“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
RVHS Bulletin Weekending Friday 26th November 2021 Dear Parents / Carers,
560pts
I really hope that everyone in the school community is keeping safe and well. In regards to the recent announcement from the Government over the weekend concerning the new measures being put in place to prevent the spread on the new variant of COVID-19, the school has received an important update from the Department for Education. You should have all received a copy of my letter on Sunday night concerning the changes that will need to be put in place in regards to the use of face coverings. Please can I ask that all parents/carers ensure that they are aware of these changes. This letter is now available on our website, please click here to access. I would like to reassure you that presently COVID cases are relatively low within the school, but we want to continue to do everything that we can to keep the school open and operate as normally as we possibly can. We all want to continue to do everything within our power to minimise future disruption to your child’s education. We have also issued a further set of Lateral Flow tests; so please can you ensure that students continue to test twice weekly on Wednesdays and Sundays. As the cold weather draws in, please can I remind you that the school gates open at 8.25am and therefore, students should not be arriving at the gates significantly before this. The school site is supervised and secure from this time; students arriving before 8:25am for interventions and clubs should enter via the main reception. Safety has been the theme of my assemblies last week. As the darker evenings draw in, please can I ask that students travel straight home from school. We will be doing a ‘Safety Lockdown drill@ next Wednesday and this has been explained to all the students in my assembly. I have also reminded them of the numerous ways that they can seek help within the school, including from their form tutors, their Year Progress Leader, House Captains, Student Voice, Mentors and Leaders within school. They should all be aware of our iamnotok@rodingvalley.com email. I have spoken to them about seeking help for mental health issues and we revisited considering what they are posting on social media.

This term, Miss Dyer’s assemblies were on the topic of bullying. The students played an active part in the assemblies which were about the impact of “bystanders.” The assembly explored the responsibility we have to look out for one another and understand the part we can play in tipping the imbalance of power, sometimes unwittingly, simply by standing by and watching something unfold. Roding Valley High always encourages our students to show empathy and kindness to one another.

We have been incredibly proud of the way our students have returned to school this term. Attendance to school for the vast majority of students has been excellent. The winter months are often the time that students may find the morning routines more difficult, so we have created a short presentation for parents and carers to give some support strategies to ensure your child maintains excellent attendance (at least 96%) in the school year. You can watch the presentation by clicking on the link here. All details regarding attendance can be found on the school website here. We have also reviewed our severe weather day/ alternative day arrangements - please see link on website Our first choice would always be to have students on site, however, given the ability to teach remotely, this would be considered with regard to the severity of each situation. Should this alternative day need to be implemented, it would be communicated by 7:30 am by text/ email and put on our website. Thank you for your ongoing support and please keep safe and well.
Sharon Jenner Headteacher
Dear Parents and Carers, We have again received a number of complaints about parents collecting their children from school that are waiting in their cars in Brook Road with their engines running. Apart from being illegal to idle your vehicle this is also terrible for Air pollution and, in turn, our health. Research has shown links between those that suffer with health issues caused by air pollution, such as asthma, are also at higher risk of complications with COVID-19. Studies have also shown that every year, air pollution causes up to 36,000 deaths in the UK. The World Health Organisation and the UK Government recognise that air pollution is the largest environmental health risk we face today. Poor air quality causes heart and lung diseases, is linked to low birth weight and children’s lung development and may even contribute to mental health issues. So please can we ask that parents turn off their engines whilst waiting for their child to come out of school. Throughout this bulletin, we have included some useful leaflets about ‘CleanAir Day’. We have also included the link to the Clean Air Day website, which contains a wealth of information about air pollution and what we can do about it. Thank you for your support!

