Where they’ve gone and where they are now!

letter from the PResident/CH ief Administrator

Dear Friends, As I write this note at the start of the second semester of the school year, I wish you and your families the happiest and healthiest of years! Since our last of issue of Logos we have begun several initiatives to help position Northwest Catholic for the future. The first of those initiatives is a brand examination being conducted by GO Media. As we look to the next 50 great years, we feel it is time to self-reflect on our external brand and reinforce our message for the future. As a result of this study, we have created a new value proposition that we feel best defines our school: Today’s students become tomorrow’s leaders at Northwest Catholic High School. As Connecticut’s premier co-ed college preparatory school, Northwest Catholic provides a welcoming yet challenging environment that gives students a place to excel and belong as they discover their own potential. From our rigorous academic curriculum, to our exceptional athletic teams and performing arts, to our inspiring student life and character-building activities, Northwest Catholic provides opportunities for all students to learn and grow in a remarkable educational setting grounded in Catholic faith and moral values. Northwest Catholic’s diverse student body, expert faculty and staff, and forward-looking philosophies make it the ideal place for tomorrow’s leaders to prepare for success in our evolving global society. As we introduce our new brand strategy this spring, we will simultaneously be unveiling a brand new website that takes into account all of the new technology offered today. This new website will be much more user-friendly and be able to cover much more than we possibly could in our current platform. I also hope if you are an alum reading this issue that you will download the new Alumni App that has been created for Northwest Catholic. This new application can connect you with NWC alumni anywhere in the world. We are so very excited to be able to offer this to you free of charge to help you reconnect with your classmates. All of these new initiatives will allow us to bring more consistency to our brand and reinvigorate school sprit among current students, families, alumni and donors — and broadcast that excitement to the outside world! I hope to see many of you on June 4 as we celebrate the 50th graduating class of Northwest Catholic at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford. Sincerely,

David C. Eustis President & Chief Administrator

his issue of Logos focuses on NWC alumni and what they have accomplished since they last walked the halls of this school as students. Dozens of alumni shared their stories – some taking a path of unexpected twists and turns and others going down a path they never foresaw when they were in high school. The stories of their journeys were all wonderful – a testament to the diversity of talent that has come through NWC – but that made the decision as to whose stories to share that much harder. In the end, we decided to present the stories of 10 alumni, two from every decade. These alumni have pursued careers in law and education, journalism and cooking, and a whole host of other areas. While this is by no means meant to be a complete representation of what NWC alumni have accomplished, it does paint a small picture of the impact Northwest Catholic has had in the world. A special thank you not only to the alumni featured in this issue, but to all of the alumni who have shared their stories, in this issue and in issues past. Your lives continue to inspire and amaze me. So keep those stories coming. Who knows, you might be featured in a future issue!

LOGOS The Greek word or logos (pronounced lo-gaas) is defined as “word” or “meaning.” St. John’s Gospel opens: “In the beginning was Logos (the Word), and Logos was with God, and Logos was God.” The phrase “Word (Logos) of God,” found in John 1:1 and elsewhere, shows God’s desire and ability to “speak” to the human. The Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs (the founding Order of Northwest Catholic) have been noted for their effective ability to preach the word. The mission of the Dominicans is to provide intellectual formation, social communication, and service through word and action. Our publication, Logos, conveys our mission and values through this medium of the word. Logos is published twice a year by the Communications Department of Northwest Catholic High School. Amazing Alumni

Where they’ve gone and where they are now!

When he was a member of the football, basketball, baseball and track teams at NWC, Matthew Hogan ’67 never dreamed his life would turn out the way it has. He attended the University of Connecticut, playing football and running indoor track, and graduated in 1971 with a degree in Business Law. After a few years of graduate courses at the University of Connecticut and Columbia University, Hogan began working as a computer programmer for several companies in New York City, beginning work at what would become his life-long job. In 1975, he began working as a Computer Systems Analyst at the United Nations – a position he would keep for over 30 years. His work programming database systems for different UN departments, developing early UN websites and online multimedia training videos brought him in contact with hundreds of people from all over the world, from Secretary Generals, US Presidents, and Popes to the dozens of athletes and celebrities who have served as Goodwill Ambassadors. Those experiences have given him a different perspective on world events. “The UN is always exciting because every day there are so many important international events to deal with. Many good events and many tragic events are echoed in the halls, in the General Assembly and the Security Council, every day,” he said. “I have many international friends from every region of the

world. Over 33 years, my friends told me in detail all about their countries, about their regional viewpoints, their ideas and traditions.” Hogan is grateful for the values instilled in him at NWC, which helped him succeed in his UN career. “Four years at NWC gave my classmates and me time for intellectual and personal growth. The school’s positive environment inspired us to go to college and accept the challenges in our future.” Hogan would share his story with NWC students when members of the NWC Model UN Club toured the UN in 2003. His love for all things international has stayed with him in his retirement, as he continues to travel around the world, visiting 60 countries over the course of his lifetime. “I have learned about each country – its culture, traditions, customs and values. Each country has further expanded my international outlook on life.”

