We are so thankful for an abundance of blessings during the past fiscal year. With the support of our donors, volunteers, friends, and employees we continue to expand our services and serve more people throughout eastern Pennsylvania while maintaining the highest levels of care.

Phoebe continues to be the regional leader in dementia care. This year, Phoebe became the only organization in the country recognized with the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Excellence in Care status for every one of its memory support neighborhoods. The Phoebe Center for Excellence in Dementia Care continues to work to create a well-coordinated network of innovative services, programs and support for Phoebe residents, caregivers, family members and the community.

Last year, we launched a new model of rehabilitation services for individuals with neurocognitive impairments called Neurocognitive Engagement Therapy (NET). This unique model incorporates an interdisciplinary team of therapists, social workers, psychologists and community life staff to provide the best therapy experience for individuals with dementia.

Additional 2013-2014 highlights: • At Phoebe Richland, we broke ground on a dramatic addition to our campus: a personal care facility featuring 72 studio and onebedroom apartments (18 allocated to memory support) and four semi-private rooms. The project, which will be completed next summer, will afford Upper Bucks County seniors access to innovative care close to home. Phoebe Richland also recently received the highest available 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and was listed as one of America’s Best Nursing Homes by U.S. News and World Report.

• Phoebe Wyncote received a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for the third year in a row and was listed as one of America’s Best Nursing Homes by U.S. News and World Report. It was also the first continuing care retirement community in Montgomery County to achieve the AFA’s Excellence in Care status.

• Phoebe Allentown won the 2013 Reader’s Choice award from The Morning Call in the Personal Care Home category. In the summer we completed construction on a new donor-funded patio at The Terrace at Phoebe Allentown, which provides residents with a dedicated outdoor space. We also made renovations to Phoebe Apartments, enhancing the lobby and front offices to allow for a more comfortable experience for residents and families when meeting with Phoebe staff.

Significant renovations to the Trexler Wing of the Health Care Center continue as well.

• At Phoebe Berks, donations fully funded the acquisition of an ADA-compliant wheelchairaccessible bus to allow residents with mobility issues to travel off the campus. Phoebe Berks also won a People’s Choice Award from Berks County Living for Top Retirement Community.

As we’ve expanded and improved our health care communities, we’ve also strengthened our pastoral care services. We recently hired a Dementia Care Chaplain who helped create a new program called Spirit Alive for our dementia residents. The program is based on Montessori practices and combines multisensory experiences with music, prayer and life reminiscences.

Phoebe Ministries was also named the Best Large Workplace in the Lehigh Valley by The Morning Call. As a further testament to our employees’ Phoebe pride, the 2014 Employee Giving Campaign raised more than $75,000 for Phoebe residents, with one facility—Phoebe Wyncote— achieving 100% employee participation.

Your Gifts at Work Charitable gifts to Phoebe Ministries make it possible to fulfill our mission and enhance the lives of the older adults we serve. We are so grateful for the many donors who make contributions that support the care we provide.

Unrestricted gifts offer Phoebe the ability to use donations where they will have the greatest impact on the lives of our residents. These gifts may be used to fund charitable care needs, support resident entertainment, or pay for costs related to Phoebe’s resident pets.

Offering charitable care to residents without personal means remains at the very heart of Phoebe’s mission. During the past year,

we were able to meet the ongoing challenges of reduced Medicare reimbursements by providing more than $12 million in charitable care to residents who would not have been able to afford the care they needed. We were able to provide this unprecedented amount of charitable care because of the generosity of our donors.

Independent living residents at Phoebe Allentown and Phoebe Berks are continuing to learn with Dakim, a computer-based, game-like program that incorporates brain fitness into their daily routines. Brain fitness is a cognitive exercise program designed to improve cognitive ability and memory. Through the support of donations for Dakim, Phoebe is able to offer this program to our residents at no cost.

The time and talents offered by Phoebe’s dedicated volunteers are as essential as our donors’ financial contributions. Volunteers are critical to providing residents with meaningful quality of life. In fiscal year 2013-14, 827 volunteers provided 54,737 hours of service to residents living at our communities.