Year 7 It is hard to believe that we are nearly through the second half ot the Autumn Term. There are only three weeks until we break up for Christmas. it has been an incredibly long and busy half term and I think I can truly say that the year group has definitely settled into life at Roding Valley. With the end of term being in sight, I would like to gently remind you that we still expect the high standards that we have set to remain in place. This week, Mrs. Jenner has been delivering assemblies on safety either in the school or virtually. I would like to take the opportunity to reinforce some of the messages that she shared with the year group. Our main priority is the safety of the school community and we did need to inform the students of the school's Lockdown policy. Another point to mention is that we do want students to remain safe while they are online/using their mobile phones. No students should share anything to do with the school online. Our latest digital week has been an amazing success. Students have been participating in a variety of online activities in lessons. I have been informed that the second round of Chromebooks are due to be delivered soon. When they arrive we will make you aware of this. Once again, if there is anything either I or the Academic Mentors can do to help, please don't hesitate to ask.
Mr Ryan – Year 7 Progress Leader
Bedrock Award As part of our Digital Policy, the students are also taking part in Bedrock across the school. I would like to congratulate Defne Eren for scoring 118 in her Bedrock quizzes last week.
Superstar
Zahra Kazmi I would also like to congratulate Charlotte Williamson for raising over £500 for Children in Need. She managed to do this by eating only yellow food for 48 hours.
Maisie Southgate
Year 8 Another two weeks have passed and what an incredible two weeks that has been! I cannot believe how quickly this year is passing, Christmas is fast approaching and our Year 8 students are continuing to thrive. We have had so many incredible opportunities that have been grabbed with both hands by our students. We have an amazing new whole school literacy initiative called Bedrock. You will have received parent access codes which will enable all parents to monitor your child's Bedrock usage. Please ensure that your child is engaging in completing their 30 minute, weekly Bedrock assignments, which will significantly improve their literacy skills. Unfortunately, our Year 8 boys football team lost 2-0 against Woolwich Polytechnic School. It was a very close game that could have gone either way. Jack Crisp made some fantastic saves to keep us in the game. The whole team worked extremely hard but sadly didn't get the result we wanted. Well done boys! Our U14's girls football team are through to the Quarter Finals of the Essex Cup after a tremendous 7-6 win against Joyce Frankland Academy. Having to go to penalties, Eirini Merkaki scored an incredible goal to put us in the lead. How proud these students continue to make the RVHS community. It is still not too late to get involved in the incredible extra-curricular programme we have at Roding Valley! If there is a club you have considered but still haven't attended, go and give it a go! There is a huge uptake from our Year 8 students at these clubs so you will never be without someone you know. I thoroughly enjoy handing out certificates in our assemblies on Thursday mornings and always look forward to rewarding our students who have the highest ARE points and student’s overall achievement. Last week I had the pleasure of awarding two Year Progress Awards. These were awarded to:
Dylan Woodford
Eirini Merkaki
Dylan has been noted by many members of staff for his politeness and caring nature to all members of the Roding Valley community.
For her contribution to extra-curricular within the PE department, Eirini gives everything 100% and is always wanting more!
Keep it up both of you! Some of our Year 8 students had the pleasure of going to see the West End production, Wicked! It is so lovely to hear how much the students enjoyed this opportunity, as well as how proud the English department was of how well they represented the school within the public and the theatre. So proud! In this week's assemblies, Mrs Jenner has reminded the Roding Valley community of our lockdown policy, of course this is an extremely unlikely event, however, it is essential our students are aware of what to do in a lockdown situation. Mrs Jenner has made it extremely clear to the community that there should be no use of mobile phones and that in the event of a school lockdown all students should approach this in a very mature manner. It is imperative that all students should follow teachers’ instructions to ensure the safety of their fellow members of Roding Valley. I hope you all have a wonderful fortnight and please do not hesitate to drop me an email if you need any support at all. Miss Fazakerley – Year 8 Progress Leader
Year 9 Another busy fortnight in Year 9 at Roding Valley has passed and I continue to be delighted by how amazing our students are. It really is so lovely to receive emails from different teachers about how hard our Year 9's are working in lessons and how well they are conducting themselves. Keep it up everyone! Last Thursday, Miss Larkin and I delivered the first of two study skills sessions to fully prepare our students for their assessments, which start on Monday 29th November. We looked at where to find revision material, how to create a manageable revision timetable and introduced some revision techniques. This morning, we hosted our second study skills session, which looked specifically at three great revision techniques that I hope our students can utilise effectively for these and any other assessments. Students should arrive to school on Monday ready to complete their assessments in the hall by ensuring they have all of the correct equipment; pencil cases should be clear and contain only a couple of blue/black pens, pencil, sharpener, eraser, ruler and calculator. Any water bottles should be clear with any labels removed and phones should be switched off and left in their school bag. You should have, by now received communication about parent access to Bedrock; our new literacy initiative. Codes have been emailed to all parents which allows you to gain access to and monitor your child's Bedrock usage. This is a great way for you to encourage engagement for your child and ensure they are completing the weekly requirements. Students complete a 20-minute session each week during period 1, which should be followed up with some at home contributions, of at least 30 minutes a week. Please do get in touch if you haven't received this information or are having issues with gaining access. In our weekly assembly this week, Mrs Jenner went through important procedures to ensure that all children would be safe and accounted for in the school if there was ever the unlikely event of needing a school lockdown. Students were reminded about what the lockdown alarm sounds like and what they needed to do should this ever happen. I also reiterated the importance of being calm and mature in these times. No students should be using their mobile phones if this was to occur and I would expect all Year 9 students to follow teacher guidance to ensure the safety of themselves, their classmates and the teacher in the room. We will have a drill to practice this procedure in the coming week. I want to congratulate our Under 14's Girls football team who are now through to the quarter finals of the Essex Cup competition. Our girls played against Joyce Frankland Academy on Tuesday night and put in an incredible performance. We eventually won on penalties (7-6). Well done to all the year 9 girls who represented RVHS with such pride and best of luck in the next round. Our Year 9 boys also participated in a Rugby tournament on Monday evening, and for some of those boys it was their first ever experience playing Rugby. They played against Ongar Academy and West Hatch High School, winning one game and losing the other. They all did themselves and RVHS proud. Moving into these colder days, where all students are now wearing coats, I want to remind all students and parents that students must still be wearing blazers underneath their coats at all times. Coats shouldn't be worn in buildings and hoods should only be worn if raining. Also, students shouldn't be wearing any other type of jumper with their PE kit, other than the RVHS navy blue PE fleece, available at Forest Casual. I would really encourage as many of our pupils to be wearing this fleece during PE days, now that the weather has really turned. Students shouldn't be wearing their black knit school jumper with their PE kit. Enjoy the long weekend and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday morning, ready to conduct yourselves impeccably in your assessments.
Miss Edwards – Year 9 Progress Leader

