Encore Azalea ®

Planting

SUN EXPOSURE:

Unlike other azaleas, Encore® Azaleas perform great in sunny locations that can provide four-to six-hours of sunlight a day. They also perform well in highfiltered shade as long as they receive adequate sunlight. Encore® Azaleas will grow in heavier shade locations, however this may decrease the amount of blooms. SPACING: Encore Azaleas should be planted the same width apart as the mature dimensions specify. This measurement should be taken from the center of one plant to the center of the other. For example: Autumn Angel’s mature dimensions are 3 feet wide. In order to have mature Autumn Angel plants bunched next to each other, you should plant them 3 feet apart, starting at the center of one plant and measuring to the center of the other. If you would like space between your azaleas, you should separate them by more than the mature width dimensions.

You'll need just a few

things to get started planting your Encore® Azaleas: a shovel, organic material such as pine bark, a watering hose and mulch.

GROUND PREPARATION:

1.

Encore® Azaleas, like all azaleas, are acid-loving plants and

Turn the soil well and dig a hole twice as wide as it is deep.

thrive in well-drained acidic soil. Optimal pH levels in the soil should be between 5.5 and 6.5. A raised bed is often helpful in areas where well-drained acidic soil is less available. PLANTING:

2.

Turn the soil well and dig a hole twice as wide as it is deep. Mix some organic compost or peat moss with the soil. (This is especially important if you have sandy or heavy clay soil.) Remove your Encore® Azalea from its container and carefully but firmly loosen the root ball. Set the plant into the hole you’ve prepared, making sure the top of

Mixsomeorganic material (ground pine bark is good to use) with some soil. Put a little bit of this mixture into the hole. Remove the azalea from it’s container and loosen the root ball lightly with your fingers.

the plant, water thoroughly and cover with mulch.

4.

5. Unlike traditional azaleas,

Encore Azaleas love full sun. ®

For optimal blooms, plant them in full sun (morning sun is best) to high-filtered shade.

Set the plant into your prepared hole, making sure the top of the root ball is slightly above the soil level. Make sure the root ball is moist. Pull the soil around the plant, water thoroughly and cover with mulch (shredded pine bark is good to use).

Encore Azalea ®

Care

SPRING & SUMMER PLANTING CARE: Water your Encore® Azalea well when you first plant it and keep the soil moist until winter. New azaleas will die quickly if the Autumn Sunburst™

soil dries excessively. Once established, Encore® Azaleas do not need frequent watering except in periods of excessive drought. Fertilize with the recommended levels of azalea feed soon after planting. Do not fertilize after August. FALL & WINTER PLANTING CARE: Fall is a great time to plant Encore Azaleas. New roots produced in the fall will help the azalea flourish in spring. Although less watering is necessary, do not allow the roots to become dry. Cover your young azalea when extreme cold weather approaches. As your Encore Azalea matures, it will need less winter care. Do not fertilize until after the last frost. When you do fertilize, use azalea feed as directed. PRUNING: Encore Azaleas require very little pruning to retain good form. If your Encore Azalea needs pruning, do so immediately after the spring flowering. This will stimulate new growth and help maximize summer and fall flowering.
