“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”
RVHS Bulletin Weekending Friday 9th October 2020

Message from the Headteacher Last Saturday, as we weren’t able to hold our normal Year 6 Open Morning on-site due to COVID restrictions so we held it virtually. Our website had almost 3000 hits over the weekend and with 75% of these being first-time visitors to the site, it demonstrates the amount of positive interest being generated within the local community about our school. If you haven’t had a chance to look, I would encourage you to visit the school website and there is a link at the bottom of this section. I am so proud of the significant improvements at the school and its continued journey to fulfil our vision to be the ‘school of choice’ in our community. Our transition groups, Years 7 and 12 are both full, as are the majority of our other year groups with waiting lists. This week Year 11 have been sitting their initial exams in English, Maths and Science as we continue our preparations with them for their GCSE exams next summer. These exams are to support their continued learning, identify gaps in knowledge and lay the foundations of assessment for their GCSEs. Next week, they will sit the rest of their subject exams and we wish them all the best as they prepare over the weekend. Some parents/ students have expressed concern given Scotland’s recent announcement regarding the changes to their GCSE equivalent exams next year. However, as it currently stands in England, the GCSEs are continuing as planned and we will continue to fully prepare our students for these exams. Obviously, we will update you should there be any changes. This week, I am proud to announce the newly appointed members of Student Leadership. Later in this bulletin, you will read about the Subject ambassadors, Sixth Form Captains and house Captains to add to the Student Executive. This week, Mr Hussain has been interviewing Year 12s for the position of Deputy House Captain and these will be announced next week.

We have adapted the PE curriculum as we appreciate the challenge to comply with the COVID restrictions which include no access to changing rooms. This week saw the first friendly of the year for our Under 19 football team and they won 4-3. The team play under the banner of Roding Valley and the Chelsea Football Foundation as this is part of the Football Programme that has begun this term in the Sixth Form. The students on this programme split their time between academic study alongside other Year 12/13 students and then do football training around this. The team are coached by Andrew Morgan. We are hoping to restart more of our extra-curricular clubs within the next few weeks; given our staggered timings and ‘bubble’ restrictions, these have posed a logistical challenge. It must be noted that there will be restrictions on numbers in some clubs as we move forward. This week, I have sent home some very important safety measures regarding COVID-19 self -isolation, the procedure for student sickness and actions we will take in the event of a positive case. If you missed these important letters, please click on this link but note that all parent letters can be found on the school website. https://rodingvalley.net/current-parents/ The school community retains its positive outlook and I again thank you for your support with the students, ensuring they are incorrect uniform, providing face covering, planning their direct journey times and supporting the safety guidelines outside of school. Dates for Diary:
School closes to students for half term on Thursday 22nd October, normal day.
School reopens to students on Tuesday 3rd November, normal timings.
Stay safe and enjoy the rest of the bulletin. Mrs Jenner Headteacher

I just wanted to take this opportunity to say a massive WELL DONE to all of our students in regards to their efforts with home learning! Our teachers have noticed how excellent the standard of home learning has been since September.
Please Do Note: A few parents have asked me to clarify the difference between homework and missed lesson material. Our teachers are setting: 1. Home Learning Assignments: These are HOMEWORK tasks to be done at home after being in school. They have a clear due date and can be handed in via Google Classroom by clicking 'Submit; 2. Lesson Material: Our teachers are also providing their 'lesson material' for each school week. This material consists of the resources that were used by the teachers during their lessons. These are for students who are self-isolating to use so that they can access learning. Students who are in school DO NOT have to access this lesson material. 3. Tips for Google Drive: Many students are now really making the most out of their Google Drive. We are encouraging students to create subject folders on their Google drive and store any e-copies of home learning into these subject folders. This means that no home learning/ notes/ revision notes will be lost! It is a great place to store revision material. Please do click on the video link to get some tips on submitting work and creating folders on Google drive.
RVHS Communications Update Please can we take this opportunity to remind all parents that RVHS no longer uses MyED to communicate with our parents/carers, please can we ask all parents if they have not already done so, to delete the MyED app from their phones. All parents should now have received an Activation Email for our new Communication software Edulink 1. If you have not received your activation email or if you require any support with Edulink1; please contact our Data Manager Ms Stewart on lstewart@rodingvalley.net.
Next week, the whole school focus will be literacy. Ask your child about some of the key vocabulary they have learnt across all subjects and encourage them to read for at least 20 minutes a day. Students will also engage with a number of tasks where feedback will be focused on literacy. Prizes are available for some of the best written pieces of the week! This week, our theme of the week was ‘Bereavement’; a difficult topic to discuss, but one which our students have approached maturely and had insightful conversations about during form time. Our ‘Word of the week’ was ‘Mourning’. Let’s have a look at some of the fantastic written work from our ’Drop Everything and Write’ session on Friday 9th October:

Accelerated Reader With Mr A Jones It’s been an exciting fortnight in Year 7, as Accelerated Reader is fully up and running and the quizzes are well and truly underway. It’s great to see enthusiasm for reading flourishing and a healthy level of competition between classes appearing.
Class of the Week
Having checked the leader boards, there are two classes already storming ahead, so a massive well done to 7Lithium/En1 who have quizzed and passed 169 books since starting Year 7! Just behind, with an equally impressive 131 passed quizzes for the year so far is 7Magnesium/En2 so again, well done! 7Magnesium/En2 are also the stars of the fortnight, having passed 55 quizzes over the last two weeks, the most by far! It won’t be long before you are top of the leader board, I’m sure.
It’s not just about classes though! Which Year 7s have shone this week? Massive shout out to these super readers, who have passed two or more quizzes at 100% over the last two weeks – An OUTSTANDING effort:
Ava Hazell
Luis Brophy
Amabel Kilby