Sylvia achieved 30 points this week - congratulations Sylvia!
Congratulations to all of you for the hard work and effort that went into achieving these awards: Four aspects were completed - Volunteering, Physical & Skill (3 months each) and the Expedition (orienteering, mapreading, teamwork, and camp craft). This shows enormous commitment from students, and we are tremendously proud of their achievements. Very well done to you all.
As ever there is a great deal going on for students and so it is crucial that everyone regularly checks their emails. Hopefully, everyone managed to complete the Post 16 Taster Day Form and is looking forward to the sessions that they have requested on the 9th December 2021. (Please note that there is no requirement for students to wear suits, however, if your son or daughter has a smart suit which they would like to wear they are more than welcome to. School trousers, white shirt and a different tie /smart blazer or standard school uniform is perfect - as explained in assembly on Friday) The Year 11 assembly on Friday was led by Mrs Jenner and was based around safety and preparation for a lockdown drill planned for next week. Student were reminded how to respond and the purpose of the drill amongst other safety messages. Please also note that we are entering into the final phase of our foodbank collection - we have some amazing House boxes ready and waiting for contributions and this will close on Friday 3rd December - donations are gratefully received and thank you for any that we have already received. Revision techniques and Bedrock continue to take place in Personal Development sessions. Please encourage your son/daughter to use all of the support that they are being offered, it will inspire confidence and achievement and help to maintain a steady journey to next summer. Hope that you have all enjoyed a long weekend, have a lovely week.

