“Our vision is to be the school of choice for our local community, developing successful young people with high aspirations, who show respect for all and endeavour to become the very best that they can be.”

RVHS Bulletin Aspiration Respect Endeavour Weekending Friday 8th May 2020 Message from the Headteacher I really hope that everyone is keeping safe and coping well with the continued lockdown. Currently, we have not been provided with any information as to when schools will be reopening, but we may hear more of the government’s plans later this weekend. As soon as we have any updates, we will pass on this information directly. There is continued speculation in the media, but the Department of Education have today tweeted that, there is no set date for schools to reopen. Schools will remain closed to most students until scientific advice indicates it is right to reopen and the five tests set out to beat this virus have been met’. My thoughts are with all in our community, especially those families and staff who have been so sadly affected by the virus. The school may be closed to the majority, but can I reiterate that we remain totally committed to the continued welfare, education and support of all our students during this time. I would like to thank all the parents who have offered their continued support and gratitude for the learning support being offered by the school during this unprecedented time. My teachers are certainly trying all sorts of innovative ideas to engage our students with their continued learning and to help maintain both physical and mental health. It is great to see so many students engaging in the numerous virtual challenges being set. We have put together a whole package of support for home learning which includes:     

Updated Home Learning Booklet The Students Quick Guide to Using Google Classroom RVHS Guidance to Home Learning Timetable – practical advice on timing expectations Parent guidance and support around safeguarding and online security Mental Health guidance and activities

All these can be accessed via the website Home Learning COVID-19 To keep up to date with all that is happening at Roding Valley High School please do follow us on the school twitter account @RodingValleyHS, the PE department’s twitter account @RodingValleyPE, the teaching and learning twitter @RVHST&L, or our Instagram account @rodingvalleyhs. It is so positive and inspiring to see the resilience and continued celebration of the achievements and engagements of our students. Please also keep an eye on your emails for numerous other bulletins and correspondence, including our Maths Broadcast, Humanities Broadcast, Roding Reads, Roding Matters, Wellbeing Wednesday, Brain Boosters, PE Challenges and much more. This week’s Humanities have also produced an additional broadcast celebrating VE Day; this is available on our school website. The government has launched the following learning platforms, Oak National Academy https://www.thenational.academy/ and BBC Bitesize Daily lessons. Your child should continue to follow the guidelines set by the school but I have asked teachers to incorporate these great additional resources into the work being set. We will be celebrating ‘Thank a Teacher’ day on the 20th May so all nominations would be greatly received.

@rodingvalleyhs

We have started all our student welfare calls home so you should have received one, or if not this week. Please do respond to messages sent, or phone calls made, even if just to confirm that everything is well. It is so important that we preserve the mental health of our younger people whilst they learn remotely and we do recognise the pressure on families at home, please refer to my recent letter, which contains important information on how you can access additional support. Miss Dyer also often includes additional links and useful information to support mental wellbeing, in the weekly mindfulness bulletin email, so please do look out for those too every Wednesday. The Year 11’s should now have received their offer letters for our Sixth Form. Please encourage them to join the Google Classrooms which relate to the subjects they would hope to continue to study at A Level. Joining the subject classrooms will give your child access to fantastic A Level transition materials, which will help engage them and get them ready for the start of Post 16 study. If your child is not anticipating attending the Sixth form, please do contact Mrs Mason, our careers advisor, if your child would like any further support regarding their future options and pathways. She, along with Miss Reed (Yr11 YPL) are currently making contact so expect a call. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that Miss Dyer is my Designated Safeguarding Lead. She is supported by Mr Price, Mrs Low and Mrs King as well as the wider pastoral team, including all the Year Progress Leaders. In the event of you being concerned about a young person please do not hesitate to email the team at Safeguarding@rodingvalley.net. If it is an emergency and the delay will potentially allow a young person to come to harm, you should call the Police on 999. If you would prefer not to talk to a member of our team, you may also call The Essex Children and Families Hub on 0345 603 7627. Please enjoy the rest of the bulletin, a truly great celebration of the continued achievements of our students. Please do keep safe and well.

Well done to Diya Wahiwal Year 10 for her excellent essay on the consequences of the Norman Conquest on Norman England.