Richard Lamb ’67 With a career of over 40 years in the radio news business, it would seem that Rich Lamb ’67 always knew he had a voice for broadcasting. But he says that was not always the case. “At Northwest Catholic, I had a speech class with Sister Elizabeth Seton Ryan, who became my coach and mentor. She saw a talent in me I did not see in myself.” Sister Elizabeth encouraged Lamb to get involved in the Dramateurs’ productions, which he says helped lead to his career in radio journalism. “She and the late Father Bradford Colton encouraged and supported me every step of the way,” he said. “I stayed in touch with them until their deaths.” After graduating NWC, Lamb attended The University of Detroit (now the University of Detroit Mercy), majoring in Communications. That degree took him to radio stations all over the country, including WEXL in Royal Oak, Michigan; WNIC in Dearborn, Michigan; WOMC in Detroit; WXLO in New York (now WEPN); and WCBS 880 in New York, where he has worked for the past 35 years. It is a career that has taken him all over the world and has allowed him to have interviewed people as varied as Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Hoffa, John Lennon, Nelson Rockefeller, and Cardinals O’Connor, Egan, and Dolan, as well as having covered Pope Francis’ election in Rome.

For Anna Sanko ’70, life has always been about seizing opportunities and taking chances. Even before she finished her degree in Industrial Design from the Pratt Institute, Sanko jumped head first into the architectural field, working as a project designer in both Hartford, CT and New York City, before becoming a Project Manager for DuBose Associates Architects in Hartford in 1983. For more than a decade, she oversaw the design and construction of over 2 million square feet of corporate, medical, school, government, retail, and industrial facilities.

“A microphone with a CBS logo on it has been my passport into many extraordinary lives and places,” he notes. “The most memorable story I have covered, without doubt, was 9/11. It stands alone. But I count myself very lucky to have had a career which has allowed me to fly on the Alitalia jet carrying Pope John Paul II to the U.S. in 1995, and to have covered his visit to Havana in 1998, as well as his funeral in Rome in 2005.”

In 1991, though, one request began to change Sanko’s direction. She was asked for ideas and activities to engage the public in an understanding of architecture and design for the First Night Hartford 1991 festival. The program she came up with, the Architectural Awareness Happening, ran for four years and won local, national and international awards for creativity and public education. So, in 1995, Sanko decided to take a chance – leaving DuBose to begin working with schools as the founder and executive director of the Architecture Resource Center (ARC). The nonprofit design education organization uses architecture, design and engineering to interest students in learning. Her career gamble paid off – each year 2,500-4,000 students, teachers and families attend programs run by ARC and the program has expanded beyond Connecticut, reaching audiences around the country and even into Europe. Sanko says Northwest Catholic helped prepare her for her new role. “NWC provided opportunities for me to excel as a leader and work with people – as co-captain of varsity cheerleaders, president of the Girls Leader Club, captain of various sports teams, and tutor

in Hartford schools,” she said. “NWC provided an environment that allowed me to explore ideas, gain confidence to communicate ideas, and develop the courage to take enlightened risks.”

creating projects and displays for First Night Hartford from 1991 to 1995; OpSail/CT 2000; and the 1995 Special Olympics World Summer Games; and has implemented hands-on design educational activities for 2,000 children and adults at Hartford’s City Hall during Envisionfest 2012 and 2013. But what she remembers the most is the impact ARC has had on children.

In her role as Executive Director of ARC, Sanko works to develop partnerships with schools, community organizations, cultural institutions, local and state government agencies, and colleges and universities to create projects and programs that address community needs. She has also been responsible for

“I especially love working with K-8 students, helping them learn how to problem-solve, communicate effectively, and work individually and most importantly together as a team. I work with about 1200 students a year and look at myself as a coach. One student commented last year ‘you talk in a way that you know that we will understand.’ I consider this high praise; it certainly had me smiling and feeling good.”

Louise Pelletier Albin ’72 Louise in West Hartford, which is still going strong after 20 years. Over those 20 years, she has catered events for some pretty amazing people – including a small dinner party at the Mark Twain House for Hal Holbrook and Dixie Carter and an amazing dinner at the Mark Twain House for the Board of Directors of Disney – including Michael Eisner, Bob Eiger, Roy E. Disney, Roy P. Disney and Sidney Poitier.

