WILL NIAGARA WINERIES SEE A 'COMEBACK SUMMER?'
CHRIS PICKLES cpickles@metroland.com
As wineries gear up for what was expected to be the first "business as usual" season since the pandemic, cost-of-living concerns and sky-high gas prices might put adamper on that excitement and dissuade wine lovers from making the trip to Niagara.
Erin Mitchell, president of Megalomaniac Wines in the Niagara Benchlands, wants to see a "comeback summer" this year, as wineries are poised to welcome tourists back with open arms.
However, she also warns that predicting if tourists will come back in large numbers is "very difficult" and wants to see support from the government to help the tourism industry get back on its feet.

LINCOLN COUNCILLORS TURN DOWN 20-STOREY BUILD IN VINELAND
the Prudhomme's development in any way."
The major sticking points for councillors were the height, above the 18 storeys allowed in the secondary plan, and the size of individual units.
LUKE EDWARDS ledwards@niagarathisweek.com
Aproposed condo build at the Prudhomme's Landing site has been denied by Lincoln councillors.
Committee of the whole voted down a staff report that recommended amendments to the zoning bylaw that would have allowed LJM Developments to build a20- and 23-storey condo at 3221 North Service Rd. within the Prudhomme's secondary plan area. Consultants for the developers came to the May 24 committee meeting with its third proposal, but it wasn't enough.
"To me it just does not fit into this town," said Coun. Lynn Timmers. "Prudhomme's is a legacy, it's our legacy, and I don't want to see anything circumvent
"These would represent some of the smallest units in Lincoln," said Coun. Adam Russell, to consultant for the developer Franz Kloibhofer. "Why (do you) think that provision is something that would be healthy for future purchasers of those units?"
Kloibhofer said the units in the proposal, which would have been as small as 37 square metres, filled a gap in housing in the area and would provide an entry point for young professionals and others looking to enter the housing market.
"Providing units that allow people to enter the housing market is something that we're very proud of," he said.
"It's not something that is out of step with other parts of Niagara region and out toward Hamilton as well."
Councillors also had continued concerns about parking and servicing. And
together, those issues proved enough for them to go against the staff recommendation to approve the amendment with several holding provisions.
In a recorded vote, only Coun. Greg Reimer supported the recommendation.
Councillors Tony Brunet, Paul MacPherson, Mike Mikolic, JD Pachereva, Adam
Russell and Lynn Timmers, along with Mayor Sandra Easton, voted against. The town and developers had gone back and forth on this property several times. The initial proposal would have seen buildings of 25 and 28 storeys and 510 units. Eventually they sought support for buildings of 20 and 23 storeys, with 425 units. Unit density would have been 774 units per hectare and parking was at 1.25 spaces per unit, which had remained mostly constant.
The entire Prudhomme's property is more than 80 acres in size and when the project is fully built out at least 5,000 people will call it home.
"Council has said no to this particular application within the site, and now there is a process that both sides may engage in," said chief administrator Mike Kirkopoulos in a follow up email.
"Council and staff have worked tirelessly over the better part of the last halfdecade to create the vision of an accessible and forward-thinking community with the Prudomme's development."

SEVERAL FACTORS MAKE TOURISM REBOUND UNCERTAIN
Continued from front
BUSINESS AS USUAL?
This is the first season since 2019 that the wineries can operate business as usual, and Megalomaniac used the opportunity to redesign its tourism experience, refreshing the visitor area and tasting experiences, and opening a new restaurant area last year. "We wanted to take the tasting experience up a notch," said Mitchell.
In a promising sign for tourism, Richard Linley, president of Ontario Craft Wineries, said "the recent May (long weekend) saw a return to pre-pandemic level visits to our wine regions, which is likely indicative of pent-up tourist demand."
However, Mitchell warned that "by no means are we out of the woods." She said that it's difficult to predict if tourists will return in their pre-pandemic habits and is asking the government to play its part in supporting the wineries in this delicate stage.
"The government needs to do everything it can as we claw our way back," she said. "The tourism industry still needs support."
THE IMPORTANCE OF TOURISM
Tourism is a key part of wineries' business models.
Stephen Gash, general
mount, and border hurdles remain in place, wineries may be seeing fewer road trips from tourists from Quebec, the U.S. and further afield.
manager at Malivoire Wine, said "welcoming back visitors to our winery is vital to the sustainability of our business."
"Tourism is vital to our overall business and connects directly to growing our brand at the LCBO, in restaurants and online," he said.
And tourism to wineries is important to the economy of the entire region. Aaron Dobbin, president and CEO of Wine Growers Ontario, estimates that 2.4 million people visit Ontario's wine country every year.
"Wineries in Niagara are the anchors to our vibrant regional tourism cluster," said Gash. "When we thrive and prosper, so do our partners running the bed and breakfasts, the hotels, the restaurants and the local shop owners."
One important population of tourists are Quebecers, who are "big supporters of Ontario wine," according to Mitchell. Wine lovers drive down from Quebec in order to visit wineries and fill up their cars with an annual supply of wine from Niagara.
Another important group is Americans who come across the border from places such as Rochester and Buffalo.
MONEY WOES
However, as gas prices rise, cost-of-living concerns
And once they do reach wine country, "we do worry that the continuation of record gas prices could affect the spending power of our customers," said Linley. "Do customers have less money to spend once they arrive? That seems inevitable, which will have direct and indirect economic impacts on overall tourism."
At Megalomaniac, Mitchell sees the silver lining. She hopes that tourists from nearby, from places like the GTA, KitchenerWaterloo and southwestern Ontario, are tempted to stay local and go on day trips rather than go on longer excursions. "I think it could work out in our favour," she mused.
She posited that heading to Niagara is "one of the most economical ways to have a change of scenery without using a full tank of gas."
"People who live in Toronto don't have to go to Napa (or other foreign wine regions) in order to have an amazing wine experience.
"This is the year of domestic travel," she said.
STORY BEHIND THE STORY: As wineries in Niagara gear up for their first regular season since the pandemic began, our reporter Chris Pickles spoke to wineries about their hopes and concerns about bouncing back.

