched the following learning platforms, Oak National Academy - https://www.thenational.academy/ and BBC Bitesize Daily lessons Your child should continue to follow the guidelines set by the school but I have asked teachers to incorporate resources into the work being set. However, these platforms have some great additional resources that can be used at home. We have now started our welfare checks on students so you should expect to hear from the school within the next week. As part of this initial process, all students will have received (by Friday 24.4.2020) an email with a student survey for them to complete. This survey is aimed at helping us monitor student well-being and judge how students are adapting to this different way of life. This survey will help us with supporting our students moving forward. Please encourage your child to complete the survey as soon as possible (it will only take 2 minutes!) Currently, we have not been provided with any information as to when schools will be reopening, but I will keep you updated as soon as I am aware of any changes by government.
@rodingvalleyhs
With the current situation, it is becoming increasingly important to consider your mental health; some of us are lucky enough to have gardens where we can sit outside, enjoy the sun and the fresh air, but there are some that are not so lucky. I would therefore recommend that it is worth checking in on your friends more frequently, either by phoning them, dropping them an email or message them on social media; you could also set up a Zoom meeting with them to ensure that they are okay. We have continued to include within this bulletin; guidance and tips on mental wellbeing, useful links to physical activities and how you can access platforms that support ‘new’ learning. Please do continue to refer to our Home Learning booklet for your child’s Google Classroom codes, our Google classrooms are being updated by your child’s teachers continuously. Please do keep safe and well Mrs. Sharon Jenner - Headteacher

Congratulations to Louisa Nicholson (Year 7), who has managed to get through to the next round of BBC Radio 2's 500 Words Creative Writing Competition. She is now in the final 5,000 out of 135,000 entries, which is fantastic! Fingers crossed she will be in the final 50 in May, but this is already such an achievement! It was January. The cold wind whipped my hair around, and brushed against my skin like a rough brick wall. I was sitting on a hard, icy bench. I sat there, thinking and watching the world. January was my least favourite month, not because of the cold. Not because it was meant to snow, but never did. Not because you couldn't run around, have picnics and play with your friends and nothing bad ever happened. No. It's January, and that means Veganuary. A law that only applies during January. I was a very picky eater, and cheese and meat and fish was the only protein I got. So I'm sitting there, my skin thin like paper, my ribs sticking out. I was so hungry. "No, darling," a passing mother said to her whining child. "You can't eat meat, of course you can't. You shall get killed if you drink that milk! Now, we don't want that, do we?" The toddler continued whining. I saw a passing man. He looked around carefully. I hid my face with my scarf. He looked into his pocket and secretively produced something, hiding it with his coat. It looked as if he was... eating something. Some Policemen walked slowly behind him, staring at his back. He suddenly reached out and grabbed his neck. "Hey..." he said, clenching his teeth. "Oh, hello Officer," he said as cheerfully as he could. “Great day we're havi-" He was interrupted by the Policeman, who had his hand around the man's mouth. "Now listen," he said with fire in his eyes. "It's January." "Veganuary," the man said, his voice slightly muffled. "What were you eating?" he whispered slowly. "Oh, nothing, I-" He was pushed to the ground. The Policeman's hand was still tight around his neck. The second officer searched his pockets, and found a sausage roll; a look of horror crossed the man's face. "How did that get in there?" he began to stutter, but it was too late. The Policeman produced a gun from his belt and shot the man in the head. He was still instantly. The Policemen walked away slowly, chatting as if nothing had happened. Horrified at this experience, I walked back to my house. It was a fairly long way. On my way back, I saw huge red posters with bold black letters. Most of them were peeling away at the corners, and they were all coated in frost, but these letters could be seen from miles away. 'Eat vegan or suffer consequences' it read. I knew what those consequences were and a delicious piece of steak was not worth the risk. All I kept thinking was there is only 24 more days to suffer through... Written by Louisa Nicholson (year 7)