Louise Pelletier Albin ’72 has always marched to the beat of a different drummer. After graduating from Northwest she attended Trinity College in Hartford as a French Literature Major, graduating with a BA in French and secondary education certification. But education was not the path she would follow after college. While at Trinity, she spent all of her junior year and the first semester of her senior year in Paris with the IES program, taking some of her classes at “Paris IV” – part of the Sorbonne. Though she was offered a teaching job right out of college, Albin says, “I was too fascinated with food and restaurants, so I never signed that contract and never looked back.” After college, she worked in restaurants – learning just about every aspect of the business. In the mid-1980’s she moved to Eugene, Oregon, and worked in a large restaurant, The Oregon Electric Station, a historic train station with part of the dining rooms in actual train cars. While in Oregon, she started Café Louise – a dinner home delivery business. This then turned into a full-service catering business operated out of her home kitchen. When she moved back to Connecticut in 1992, she started Café

Albin says Northwest Catholic, in a way, led her to the career path she has taken. In her senior year at NWC, she was part of “Human City” – an open classroom program with teachers Bob Pawlowski, Lee Paquette and Michael Miscio. The group met not only at Northwest but also all around the city of Hartford, with their instructors including newspaper writers and editors, people in the arts and pastors of different churches. “I felt very fortunate to have my eyes opened in the early 70’s to discussions, issues and perspectives that in the regular classroom, in those days, would not necessarily have taken place,” she said. “It opened my eyes to more worldly ideas, cultures, beliefs and perspectives with incredible cultural diversity.” It also led to her love of good food, which has served her well in her catering business. “I have vivid memories of Mr. Miscio sitting in my kitchen at my home with a wooden salad bowl in his hands, rubbing a clove of garlic on the bottom and explaining to us how that imparted its flavors before he proceeded to make us an incredible Caesar Salad,” she remembered. “I have always felt that Northwest provided me with an incredible education with an amazing faculty. It was one of those times in my life that had an almost magical feel to it.”

O’Connor would go on to tell the stories of that world. Following graduation from Northwest Catholic, she attended Northeastern University in Boston, where she majored in Communications and interned at Channel 7 in Boston. After graduating from Northeastern in 1990, O’Connor began her career in broadcast journalism, working all over the country, including jobs at WATR in Waterbury, Fox 61 in Hartford, Channel 4 (CBS) in Denver, NBC 30 in Hartford, and two television stations in Providence. She is currently the morning anchor for Channel 3 Eyewitness News, the CBS affiliate in Connecticut, where she has worked for almost 9 years. As a TV anchor and reporter, Irene O’Connor ’85 has always enjoyed words. She developed her love for story-telling while in high school. “I enjoyed my English and History classes at Northwest Catholic, including reading some of the classic works of literature and learning great writing skills which are central to my job as an anchor and reporter,” she said. “I also enjoyed working in my community as a volunteer when I was a student at Northwest. It opened my eyes to a larger world around me.”

“I enjoy being able to tell people’s stories and communicating with people when they first wake up and start their day off with our newscast,” she said. “I feel that we have a great relationship with our viewers and I am so blessed to be able to work in the state where I grew up and cover the communities that I know so well.” She adds: “I loved Northwest Catholic because it was like a true family with students and staff with so much support and love to prepare us for college and beyond!”

Kimberly May-Bailey ’88 has almost always seen herself as a champion of those who did not have a voice for themselves. That character trait was visible early on in her time at Northwest Catholic, when she developed the Black History Program at NWC in 1985, informing the student body of the many contributions that African Americans have made to society during our morning announcements. “I saw how my fellow students were aware of the struggles of African Americans but they were not aware of the contributions that were made by African Americans,” she said. “I still was not sure of my career path, but I had the gift of public speaking and I was not afraid to stand up for what was right and just. The law is where I thought I would end up.” That changed her senior year, when she participated in the ACTS (A Chance to Serve) class. “It was the beginning of me thinking that I need to do something that utilized the gifts that God has blessed me with,” she remembers. “NWC gave me the opportunity to develop academically, socially, but most of all spiritually. Northwest taught me that I am my brother’s and sister’s keeper.” May-Bailey would go on to major in English and Business at Albertus Magnus College, followed by studies at the UCONN School of Social Work. Then she began her career of service, starting at My Sister’s Place III – a program that works with women who have mental health issues and provides them with

support to live independently. She would then spend 14 years at the Urban League of Greater Hartford, eventually becoming Director of Comprehensive Family Services. Most recently, she has worked with Catholic Charities in the

Archdiocese of Hartford. She is currently the Director of Community Services, overseeing the Matthew 25 Scholarship Program at Northwest Catholic; the Integrated Family Violence program for individuals experiencing domestic violence; ASPIRE – an employment and financial literacy case management program; Basic Human Needs, which assists families in achieving stability; and Cathedral Green – a 28 unit supportive housing facility in the former Cathedral of St. Joseph School in Hartford. Throughout her career, she has focused on living out the Matthew 25 scripture verse: ‘For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will

answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ And the King will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ “I know that the trials and tribulations of being a social services servant is hard work. That hard work pays off when I am out in the community with my family and people I have not seen in years will come up to me, hug me and tell my children how I have saved their life or that they are doing well because I showed them some compassion or provided them with services,” she says. “Many people look for careers that net them monetary wealth; I chose a career that has afforded me spiritual wealth and fulfillment and for that I am truly blessed and grateful!”