ABOUT US
OUR NIAGARA: BLOOD MOON
ALL PARTIES FALL SHORT ON HOUSING CRISIS
When it comes to tackling the crisis of housing affordability in Ontario, pretty much everyone agrees on what must be done: build a lot more houses.
The trouble is, none of the parties asking for your vote on June 2 have a convincing plan to achieve the ambitious goals they've set out.
We got our hopes up earlier this year when a task force appointed by the Ford government produced an admirably clear and compact report on how to tackle the issue of supply lagging behind demand.
The panel put its finger on a key reason for the problem: the fact that municipalities typically put most of their land off-limits for anything but single-family homes.
So in too many communities, you can't build duplexes or small apartment buildings, the so-called "missing middle" that would make cities denser by allowing a lot more units to be built.
But that would mean leaning heavily on municipalities whose councils usually speak for existing homeowners — the ones who want to preserve the "neighbourhood character" of their cities by keeping things just as they are. It's called "exclusionary zoning."
It was no big surprise, therefore, that when the Ford government produced a housing plan in March it conspicuously failed to address this issue head-on.
The plan made no mention of the ambitious goal the task force set out: building 1.5 million new housing units over the next decade. And it had nothing to say about exclusionary zoning.
At least the municipal affairs minister was frank about why he didn't follow through with the task force's key recommendation: he didn't want to upset towns and cities. "They're just not there yet," he said.
He may be right. But we need to get there given how serious the national housing crisis is.
Voters who want to make up their minds based at least partly on which party would best tackle the crisis of housing affordability will find more to chew on in the platforms put forward by the New Democrats, Liberals and Greens. But, on this same crucial point, the opposition parties also fall short.
On the positive side, both the NDP and Liberals include the goal of building 1.5 million new homes over the next 10 years. But that won't be achievable unless cities allow denser housing across much more of their area; the time is long gone when just building endless suburbs on empty land could be justified.
The opposition parties actually have quite a bit to say about exclusionary zoning. They clearly recognize that it's a problem. But when it comes to actually acting on this, they're awfully vague.
The key to loosening up the housing market is more houses. And right now none of the parties are really stepping up.
LETTERS & COMMENTARY
WE ARE ALL STILL IN THIS TOGETHER - PLEASE CARE ABOUT OTHERS
It is with both sadness and anger that I write.
The COVID-19 'Rules of Engagement' are so polarizing among our community, that I just don't see any middle ground.
It is terrible that our Provincial government has chosen politics over our collective wellbeing, and it is even worse that they have assigned oversight of health mandates to individual businesses.
The old adage "Just because you can do something, doesn't mean it's the right thing to do" was never truer than right now. When mask mandates were lifted, common sense should have prevailed. Small local business owners who are catering to a predominantly elderly and vulnerable population, such as hair salons, should have directed their
employees to continue to protect their clients by wearing masks.
Also owners who are not requiring employees to be vaccinated and boosted when the nature of their services places these unvaccinated employees in close contact with compromised individuals allows for the possibility of aerosol transmissions of this highly contagious virus. This is just irresponsible. There is a need for us to stop enabling the selfish behaviour of those who refuse to see beyond their own entitlement.

the images of mass graves, body-strewn streets, faces of human suffering and hellscapes that the Russians are leaving behind are "cinematic spectacle."
Few people are under the illusion that the Americans are innocent saviours in this conflict, least of all some of the contributors to the media sources named. To suggest that there have not been efforts toward a diplomatic solution is another distortion of facts.
The knee-jerk hawkish pushed by the American military-industrial complex is a danger to be sure. But so too is a knee-jerk rejection of military options in this case, especially when driven by the politics of anti-militarism and the "cheap binaries" of American right/left divides.
More serious, informed and realistic discussion of what should be done is what is needed.

The month of June is when we celebrate two important peoples. This is the month of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, and it is also Indigenous History Month. It is also Pride Month, where we celebrate our 2S+LGBTQQIPAA community members.
LETTERS & COMMENTARY BLIND TO PROBLEMS IN EDUCATION
Facts are important in regards to the many naysayers about the problems in our education system.
The main issue is that education costs are going up while student results are getting poorer, making it more difficult for students to be successful in today's complex marketplace.
The teachers' unions always want more money and smaller class sizes so more teachers can be hired, who are all forced to pay union dues and so fattening the union's treasury box.
That and political activism are the unions' main objectives.
However, research has shown that the dropping

and participation in events that celebrate people from these communities.
On that note, here are some resources to help you all understand these important people in our Niagara community.

This is not an exhaustive list by any means. There is so much more out there for celebrations. Often, I get asked where to start. Here, with this list, is a good place to start. When you eat that strawberry, our first of the berry medicines, think of us Indigenous People. We call it the Heart Medicine because when you cut it in two, it looks like our heart, something we need to have en-

student results is not because of larger class sizes or the number of available teachers, but the quality of teaching. The provincial EQAO tests have shown serious declines in student performance as did the PISA test for International Student Assessment by the OECD.
As a result of this troubling situation more parents have taken their children out of the public school system and enrolled them in private schools or implemented extra tutoring.
Instead of denying these serious problems people should be more forthcoming by acknowledging these facts and start putting students first.

SHRINKING COUNCIL A LONG SOUGHT GOAL
Re. Dissolution needed, Letter, May 26:
Several years ago our current esteemed and much loved premier asked that Niagara and other regions examine ways to improve current municipal set ups.
I broke down Niagara region by Federal/Municipal ridings making the region one city. I think this might be similar to the Hamilton model. I presented my plan at a meeting. My presentation was not well done.
This reduced the number of municipal positions from 126 to 27. Those remaining in office would
need to be full time. The real savings would probably be in staff reductions through retirements and those leaving their jobs. This would and take some time.
What happened? Nothing. Any suggestions were dropped, no explanations. It would have been nice to know the problem with my suggestion and others was. I can only think that the exercise was to appease Toronto.
Niagara municipal politicians breathed a collective sigh of relief.

AMERICA'S FLIRTING WITH ANOTHER CIVIL WAR
defined by at least four people dead — in five days.
Maybe the incident that sealed the fate of an impending race war in America will be the slow and ghastly murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis by a racist police officer; a video of the incident went around the world in a nine-minute video that's still hard to watch two years later.
Or will the senseless killing of nine African American shoppers and a security guard at the Tops Friendly Market in nearby Buffalo be the volley of shots that ends the uneasy truce between white and Black America?
spend the next 20 Christmases in a cell right next to their sons. Buffalo, a city I know and like a lot, did not deserve this. Buffalo, the place that tries so hard to live up to its nickname the "City Of Good Neighbours." The city that's boasted an honest, hardworking Black mayor for the past 16 years. The colourful town with exciting sports teams that seem destined to break your heart.
blood at their local grocery store? That's a stretch that would depress even the most eternal optimists, including the Bible's Job.
In a nation of 329 million people with 400 million guns, 917 known hate groups (and half of those white supremacists), 334 armed militias like the Proud Boys and the Oath Takers and 47 million mostly unarmed Blacks, I just don't see this orgy of mass shootings ending like a Woodstock festival with peace signs and blissed-out hippies making love in the mud.
Years from now when historians look back upon the next civil war in America, I wonder what they will select as the symbolic shot that started it?
Will it be the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut, in which a 20year-old killed 26 people, mostly six- and seven-year-olds?
It was after that bloody rampage that President Barack Obama, in tears, looked Americans in the eye and said, time to decide — your children or your guns? With the all-powerful National Rifle Association leading the way, Americans answered that question with approximately 200 mass shootings in the following 10 years. So far, there have been 198 mass shootings in the United States already this year. Two weeks ago, there were four mass shootings — the word "mass"
Yet another dumbass white kid who was armed like a SWAT team police officer, New York's Payton Gendron, 18, is just the latest murdering bag of hate impersonating a person.
Before him, there was 17year-old Kyle Rittenhouse in Wisconsin who took an AR-15 assault rifle to a protestturned-riot and, when he felt the need to defend himself, shot and killed two people and was later cleared of all charges.
After that came 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley, who killed four fellow students at a Michigan high school — aided and abetted by his parents, who bought him the handgun used in the shooting. Both Crumbley's and Gendron's parents bought the boys weapons for Christmas. In both cases, animal abuse was tolerated. White supremacist teenagers with narrow minds, unlimited firepower and parents who should
In the early '60s, realizing that they would have to fight like hell for the rights gifted to whites under the Constitution, Blacks were offered two clear but distinct paths for the impending battle. While Martin Luther King advocated peaceful resistance and turning the other cheek, Malcolm X, who urged his followers to take up arms, said, "If you turn the other cheek, you can be enslaved for 1,000 years." Wisely, Black Americans followed the inspirational works of MLK: "Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."
Now, with hatred surging through the streets of America and Blacks being targeted for assassination, as was the case of the Buffalo massacre, would anyone blame African Americans if they switched strategies? From King's Gandhi-like pacifism to Malcolm X's armed insurrection? From the love they may have felt during the eight years of Barack Obama to the four years of naked racism promoted by Donald Trump? From a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest to the aftermath of 10 bodies lying in puddles of
Suddenly we're descending into the dark ages of tribalism and most dominant by far, in both America and Canada, is Tribe Trump. Donald Trump did not invent hate, but he sure made racists feel good about themselves and recruited them for personal gain.
Five minutes by foot over a bridge named for peace, the recent savagery in Buffalo is perilously close to home. With the massacre at Montreal's École Polytechnique; the shootings at the mosque in Quebec City; the hostage taking of Ottawa and the cache of weapons found on the truckers at a Coutts, Alberta border crossing, as well as our very own 20year-old bigot who killed that beautiful Muslim family in London with his truck, don't for one second think that if racial hatred is not eradicated in Canada by tougher laws and longer jail sentences, that our country is not capable of following America down that rabbit hole of dark conspiracies and white superiority.

