“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
RVHS Bulletin Weekending Friday 27th January 2022 Dear Parents / Carers, The site in Alderton Hill is now celebrating 116 years as a school. It has not always been Roding Valley High School and was formerly known as Loughton County HIgh School for Girls. To pay tribute to this 116-year anniversary, the students are currently researching the rich history of this beautiful school. I have so enjoyed reading the old school ledgers and archives and look forward to the upcoming special edition of ‘Exposed’. A former student has written a lovely reflection of her time at the school and this can be viewed on the History of our school webpage, along with a sneak peek of some photos from the archive. From Thursday 27th January, Students and staff are no longer required to wear face coverings in the school but given the continued rise in cases we will not discourage their use, especially if members of the community are vulnerable or feel that they want to. This week has seen our highest level of COVID cases in school and It has been quite difficult with increased staff absence. I am hopeful that the situation will ease as the term progresses, thank you for your continued support. Visitors to the school will be kept to a minimum, if you do need to attend then please ensure that you have taken a LFT test before you arrive. My staff will continue to host remote meetings or call parents wherever possible for the time being. We are still encouraging testing for everyone in the school community, at least twice a week, Sundays and Wednesdays. Students have been issued with new test kits today. Please check that the students bring these home as we have had some concerns raised from the public regarding test kits being discarded. It's been a busy week - The Year 7 and Year 8 exams went really well and the students had their first exam experience in the main sports hall. They all behaved in a very mature fashion and applied themselves very positively. Essex Youth Service visited the Year 10s and they enjoyed a drama production ’Unacceptable Behaviour’ - this should help them make good choices as young adults and congratulations to all those students who took part in the Jack Petchey ‘Speak Out Challenge’. It was a very moving experience to host the whole school assembly on Thursday for Holocaust Memorial Day. Every member of the school community, in every classroom was logged on for the remote delivery by myself, Miss Larkin and Miss Preston. This means nearly 1500 students in silence around the entire school site, listening and reflecting on actions they can take to live in a world where Follow us: genocide no longer exists. The bulletin is packed with celebrations and activities that our students have engaged with over the last few weeks. I am hopeful that we can look forward to a time when we can increase school @rodinghs @RodingValleyHS enrichment trips and visits. All curriculum areas are reviewingwww.rodingvalley.net future enrichment experiences and I know that we already have a number of overseas trips planned for 2023.. Fingers crossed that our students get to enjoy these great experiences.