degrees from the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut. In 2002 he was hired as a 5th grade teacher in East Hartford, where he worked for four years. This was followed by a year as a Teacher in Residence at the Connecticut State Department of Education in the School Improvement Unit. Then, in 2007, Nesmith went to work in Hartford as an intervention resource specialist for the assistant superintendent. In 2009, he became the principal of SAND School in Hartford – a K-8 neighborhood school. During his time there, the school was recognized as one of the state’s most improved schools by the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now. Nesmith was also recognized by the Connecticut Association of Schools with the William Cieslukowski First Year Principal Award for his impact on the school in his first year. He says Northwest Catholic helped give him the tools to succeed.

For Desi Nesmith ’97, education has always been a priority. “I knew I wanted to go into education and Northwest Catholic provided top notch educators who were role models and great examples to follow,” he remembers. “I took religion with Ms. Burke, math with Ms. Hart and Mrs. Van Brocklin, science with Mrs. Murphy and I also had Mr. Carney and Mrs. Hennessy. These were some of the teachers who helped to shape the type of educator that I wanted to become.” Following graduation from Northwest Catholic, Nesmith pursued a career in education earning his bachelor’s and master’s

“Northwest helped to prepare me by providing rigor, very high expectations and opportunities to serve through ACTS with Mrs. Gillespie. I still remember our trip to Chicago to work in the homeless shelter and helping to organize the clothing drive,” he said. “Those were some of the experiences that Northwest Catholic provided that not only helped shape my career, but the person that I am today.” Today, Nesmith has returned to his roots. In 2011 he became the principal of Metacomet School in Bloomfield – the elementary school he attended as a child in 1st and 2nd grade. “The best part of my job is that that no two days are the same. When you work with kids, everyday is different,” he said. “At Metacomet I am surrounded with great kids and the best and brightest teachers in the business. I can honestly say that I love to come to work.”

C over STo ry Emily Graham ’98 can say without a doubt that Northwest Catholic had a strong influence on her career choice. Now an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Oklahoma State University, teaching courses on medieval society, medieval and Tudor England, women’s history and Western Civilization, her love for those subjects began in high school. “My interest in those topics owes a lot to Mr. Kelly’s World History course, Father Bock’s Church History and Mr. Tressler’s HILL course, which took me to the UK for the first time and began a lifelong fascination with European cultures,” she said. After graduating NWC, Graham attended Smith College, earning a BA in English Literature and spending a year abroad in England. She spent the year after college working as a paralegal in Manhattan, but decided academic life was more her style. So she returned to her favorite country, the United Kingdom, earning her masters degree and then her Ph.D. in Medieval History at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, all while working a variety of part-time jobs, including serving breakfasts to golf tourists at a bed and breakfast, researching alumni for the university development office, and teaching at St Andrews and the nearby University of Edinburgh. While in graduate school, Graham won a Fulbright grant, enabling her to study in Italy, including at places like the Vatican Secret Archives and the cloister of the basilica of St. Francis in Assisi. “During my Fulbright year in Rome, I was a regular at the Vatican Library,” she said. “If the Swiss Guard began to recognize you, sometimes they would salute you as you passed through security to enter Vatican City – which made the crowd of tourists peeking in very curious about you! It was a real ego boost for a mere graduate student.”

For Krista Olson ’02, the career path she saw herself taking after her years at Northwest Catholic was not the path she is on now. Following NWC, she attended George Washington University in Washington, DC, graduating with a BS in Biology in 2006. Initially she planned to pursue a career in sports medicine but working for her college’s athletic department changed her career focus. “I realized that I enjoyed working more on the business side of athletics, so I shifted my focus towards that and looked for graduate programs in sports management,” going on to earn an M.S. in Sports Management from Northeastern University in Boston in 2008. That was the beginning of Olson’s career in sports marketing. Since graduating Northeastern University, she has worked as the Director of Marketing and Game Operations for the

Following graduate school, Graham began her career as an educator, working for three years as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the History Department at the University of Central Florida, before moving on to Oklahoma State University. “My own approach to teaching is based in part on the great teachers I have had, and several of my Northwest Catholic teachers are among the most memorable,” she said, adding that Northwest Catholic taught her some invaluable skills. “I could not have embarked on my career without the solid foundation in critical thinking and writing skills that Northwest Catholic gave me. Thank goodness for Mrs. Juda’s sophomore English class! Her lessons on how to do a research paper were invaluable in college. In fact, now that I assign research papers to my own undergraduates, I wish they had all had a teacher like her.”