MAN'S BOOK FOCUSES ON MIND, BODY AND SOUL
path.
Now in his fifth self-published book, "Managing Wellness: Creating and Maintaining a Mind, Body and Soul Connection," Patrick chronicles his latest journey to better himself.
Patrick said, writing has become an outlet of self-expression for him and a way to build his self-confidence.
Darcy Patrick is no stranger to healing.
The 50-year-old St. Catharines-based author lives a sober life, regularly does yoga, runs and started therapy around eight years ago in order to save himself from heading down a dark
"The one thing that is really cool about this book is how I (talk about) exercising the mind, body and soul, and then seeing the flow of when we pay attention to one part of who we are, how it flows into the other part," he said. "So, whenever you give attention to the body, it flows into the mind and the soul ... the book is really about how we are three parts and not just one."
Over the last five years,
"Most of my life, I thought very little of myself," he said. "I never had good grades in school. I didn't think I was capable of doing such things. Writing became my way of expressing myself and my way of helping myself understand the therapy that I was going through for depression."
Unfortunately for Patrick, the launch of this book was derailed by a rare infection in his back that caused him to have to cancel events.
The day the book went
live, Feb. 28, was the day he checked himself into the hospital.
"It was kind of strange because of COVID and things. I hadn't had a book launch for the past two books, and so this one was
kind of ironic. The title being 'Creating and Maintaining a Mind, Body and Soul Connection.' When it came out, I was, you know, being admitted to the hospital for my body breaking."
For his next novel, Patrick said, his experiences relearning how to use his body will serve as a major influence.
All of Patrick's books are available at Indigo and on Amazon.

nity amenity concept, as it was designed with great thought and care. It is well-suited to its purpose."
Atria, a Toronto-based company, has a history of working with YMCAs.
The YMCA of Niagara has unveiled its new strategic plan, and it doesn't include the St. Catharines-based Walker Family YMCA.
The centre, located at 25 YMCA Dr., went up for sale in March 2021, with the YMCA of Niagara citing increasing financial pressure amid dwindling membership and rising maintenance costs.
It was purchased by Atria Development Corporation in January 2022, with the YMCA and Atria planning to utilize the space collaboratively.
However, the YMCA has announced its plan to leave the building at the end of May.
YMCA of Niagara CEO and president Steven Chuang said that in the end, the building was just too big for them.
"At the end of the day, it boils down to the fact that the property is 110,000 square feet. That's a very large building," he said. "We will vacate ... our operations May
31 and look at ways whereby we can reinvest in other parts of St. Catharines, in a different model, in a smaller footprint, in a way that's more engaging with the neighbours. So that is our strategy."
Instead, Chuang said, they will focus on smaller, satellite locations that will cater to specific neighbourhood needs.
Hans Jain, president of Atria, said they are looking for a new partner in order to keep the facil-
ity open.
"We remain hopeful that we can find a partner to help ensure the community continues to benefit from this great facility," he said. "It would seem the ideal place to locate a similar commu-
They recently completed two residential projects associated with YMCAs in Ontario, comprising 750 rental units: Y Lofts, an adaptive reuse of a heritage YMCA building in Peterborough, and a two-phase Bond Street project in Oshawa, where residents receive a membership to the adjacent Oshawa YMCA during their tenancy.
Chuang said the YMCA of Niagara is hoping to move past its pandemic struggles and looking to strengthen their communityfocused team, strive for financial stability within the next three to five years, renew stakeholder engagement and deepen their impact.
"What folks may not know is that the Y actually has a number of program areas," he said. "We're one of the largest child care providers in Niagara, with some 50 locations across the various municipalities. We also offer EarlyON, which is a free drop-in programs with multi-sites as well."
The YMCA of Niagara also offers employment and fitness services.

WAYS TO CELEBRATE PRIDE MONTH
the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre.
The tea will feature high tea foods and tea from the Vegan Hippie Chick, and the head table at this event will feature local LGBTQ2S+ activists, allies, personalities and political figures.
On Saturday, June 18, a Pride Market will take place at St. Catharines Market Square.
The beginning of June marks the return of Pride month in Niagara.
Due to the pandemic, this will be the first time in two years that many events will be able to be held in person.
The beginning of this week saw Niagara's municipalities raise the Pride flag in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community,
and last Saturday's event at the Meridian Centre launched Pride Month celebrations with Pride Niagara.
In partnership with the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre, Pride Niagara is hosting a one-time screening of "Paris is Burning" on Friday, June 3 at 6 p.m.
This documentary focuses on drag queens living in New York City and house culture. A panel discussion follows.
On June 4, Pride in the Park returns to Montebello Park in downtown St. Cath-
arines.
The annual event is a fan favourite, as it's free to attend and is open to all ages. This year's celebration features performances
from "RuPaul's Drag Race" stars Brooke Lynn Hytes and Mayhem Miller, as well as food and merchandise vendors and a fully licensed area with DJs and
dance floor.
Aside from Pride in the Park, Pride Niagara is also hosting a "Hieeee" Tea the following day at 3 p.m. at the Robertson Theatre at
The market, hosted by the Stay Strong Collective, will run from 4 to 10 p.m. and feature more than 20 vendors, food trucks, musical and drag performances.
Outside of St. Catharines, Fort Erie is bringing back its Pride Festival on June 25.