Community Benefit 2014 Phoebe ­— Teaching Facilities for Tomorrow’s Leaders PHOEBE SERVICES PHARMACY Phoebe Services Pharmacy is a teaching facility and rotation site for Doctor of Pharmacy Candidates. During 2013-14, the Pharmacy partnered with Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy in Clinton, South Carolina to be a long term care elective site for Doctor of Pharmacy students in their final year of training. Phoebe also hosts students from Wilkes University and the University of Pittsburgh on an ongoing basis.

PASTORAL CARE: Phoebe Ministries’ Pastoral Care program plays a major part in our benefit to the community. This past year, 11 students participated in the Clinical Pastoral Education Program from the following seminaries: • Lancaster Theological Seminary • Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg • Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia • Moravian Theological Seminary Pastoral Care at Phoebe is comprised of four full-time chaplains who are board certified by the Association of Professional Chaplains, as well as three part-time chaplains. Many chaplains and community clergy volunteer their pastoral care efforts by preaching at worship services, leading Bible studies, assisting residents during Mass and Eucharistic Ministry for Catholic residents and Shabbat services for Jewish residents. Volunteers are able to guide residents during worship, Bible study, and other religious programming.

Some volunteers also serve as abiders who stay at a resident’s bedside during his or her final moments. Other volunteers are Spirit Alive storytellers on our memory support units.

SOCIAL SERVICES: Phoebe hosts Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree level social work interns yearly from the following: • Cedar Crest College • Kutztown University • Marywood University • West Chester University 6

NURSING: Phoebe Ministries provides a complete range of care for seniors, from independent living to hospice care. As such, it is an ideal place for nursing training. As a leader in senior care, Phoebe contributes to the following residency programs:

The Phoebe Institute on Aging Advisory Board and its education committee have guided Phoebe on a path that creates opportunities for aging-services professionals, family caregivers and students to learn more about the seniors who are important in their lives.

• Reading Hospital and Medical Center Residency Program • Sacred Heart Hospital Geriatric Residency Program • St. Joseph’s Medical Center Residency Program PHOEBE AS AN EMPLOYER: Phoebe Ministries employed 1,254 individuals in 2013, 322 of whom were new hires. Human Resources staff attends job fairs and advertises open positions to the following colleges and universities: • Alvernia University • Arcadia University • Bloomsburg University • Cedar Crest College • DeSales University • Lehigh Carbon Community College • Lehigh University • Moravian College • Muhlenberg College • Penn State University • Reading Area Community College • Temple University HELPING THOSE IN THE COMMUNITY TO STAY INDEPENDENT: Phoebe At Home Services is a certified care management program dedicated to exploring new ways to provide care to older persons living at home. In-home services are based on the individual’s needs, interests, and values. Since the launch of Phoebe At Home Services, the certified care management program has helped over 500 clients in the community stay independent longer.

To better meet the needs of our community residents as well as keep services affordable, Phoebe At Home Services introduced the option of incremental home care services.

Aside from offering in-home care, Phoebe At Home Services provides dementia education for both caregivers and professionals. These educational programs have served to: • Educate 115 health care professionals • Provide 60 dementia education sessions taught in the homes of caregivers • Inform hundreds of church officials Additionally, Phoebe At Home Services facilitates monthly support groups for individuals with early stage memory loss and their families.

This year, free conferences were offered in October and March. These conferences educated over 600 professionals and community members.

The first featured a healthy aging theme with a keynote by Keith Ochwat, producer of the film Age of Champions, which followed the stories of seniors competing in the National Senior Olympics. The spring conference was held at Allentown’s Temple Beth El for a second year and explored the topic of caregiving from a multi-faith perspective. A keynote was given by Eric J. Hall, founder and former president of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America and current president of Healthcare Chaplaincy Network, Inc. The use of a patient exam camera, two-way audio, and high definition photography/ video equipment allows for timely, accurate, innovative care. Phoebe Allentown offers TeleHealth for wound care and Parkinson’s disease treatment. Phoebe Berks offers TeleHealth for Parkinson’s disease treatment.

• Richland National Memory Screening Day, Phoebe Richland SENIOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING Phoebe Ministries operates eight senior apartment communities in four counties for residents with low to moderate incomes. Our staff works with the Berks, Lehigh, Union and Northampton County Area Agencies on Aging to help residents obtain the services they need to enable them to age in place. Health and educational events, as well as social activities, are held throughout the year for residents.