Boston Blazers, a professional lacrosse team, and in sales and marketing at the New England Sports Network (NESN) – the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins sports network. She is now the Marketing Manager of the San Francisco 49ers – managing the team’s brand strategy and all 49ers advertising, retail marketing and email marketing. She also works in planning and executing the team’s events, as well as game day entertainment and operations. For Olson, the highlight of her career so far has been working at the 2013 Super Bowl in New Orleans. The marketing team was responsible for the branding of the team’s practice facility, hotels, and the gifts and events during the week leading up to the game. These included the team’s grassroots efforts in ‘painting NOLA red’ by hosting events with the Gold Rush cheerleaders and the Niner Noise drum line, as well as a postgame event. “Northwest Catholic provided a well-rounded liberal arts education that provided me direction to pursue all of my future career endeavors with a more complete perspective and view of business, culture, and the world,” she said.

Will Dodds ’08 soccer’ really appealed to me. I think that soccer serves as a unique platform for international relations in today’s world. People differ tremendously in terms of cultures and ideologies, but one thing that is basically uniform around the world wherever you go is a love for the game of soccer.”

After graduating from Northwest Catholic, Will Dodds ’08 headed off to Duquesne University to study international business and journalism. Following his graduation from Duquesne, he started his career as a reporter/editor for Paint Bid Tracker, a bid tracking service run by Technology Publishing Company in Pittsburgh. But that’s when his life path took an unexpected turn. During his job search, he had seen an advertisement for an internship with the Cameroon Football Development Program, a non-profit organization based jointly in the US and Cameroon that uses soccer as a vehicle for sustainable development in underserved areas of Cameroon. Dodds looked into the position, but since it was an unpaid volunteer position, he decided he needed to find paid work first, before volunteering with any group. The job with Paint Bid Tracker meant that he now had the means and the opportunity to do volunteer work at night and on the weekends. “My interest in the program was initially sparked by my love for soccer. I also want to work professionally in the international realm, whether in business, trade, or development,” Dodds said. “The combination of working internationally and working ‘in

The goal of the program is to foster youth soccer development, using the game to teach life skills to the underprivileged children of Cameroon and help them mature, while helping adults develop leadership skills. Dodd says the adult component is even more important than the group’s work with children, noting “Empowering just one adult with the skills he or she needs to be an effective leader may allow CFDP to reach 10 or 20 of the children with which the leader works.” In helping the program, Dodds turned to his alma mater. In April of 2013, members of the NWC community donated new and used soccer equipment to the program, including 100 complete sets of uniforms as well as items like shoes, shin guards and soccer balls. Other local soccer clubs and sports stores also participated in the collection effort. Dodds then spent four months in Kumba, Cameroon, bringing some of the donated equipment with him and shipping the rest of the 52 boxes. His experience establishing soccer leagues and coaching in Cameroon was life-changing – so life-changing, that even though he has resumed his work with Paint Bid Tracker, Dodds hopes to return to Cameroon and continue sharing his love of soccer and teaching life skills to children and adults across that country.

N E WS FROM WAM P NWC Bids Farewell to Class of 2013

Northwest Catholic’s Class of 2013 graduated on June 5, 2013 in a beautiful ceremony inside the majestic Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford. Bishop Peter Rosazza of the Archdiocese of Hartford presided over the school’s 49th commencement. Renowned environmental attorney Elizabeth Collins Barton ’70 delivered the inspirational Commencement address, and Sarah Gillespie ’13 of Manchester and Emily Kearney ’13 of Simsbury gave the valedictory and salutatory addresses, respectively. The Class of ’13 had 169 students, including 23 whose parents were also Northwest Catholic alums, and they came from 30 towns. West Hartford is home to the largest number of graduates (44), followed by Bloomfield (19) and Windsor (18). A total of 83 students graduated with honors or highest honors. The vast majority of the graduating class – 99% – is college bound, headed to schools like Harvard University, the University of Notre Dame, Georgetown University, Cornell University, Boston College, and the University of Connecticut, to name just a few. The class included six National Merit Finalists; one Scholar in the National Hispanic Recognition program; seven National Merit Commended Students; three students who were named “Summa Scholars” by the Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Hartford; nine Division I athletes; one Ivy League athlete; five NESCAC athletes; and 12 students who plan to play Division II or III sports in college. “We are very proud of the Class of 2013,” said Principal Margaret Williamson. “They have grown and matured and provided great life to the school over their four years. We wish them the best in their future endeavors, even though they will always belong at Northwest Catholic.”

All in the Family Among the graduates of the Class of 2013 was the school’s first third generation graduate. Arianna Montalvo ’13 graduated from the same school from which her parents, Luis Montalvo ’95 and Tertia Melluzzo Montalvo ’95, did. NWC is also the same school from which Tertia’s parents, Kathleen Melluzzo ’67 and the late Michael Melluzzo ’66, graduated over 45 years ago. The three generations of female NWC graduates posed during a reception held for the Class of 2013 after their Baccalaureate Mass.