Sandra Easton is seeking re-election as mayor at the Lincoln municipal election on Oct. 24.
Mayor Easton has served two consecutive terms as mayor, and was previously a two-term Alderman for the town.
In an interview with Niagara This Week, she spoke about her political style and the projects she's proud of over her previous two terms and laid out her vision for the future.
"I feel that under my leadership there's a great deal of positive work that's taking place within this community," Easton said.
She emphasized her forward thinking, saying "you don't wait until things fall apart to fix them, you make aplan."
In terms of projects, Easton is keen to develop social infrastructure and maintain green spaces within the existing boundaries.
Over her terms as mayor, she's proud of Rotary Park in Beamsville, which officially opens on June 4 but is already accessible to the public. "There's something there for everyone," she said. "Who's having more fun? Seniors, the kids themselves, or the parents? It's always full."
The creation of the new Lincoln Museum and Cultural Centre was another highlight during her may-
oral tenure. Easton describes it as a "fabulous new museum" with "lots of accolades. A lot of that has to do with the quality of the staff."
She's also pleased with the new Speak Up Lincoln site, a community engagement forum where residents can comment on any new developments and infrastructure projects. Last year, the site had 21,000 visitors and more than 2,000 people filled out surveys.
Easton said she and the council are keen to play to the town's strengths, including its history and the tourism and beverage industry.
That means initiatives like the project to develop Jordan, which Easton describes as a "cultural centre." Plans are underway to create a pedestrian square and improve the streetscape of the village.
The town is also focused on supporting the tourism and beverage industry. There is a push to develop the identity of the area, and the town created a "Niagara Benchlands" brand in order to encourage tourism to the area and to "put us on the map", as Paul Di Ianni, director of economic development and communications described it.
"It's about being aware of where you are and who you are," said Easton. "I think that we are conscious of that."
Easton is also keen to protect as much of the heritage of the town as possible in the face of population growth.
There is a heritage study ongoing until next April and there is currently a moratorium on development on King Street in Beamsville. "It gives us time to make the correct decisions," said Easton.
Looking to the future, the focus is on "transformational projects," said Easton.
Big projects include the development of the Beamsville District Secondary School site. Council plans to move town hall there once the school moves to West Niagara Secondary School. There are plans to create a social and community hub and to look at the possibility of affordable housing.
There is also a push to protect farmland and protect the shoreline from erosion.
"There's a lot happening here," she said. "We're always looking for ways to make the community better."

COUN. CHERYL GANANN ANNOUNCES WEST LINCOLN MAYORAL BID
THE COUNCILLOR OF SIX YEARS PROMISES TO ENGAGE COMMUNITY WHEN TACKLING THE BIG ISSUES
cpickles@metroland.com
West Lincoln Councillor
Cheryl Ganann has thrown her hat into the ring and announced that she will be running for mayor at October's municipal election.
Ganann, who has lived in the area for 50 years and has always been "actively engaged in the community," filed her nomination papers on May 11.
She said this felt like the "next logical step after six years on council."
She is a retired elementary school teacher and has been on a number of committees and charity groups, including the ladies' auxiliary of the fire department, the Smithville Lions Club, the library board, the board of West Lincoln Community Care, the Canadian Blood Services and the Kiwanis Club.
At council, Ganann was the chair of the planning, building, environmental committee from 2018 to 2020, and was the vice-
chair of that committee from 2020 to present. Since 2018, she has been the council representative on the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Community Advisory Board.
Ganann sees growth and expansion as one of the biggest issues facing West Lincoln. She said she wants to ensure that there is community engagement and participation in the expansion process, and that "when we do build up, do it sensibly."
Improving the internet infrastructure across the township is also an issue that Ganann wants to support.
As mayor, Ganann would promote economic prosperity and industrial growth, build healthy and safe communities, advocate for police presence, promote a clean and green environment, support carefully built environments, and protect heritage.
She is also committed to culture, diversity and equi-
ty and welcoming people to the community.
"Those are my goals that, if I was elected as mayor, I would like to continue to support," she said.
"Additionally, I am com-
mitted to being respectful of both residents' time and concerns... I am committed to being fully prepared for all meetings so as to be able to make a well-researched, and therefore well-in-
formed, decision on any and all matters placed before council.
"That's my philosophy of life, it's the way I've dealt with every responsibility I've had.
"That's me in a nutshell."
Municipal elections take place on Oct. 24 and candidates have until Aug. 19 to submit their nomination papers.

The basics of container gardening
Gardening is a rewarding hobby that has been linked to health benefits like reduced stress and improved mental well-being. Gardening also can lead to an inviting home landscape full of attractive blooms and/or delicious foods.
Backyard gardens have long been planted after clearing a plot of land, tilling and amending the soil, and planting rows of favorite crops. However, gardening can be less labor-intensive and even more successful when people consider the many benefits of container gardening.
What is container gardening?
As its name implies, container gardening is growing plants inside of containers. These containers can be flower pots, rectangular deck boxes or even large raised garden beds.
Pros to container gardening
One of the advantages of container gardening is that plants can be moved in and out of sunlight to ensure the right growing conditions. This isn’t as easily achieved when gardens are stationary. Also, beginner gardeners may be more able to control soil conditions inside of a small container rather than a vast ground-based garden, which will require a good deal of manual labor. Pots and boxes also can be grouped together to create eyepopping displays, usually at lower costs than the sheer volume of plants that would be needed to fill out an expansive landscape.
Cons to container gardening
Container garden plants will not have direct access to the ground, so they need gardeners to create the ideal growing conditions. Developing the right care formula can be challenging. The home and garden resource The Spruce says that drainage is an important factor in container gardening, and most containers do not offer enough drainage holes. If water cannot escape the soil, the roots of the plants can rot and die. It’s not enough to add stones or gravel to the bottom of containers. Drill additional holes in the bottom (1⁄2-inch in diameter for small or medium-sized pots; one inch in diameter for larger pots). Also, be sure to check on soil moisture so that watering can be adjusted. During hot stretches, plants may need to be watered more frequently. Plan for plants that play well
Grouping plants together can create visually stunning combinations. However, it is important to choose plants that require the same amount of light and moisture. Look at plant tags when visiting the garden center and select complementary plants, or ask a store employee. Mixing different plant shapes, colors and leaf textures, as well as plants of various heights, can help containers look filled out.
Feed plants accordingly
Plants need nutrition to thrive in containers. Quality pot-
ting mixes will contain fertilizers, but nutrition will wane over time. Every couple of weeks, container plants will need either fresh potting mix or granular fertilizer added to feed them. Oregon State University Extension Services suggests using a slow-release fertilizer or worm castings several times throughout the season.
Container gardening is a great way to add plants to smaller patios, reduce the workload involved in maintaining expansive gardens, and customize conditions for optimal growth. (MC)