Message for Year 7 Students from Miss Edwards Welcome back, after what I hope was a restful, relaxing and enjoyable Easter with your loved ones. I'm sure it was a very different Easter experience to what you are familiar with. We are now back into the full swing of online learning, and I have already seen some excellent work being produced. I would like to remind you, that at year 7, we are only expecting students to be completing roughly 3 hours of online learning per day. Please refer to the communication that was sent out from Mrs Jenner with a suggested timetable to follow each day. This also includes DEAR and DEAW time, as well as time for some Physical Activity and PE challenges. There are many interesting publications and bulletins that continue to be sent out, and you will find that they are an excellent brain break from your subject work. These include the RodingMatters, RodingReads, Humanities broadcast & the new Science superstars. I have enjoyed reading all of the excellent 'This is Me' tasks that the year 7's have been producing. There will be a new task set on Monday, which will look at ways to recognise and thank our amazing NHS workers. Please continue to regularly check communication from us via email, EduLink, twitter and also on the schools instagram page. I encourage you to contact me should you have any queries regarding your child’s wellbeing, or home learning. Stay Home and Stay Safe.
Message for Year 8 Students from Mr Dobson It has now been a few weeks since the government announced the initial lockdown, which has now been extended for at least another three weeks. Our hearts go out to those families that have been directly affected by the Pandemic and our thoughts are with you. Self-isolation has its downsides; some of us are struggling to sleep due to vivid dreams, others are feeling as if they have no time to do anything despite doing nothing and some of us are climbing the walls after our daily exercise walk. The School has been very proactive in making sure there is enough structure and content for our Year 8 students to effectively work from home. Your son/daughters tutor are happy to help if you have any questions during this time. I have been impressed by how Year 8 have engaged in their learning and the parents who the tutors and I have contacted seemed to have created a solid structure to the day. The school has emailed a plethora of advice and guidance to help home learning and there are also the additional resources such as Roding Matters, Roding Reads, Humanities Broadcast and of course the Parent Bulletin. The PE department has daily challenges and I am looking forward to getting feedback regarding how Year 8 have engaged with this – keep looking at the twitter feed for information. Take care and stay safe.

Message for Year 9 Students from Mr Warry Happy Easter Year 9. I hope you have all had a good rest from work and enjoyed the time with your family. I hope you are all well and staying safe during this difficult time. Staff at RVHS are doing everything they can to support students and the community during this time. Please do get in contact if you feel that you need our support. I want to raise your attention to some recent communications from the Headteacher Mrs Jenner; within that communication was the Home Learning Booklet and a suggested timetable to follow. I believe these resources are very valuable in giving you guidance for home learning. Please do get in contact with me if there is anything additional you need. Now that we have started the summer term Mr Mammen has been working hard to allocate everyone their GCSE options. This should be sorted in the near future. If you don't hear from Mr Mammen then your choices have been allocated to you. Your new Google classrooms will be set up for you shortly and we will be able to start making a very successful and beneficial start to your GCSE courses. This is a very exciting time in your RVHS journey and I am glad to be sharing it with you. Remember to enjoy the time with your family, stay at home, stay safe and work hard. I am looking forward to seeing every single one of you when we return back to school.
Message from Mr Ryan for Year 10 Students I hope everyone is safe and well and are now settling into a routine. It is important not to forget that year 10 will have to sit their GCSEs next year. Therefore, they should now be following the timetable that has been shared. All work is set at the start of the week on google classroom and there are tasks that need to be completed weekly AND SHARED WITH THE NECESSARY TEACHER in order for teachers to see that progress is still being made. If there are any issues all teachers are accessible via their school emails and google classroom. Normally this term we would be looking at the future beyond year 11. For obvious reasons our 'take your child to work' day will need to be postponed. However, this is a good time to start writing CVs in preparation for applying to colleges and Sixth Forms. Please keep an eye out for information on this process. Please don't hesitate to contact me if there are any issues or concerns.

Message from Miss Reed to Year 11 Students Firstly, I hope everyone had a lovely and restful Easter Break in what are very uncertain times for us all at present. Moving into the Summer Term, although Y11 have been instructed to not complete any further work for their GCSE’s, it is extremely important that they are planning their next steps in September. Those students who have applied for RVHS sixth form will this week be receiving subject work booklets for their opted subjects to start working through. If you are still unsure of your next steps, Mrs Mason our careers advisor and I are here to help via email or a phone call. Please can I encourage Y11 students to continue to check their emails, as they will still be receiving important information moving forwards. I am currently in the process of organising the Y11 Year Book; please keep an eye out on your emails for questionnaires I may need students to complete in order to make it the best it possibly can. Please continue to email me should you have any queries. ‘Stay Safe, Stay Home’

Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature.