Debate Club has discussed the interesting topic of ‘Home-schooling for good’. The motion set was: ‘This house believes that there is no longer any need for schools as the nation is already home schooling their children’. We have had some interesting responses; here is one from Athina Christofi (8W): "A big issue with the proposed motion is that most children, especially those of younger age brackets, would struggle to understand how to plan their own lessons according to their suitable curriculum, resulting in poor or inefficient learning. What are these children supposed to do if their parents are not educated to help with this? Yes, in this day and age, we are surrounded by technology that can help with these problems, but is it really healthy for a child to be reliant on it for their education? Also, whilst some may say that schools add a lot of stress to children's lives and that its closure would help their mental health, I would argue that most actually provide effective and helpful techniques to combat stress, like school counselling and student mentoring."

Message from our Year 7 Progress Leader Miss Edwards I trust that you enjoyed our first ever RVHS virtual assembly. Our Character & Culture theme for this week was Healthy Living, and this assembly explored ideas around how to keep a healthy routine during this lockdown. Please use some of these top tips to create a healthy routine and stay healthy during this lockdown. By now, you will have had contact from your child’s form tutor, who will be touching base with you on a fortnightly basis. This is the first point of call for you, should you have any queries relating to your child’s learning or wellbeing needs. Please do feel free to email them whenever you need, instead of waiting for the fortnightly call. Over the past fortnight, our Year 7's have been participating in a form competition, by working on a Learning Project about the NHS. Students have been producing some amazing work, which has shown great recognition and appreciation for our wonderful NHS. I encourage all students to complete some more tasks from this Learning Project to put their form in the best position to win this competition. Some excellent examples of completed tasks are pictured below. I have watched with delight our Year 7's engage in the PE challenges. Some students have been very creative with their entries, gaining valuable house points for their respective houses. A special mention to Ria Blundell, who has been extra creative with her challenges and Alex S for completing the most challenges in the year group! I cannot wait to see more of you get involved in these fun challenges. I look forward to seeing you all back in school again, but for now, please stay home and stay safe.

Message from our Year 8 Progress Leader Mr Dobson As we complete another week of displaced learning I am constantly amazed by the adaptability of our School community. RVHS has moved into the virtual world, be it the truly fantastic virtual Assembly to all the lessons and mindful content that is being emailed and uploaded by the RVHS community. I thank all the Year 8’s for how they have adapted to the new norm and continue to complete and upload work for their teachers. I thank all the Parents and Carers for their continued support and perseverance. I hope you enjoy the VE bank holiday from the comfort of your homes and be mindful of the sacrifices made by previous generations during their times of national crisis and uncertainty. What the past teaches us is that resilience and positive mental attitude will bring better times. Take care and stay safe.

Message from our Year 9 Progress Leader Mr Warry Dear Year 9, I hope you are all well and safe. Remember to keep your eyes open for all of the material teachers at RVHS are producing. Please make sure you watch the assembly produced by Miss Williams. You should have all been added to your Google Classrooms for your GCSE options. Please make sure you are making a productive start to this work. If you have any questions please contact me. I look forward to hearing from you all and I cannot wait to join you all back at school when we return. Enjoy your long weekend and spend quality time with your family.

Message from our Year 10 Progress Leader Mr Ryan Hello Year 10, I hope you're keeping safe and well? It is definitely strange to not be in school and seeing you all on a daily basis. I am always available via email if you need help with anything. I hope you have settled into 'lockdown life' and aren't finding working from home too difficult? What I feel helps is having a routine. I always aim to get up and start work by 8.30am and then allow myself breaks throughout the day. I set myself targets of what I would like to complete that day and then work to that goal. We have shared a potential timetable in previous emails with you and I would follow that, if you are struggling with how to organise your day. One thing you need to try to avoid is becoming nocturnal, make sure you get up in the morning and go to bed at a reasonable time, and remember that a teenager needs around 9.5 hours sleep a night. Please make sure that you are following the instructions set for you on google classroom. It is really important that you keep up with the work or let your teachers know if there are any issues with getting it done. I know that avoiding the work is easy to do, especially if you are finding it difficult but you can't ignore it. Email me or your teachers and we can help with different strategies to get you through this difficult time. Thank you to those of you who are submitting your CVs and who are asking myself and Mrs Mason for advice. It is brilliant to see how focussed you are. If you need help on this please email either myself or Mrs Mason (dmason@rodingvalley.com) I hope you are making the most out of being with your families. It is important to remember that when we come back to school you will be working hard towards your GCSEs and before you know it, you'll be in college or 6h form and then university. Enjoy being at home and get some exercise regularly and safely and within the guidelines. I look forward to seeing you all soon. Subject: Oral Health, Sun Safety and Skin Cancer Date: May 2020