Year 9 parents should note that the Options Evening is approaching on Thursday 10th February - following the success of the Options microsite last year, we will once again be launching a microsite that will include videos explaining the process and information about each of the subjects. Mr Mammen will be writing to Year 9 parents with further details in the next week or so. We continue to prepare the Year 11 and 13s for their upcoming GCSE and A levels and are waiting on final guidance from the Department of Education, promised by the 7th February. All students are aware of the brilliant revision resources available to them and their access to the bespoke revision microsites GCSE and A Level. Over the past few weeks, we have also been holding GCSE Subject specific workshops, Maths and Science - details are on the microsites. The next one is History and Geography - Wednesday 2nd February @6pm - link will be emailed. Our focus is on the whole student and please do contact us if there is anything that is causing your child concerns in school, we will always do our best to support. Students are aware of our iamnotok@rodingvalley.net email. Our personal development programme continues to successfully educate on issues that affect our young people. Can I remind you of the available parent support for online / teenage safety that can be accessed through our Internet Provider LGfL and some helpful advice on the school website. Attendance at school is a main priority for us and I am delighted that our attendance remains above national average for schools during this pandemic period. Our students have continued to access education at all times and those currently self-isolating have access to a full curriculum via google classroom and in KS4/5 - live lesson provision. I appreciate that foreign travel is very appealing especially as it has been denied to many for so long but please note that I will not be authorising holidays during term time. Please do follow us on Twitter @RodingValleyHS Enjoy the rest of the bulletin and have a good weekend. Kind regards Sharon Jenner Headteacher
In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to Miss Hollis at ahollis@rodingvalley.net
Our team is proud to be your child’s Year Progress Leader and very much looking forward to supporting your child and with such a great cohort of students, we are sure it will be a great half term. Year 7 It is the end of another fortnight in Year 7 and it is such a relief to see the weather improving, we even have ducks visiting the brook at the moment. On this note I would still advise that your child has a 'weather proof'' coat, preferably plain blue or black. We have had a successful digital week this term and because these weeks are so successful Year 7 now have two every half term. Our next one is the week beginning the 21st of February. I would like to point out that because it is digital week it doesn't mean that every lesson will be digital. We will just incorporate as many digital strategies as we can during the week. For those parents that didn't purchase a Chromebook all departments have Chromebooks as well. Please contact me and I will explain how this can be done. I am always so impressed with how the Year group present themselves and behave around the school. The students have done incredibly well during the exams this week. I was impressed with the way they lined up in silence for their exams and fire drill. The year group are doing incredibly well with their punctuality and I am very proud of the majority of students who make it to school on time every day. I do have to say that students need to follow the rules around going to the toilet. They should only be in the toilets during break and lunch, not during the changeover of lessons. If they need to go to the toilet urgently they will need to ask the teachers for permission to leave the lesson. The students are taking full advantage of being able to use the Astro at lunch, however, I am concerned about some of the behaviour that is displayed. The Astro is for the children to have a 'friendly kick-about'. There should not be any slide tackles or pushing or shoving. This is for everyone's safety during lunch break. When students leave the Astro they are to change into their school shoes and not wear their boots around the school. The House competitions are well underway, please keep your eyes peeled for any notices to do with Challenge and Enrichment as there are some really exciting opportunities for the students to take part in. The English faculty would like to encourage students to read as much as possible. All students should have a DEAR book and should be completing their reading passports, these are with their Academic Mentors. Students who read over a million words will be entered into the 'Millionaire's draw'. As always, please feel free to contact me if there are any concerns. Mr Ryan – Year 7 Progress Leader
Year 8 We are at the end of another fortnight at Roding Valley, I cannot believe how quickly this year is going. As always, our Year 8 students consistently make us proud with their amazing achievements. We have had some incredible PD sessions with the students' academic mentors and seen some amazing work. This week we have had the Year 8 exams, which we have seen the students working incredibly hard. Ms Larkin launched the Year 8 Revision House competition which you can see some amazing examples here from our Roding Valley Revision techniques. In the Roding Valley community and in life, punctuality is an essential habit to have. We have introduced a new late to lesson system, this is where any student who is late to a lesson will receive an automatic PAL1, as any student who is late causes disruption to the lesson. Additionally, to maintain our drive on punctuality, if students are late to school this is an automatic lunchtime 20-minute detention. Unfortunately, our Year 8 football team lost this week to Brentwood School in the Essex Cup but they showed excellent team work right until the very end. We have some exciting Netball tournaments coming up so please keep your eyes peeled for those. As always, if you have any concerns or questions please email me jfazakerley@rodingvalley.net Miss Fazakerley – Year 8 Progress Leader
Year 9 Another fortnight has flown by and Year 9 continue to conduct themselves in an impressive manner. Well done to all our students who do themselves proud each and every day. I know I am extremely proud of most of our Year 9 pupils who continue to do the right thing all of the time. I hope many of you made the most of the opportunity to talk to as many of your child's teachers as possible. I trust that your child has taken on board the feedback that was provided and is continuing to try and improve their overall attitude and progress in each of their subjects. Should you have any follow up questions regarding anything that was discussed during parents evening, please don't hesitate to contact the subject teacher directly, or your child's academic mentor. As mentioned previously, our Year 9 Options Evening will take place on Thursday 10th February. This event will provide yourself and your son/daughter with all of the relevant information needed to make informed choices when selecting GCSE options. Further information regarding this evening will be circulated in due course, but please do make a note of the date to ensure your availability for this important evening. On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of delivery our Personal Development lesson, which focused on the importance of understanding and recognising mental health and mental ill health. During this current climate, it is more important than ever before to continue to support one another and speak up when you are concerned about someone in our community. I continue to encourage all of our students to use the iamnotok@rodingvalley.net email address which is picked up by our safeguarding team, who are extremely discrete and efficient in providing support when requested. We continue with our drive on punctuality, which will see your child receive a 20-minute lunch time detention on the same day that they are late to school. Please do stress the importance of your child attending this detention, to avoid them receiving a 60 minute after school detention on a Friday. However, it is vital that your child is doing everything they can to ensure they arrive to school prior to 8.35am which will set them up for a successful and productive day. I look forward to seeing all our Year 9 students apply themselves well over these final 2 weeks of the half term and continue to work hard for as many ARE points as possible. I love celebrating these students in our assemblies and handing out que jumper passes for those students who are leading the way. Please don't hesitate to contact myself or your child's academic mentor should you have any queries or concerns. Miss Edwards – Year 9 Progress Leader

Year 11 With another week under our belts, most students are taking advantage of extra sessions, interventions and support. Students are covering content and exam skills. This is a great way for students to grow in confidence and see progress happening. I hope that this inspires them to continue to achieve their goals. Don't forget our microsite for Year 11 and that on Wednesday's there are short revision sessions for different subjects. These too are on the website. Some lucky Year 10 students had a wonderful day with the Jack Petchey team last week. Working through speech writing, delivery, persuasive speaking and ending the day with a battle of the speeches! Each student presented a one-minute speech on a topic of their choice for the panel of judges. It was a tough choice but our four finalists were: Christina Robinson, Rosa Marshall, Finn Madigan and Bianca Nedelcu. Such a wonderful day and a great learning experience for the students involved!
A big thank you to Ms Bates for organising and supervising the day!

Star Writer of the Week Congratulations to
Elysia Filaitis
Seeing as we study The Great Gatsby, the English department took year 13 English literature students to London’s Great Gatsby’s immersive experience. The night began with us being introduced into the theatre by Mr. George Wilson, where we then took our seats in the main stage area. We had the opportunity to go to the bar and buy some non-alcoholic drinks and prepare ourselves to enjoy the night. The experience allowed us to interact with the key characters of the novel, such as Jordan Baker, Daisy and Tom Buchanan, Myrtle and George Wilson, Nick Caraway and of course Jay Gatsby.
for being nominated as the Star Writer by Ms De-Ilo for her fantastic Review of The The key sections of the novel were then Great Gatsby. performed, however, it felt more like we were living the script rather than just watching it. We were sectioned into occasional break out rooms, where some of us performed tasks, such as helping Daisy to decide which clothes would impress Mr. Gatsby, while others enjoyed ourselves in dancing the Charleston with golf-pro Jordan Baker. Witnessing the tragic love story of Gatsby and Daisy, we saw the high points which love bought to the couple, which were soon contrasted against the devastating death of the infamous protagonist. Each of us came back from the theatre having had an amazing time, with a wider and clearer understanding of Fitzgerald’s famous novel. The trip was an overall success and we are all incredibly thankful to the English department for giving us the opportunity to have had this exciting immersive experience.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.
2
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
3
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
4 5
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
6
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
7
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
8
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.
Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