Alfie Preston 7 Neon
Once again, a massive well done to all who have started quizzing. Please can I ask you to keep it up, and quiz your book once you’ve finished it! Let’s make the next two weeks even stronger. Enjoy the weekend, and if you’re looking for something new to read why not try this: A Kid of Spark tells the story of 11-year-old Addie as she campaigns for a memorial in memory of the witch trials that took place in her Scottish hometown. Addie knows there's more to the story of these 'witches', just like there is more to hers. Can Addie challenge how the people in her town see her, and make her voice heard? A story about friendship, courage and self-belief, perfect for fans of The Goldfish Boy.
Year 7 Year 7 students are very close to completing their first term with us here at Roding Valley with only two weeks until the half term break. I must say that I am extremely impressed and proud with the positive attitude they are displaying and their focus to achieve ARE points each week. It is great to see so many receiving these points on a daily basis from a number of different subject areas. I would also like to congratulate two of the year group's students Miley Opara and Isabelle Davenport who have recently gained a place on our student voice panel. Well done girls! Year 8 I would like to start by congratulating those students who have been successful in their application for the Student Voice team. We had the highest amount of applications of any Year group in the school which shows tremendous endeavour by all the Year 8's who applied. Well done to Anthony B and Brooke M, who were selected to represent Year 8 in this fantastic leadership opportunity. If you were unsuccessful in this venture, please continue to look out for the numerous other leadership opportunities on offer such as House Leaders and Subject Ambassadors. As we approach the final two weeks of this half term, I encourage all students to continue behaving in the brilliant way that we have throughout the start of this year. Your independence, hard work and application to your studies has been superb and I have enjoyed watching you all grow and progress. I would like to take this opportunity to issue a few reminders to all in our Year 8 community:
All students must attend school with a face covering to wear in communal areas or as otherwise instructed. Please also pack a spare in your bag.
You must arrive at school via the top Brook Road gate by no later than 8.35am. You will receive a late mark if you arrive after this time, and will need to enter via the 'Late Gate' on Alderton Hill.
On days when you have PE, students must wear their full RVHS PE kit, with your blazer over the top.
Miss Edwards – Year 8 Progress Leader

For their amazing effort in Science.
Year 9 It has been another good week at RVHS and I have been particularly impressed with the way Year 9 students have come to school in an orderly and calm manner. As I open the gate in the morning, the vast majority of students look ready for a productive day at school. This week during our Virtual Assembly, we have discussed Black History Month - we highlighted the important contribution that Walter Tull has made. He was the first black professional footballer and during the First World War, he was recommended for a military cross and promoted to Lieutenant despite an official ban on non-white officers. Black history matters and the contribution of Black service personnel is something that the British Army want to remember and celebrate. The character and culture curriculum focussed on Bereavement and it was also the Word of the Week throughout the school. Often a difficult subject to discuss the full spectrum of what bereavement means was brought up and students were allowed to discuss issues with their Academic Mentor, Mr Dobson – Year 9 Progress Leader

Year 10 I have had the chance to go into some year 10 classes this week and I want to say how pleased I am with the attitude and work that is being displayed within the classes. Year 10 has clearly settled into GCSEs well. We have recently sent out a survey to students which I would urge them to complete. This will help us build a picture of how students are feeling about returning to school and more broadening in the current situation. I would also like to congratulate members of 10OX/ENC for being class of the week! You have made a great start to the year, both me and your teacher are proud of you! Keep up the good work. Can I also ask that you have a conversation with your son/daughter about the importance of keeping our environment clean and tidy. We have seen an increase of litter inside and outside of our school environment which includes plastic bottles and disposable facemasks. As a Geographer it is really important to me that this stops. I would like to urge all students to have a reusable facemask for school Mr Warry – Year 10 Progress Leader

We are really looking forward to welcoming you back after your week of study leave and seeing you all around the school again!
Miss Woods & Miss Fazakerley – Acting Year 11 Progress Leader
Year 12 Sixth Form students continue to make great strides forward in coping with the adapted curriculum as a result of the pandemic and for that they deserve great credit and are outstanding role models for our younger students. Year 13 are also in the process of completing their UCAS university applications and the deadline for applications to Oxford and Cambridge is 15th October and we have several students to which this applies. I attach a link that has been sent to all students explaining the Roding Valley 'How to send off my university application'
I am also delighted to celebrate the success of our Subject Ambassadors who have been appointed for this academic year. These students have been appointed by teaching staff in recognition of their performance in their respective subjects over the past year. It recognises their diligence, dedication, enthusiasm and enormous energy they demonstrate in these subject areas. The Subject Ambassadors will represent their subjects in various tasks throughout the year and act as role models for our school community. Congratulations to all! Matt Fletcher (Director of Sixth Form)

1
Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.
2
Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.
3
Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.
4 5
Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support. Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.
6
Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.
7
Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and ChildLine all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.
8
Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.
Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.
Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
Find out how to create a Doddle Parent account and then link that account to your child with this short video:
