RVHS Bulletin Weekending Friday 4th December 2020 3370pts
Message from the Headteacher As we are approaching the end of our autumn term, I would like to take this o pportunity to thank all of our parents and students for their support in a time that has been both unusual and challenging. In these last few weeks we have seen increasing numbers of positive cases within our school community and have had significant numbers of students at home self -isolating. I am pleased with the school’s response to these incidents and the continued curriculum offered by the teachers. Students are receiving either a full remote curriculum via the Google classroom, where the whole bubble is self-isolating, or a blended curriculum for other year groups, where only groups within the bubble are self-isolating. Please see our Home Learning section further on in the bulletin or on our website. Each positive case is dealt with individually in liaison with Public Health England and close contacts identified to try to minimise the disruption. My teachers have become highly efficient at delivering ‘live’ lessons and this is bespoke for different groups of students depending on the Year group and staff availability. The students' attitude towards the safety plans in school remain quite outstanding. We have made a further amendment to our Student Behaviour Addendum to reflect the expectation of a student participating in a ‘live’ lesson. Remote or physical learning cannot be disrupted by poor behaviour.

We are in Tier 2 in this area and it is supportive to all in the schoo l community if the rules around socialising outside of school are followed. I have been asked by the Department of Education to publicise the Tier 2 posters in school. Our full Safety Plan can be found on our website. Please can all parents of Year 11 and Year 13 students please note the government announcement yesterday regarding the additional support being put in place for the summer exams. Full guidance can be read here. This guidance confirms that the exams 2021 will be going ahead and there are going to be reasonable adjustments made. These adjustments are in recognition of the disruption that some students have received nationally to their education during the pandemic. These will include: A three-week delay to the start of the exams More generous grading than usual, in line with national outcomes from 2020, so students this year are not disadvantaged Students receiving advance notice of some topic areas covered in GCSE, AS and A levels to focus revision;

Classes of the Week Mrs Barron is delighted with the enthusiasm, work and behaviour of 7Ar . Today we packed for an expedition to Antarctica - well in theory - and learned about Captain Scott's ill-fated race to the bottom of the Earth. Mrs Barron cannot wait to see the great essays that follow!
Last week our Year 7’s worked on different AfL techniques. Whiteboards and voting have been a big hit!
Year 8 Another excellent fortnight has flown by for our hardworking and resilient Year 8's. All Year 8 classes have now moved into their new permanent ‘base’, which they can take ownership of and make their own. Students will now have all of their lessons in that one room, meaning there is much more consistency for the students across their subjects. One of the many benefits of these new permanent bases is the proximity to my office. I have been able to visit so many different lessons over the last two weeks to see our amazing classes in action. The hardwork and dedication to their studies has been impressive and I look forward to seeing this continue as we move through the remainder of this term. I would like to again stress the importance of your child attend ing school with a face covering. This is vital in ensuring the safety of all in our school and community. Communication has gone about our exciting Sports Tour for 2022. We are running a Netball & Football tour of South Africa. This is a once in a lifetime trip for our students and presents excellent opportunities for gaining skills which cannot be taught in the classroom. Deposits are due by Monday 14th December to secure your interest in this exciting trip. Please direct any questions relating to this exciting tour to myself at cedwards@rodingvalley.net With many of our Year 8 students having to self-isolate at home due to the recent Covid cases in our bubble, I encourage you all to continue with the online learning provision that we are providing for you. This involves LIVE lessons for English, Maths & Science, together with class material posted on Google classroom for your other subjects. If you are having difficulties with any login details, please send an email to your academic mentor in the first instance. They will be able to help you with any technical difficulties you are experiencing. I want to congratulate all of you on conducting yourself so well in your online lessons so far this week and engaging well with your subjects. I look forward to welcoming all of you who are self-isolating back to school on Tuesday 8th December.

Year 9 Another interesting week and another week were Year 9 have shown themselves to be a resilient bunch of young people.
.
This week we have seen Year 9 students taking their exams and the feedback I have received has been outstanding. I could not be more proud of this cohort as the exams can be demanding and stressful. However, they have shown how dedicated they are in their preparation leading up to them. It is great to see that they understand the importance of these exams and how we will use the data to track progress. Overall, this term has been very different to any other that any of us have experienced. I am continually blown away by the attitude of the Year 9 students and during such a difficult time. Collectively they have all embraced a number of changes, supported one anoth er and adapted to an ever-changing picture. Thank you all for your hard work and efforts.

9BE - Registration equipment checks, the majority have all the equipment they need each day. Lots of involvement and interaction in Period 1 Character and Culture sessions - it has been a great way to get to know my new group, lots of really interesting conversations and ideas.
Year 10 I firstly wanted to highlight the achievement of some of our Year 10 students for gaining the highest ARE points this week. It’s brilliant to see such a positive atmosphere in the lessons of Year 10 students and the brilliant quality of work being done. Year 10 will also be having a Celebration Assembly to celebrate their achievements in Key Stage 3. Please look out for that and congratulate the students who have been awarded when it is released. I will follow up with more detailed regarding the release date in the coming days. Due to a positive case of Covid-19 in our Year group, we have seen some of Year 10 having to start a period of self-isolation, I am pleased that the impact this has on their education is reduced through the ability of students to still access their ‘live’ lessons. I have been really pleased with the feedback I have had with regards to the levels of resilience and maturity displayed by all students throughout this time. Please do remember that you are able to email individual subject teachers if you have any subject specific questions. To support in the smooth running of our online and physical provision for Year 10 can I please point those who are having to self-isolate to the most recent letter from Mrs Jenner where you will find detailed guidance and help videos for accessing the provision. I am grateful for all the continued support from parents and students at this unusual time.

Year 11 It has been another excellent couple of weeks for year 11. Both in School and online. As I visit as many lessons as possible, I am always so impressed with the work ethic and attitude being displayed in classrooms. Everyone is focussed and really pushing towards their goals. It is important to bear in mind that this is the longest term of the academic year and it is vital that students maintain their momentum. In order for them to do this, could I ask that you keep an eye on their diets/sleeping habits, as to succeed they need to be as healthy as possible in order to make it through the year as well as through the pandemic. Reports should have made it to you last Thursday, where you will see how well your child has done in their recent tests. Please be aware that if they are red for either a subject or ATL you should expect to be contacted by that teacher to arrange a meeting to discuss progress. All information about concerns meetings will be provided in a separate letter. It is excellent to see how many students have had careers interviews or have booked them. Please remember that Mrs Mason can be contacted on dmason@rodingvalley.net

Whilst we are having live lessons online, it is important that students remember their manners and the expectations that they would normally abide by in School. If students behave as well as they have done then the second week will go by as quickly as the first.

Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.
Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