Big Bad On May 17, 2013, the NWC Dramateurs presented the one-act play Big Bad. The play tells the story of the most notorious criminal in the fairytale world, the Big Bad Wolf (Connor Giblin ’13), who is being slapped with a class-action lawsuit by the countless quirky characters he has wronged. The two greatest legal minds in the Enchanted Forest – the Evil Stepmother (Sara Ball ’13) and the Fairy Godmother (Danielle Lewczyk ’13) – clash on live Court TV in a trial that will be remembered forever after. It is up to the jury – the audience – to decide, when the doddering old Judge (Charles Quinn ’13) invites them to determine the outcome of the trial and the play! The production was directed by Abbie Reed ’13 and Savannah Gaston ’13.

Connecting with Classmates – One Hug at a Time Graduation day for the Class of 2013 marked not only the end of the students’ four years together, but also the end of one senior’s quest to get to know each classmate a little better. At the beginning of her senior year, Chayla Alston-Smith ’13 was challenged by one of her teachers to find a way to make senior year different than any other year of high school. “Mrs. Gillespie offered our class a goal for ourselves, suggesting that we each come up with a challenge to complete over the course of our senior year.” After thinking about, Alston-Smith knew just what she would do. “I love hugging,” she said, “so I thought it would be cool to hug every person in my class.” So over the course of the school year, that is just what she did – hugged each and every one of her 168 classmates and took a photo to commemorate each hug. Her classmates were fine with her request for a hug. “They knew I liked to hug and I was happy and jolly,” she said. “They enjoyed it and I enjoyed it.” Besides helping her get to know her classmates better, Alston-Smith says the project has changed her perspective on people. “It showed me that people are a lot nicer that I thought,” she said. “They’re just really nice.” Some of her favorite hugs were with her closest friends, but other hugs were memorable because of the person’s impact on AlstonSmith during her time at NWC. One of those students was Will

Carew ’13. “My sophomore year, when I turned 16, I invited him and some of his other friends to my birthday party,” she said. “His friends decided to do something different but did not tell me they were not coming. Will did come. It really meant a lot to me that he came and it was really nice of him.” She also enjoyed sharing hugs with the international students. “We don’t usually talk,” she said, “so it was nice to spend time and connect with them.” And what will she remember the most from this project? “All the smiles that I got from people and their openness to the project. It was just a really nice feeling to share with all my classmates.”

Northwest Catholic Welcomes Large Freshman Class Northwest Catholic welcomed the 168 members of the Class of 2017Â on August 28, 2013. The students in the freshman class, the largest class in the school, come from 33 towns across Connecticut and Massachusetts, with the most coming from West Hartford (39), Windsor (21) and Hartford (14). Four international students are part of the class, as well. Members of the Class of 2017 were helped on their first day by 100 Freshman Contacts, members of the Class of 2014 who volunteered their time to lead orientation activities for the freshmen and help them find their way around the school. More than two dozen students transferred in to grades 10 and 11, including seven international students. Northwest Catholic now has a total of 19 international students, coming from China, South Korea, Vietnam, India and Mexico. This summer the school replaced all the exterior windows with new, more energy efficient windows which also complement the style of the atrium. With the new windows, the school is hoping to save an estimated $30,000-$40,000 in heating costs each year and keep the classrooms comfortable. New curtains, including the main stage curtain, as well as rigging were installed on the William H. Mortensen Stage in the Richard

c ur r en t par ent ho no r ro l l of donors Northwest Catholic is fortunate to receive considerable financial support each year from the parents of our students. Recognizing that tuition alone does not cover the cost of a child’s education, many parents choose to make a gift to the Northwest Catholic Fund that helps subsidize the difference between the actual cost and the tuition. These important gifts make it possible for us to maintain a reasonable tuition relative to other private schools. Additionally, parents support Northwest Catholic through other gifts to endowment and capital projects. We are indeed grateful to these parents for the investment they have made in enhancing the educational experience we are able to provide to our students. Parents contributed $61,082 to the Northwest Catholic Fund, with total parent giving amounting to $145,137.

faculty & s taff h on or roll of don o r s

The Northwest Catholic faculty, supported by administrators and staff, devote their time and energy to students’ intellectual, social, psychological, and spiritual development. As the core members of the school’s learning community, the faculty is dedicated to the maintenance of a stimulating and enriching educational environment. While that dedication is most obvious in their attention and concern for students, it also appears in the generosity with which faculty and staff support the school’s mission. Daniel J. Endowed and Annual Scholarships For more than 20 years, alumni, parents, friends, and organizations have chosen to honor an individual, a family, or a mission while helping students in financial need by funding an endowed or annual scholarship. A portion of the annual earnings of an endowed scholarship fund ensures that needy students can take advantage of the educational opportunity available at Northwest Catholic. Endowed scholarship funds are essential to ensuring an economically diverse school community and are a critical component in NWC’s tradition of supporting students with financial need. Endowed scholarships may be initiated with a gift of $25,000. Annual scholarships may be established with a gift of $5,000 or more, provided it is the donor’s intent to make a multi-year annual commitment. Endowed Scholarships