Significant gifts from The Century Fund and The Harry C. Trexler Trust are supporting the ongoing renovations to the Trexler Wing at the Phoebe Allentown Health Care Center.

Donor Spotlight: The Century Fund and The Harry C. Trexler Trust Phoebe is fortunate to have a strong relationship with The Century Fund and The Harry C. Trexler Trust, which have provided over $2.5 million to support the mission of Phoebe Allentown.

The Century Fund was founded by the former Call-Chronicle Publisher Donald P. Miller in 1985.

Jack Leh, on behalf of the Trustees of The Century Fund, spoke about the history behind why they support Phoebe: “Three generations of the Miller Family, starting with David Miller, have been very supportive of Phoebe Ministries over the years. Phoebe provides an invaluable service to senior citizens and our community.”

Their giving makes it possible for Phoebe to complete special projects such as building renovations and information technology upgrades. The support they provide also makes it possible to deliver care to residents who are without personal means. During the past year, Phoebe as a whole provided over $12 million in charitable care–a feat that would be impossible without the support of foundations like The Century Fund and The Harry C. Trexler Trust.

The Harry C. Trexler Trust has aided the work of Phoebe Ministries, as well as other Lehigh County charities and the City of Allentown’s park system, by providing almost $125 million in funding over the past 75 years.

Donor Spotlight: Rev. Ronald Krick Rev. Krick served on the Governing Board representing Penn Southeast Conference, and presently serves on the Strategic Advisory Council at Phoebe Richland.

Rev. Ronald Krick has been associated with Phoebe Ministries since 1997. A retired UCC minister, he has faithfully supported Phoebe’s mission by sharing his gifts of time, talent and treasure to advance Phoebe Ministries’ good work. The Krick Family made a recent gift in support of Phoebe Richland’s expansion in memory of Pauline I. Kline and Joyce Kline Krick. Consequently, the Therapy Room at Phoebe Richland will be named in their honor.

“My earliest association with Phoebe was in the 1940s, when my church took Harvest Home fruit and vegetable offerings to Phoebe. Later, I often visited residents. When my in-laws needed more care than we could provide in their homes, they were both given excellent care at Phoebe Richland. My mother-in-law, Pauline Kline, knew firsthand of the compassionate care, because she served as a physical therapy assistant at Phoebe for 18 years. I continue to support Phoebe by telling the story, serving where I can help, and giving financially. It is the least I can do in thanksgiving for how much Phoebe has blessed our family.”

Donor Spotlight: Janet K. Little, MPH, RD, LDN

“Phoebe Allentown provided my mother with the best care available. Before moving there, my mother had been fighting bone cancer for a number of years. She eventually developed a severe pressure sore that physicians said would not heal without surgery. But, with her severe condition and advanced age, surgery was not an option. Then, Phoebe Allentown accepted her application and she moved there directly from the hospital. Within a couple of weeks, her pressure sore began to reverse.

The nurse specialist and floor manager had worked together using an innovative treatment system that kept the sore dry while treating it at the same time. Due to the cancer, the sore never completely healed, but it came close. I knew that the treatment was costly. That is why I am happy to donate to Phoebe Ministries—so that they may continue to offer effective care to others.”

Janet K. Little’s mother, Mildred S. Komarnicki, passed away in February 2011. Little made a generous memorial gift in her mother’s honor after her death, and has been a sustaining donor to Phoebe Ministries because of her experiences with the organization.

Volunteer Spotlight: Diane M. Hepner

Hepner’s mother was a Phoebe Richland resident for nearly five years. During that time, she visited her mother six days a week. She was impressed with the staff and the care they provided to her mother. She also enjoyed interacting with her mother’s friends, and continues to visit with them regularly, even though her mother passed away several years ago.

Hepner says, “I volunteer because I love the residents and I want to pay back the wonderful care my mom got at Phoebe Richland from the incredible staff that worked with her.”

Diane Hepner, a retired elementary school educator and reading specialist, has volunteered her time at Phoebe Richland for five years. She has specifically been involved with a Community Life program called “Memories in the Making.” This program incorporates different weekly topics to stimulate discussions, interaction and memories of the residents’ life experiences. Residents paint watercolors as a further means of expressing themselves and capturing impressions of their thoughts. Typically, Hepner spends one day each week working with Community Life staff on this special program.
