• Phoebe Allentown completed the first stage of our repositioning effort by renovating the East Annex in the Health Care Center and the second level of The Terrace.

• Phoebe Richland received the Environmental Stewardship Award from Waste Management of Eastern PA for measures we took to reduce waste, increase recycling, and educate employees.

With your support, we have made great strides in establishing Phoebe as the leader in senior care in eastern Pennsylvania. In fact, more donors gave to Phoebe last year than any year since 2008—a 20 percent increase. We also benefited from a 23 percent rise in total dollars from individuals, businesses, churches, foundations and organizations. We would like to take a moment to share a few highlights from the past year and to update you on what your gifts have helped us accomplish.

We are proud to report that we provided approximately $11.5 million in charitable care to residents who otherwise would not have been able to afford the care they needed. This is the highest level of charitable care provided in our history, and we were able to achieve this level because of the generosity of people like you.

Some 2013 campus highlights include: • Phoebe Wyncote was listed as one of America’s best nursing homes by U.S. News and World Report and received the highest available 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for the second year in a row.

• Phoebe Berks initiated a comprehensive wellness program to allow independent living residents to stay in their homes longer and also launched a cross-campus communication plan to better connect with our residents.

As our services have expanded, we have also strengthened our pastoral care program. We recently added a part-time chaplain to work directly with the Phoebe Center for Excellence in Dementia Care, expanded our outreach to the ecumenical and interfaith communities, and included our chaplains in the Phoebe Berks wellness program to provide spiritual assessment and holistic health support.

Phoebe also received two Distinguished Service Awards from LeadingAge PA, the Pennsylvania state association for non-profit senior services providers. MaryKay McMahon, Executive Director of Phoebe Berks, was chosen as Leader of the Year, and Phoebe Wyncote was awarded the Innovation of the Year for its Change to Care Program. We are proud that Phoebe has now received both the Leader of the Year and Innovation of the Year awards twice in the last three years.

Phoebe’s legacy of care continues to grow as well.

This year we launched the Phoebe Center for Excellence in Dementia Care, which has already created six signature initiatives to standardize best practices across Phoebe campuses and crafted a strategic plan to guide development of the Center. At the same time, we were selected as the sole recipient of The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) 2013 Brodsky Innovation Grant, awarded to an innovative program or service that improves the lives of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease.

recipient of the 2013 Brodsky Innovation Grant, which will be used to create a comprehensive rehabilitation program that engages individuals with dementia in occupational, physical and speech therapies appropriate to their cognitive abilities, interests and needs.

During the past year charitable gifts have supported many special initiatives throughout the Phoebe community.

Gifts not only assist Phoebe in serving the physical needs of our residents with dementia, but also their spiritual needs. Pastoral care contributions have enabled the creation of a dedicated dementia chaplain position whose program takes a Montessori-based approach to worship that tells stories of faith in simple, multi-sensory ways. For example, instead of just talking about Joseph and his coat of many colors, Chaplain Elizabeth Buss carefully wraps residents in a multi-colored prayer shawl to engage them in the story.

Unrestricted gifts provide Phoebe with the ability to use donations where they will have the greatest impact on the lives of our residents. These funds are utilized across Phoebe’s services for a wide variety of uses such as to purchase specialized equipment, fund holiday and celebratory luncheons or support charitable care.

As charitable care needs at Phoebe continue to grow, gifts are critical to our commitment to meeting this challenge. Phoebe’s ability to provide this support means that residents without adequate personal funds do not have to worry about how to pay for their care, but can focus on enjoying their later years. During the past year we provided $11.5 million in charitable care for residents, the highest level in our history.

Phoebe’s devotion to caring for seniors is also evident in our dedication to innovation. One example is a new program and associated research made possible by a grant from the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Phoebe was the sole

Phoebe’s caring employees always provide exceptional care, and this year they also demonstrated their commitment to Phoebe’s mission through an employee giving campaign called “Charity Begins at Phoebe.” Staff contributed over $75,000 back to Phoebe, and three times as many employees made gifts than the previous year.

Volunteers contributed more than 49,000 hours of their time and talent to Phoebe last year.

According to the Independent Sector, the value of one hour of an average Pennsylvanian’s volunteer time in 2012 was $21.25. Volunteers contributed the equivalent of $1,041,483.75 to our residents.

Phoebe Ministries’ Pastoral Care program plays a major part in our benefit to the community. Phoebe Ministries provides a full continuum of care for seniors and is an ideal place for nursing training. This past year, nursing students from the following institutions trained at Phoebe:

Pastoral Care at Phoebe is comprised of four full-time chaplains who are APC board certified and two part-time chaplains. Many chaplains and community clergy volunteer their pastoral care efforts by assisting residents during Mass and Eucharistic ministry for Catholic residents and Shabbat services for Jewish residents. Volunteers are able to guide residents during worship, Bible study and other religious programming.