SLOW RIDE: LINCOLN APPROVES SPEED LIMIT REDUCTION PILOT
to council found methods other than speed limits are more effective in reducing speeds in neighbourhoods.
"Engineering and human factors research have shown, that on local residential streets, the primary determiner of the speed at which drivers elect to travel is governed by their comfort level driving on the respective street," the report reads.
Keep an eye on the speedometer when you're driving through a neighbourhood in Lincoln.
Councillors have approved a pilot project that would see speed limits reduced in residential areas to 40 km/h. The pilot will see speed limits reduced at targeted areas in each ward and should the trial prove successful, the town would look at expanding the new reduced limits.
Dave Graham, director of public works, said speed reductions is just one of the tools the town uses to reduce dangerous driving.
"It's one of many we have on the go that relates to traffic safety in general," he said.
In fact, the staff report
"Where speeding conditions have been confirmed based on collected evidenced based speed data, the best approach to reduce speed is through traffic calming strategies."
The report identifies measures such as speed humps, chicanes, road narrowing, digital speed signs and line painting or pavement markings as some useful options.
Regardless, a five-year study of vehicle speeds on 83 residential roads in Lincoln found the average speed to be 34 km/h and the 85th percentile speed to be 39 km/h. The latter means the speed at which 85 per cent of drivers or travelling at or below. It's important because industry standards recommend limits be
set at or within 10 km/h of the 85th percentile.
"Otherwise, if speed limit reductions are set outside of these industry standard guidelines, or artificially too low, it can be ex-
pected that most drivers will not comply, resulting in inconsistent operating speeds creating unsafe conditions, all requiring significant police enforcement," the report reads.
In a press release, Mayor Sandra Easton said the town has worked to develop an active transportation network that promotes a connected community.
"The consultation pro-
cess with our local partners was vital in collecting the essential data to develop a plan grounded in best practices and meets community needs and increases public safety."
Chief administrator Mike Kirkopoulos said community safety continues to be a priority with town staff.
"With the changing needs of the community, and more residents choosing active transportation, it is important that we stay current with our approach to road safety," he said.
Here are some important dates regarding the pilot:
May 30: Ratified by council.
July to August: Notification of the changes will be sent out to the public through public notices, social media and speakuplincoln.ca.
September to October: Gateway signage will be installed
Throughout 2023: Town will study speeds in the pilot project areas. Later in the year, the town will seek public feedback and report back to council toward the end of the year.

TOWN SIGNS CONTRACT FOR EXPANDED WINTER MAINTENANCE PROGRAM
MUNICIPALITY RESPONSIBLE FOR CLEARING ALL TOWN-OWNED SIDEWALKS, HARD-SURFACED WALKWAYS AND TRAILS
Winter may be the last thing on most people's minds these days, but in Canada, it's good to remember that the next snowfall is never that far away.
And with that in mind, the Town of Lincoln has awarded a five-year contract to B.A. Loney Services Inc. to help with the expanded winter maintenance program it approved last fall. The new program will see the town clear all municipally owned sidewalks, hard-surfaced walkways and trails.
"I'm excited for this program to get underway," said Coun. Paul MacPherson.
According to a staff report, previously the town's winter maintenance program only covered about 40 per cent of its sidewalk network. The hiring of B.A. Loney will provide support to

municipal staff to help with the additional workload.
Town staff will still be responsible for an area described as Beamsville North. B.A. Loney will be responsible for nearly 54 kilometres of sidewalks and trails in Beamsville South, Vineland, Campden and Jordan.
The five-year contract comes in at just over $425,000 a year. There's also aprovisional windrow clearing program the town and contractor will explore that would see residents pay $45 to have the company clear windrows.
Given it's a new program, some councillors had concerns about the length of the contract.
"It's a lengthy term of five years. What's driving
that, have we built in an out clause?" asked MacPherson.
Associate Director of Public Works Gillian Harris said the length gives the contractor some certainty to make investments in equipment, but also stressed that the terms of reference were exhaustive and there are several exit clauses and penalties for not meeting expectations.
"We understood it was a long term, so we did want to protect the town from that perspective," she said.
Harris said they're also taking a hybrid approach given how snowfall events can fluctuate from year to year. The Town and contractor will try to work together to lend support to each other as needed.

WEST LINCOLN KIDS CARE FOOD DRIVE A 'BIG SUCCESS'
MORE THAN
CHRIS PICKLES cpickles@metroland.com
Food bank volunteers in West Lincoln are thrilled with the amount of donations they received at a recent food drive which will be put to good use for the community.
This year, the annual Kids Care Food Drive on May 14 re-
sulted in 8,640 pounds of food being donated to the food bank at West Lincoln Community Care (WLCC).
Food bank manager Sharlene Volpatti said the food drive was a "big success" with a great turnout.
"To get this amount of food was really impressive and we're happy with the results," she said.
Drivers from Purolator got involved, donating their time to drive around the subdivisions to pick up the bags of food donations. The company also donated reusable red bags, which were filled with food by donors.
The food drive started thirteen years ago, thanks to Mela-
nie Felvus. Her daughter Micaela was inspired to start a food drive after a guest speaker gave a presentation to her Grade 3 class.
Micaela convinced her moth-
er to start a local food drive, which began on their block before expanding to their neighbourhood and now encompassing West Lincoln.
"It feels amazing," Felvus
said. "It's really come a long way. It's amazing to see the community embrace this.
"It feels like the entire community comes together for the cause."

West Lincoln's farmers market opened under sunny skies on Friday, May 27, the start of the first full market season in the township.
Last year, the market ran for 10 weeks while enticing food and farm-based vendors to form a farmers market that had been missing from the township for about nine years. Now that most of the COVID restrictions have been lifted, the market is thrilled to welcome the community to visit every Friday between 3 and 7 p.m.
The hope is to create the atmosphere
that markets offered prior to the pandemic, which led to the "get in, get out" shopping experience. This season, the market welcomes you to come and stay! The bandshell will feature local talent and the dining area invites you to grab a meal, sit and listen to music with family and friends. The community area of the market will display temporary vendors bringing a variety of crafts of interest. Ron Murza of Cedarbuilt furniture will join the West Lincoln Garden Club on June 3.
Almost half of this season's vendors will be new to our market. Fresh Market Kitchen is calling the West Lincoln market home for the season. Chef Casey prides herself in seeking local ingredients from which she creates freshly prepared food offered at the market. Janette Gordon, (Na Na's Orchard) is also a first-time market vendor and has chosen West Lincoln's market to try out her talents with a limited menu. Jerk chicken, jerk chicken roti and seasoned beef patties will be offered along with freshly made fruit smoothies. A real taste of the Islands right here in Niagara!
The Pump House Gardens hails from Beamsville and this is also a first attempt as farm market vendor. This family is no stranger to flowers. Colin and Esther Van Geest and sister Rachel Samuels started
gianttiger.com
their flower garden in Beamsville last fall, and their beautiful, colourful seasonal flowers are being offered in bouquets. When asked why they decided to grow flowers, Colin was quick to point out that flowers are "in their blood."
Growing flowers has been the family business for over 60 years. Does the name sound familiar? It should, since the Van Geest family lives in Grimsby and have a flower business right in the heart of the town.
Valerie and Matt Potvin are also new to the West Lincoln market. Together they create unique charcuterie boards. Matt explained that they started by making tabletops. They acquired a sawmill and kiln on site in Cayuga and after a while found a niche market for the small pieces of wood that were left over. These pieces are held together with epoxy and etched with some frack burning, with the result being a beautiful handcrafted piece.
The West Lincoln Farmers' Market will run every Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the West Lincoln Arena and Community Centre off West Street.
Michelle Seaborn is the manager of the West Lincoln Farmers’ Market. She can be reached at farmersmarket@westlincoln.ca.