SPRING ’13 Baseball It was another successful baseball season for Northwest Catholic Head Coach Cory Carlson and his team. The Indians posted an impressive regular season record of 15 wins and 5 losses, playing in the very difficult Central Connecticut Conference. Such success can be credited to the leaders of the team, who made sure the program was headed in the right direction. William Carew ’13, Michael Crispino ’13 (MVP, All-Conference) and Andrew Dornfried ’13 worked together to create an outfield that was top notch, while Ryan Coursey ’13 and Brendan Fox ’13 (Coaches Award) completed an infield that was among the

best in the state. Senior outfielder Maxwell McCarron ’13 and designated hitter Devin Stewart ’13 also made key plays for the team as they made their run in the State Tournament. John Arel ’14 returns on the mound for the Indians next season after earning All-Conference honors during his 2013 campaign along with Connor Dunn ’14 and Taylor Luciani ’14, while Dylan Robinson ’14 and Hunter Tralli ’15 look to lead the offense and anchor the defense.

Softball The Northwest Catholic Softball team, under the direction of Head Coach Kate Mayer, finished their season with a record of 4 wins and 16 losses, after facing off against CCC West powerhouses week in and week out. With underclassmen making

The lone senior, Kristen Young ’13 (MVP, All-Conference), finished off her successful career as a leader in stolen bases as well as ranking among the best in Northwest Catholic history in batting average. Juniors Alisha Collazo ’14 (Coaches Award, All-Conference) and Kelly Shannon ’14 look to lead the program next season as the Indians return over 90 percent of their varsity roster.

Boys’ Lacrosse Michael Crispino ’13 winds up to pitch, while Taylor Luciani ’14 is ready to make the play at first base.

the players buy into the system. Not for Peter Vlahakis! He knew that this group of lacrosse players at Northwest Catholic had the skill and talent to be one of the best teams in the state. After starting off the season with 1 win and 6 losses, the NWC Boys’ Lacrosse team began to doubt themselves. But their coach kept the team working on the basics, knowing that it would all pay off going forward. After that seventh game, the team posted an impressive 8 wins and 1 loss to finish up the regular season and earn a spot in the CCC Tournament, where they were CCC Co-Champions. Seniors Arnoldo Ballestas ’13, John Connors IV ’13, Alexander Hunter ’13 (All-Conference), Ryan Jendraszek ’13

(Coaches Award), Brian Kelleher ’13, Austin McCarthy ’13, Ian McCarthy ’13, John McKenna ’13 and Chris Thomas ’13 provided tremendous leadership when the team needed it most. Juniors Chris McLaughlin ’14 (MVP, All-Conference), Ryan Donohue ’14 (AllConference) and Aidan McDonnell ’14 (AllConference) helped lead the offensive attack for the Indians. With a large number of players returning for the 2014 season, Peter Vlahakis and his staff are excited to get back out there!

Anchoring the defense for Northwest Catholic was Maggie Rose ’14 (All-Conference), along with Bourdon. Girls’ Tennis Best team in school history just scratches the surface for what Coach Stan Piorkowski and the Girls’ Tennis team accomplished last year. Led by #1 singles player Anna Case ’15 (MVP, AllConference), #2 singles player Angela Miguel ’15 (All-Conference) and the doubles teams of Magda Lenczweski ’13 (Coaches Award, All-Conference) and Gabriella Giannone ’15 (All-Conference), and Rachel Poirier ’14 (All-Conference) and Grace Deneen ’14 (All-Conference), the Indians would boast an incredible 16-0 regular season record, losing only 10 sets all season. These six ladies would lead the Indians into the playoffs as the #1 seed in the Class S State Tournament. After an impressive 7-0 victory over Seymour in the first round of the tournament and a 4-3 victory over Valley Regional, the Indians would lose to perennial powerhouse Weston in the semi-finals, ending their magical run. Northwest would make their mark on school history with an 18-1

record, as well as being the first team in school history to send four individuals or teams to the state tournament. None of this would have been possible without the leaders who guided the program. Lenczewski, Phoebe McGrath ’13 and Kelly Weiss ’13 will be missed next season, as Coach Piorkowski looks to Cronin, Miguel, Giannone, Poirier and Deneen, along with Amy Cao ’14, Emma Deneen ’14, Katherine Marti ’14, Kristen Marti ’14, Mary-Kathryn Rogers ’14 and Charlotte Carew ’15 (All-Conference) to continue to put the Northwest Catholic Indians on the map.

