RVHS Bulletin - 4th March 2022

Page 1

“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

RVHS Bulletin Weekending Friday 4th March 2022 Dear Parents/ Carers, We are all facing uncertainty at this time and we are trying really hard to work with our students to ensure that they have an understanding of what is happening in the world. As I mentioned in my earlier email, earlier this week, whilst there are no clear answers as to the ‘best way’ that a school can support their community - this is, after all, an unprecedented situation - our approach will be flexible, impartial, tailored to our children and how they present to staff. Our students know that we will offer support where needed and can approach any teacher, or use the iamnotok@rodingvalley.net email address. The students reacted very positively to our whole school assembly on the ‘Ukraine Conflict’, I hope that the assembly supported further conversation at home. The assembly slides and other support documents can be found on our website - How To Support Your Child Our students want to ‘do something’ to help the humanitarian crisis. We have received numerous emails and messages from our students wanting to help and feel part of that response. Therefore, we will be collecting essential items at the school to help keep the families and children caught in the conflict, safe and warm. Students can bring into school items from the essential list below, taking them to the Drama Hut on arrival, where they will be sorted and collected by our volunteer sixth formers. The school will then drop off the donations at the Donation hub set up at Civic Offices at Epping Forest District Council. Please only send your child into school with donations that they can carry - if you have large amounts of donations then please take them direct to the numerous donation hubs being set up locally. Please only donate to us, up to the quantity that your child can carry into school.

On a lighter note, it has been very positive here in school. Our Year 11s were brilliant in their pre-public examinations and their effort and attitude are to be commended. We will continue to work hard with all our exam groups to prepare them for their summer exams. Please do refer to our Exam microsite - Exams Summer 2022 for everything that you need to know. Our students are leaders of the future and we encourage them to have a voice. We encourage student leadership across the school and value their voice in our strategies. I really enjoyed meeting a small group of students, who represent the school council, at the Headteacher’s Conversation this week. We discussed issues relating to House competitions, student led litter campaigns, tree planting and toilets. I have taken all their items raised back to my team for action. The Year 10/11 students will be pleased to hear that the only ‘old fashioned’ toilets in the school are being re-modelled in the summer.

It was so brilliant to meet our incredible students that are standing as Epping Forest Youth Councillors. The polling date is Thursday 10th March and we wish them all luck in the Youth Elections 2022. Today was the student-led COP26 Climate Conference - WOW!!! Brilliantly organised by our students and supported by the Challenge and Enrichment coordinators.Thank you to our governor, Margaret James for coming in to judge the very credible and well-researched entries. I look forward to hearing the winning proposals and discussing with the students how we can make them a reality in our school. Parents please note that Friday 18th March is an Inset Day - this day will be for essential staff training, moderation and intervention with key exam groups. Students will receive invites for dedicated intervention sessions and these will be sent out. Students who are not in exam groups and not invited in for specific intervention classes will have assignments set on their subject Google classrooms that will need to be submitted at the end of the school day. Please refer to the school website for all term dates I have attached our special edition of RVHS 'Exposed' celebrating 116 years of Roding Valley High School. The students taking part have worked incredibly hard researching the history of the school, conducting interviews and contacting previous students. This edition covers the school's history from the opening of Loughton County High School for Girls in 1908 all through till today. - click here Take care, Sharon Jenner – Headteacher In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. For more information on the qualifying benefits and for more information, please visit our Free School Meals page on our school website. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling. If you believe that your child is eligible for Free School Meals, please click here to use our Free School Meals Checker. Your Certificate of Eligibility will then need to be emailed to Miss Hollis at ahollis@rodingvalley.net

Year 7 Hello again and welcome back after what I hope was a lovely half term break. The Year group are looking particularly rested and seem ready for action. The first week back was our digital week where the students yet again demonstrated how well they can behave and be trusted. It was lovely to walk into different classes around the school and see the students researching important/under-appreciated notable people in different fields of study. My Year 7 English class were writing about Maya Angelou and George Elliot, to name a few. We are having a real drive on Bedrock. This is a literacy program designed to enable students to improve their spoken and written English. Every Wednesday, students spend 20 minutes on Bedrock. What we would like is that they complete more sessions at home. If you worked with your son or daughter on this, you would be able to see how well they are doing. Whilst I love how the year group embraces modern technology, I am concerned about their attitudes towards social media and the repercussions this may have. Please can I ask that you befriend your child on all their social media platforms so that you can actually see what they are posting. This will really benefit us and help you to understand and develop your relationship with your child. You should have received your son/daughter's report in preparation for Parents' Evening which is on Thursday 10th March. This is virtual and you can make appointments via Edulink. Each teacher will have slots for you to book. Each session is 5 minutes long. Should you need to speak to your son/daughter's teachers in more depth please email them and they will be happy to meet with you. The Year 7 inter house football tournament is incredibly successful with mixed teams competing for their houses. As I write Murray house is in the lead! What I think is so good about this tournament is that the students are coming together to support each other in friendly rivalry. There are many such competitions for the year group to get involved in. As part of the Challenge and Enrichment challenge students can enter the Showcase where they get to create a presentation that will then be judged. We also have a trip to the Natural History Museum coming up where a selected group of students will be invited to participate. Mr Ryan – Year 7 Progress Leader

Year 8 Another two weeks have passed and there have yet again been so many exciting opportunities for Year 8. Last week there was the Faraday engineering challenge, this was amazing and all the staff that had the pleasure to visit at different points during the day said how incredible the group's prototypes were. They truly made everyone proud with their diligent planning, designing, budgeting and building for their prototypes. Well done team! Another group of Year 8 students visited the Natural History Museum as part of Roding Valley High School's challenge and enrichment programme. Miss Pinches, who organised the visit, was so impressed at the students' behaviour, saying that they really represented Roding Valley well, being a pleasure to take them on the tube and Museum. There have been lots of sporting opportunities for the Year 8's. Our Year 8 girls Rugby team had the pleasure of a training match against Robert Clack, the girls had never played Rugby competitively, but picked it up so quickly, getting really stuck in, resulting in an excellent win. Well done! The Year 8 boys Rugby team attended a sevens tournament at Westcliff High School where they did incredibly well. We look forward to where Rugby will take these students. There was also a WESSA swimming gala at West Hatch which went swimmingly for our Year 8 team. Additionally, our Year 8 indoor athletics team represented us against the WESSA schools at West Hatch, which I will announce the results next week in assembly. As a school we have had a huge push of the Bedrock programme, it is essential that every student is completing 20 minutes in their Friday Period 1 as well as 20 minutes in their home learning at least. This programme develops student's literacy significantly, exposing them to high level words which will aid them when it comes to their GCSE and further education. Miss Fazakerley – Year 8 Progress Leader

Year 9 What another busy fortnight we have had in year 9. This week we have focused on the options process, and students have had the opportunity to experience some 'taster' lessons in those subjects that they haven't previously studied. This allowed students to sample some of the lesson content that the course will include over the next two years. Hopefully by now, your child will have completed and submitted their online option form outlining their preference of subjects. If you are experiencing any difficulties with this, please don't hesitate to contact myself or Mr Mammen. On Tuesday, we had our Year 9 boy’s rugby team head to Westcliffe to participate in the Essex cup Rugby tournament. Unfortunately, they lost both of their games to Redden Court School and The Eastwood Academy, but represented themselves exceptionally well and did themselves and RVHS proud. I would like to encourage as many of our year 9's as possible to get involved in as many extra-curricular activities as possible. Tomorrow, we will be taking 46 Year 9 students to Manchester to experience a premier league football match at the Etihad stadium. I hope they are all equally as excited as I am for this trip and show how wonderfully behaved I know they all can be. I look forward to putting our pictures and student write up's in our next bulletin. Please can I remind you about the importance of arriving to school on time. We are seeing an increasing number of Year 9 students arriving late to school, which provides a really unsettled start to the day. This will also result in a 20-minute lunchtime detention that same day. All students should be through the Brook Road gate by no later than 8.35am. In our Personal development lessons over the past few weeks, we have started our new strand 'Healthy Me'. We have looked at how we can make healthier choices, and this week we looked at how Alcohol can affect our health. Over the coming weeks we will be delving deeper into how other substances such as smoking have negative impacts on our health, together with learning some lifesaving skills. These PD lessons are now an important part of our week, and something all Year 9 students look forward to. Miss Edwards – Year 9 Progress Leader

Year 11 Another excellent week from year 11 who have worked hard at their second round of PPE exams. I am proud of the conduct and determination of students and hope that this weekend is an opportunity to rest. Students are continuing with their careers meetings with our careers officer Mrs Mason, and you will receive an email that outlines the courses and careers discussed with your child. The Personal Development topic strand for this half term is Healthy Me and it includes sessions on: Managing Anxiety and stress, exam pressure, work-life balance, sexual health, hygiene, self-examination, STI's, sexual pressure, fertility, contraception, pregnancy facts and myths, identifying health risks and strategies for staying safe. I would like to take the opportunity to remind students and parents that school uniform standards need to remain in place for all. Generally, the Year 11 look really smart and are dressed appropriately, however, if a student has an issue with their uniform, please send them in with a note to me so that I am aware. In other exciting news - the Year 11 Prom is booked for Wednesday 29th June 2022 @ Woolston Manor. This will also be the date for the Year 11 final assembly. I will send out more information on both in due course. Here is a link to the summer exam timetable for those of you eager to book holidays!! Ms Preston – Year 11 Progress Leader