IN THE SOIL RETURNS WITH 'HEREAFTER'
3-DAY FESTIVAL WILL SHOWCASE MUSIC, THEATRE, VISUAL ARTS
MELINDA CHEEVERS mcheevers@niagarathis week.com
St. Catharines' popular downtown arts festival is returning to the core for three days in June.
From sonic duets to a cyclical drag performance and immersive virtual reality installations to a human vending machine, there will be lots to see and experience at the In the Soil Arts Festival.
Set to take place June 10 to 12, this year the festival
weekend serves as a launch to a summer-long celebration of multi-arts events.
Prior to the pandemic, the festival — known as an explosion of creativity — had grown quite large. Artistic director Deanna Jones said they had started to pull it back a bit, narrowing it down, and then the pandemic hit.
"We had to do everything differently," she said.
As the festival moves forward, everything will be a little more condensed
Jones said. With so many unknowns, even still, she said the key was to plan so the festival could happen, no matter what was coming.
"We're planning this months out, and so you never know what might come up," she said.
This year's festival has a theme: hereafter.
"We put a call out around that theme and it's been so interesting to see how artists are responding to it and where people are taking it," said Jones.
This marks the second time the festival, now in its 14th year, has done a theme.
In addition to live music
performances from artists like the Great Lake Swimmers, Witch Prophet, Radio Radio, and Miniscule,
there will also be a number of art installations, like Alex Cerkade and Andrew Finlay Stewart's patch-

Interactive experiences, like this one from the 2019 festival, will be on tap when In the Soil Arts Festival returns to downtown St. Catharines June 10-12.

tre's plate glass gallery, Cree Tyler's photographic installation Unending Pathway and Joseph Gottli's Welcome to (Hidden) St. Catharines signs in the Festival Hub.
On Saturday, Hercinia Arts Collective will be offering up a modern interpretation of a peep-show as a site-specific public art installation. A giant box will be transformed into a stage for performances throughout the day and evening.
James Street will once again host a Vendor Bender market featuring local artisans. On Friday night, Black Owned 905 will be curating the Kickback Vendor Bender.
There will be family fun programming presented by OLG, including a dance party and a massive band parade Saturday.
Throughout the weekend, there will be installations and performances at multiple venues through-
out downtown, including Mahtay Café's community room, the TCO Rooftop Terrace at the Niagara Artists Centre, Oddfellows Temple, Silver Spire United Church, Courthouse Courtyard, 71 Queen St., and the festival hub stage on James Street.
Downtown businesses are coming on board and welcoming the return of the weekend-long event, according to Tamara Jensen, director of marketing and development with Suitcase in Point and an In the Soil Festival organizer. Many will have festival features gracing their menus, she said, adding 25 different businesses are participating in some way.
"We're trying to get people to do more and experience more of downtown," Jensen said.
To help expand the circle of who gets to experience the festival, organizers have introduced a community engagement program where they're
offering some complimentary passes to organizations like Niagara Region Native Centre, Start Me Up Niagara, OPIRG Brock, Pride Niagara, and Folk Arts Festival.
"We wanted to get more of our community involved," said Jensen.
Jones added it feels very in line with the goal of the festival originally: to build connections with everyone and celebrate all.
Tickets for the weekend are on sale now, with weekend passes priced at $60. There is a tier for arts workers and students at $40. Super supporters can pay $80 and get a $20 charitable donation receipt.
Day passes are also available; $25 for Friday or Sunday and $35 on Saturday.
Individual tickets will be available at the door for limited capacity events for $15.
For passes or more information, visit inthesoil.on.ca.

D.O.A. BRINGING 40 YEARS OF POLITICAL PUNK TO ST. CATHARINES
HARDCORE
NEED TO KNOW
What: DOA Hardcore '81 40th Anniversary Tour
Where: The Warehouse, 11 Geneva St., St. Catharines
When: June 23, 8 p.m. Tickets: $20, available online at www.showclix.com
DOA online: www.facebook.com/DOAPUNK
As if being the driving force of a legendary Canadian punk band and running a record label are hard enough, Joe Keithley thought adding politician to his portfolio would be no problem.
"Before I got elected, I thought it was just a parttime job, and, boy, was I fooling myself, right?"
Keithley was elected to Burnaby city council back in 2018 and — spoiler alert — he is seeking re-election this fall. But before the campaign starts, he has other work to attend to, namely taking D.O.A., the band Keithley has fronted since 1978, back on the road to mark four decades since the release of the band's eponymous second album, "Hardcore '81." The tour — delayed a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic — brings the band to St. Catharines on June 23 for a show at the Warehouse. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased online at www.showclix.com.
For Keithley, taking on duties as a councillor in ad-
dition to keeping active with D.O.A. was a challenge he wanted to take on, even if he was a little bit naïve when it comes to the time commitment.
"I have a pretty dramatic work ethic, you know. I rarely sit around idle," Keithley said. "I thought I'd just get a job and watch the (Vancouver) Canucks play in the playoffs. But the Canucks never make it."
The anniversary tour began last month with the
band hitting the west coast of the U.S. with shows in Washington State, Oregon, California and Nevada — places Keithley considers the group's "stomping grounds" before returning to Canada for stops in Regina and Winnipeg.
"They were great. There's really like a lot of fun, and a lot of people came out and were excited."
"Hardcore '81" was the follow up to the band's de-
but "Something Better Change." While many of the songs on the album had been written at the time of the first album, a conscious decision was made to pick up the pace, leaving behind the more melodic sound of the debut for a faster, sharper-edged brand of music.
"When we got the idea of doing 'Hardcore,' we thought we should be faster so most of those songs were already written, but
they got left off the first album. But they became a really good group of songs for the second album."
It has been fun for Keithley, who is the only constant in the D.O.A. lineup, which currently includes drummer Paddy Duddy and bassist Mike Hodsall, to look back on the album.
"I really like (the song) D.O.A. that opens the album. We've been playing it for years and years and years. "My Old Man's a
Bum" is pretty fun to play. Our old guitar player Brian, his dad was an alcoholic and he wrote the song about his dad. Then we've got the stuff like "Waiting for You," which we've been playing pretty well every night for 40 years. We've been playing "Smash the State," which is a classic folksong if you ask me."
The Hardcore tunes will be sprinkled in among 12 other songs pulled from the band's 18-album catalogue right up to 2019's "Treason," which Keithley said the band is "trying to jam in" to the two-hour show.
Keithley is also working on a solo album of acoustic songs that will differ from his work with D.O.A.
"It will have a really, really different tone, but would still be like pretty strident lyrics."
He is also looking ahead to the next D.O.A. record, but will be busy with the current tour and then a campaign for re-election in the fall.
"So, you know, that 's kind of what's got to take priority."