HELPING THOSE IN THE COMMUNITY TO STAY INDEPENDENT: Phoebe At Home Services is a certified care management program dedicated to exploring new ways to provide care to older persons living at home. In-home services are based on the individual’s needs, interests and values. Since the launch of Phoebe At Home Services, the certified care management program has helped over 400 clients in the community stay independent longer.

To better meet the needs of our clients as well as keep services affordable, Phoebe At Home Services recently introduced the option of incremental home care services. Additionally, Phoebe At Home Services incorporated on-call services to address resident needs that arise over the weekend at Phoebe Berks.

Aside from offering in-home care, Phoebe At Home Services provides dementia education for both caregivers and professionals. This past year, these educational programs have served to: • Educate 75 direct-care professionals • Inform 50 church officials • Provide 35 dementia education sessions taught in the homes of caregivers Additionally, Phoebe At Home Services provided 5 dementia education workshops to churches and the community at large and facilitated monthly support group for individuals with early stage memory loss and their families.

PHOEBE INSTITUTE ON AGING: The many members of the local community who comprise the Phoebe Institute on Aging Advisory Board and its education committee have guided Phoebe on a path that creates opportunities for aging-services professionals, family caregivers and students to learn more about the seniors who are important in their lives.

Phoebe Ministries employed 1,166 individuals in FY 2012-13. Over the fiscal year, we hired 287 employees. This year, free conferences were offered in November and April. These conferences educated a total of over 500 community members. The first featured Larry Minnix, President and CEO of LeadingAge, who discussed the importance of advocating for essential services that enable seniors to stay independent and support their growing needs. The spring conference was held at Allentown’s Temple Beth El and explored the beliefs on aging and dying from multiple spiritual perspectives. The keynote was delivered by Rabbi Dayle A. Friedman and the day concluded with a panel discussion offering views from world religions by local community members from Hindu, Jewish and Muslim faiths.

SENIOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING: Phoebe Ministries operates eight senior apartment communities in four counties for residents with low-to-moderate incomes. Staff works with the Berks, Union and Northampton County Area Agencies on Aging to help residents obtain the services they need to enable them to age in place. Health and educational events, as well as social activities, are held throughout the year for residents.

Donor Spotlight: Joan Miller Moran & Alice Anne Miller Over one hundred years ago, in 1903, our grandfather, David A. Miller, then publisher and owner of the Call-Chronicle Newspapers, was intimately involved in the formative years of what was then known as Phoebe Home. He recognized the need for a home for the elderly and for those unable to care for themselves.

Today that vision has become Phoebe Ministries, an institution that includes Phoebe Allentown, Phoebe Berks, Phoebe Richland and Phoebe Wyncote as well as several affordable housing communities. The excellent quality of care in all these places is administered by a staff which oversees and caters to the needs of its many residents.

We support Phoebe Ministries because we believe in the vision our grandfather had so long ago. We can see how far Phoebe Ministries has come; and we trust that it will continue to grow and provide the same loving care it always has.

Our step-mother, Sara K. Miller, was a resident of The Terrace at Phoebe Allentown for many years and subsequently at the Phoebe Allentown Health Care Center until she died at age 103. She was always very happy in the Phoebe environment.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: MARTHA REITZ

Volunteer Spotlight: Martha Reitz Inspiring residents and getting them to smile motivates Martha Reitz to volunteer at The Terrace at Phoebe Allentown.

Reitz first started volunteering in 2007 when her father, Rev. Phares Reitz, was a resident. She began by sharing “Travels with Martha,” telling residents about her travels with Habitat for Humanity Global Village.

Reitz took some time off from leading these discussions after her dad passed away, but returned to Phoebe in 2011 when she was looking to do “something meaningful.”

She has since become “Monday Martha,” greeting residents and guests in the lobby of The Terrace while working at the reception desk. She is always on the lookout for quotes and newspaper tidbits that she can share with the residents.

Reitz spent most of her career as a foreign language teacher in the Allentown School District and “her love for making knowledge fun is evident,” says Kathy Molinaro, Community Life Coordinator. Working with the residents reminds Reitz of her days as a teacher. She tries to give each resident 100% and likes getting to know them individually.

“The residents make me feel wonderful; they always greet you with a hug or compliment,” she says. Terrace resident Clinton “Bud” Kuhns recognizes that Reitz is a great volunteer because “she has an outgoing personality and really listens to you.”

In addition to working at the reception desk she continues to lead her travel talks and organizes other special events. Some of the most popular events include an annual Black & White Solstice party and a 1950’s party featuring popular game shows from the era.