On Saturday 19th February a group of Year 12 Chemistry students (Daniel Mehr, RuoXi He, Tolani Aradeon and Chloe Norwood) attended the Cambridge Chemistry Race where they were up against other teams to solve Chemistry problems. The teams race against each other in solving chemistry problems. Although they didn't win, they had a fantastic experience which ended with dinner at Trinity College. Daniel said: We had to answer 60 questions of increasing difficulty in a matter of 2 hours, all based on chemistry. The competition was not met without difficulty, but thankfully we were able to work together and answered as many questions as possible. We enjoyed the experience, learning from it and hoping to train a stronger team for the future.

Accelerated Reader With Miss Woods

World Book Day Yesterday we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of World Book Day with lots of different activities. Students were completing book quizzes, guessing our Masked Readers at the start of each lesson and bumping to our staff dressed up as their favourite literacy character. We are already looking forward to next year! Login Reminder: To access Accelerated Reader via the school website, scroll to the bottom of the Home page of our website and select Accelerated Reader, then select ‘I am a student’ Username: First letter of your first name and the first four letters of your last name.

The Scarlet and Ivy Series The Scarlet and Ivy series (which consists of 6 books) is an amazing book series which is set in the 1930s.It is suitable for ages 8 and up. It is about twin sisters (called Scarlet and Ivy) who solve mysteries and have extraordinary adventures around their blood-curdling boarding school - and outside of it. If I had to give this book a rating out of 5, I would definitely rate it as a 5 because it is an exceptional book series and is full of creativity and mystery. The reason that everybody should read this book is because it is filled with fun, adventure and amazing discoveries. Not only is the story unbelievable, but the vocabulary is too. It uses ambitious vocabulary which is helpful for developing. Written by Isabella Kellett – Year 7

Debate team has put together a COP26 Student Conference at Roding Valley High School where in their Houses students presented an idea to a panel of judges on how we can improve our eco-footprint here at RVHS. The students researched their idea in depth and shared their amazing presentations, these included: double-glazing of the school, reusable Tupperware for students, reusable RVHS water bottles and ‘green’ non-uniform days to help raise money for climate change.

Current House Points Totals This half term brings lots of opportunities for students to get involved and contribute to the wider school through the house events. On the House page of our school website there are a selection of events that are on offer this half term. A recent survey of students showed that 86% of students are taking part in house events! That is amazing, however we would like everyone to be taking part in something in some way! Please do encourage your child to take part in some of the upcoming events. Year 7 and 8 have also been taking part in Interhouse Football Tournament at lunchtime with house competing against each other. This event was organised by our House Captain Megan Allgood. We still have a few matches left to see who manages to get to the top of the table!

Hi Parents & Carers, As many of you may know, at RVHS we now use an online, interactive literacy tool called 'Bedrock'. Bedrock is a tool that helps to improve our students Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary and improve their application of these new words. This week, our students have had a virtual assembly based on the importance of this tool. If you want to look at the assembly, please click here. During Term 1, Ms Bleakley and I also did a live-streamed parent's workshop on Bedrock. If you missed this, and want to watch the recording, please click on the link below: 1. To watch the live stream, please click here. 2. To access the free Bedrock resources on our website, please click here. If you would like to be re-sent your parent access code (so that you can monitor your child's progress on BEDROCK) via email, please email me on plarkin@rodingvalley.net Thank you for supporting this excellent literacy tool! As always, if you need any support with home learning, revision, study or Bedrock, please contact me on plarkin@rodingvalley.net. Thank you for your continued support.

1

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

2

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

3

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

4 5

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

6

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

7

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

8

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

 11-13yrs Thinkuknow website: https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/11_13/  14yrs + Thinkuknow website – https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/14_plus/ Our websites provide open and honest guidance for young people on friends, relationships and the internet, covering topics like dealing with pressure; consent; and getting support when you are worried. You will find lots more advice on keeping your child safe online at www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents. If you are worried that a child or young person is at risk of harm online, you should call the police. Young people can make a report to CEOP at https://www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/

Other Recommended Resources Parent Info: Expert information for parents about building their child’s resilience both online and off. Produced by NCA-CEOP and Parent Zone. What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