STUDY HIGHLIGHTS BENEFITS OF VIRTUAL CANINE VISITS
ous reasons," said TardifWilliams.
While many of us are experiencing Zoom fatigue, it seems that having some screen time with a dog can have similar benefits to having one in your lap.
Brock University and the University of British Columbia (UBC) Okanagan completed a study determining if virtual animal visits are as beneficial to students as in-person animal visits.
The results show that while in-person animal visits can boost our well-being, so can virtual animal visits.
"We know from a number of studies now that animal- or canine-assisted interventions work really well in alleviating student stress, reducing homesickness and loneliness and increasing positive affect and social connectedness on campus for undergraduate students," said Tardif-Williams, associate professor at Brock University's Department of Child and Youth Studies.
For the past decade, Tardif-Williams has taught a course on companion animals in the lives of children and youth. She's also researched the relationships between animals and younger people.
Tardif-Williams worked with John-Tyler Binfet, an Associate Professor from UBC Okanagan. He's also the director of UBC Okanagan's Building Academic Retention through K9s
program (B.A.R.K).
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the two professors started to talk about ways to support student wellness while studying online. They were then awarded a grant titled "Undergraduate student stress reduction through virtual canine comfort." With the help of this grant, they

The research can be found in a new paper, "Virtual Canine Comfort: A Randomized Controlled Trial of the Effects of a Canine-Assisted Intervention Supporting Undergraduate Wellbeing." It was also
in Anthrozoös, a bi-monthly publication.
The paper talks about the study and the 460 students who participated. The students attended virtual sessions with a dog trainer that were either live and synchronous or recorded and asynchronous.
The sessions lasted roughly five to seven minutes. During the sessions, the trainer asked the participants about their life. The questions were from a set script. Once the sessions wrapped up, the researchers examined the session. They looked at measures like stress, loneliness and well-being. They also looked at the positive and negative effects.
"I think in some ways this is really attractive for young people, from remote or distance learners to those who do not seek mental health services for vari-
Brock University offers full mental health services, and the virtual animal visits are meant to be used as a first step toward those services, not a substitute.
"Now we have really finely tuned the asynchronous videos, with the help of a videographer and other people on the research team, and we've produced a series of six videos," says Tardif-Williams. "Almost 250 participants across 41 different countries have now watched these clips." The videos are low-cost, and students can access them whenever they need them.
The research is ongoing, and whoever is interested in participating in the next phase is encouraged to reach out to @barkubs on Instagram.

OBITUARIES | REMEMBERING THE LIVES OF THOSE IN OUR COMMUNITY
Your memory is as dear today, as in the hour you passed away.
A sweet little flower, nipped in the bud, no grief or sorrow knew; just came to earth to win our love and then to Heaven withdrew. No stain was on your little heart, sin had not entered there; and innocence slept sweetly on that pale white brow so fair. You were too pure for this cold earth, too beautiful to stay, and so God’s holy angel bore our darling one away.
We are sad within our memory, lonely are our hearts today; for the one we loved so dearly has forever been called away.

BACK AFTER A LONG WINTER: GRIMSBY FARMERS' MARKET RETURNS
VENDORS HOPEFUL FOR A BUSY YEAR
LUKE EDWARDS
ledwards@niagara thisweek.com
Still early in the season, the huge bounties of fruit and vegetables weren't present. But otherwise, it felt like the middle of summer at the season debut of the Grimsby Farmers' Market.
With the weather warm and sunny, music from Josh Coulter — one of six musicians who will be performing at the market this season — wafting through the air, vendors ready to offer up an easy supper for the family, Thursday, May 26 was a much needed dose of springtime optimism and normalcy.
"It's been a long winter," said market manager Michelle Seaborn. "It's good to be actually out and going."
It wasn't quite a full complement of vendors at the debut. With great weather many were out in the fields on Thursday.
However, there was still
plenty for visitors to enjoy, from music and children's activities, to a free tree giveaway — courtesy the Grimsby Green Advisory Committee — to early season micro greens and produce.
Rita Pintea, one of the vendors, isn't sure what to expect this year but said she's hopeful the markets she attends will be busy.
"We'll see how it goes," she said.
Pintea started growing produce a few years ago and began attending markets last year. She'll be selling a wide range of fruit, and vegetables throughout the spring and into the summer.
For Andrew Karanfilis, of Flat Rock Cellars, getting back out to the market was a nice feeling of normalcy.
"It's awesome. It's nice to be out again," he said, calling the chance to go to the market a privilege.
Seaborn expects the market to have its full complement of 36 vendors as soon as the second week. The market is back at the
Peach King Centre parking lot this year, but Seaborn's excited to introduce some
of the activities and events of the past, such as the Teddy Bear Picnic.
Left to right from the top: Rita Pintea and her son Ryan were selling microgreens from their Beamsville farm. This is her second year at the Grimsby market and Rita said they'l be selling a wide variety of produce as it comes into season; Grimsby musician Josh Coulter performed; Don't worry, Andrew Karanfilis of Flat Rock Cellars isn't about to drop this delicious bottle of wine, but is instead using his magical powers to make it levitate; Sage Newton-Whitaker, 5, found a perfect spot for her new balloon animal: her mom's head. The Grimsby family was eager to return to the first market of the year; Ryan Day, Erin Holko and Zoe Wilson were handing out free trees to visitors through a town project with the Grimsby Green Advisory Committee.
She's also hoping to organize a children's pet show later this year.
The market runs every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