Every Tuesday after school a group of Y12 Scientists meets to 'Discover Science'. Here, we read about recent scientific developments, debate scientific practice, and plan practical investigations. After reading an article in Chemistry World entitled 'The Rise of Ferrofluids' we set about making our own magnetic liquid. Ferrofluids are induced magnetic liquids which are composed of three components: sub microscopic magnetically permeable particles of iron oxide, a surfactant that relieves surface tension, and a carrier fluid. Ferrofluids are used commercially in electrical devices such as speakers, MRI machines, and hard drives. We found a straightforward methodology for making a ferrofluid using iron filings, vegetable oil, and fairy liquid. However, we found that the iron filings were too coarse to make a thin liquid. Determined to succeed we conducted further research and identified that the toner powder used in computers could be a suitable alternative. After obtaining the printer toner, we varied the volumes of oil and fairy liquid used by trial and error until we had produced a thick black liquid that could be turned into a solid simply by exposing it to a magnetic field!
In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to Miss Hollis at ahollis@rodingvalley.net
Some of our Year 11 students benefited from a workshop session with our Year 13 students who were excellent ambassadors for our Sixth Form. The Year 11s were asking sensible questions about their GCSE topics of family and education and responded well to being quizzed by our experts in the room! They also used the opportunity to ask our Sixth Formers about A Level choice in the Sixth Form and what life as a Sixth Former is like.
Our Year 13 students were very impressed with the knowledge demonstrated by them and also with their positive attitude towards their learning having recently completed their PPE's. It was a real pleasure to observe our students working together in such a collaborative fashion. We plan to repeat the experience in the future. Mrs Delbourgo

With Ms Preston Wellbeing in Winter The winter months can be really tough for many people. Often this can be attributed to Seasonal Adjustment Disorder.
What Causes SAD? Seasonal affective disorder can be caused by several factors, the exact cause is not known, and these can vary between people. The most common causes are believed to be a lack of light as a lack of vitamin D and sunlight affects how the brain and body work:
Body clock is disrupted – your brain uses the hour of daylight to set itself and carry out important functions like waking up and sleeping. A change in your internal rhythm can lead to symptoms of SAD. Melatonin production – made by the brain when it's dark, this is the hormone that helps us sleep. If you’re experiencing SAD then your body may produce more melatonin than it normally would, causing you to feel sleepy, sluggish and tired. Serotonin levels – the hormone that influences mood, sleep and appetite. The production of which can be affected by lack of sunlight, a decrease in serotonin levels in the body can lead to feelings of depression.
Some people may be more vulnerable to the condition, especially if they already have a mental illness or sometimes SAD can run in families.
Tackling SAD Know that you’re not alone SAD affects 2 million people in the UK and more than 12 million across Northern Europe. Don’t brush off your low mood as “just the winter blues” and understand that SAD is a very real and very treatable thing. It really is okay not to be okay and with the right techniques and treatments you can improve your mood and learn to cope with SAD and depression. Experts suggest keeping your bedroom temperature at around 18c – not too hot and not too cold. Aim to drink eight glasses of clear liquids each day, try having a glass of water at the same time as every hot drink. Using a light box or trying to use breaks and opportunities to get outside - aim for as much natural light as you can get Keep an eye on vitamin D intake Try not to eat carb heavy meals in the evening - which take time for your body to digest and can leave you feeling sluggish the next day. Connect with friends and family to promote feelings of belonging and wellbeing Celebrate winter for all the things you love about it. From sweater weather to Christmas festivities - think about all the parts of winter that make you happy. e.g. sitting by a warm fire and enjoying a cup of hot chocolate

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.
2
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
3
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
4 5
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
6
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
7
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
8
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.