An important message for Essex schools from our Public Health and Healthy Schools Team Essex Child and Family Wellbeing Service (ECFWS) supports children, families, schools and communities to address current physical health, social, emotional and financial issues that may affect the healthy development and future outcomes of young people. Each month, we promote and support specific local, national and international campaigns by providing information and resources to schools, communities and organisations that can improve health and wellbeing for all. Our campaigns also include web links to resources for use in the classroom or at home. This month we are focusing our bulletin on the following campaigns: National Smile Month is an annual awareness campaign that takes place between 18th May and 18th June. This campaign is dedicated to raising awareness of the issues around oral health and the importance of oral hygiene so that we can all work together to achieve healthier mouths and happier lives. Sun Awareness Week this year is from the 4th to 10th of May and the aim of this week is to raise awareness for the dangers of long exposure to the sun, and to promote safety when outside. Skin Cancer Awareness Month is an annual awareness campaign that takes place every May. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the dangers of unprotected sun exposure and educate the public about the ways to help prevent skin cancer. For latest updates on Coronavirus (COVID-19), please click here

Family Wellbeing Oral Health Encouraging your child to brush their teeth can be difficult and at the moment your child’s normal routine has changed quite a lot. To help your child clean their teeth every morning and evening try using Home Starts creating a family routine during self-isolation template. You can also take a look at the very helpful Brush DJ app that plays 2 minutes of music whilst your child brushes their teeth and a useful ‘buzz’ every 30 seconds to remind them to change sides. A simple way to help your keep your child's teeth healthy is to reduce the amount of sugary foods and drinks they have. The Change 4 Life website has some great sugar swap ideas. Sun Awareness There is so much information available to us via the internet and social media that it can be confusing what advice to follow. For sunscreen and sun safety tips for you and your child, we recommend the NHS website, the advice suggests wear at least factor 30 sunscreen, apply it 30 minutes before going out and reapply it every two hours. Also, drink lots of fluids to avoid becoming dehydrated. You could try making homemade lollies made from very diluted fruit juice, or eat food with high water content such as watermelons for snacks. In this lovely warm weather, please always remember to stay with your child if they are using a paddling pool in the garden. To keep your child safe around ponds follow the charity RoSPA’s advice of choosing either: 1. Grill it – cover the pond with a rigid metal grille 2. Fence it – make sure it is at least 1.1m high and gates are kept locked 3. Fill it – transform your pond into something else like a sandpit whilst your children are young. For further advice and guidance during this challenging time, please visit our Covid-19 Pandemic Resource Hub.

At RVHS, we use Show My Homework; an account has been created for you to keep up to date with your child’s homework progress from home.

What is ‘Show My Homework’? Show my Homework is a simple online solution for students and parents to view homework details and upcoming deadlines. Mobile apps and notifications ensure you always know what homework your child has and when it’s due.

How to Log In and See the Work Set  Go to www.showmyhomework.co.uk/pin  Or you can download the app.  Students can log in with their Gmail account. If this doesn’t work, they can use their student Pin that they were originally given. If they can’t access their Pin and cannot log in at all, please contact Ms Larkinplarkin@rodingvalley.net  Your child will then be able to see their homework dashboard and see what homework they have been set and what is due. When they have completed their set homework- please remember ‘tick’ it off.

What are PINs? PINs are unique codes that ‘Show My Homework’ has assigned to each parent that allow us to confirm their identity on initial login. PINs are then only be used as a backup in case you forget the memorable login details. Students do not need a pin to be able to access their homework. They can gain access to their Show My Homework account though their Gmail account.

You are now able to access your account and view all the homework that has been set for your child. If yourself or your child experience any difficulties with using ‘Show my Homework’ or you no longer have your pin, please contact Miss Larkin: plarkin@rodingvalley.net

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum. Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature. Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned. These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.