MOTHER OF MISSING MAN PLEADS FOR INFORMATION
NICHOLAS ADAMSON DISAPPEARED IN THE EARLY HOURS OF MARCH 17
ABBY GREEN agreen@metroland.com
The family of a St. Catharines man who has been missing since March has been left distraught as they continue searching for answers.
Nicholas Adamson has not been seen since the early hours of March 17.
The last known whereabouts of the 29-year-old was a popular Thorold bar and nightclub known as The Moose and Goose on Paul De Divitiis Senior Way. He had gone out for drinks with friends.
After stepping outside to make aphone call around 1:15 a.m., he wasn't let back into the establishment because it was past last call.
More than two months later, his family is still looking for answers and now his mom, Jennifer, is appealing to the public for help.
According to Jennifer, she knew her son was going out that night but she didn't know for sure where he was heading.
He ended up calling her twice throughout the night, asking for money so he could buy drinks and she obliged.
Jennifer said that money was never touched.
"The friends (he was with) didn't know he was outside," she said. "They thought he was out on the dance floor or something."
Having left his car and his phone at his friend's house, he called her from someone else's phone and asked her to come get him from "downtown."
As the family lives just off Facer Street in St. Catharines, Jennifer assumed he meant downtown St. Catharines.
Jennifer said she had consistent contact with her son from this other phone until about 1:55 a.m., when it died mid-conversation.
"He phoned me several times, and it always sounded like he was walking," she said.
Unable to find him, she went home, assuming he'd make his own way home.
"Twenty-five minutes driving all over the place, I went home," she said. "I thought he'd come home because he wasn't too far."
When he still wasn't home on the 18th, one of his brothers contacted the Niagara Regional Police Service.
After the Moose and Goose, Jennifer said they know nothing of his whereabouts.
"(Police) only have a picture of him in front of the Moose and Goose, and one of him walking away," she said adding that she spoke with businesses in the area and none of them picked him up on their security cameras. "They don't have any images of him anywhere. So, where did he disappear to? It's like he vanished."
In a March 21 media release, police requested members of the public within the south end of St. Catharines (Merritton) and Thorold check their properties, out buildings, and sheds for any sign that Nicholas may have been in the area.
Police also requested anyone in the area with closed-circuit security cameras, doorbell video cameras, or dash cameras review their footage for the early morning hours of March 17.
The police reissued the release seeking information on May 11.
Jennifer describes her son as a "home body," who likes video games and movies.
"He's a kind person," she said explaining that he is the eldest of three brothers, the other two are 28 and 23.
She hopes anyone with any information on her son's whereabouts will come forward to police.
Nicholas is described as a white male, standing at 5'10'' tall, and weighing about 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a white shirt with a collar.
Anyone who may have information as to his whereabouts are being asked to contact the NRPS Communications Unit at 905-6884111.

WEST LINCOLN MARKS YEAR OF THE GARDEN WITH GREEN EVENTS
THE GARDENING EVENTS RUN FROM MAY THROUGH TO OCTOBER
CHRIS PICKLES
cpickles@metroland.com
Calling all gardeners: West Lincoln is celebrating the Year of the Garden with a bumper crop of green-fingered events throughout the year.
The first event, "Discover or reacquaint yourself with the symbols and importance of West Lincoln's Indigenous Healing Garden", was held on May 28, and the township is planning eight more events celebrating gardens, ending in October.
Township council proclaimed 2022 the Year of the Garden at its regular meeting on April 25.
"This great new event series provides the perfect opportunity to get residents involved in West Lincoln's blossoming garden culture," said Mayor Dave Bylsma. "On behalf of council, we look forward to showcasing the wonderful clubs, programs and pollinator gardens our township has to offer."
Plans include a mix of virtual and in-person events. Here's a rundown of what's planned. (Note that many of the event times have not yet been confirmed.)
June 16: "Fruits and Vegetables" (an online presentation by Ontariogreen
Conservation Association), Hank MacDonald Park on Mill Street, Smithville.
June 16: In-person grand opening celebration of the community garden expansion, Hank MacDonald Park on Mill Street, Smithville.
July 14: "Designing for Biodiversity: Turning Yards and Gardens into Habitats" (an online presentation by Ontariogreen Conservation Association).
July 21: Centennial Garden — Smithville Garden Club special event.
Aug. 11: "Plants for Pollinators: Supporting Bees, Butterflies and Birds" (an online presentation by Ontariogreen Conservation Association).
PRIDE FLAG PROUDLY FLIES OVER SMITHVILLE
COUN. CHERYL GANANN AND PRIDE NIAGARA CHAIR
ENZO DE DIVITIIS RAISE FLAG AT A CEREMONY
CHRIS PICKLES
cpickles@metroland.com
The Progress Pride flag is now flying over Smithville after a ceremony on May 30.
West Lincoln Coun.
Cheryl Ganann and Enzo De Divitiis, chair of Pride Niagara, raised the flag over West Lincoln Arena and Community Centre to mark the start of Pride Month.
The ceremony was attended by staff from the township and members of the public.
Ganann delivered a speech about the impor-
tance of diversity and of the flag-raising ceremony.
She said that she wants "West Lincoln to be viewed by others as the warm, caring and generous community that we know it to be.
"The raising of this flag today in our changing and growing community demonstrates that we are a community in which, together, we proudly strive to
achieve diversity, equity, including and respect for all."
The community centre was chosen to be the appropriate site for the flag since, as De Divitiis pointed out, it is the "centre of the community." A purpose-built community flagpole was erected at the site last year.
The flag will fly for one week.
September: "Seed Saving" at the Seed Library, Wellandport branch of the West Lincoln Public Library (date to be confirmed closer to the time).
Oct. 6: "Native Trees and Shrubs: Add Life and Colour to Your Yard" (an online presentation by Ontariogreen Conservation Association).
Oct. 7: Tree sale at the West Lincoln Farmers' Market (tentative).
More details can be found on the township's website.

BOYZ II MEN SET TO ROCK THE HOUSE AT WHITE OAKS
ZAHRAA HMOOD zhmood@metroland.com
They've been rocking the world for over three decades with their R&B hits and emotional ballads: now, the American trio known as Boyz II Men are making a stop in Niagaraon-the-Lake this June for a concert, supporting a charitable cause.
One of the biggest vocal group acts of the '90s, Boyz II Men will hit the stage at the White Oaks Conference Resort and Spa from 8 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 4.
They're known for their hits "I'll Make Love to You," "On Bended Knee," "One Sweet Day" with Mariah Carey, and more, and have put out 12 full-length albums since 1991. They've
won four Grammy Awards throughout their career and were nominated for 10 others.
A portion of proceeds from the ticket sales will go to the Hotel Dieu Shaver Foundation, which supports the Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital in St. Catharines with providing rehabilitation and complex care for patients in Niagara.
A portion of the proceeds will be used to cover the event costs.
Maria Mavridis, owner of Corks Wine Bar & Eatery, led the effort to organize the concert, working with Anchor Niagara. For her, this has been an event two decades in the making.
As a Boyz II Men fan since she was a teenager in the 1990s, she's been trying
to bring them to Niagara for years.
"The things they've done to make a difference in the world and in people's lives hits me," she said.
"This is bringing two amazing things together."
She has an especially deep connection to their 1997 track, "A Song for Mama," an emotional ballad that, for Mavridis, has been with her since her mother died from cancer.
"I heard it for the first time, and I was crying," she said. "That song hit me really hard."
There were some delays with hosting the concert, which was originally scheduled to happen in February — however, when COVID-19 cases began to spike again in late
LIMITED-TIMEOFFER!

2021, and with the Ontario government reinstating social gathering restrictions in January, the concert had to be postponed.
"I was devastated," she said. "I took it as far out as I could to June."
Now, however, she said
she's glad they moved it, as a February show wouldn't have been as successful.
"I think it's kind of a blessing," she said.
Tickets are on sale now, starting at $107 for back-ofthe-venue tickets, with four different tiers of tick-
ets available, plus a VIP experience package that includes front-row seats, a private cocktail and meet and greet with the group before the show and more. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit Eventbrite.