Boys’ Golf Every single year, Head Coach Scott Fletcher keeps on leading his Boys’ Golf Team up the ranks as one of the best in the State. After graduating his entire Varsity squad in 2012, it looked as though the rookie team was going to have a rough road to head back to the top. Playing in one of the most competitive conferences in the state, the Northwest Catholic Indians posted a regular season record of 5-11. Seniors Tyler Stites ’13 (MVP) and Walter Hansen ’13, along with freshman Chris Butler ’16 (Coaches Award), helped lead the Indians into the CIAC State Tournament, where they looked to defend their championship. Gillespie was the state champion at 800 and 1600 meters, having been named All-State in each of her four years. Juniors Rose O’Brien ’14 (All-Conference) and Allie Kaehrle ’14 (AllConference) were also named All-Conference in the 300 meter hurdles and high jump, respectively, with Allie winning the high jump at the CCC West championship meet by clearing 4’10”. Seniors Banevicius, Haley Derlinga ’13, Lindsay Dombrosky ’13, Gabrielle Foster-Bey ’13, Gabriela Garcia ’13, Giangreco, Gillespie, Alexandra Houton ’13, Jordano, Lathrop, McKenna and Catherine Sullivan ’13 have all left wonderful memories behind from their time at NWC. Thank you for all of the excitement of the past four years!

In his 2nd year as Head Coach of the Girls’ Golf team, Jeff Przech ’92 entered the season understanding that the team was young, with few returning players who had varsity experience, but still expecting that his team compete in each and every match they played. It did not seem to matter that they were young as Sadie Martinez ’13 (MVP, All-Conference, All-State) and Emily Stanwick ’13 led the team from the very beginning. From sessions on the driving range to putts at the end of practice, Sadie and Emily worked with the new members of the program and taught them what it meant to be part of the Girls’ Golf team. Through their experience, dedication to the program and leadership, Sadie and Emily led the team into the State Tournament for the fourth straight year. Although the NWC Girls’ Golf team did not walk away with a State Championship, they continued to impress the rest of the state, having made the tournament 4 out of the 5 years of the program’s existence at NWC! Lauren Bellizzi ’14, Rachel Bercowetz ’14 (Coaches Award), Hannah Wade ’14 and Zoe Lavoie ’15 provided great leadership and look to lead the team next season!

Outdoor Track and Field In his third year as Head Coach of the Outdoor Track and Field Program, Head Coach Patrick Williamson ’99 certainly knows how to make heads turn during competitions. Winning the State Championship in 2012 got the word out about how good NWC Track and Field was, but Coach Williamson wanted to show them that they had some new tricks. Jared Delane ’13 (MVP, All-Conference, AllState, All-New England) capped off his brilliant track and field career with a victory in the 300 meter hurdles at the New England championship meet. Adding the event to his versatile repertoire this season, Jared swept the Class M, State Open and New England titles while setting the alltime school record. In addition to the 300 meter hurdles, Jared set school records in the 200and 400-meter dashes and was named All-New England in the 200 meter dash as well. Galo Rodriguez ’13 (AllConference) also scored points at the Class M meet and qualified for the State Open and New England championships in his specialty event – the 110 meter hurdles. It was no surprise how successful this team was, as they were led by a strong group of senior leaders who paved the way. Brendan Chambers ’13, Colin Coco ’13, Delane, Jack Dombek ’13, Doyle, Connor Giblin ’13, Grenham, Albert Innarelli ’13, Anthony Lanzarone ’13, Patrick Melanson ’13, Sean Murphy ’13, Peter Pham ’13, Charlie Quinn ’13, Ravosa and Rodriguez might be gone from the halls of Northwest Catholic, but their passion and love of the sport will carry on for years to come! Three NWC Coaches Honored for their Achievements

Three NWC coaches were honored last spring by various organizations for their contributions to Connecticut athletics. Head Girls’ Soccer Coach Todd Sadler was named the Doc McInerney High School Girls’ Coach of the Year by the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance. He was honored at the 72nd Gold Key Dinner on April 28, 2013. In his first six seasons as head girls’ soccer coach at Northwest Catholic, Sadler had a career record of 94-16-4. His team has won two state championships outright, in 2011 and 2012, and was a co-champion with Suffield in 2009. Sadler was named the 2011 Coach of the Year by the Connecticut Girls Soccer Coaches Association. In 2012, he was named the Region 1 Coach of the Year in girls’ soccer by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and was a finalist for the National Coach of the Year Award. Finally, Head Boys’ Basketball Coach John Mirabello received the Dean of Sports Award in memory of Arnold Dean at the 28th Annual Franciscan Sports Banquet and Silent Auction on June 4, 2013. Alumni News As in every school, some people who enroll at NWC as freshmen do not remain here for four years, for a variety of reasons. However, we still consider them part of the NWC family. For record-keeping purposes, NWC has followed the lead of many other schools in defining “when an alum is an alum.” The policy is that if a student completes one year at NWC, we consider them to be part of the class with which they entered, and they will be identified as “a member of the Class of ’xx.” A person in this category who wishes to be removed from or added to our database should contact Director of Constituent Relations Jane Leary at jleary@nwcath.org.
