Is it here already? Surely not? Hell, yeah – September is well and truly upon us. That said, with weather one of the only agreeable things this year, we’re holding onto summer till at least October. We hope you’ll do the same by following our tips on how to extend the cottage experience, and how to enjoy safe gatherings from Labour Day to Thanksgiving and onwards towards Halloween. On our watch, the party never ends at the cottage. This year’s Hike Haliburton festival is an unfortunate victim to Covid-19, but don’t let that stop you getting out on the trails. Follow our gorgeous map which shows some of the best trails the county has to offer. Come on: now you’ve no excuses for getting lost. Looking at cottage renovation – and mindful the kitchen is undoubtedly the heart of the home – we share how to update your cooking space, regardless of budget. Yup, from planning ideas to DIY, we’ve got you covered! Working from home has fast become the new normal for many Canadians, but how can you ensure your home is up to the task, especially as you may need to host conference calls while running your day-to-day empire? Fear not: we’re here to salve executive stress by showing how to work from home, with ease.
Welcome HOME
Finally, we hope you enjoy our round-up of artistic talent in the Highlands. It shows there’s no shortage of unique and original pieces, all of which could easily be a talking point in any home or cottage. As the Haliburton Highlands Chamber of Commerce recommend: #buycloseby. In doing so, collect individual things for your home while supporting local makers into the bargain. Simple, really. Wow – talk about a warm welcome. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’re off to enjoy the sunshine… Till next time,
Colin and Justin

Designing a wonderful kitchen is like cooking something delicious – follow a proper recipe, say Colin and Justin, and you can’t go wrong.
Cooking at the cottage is wonderfully relaxing: casual in its very nature and, more often than not, a potluck ‘all hands on deck’ affair that brings people together. In our experience, it’s all about good food and good times. But if you have dated kitchen cabinets – and jumbo appliances cluttering the scene – you may feel that a lack of function is getting in the way of all the fun. Kitchens are worth investing in – period! Money spent making your cook zone personal, beautiful and functional is money well spent, as you’ll reap rewards on a daily basis while enhancing your property’s value. Yup, kitchens (and bathrooms) are the rooms which are sold fully furnished, so they have to be top notch if you want to achieve top dollar.
Kitchen floorplan
Carefully measure and note the position of existing services, windows and doors. Establish where you hope to position appliances, countertops and cupboards. Mark up any changes to services that may be required (electricity, water, drains, etc) and remember that keeping water and electrics in the same place costs less than completely rejigging the layout.
Form and function It’s all very well creating the kitchen of your dreams, but unless there’s adequate space to stash food, crockery, choppers and other paraphernalia, your plans will stumble. For maximum efficiency, remember your work triangle: a clear and easy relationship between sink, fridge and stove. Bear in mind the logic of ‘time-in-motion’ and your kitchen will function effectively.
Space out appliances
Avoid grouping appliances side by side or your kitchen will end up resembling an electrical showroom: it’s better to arrange stoves, fridges and freezers with cabinetry between. Alternatively, opt for integrated appliances to create a more streamlined and furnished look.
Open plan
The cottage, perhaps more than any other home, requires an open-concept kitchen where cooking, dining and living flow effortlessly into each other. So if your kitchen is small and separate, investigate ways to remove walls (safety and consents permitting) and join it with neighbouring rooms. Specifying the same flooring (hardwood, engineered or tile) in all spaces will encourage everything to feel much more cohesive.
HOME IN THE HIGHLANDS
Choose a style that’s appropriate
/9
Painting existing kitchen doors
If you live in a log cabin, a black and white glossy kitchen might feel a little at odds with its surroundings, so explore styles that are right for your home and for the overall feel you want to create. Visit sites like Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration. Tricks like hanging industrial pendent lighting or adding timber surfaces to a glossy kitchen can give you a modern look that’s still cottage friendly.
Preparation is everything – the way to achieve a pro’ finish is to take your time and build paint layer by layer. Sand doors, then clean properly with Krud Kutter to create a key so paint can adhere. Remember that several light coats will be much harder wearing that one thick application. For a simple guide, search for ‘How to Paint Cabinets - Benjamin Moore Advance Paint’ on Youtube. It’s all there!
To keep costs down, work with existing cupboards to get a new look for less. Retaining cabinets but swapping old doors for new works if the carcasses are clean and sound. We recently worked with Chaulk Designs in Minden and made over a kitchen by extending existing cabinetry to full height and adding new doors. Changing countertops also make a huge difference, as does switching up hardware. Yup, a change of knob or pull will revive even the dullest cabinetry – it’s like jewellery for doors.
Task lighting is the most important element in a kitchen – you have to be able to see your cooktop and countertop. Under-cabinet lighting works well, as does installing a dropped pendant or two over an island or peninsula unit. Follow up with dimmable overhead lighting to ‘flood’ space when needed. If you have more than one light source, experiment with each to create different moods in the kitchen.
Make more of what you’ve got
Lighting
We always say that many hands make light work. Just like a communal dinner party – where someone brings dessert and someone brings a starter – get your friends and family onboard to help remodel your kitchen. You can always repay them with baked goodies made in your lovely new space. We hear the ‘butter tarts for hard work’ exchange rate is rather sweet…
Left: Before. Right: This kitchen was built by Bateman in Oro, and features Caesarstone counters and nickel lighting. The cabinetry was painted in Whale Grey by Benjamin Moore.

Take a dip There’s a paddle for every painting. That’s how artist Jacqueline Morin selects canoe paddle seconds from Haliburton Forest, giving them another chance to shine as the canvas for locally-themed paintings. The sky in Algonquin Provincial Park is paired with a long handle to create extra depth of field; paintings of a moose or wolf – so close-up they look like they’re coming right at you – are perhaps matched with a shorter paddle. Sealing, sketching, painting and varnishing – find out more about the process and purchase or commission your own paddle at jkmorindesigns.com.
Barn burner If you’re looking for furniture that says “Haliburton County” – then maybe this is it. Terry Craig and Jennifer Wanless-Craig at glass blowers Artech were inspired by our forests and winter snow to create their Fire+Ice tables, where clear glass is paired with dark, burned wood. The furniture is made when molten glass is poured onto locally sourced reclaimed barn timber, creating a texture on the underside of the cast glass. The glass is then highly polished, the wood is burned to create a blackened finish and then it’s sealed. See more at artechstudios.ca.
Maple and marble Wood and stone – there’s plenty of that in the Highlands. So, isn’t it glorious to see these materials transformed into a beautiful piece of furniture? Cirvan Hamilton (the furniture maker) and Elise Muller (the sculptor) have a studio not far from Dorset and this credenza is the first work they’ve made together. A piece of Nero Portoro black marble – part polished, part rough – sits atop a maple cabinet, with birdseye maple panels and inlays of ebony and holly. It’s hard to resist touching the smooth wood and rough stone. See more at stonetreestudio.ca.
See your lake? Haliburton artist Sophie Creelman was experimenting with alcohol inks one day when she noticed before her appearing what looked like Kashagawigamog Lake. And so was born her unique series of epoxy resin-coated art. You can commission Sophie to create one of your own lake. It might look like abstract art to your guests, but you’ll see the familiar outline of your lake right there – complete with inky water currents such as this one of Drag Lake. It’s like the Highlands’ own Rorschach test. Find out more at sophiecreelman.com.

HOME IN THE HIGHLANDS
Snowdon Park The lookout over the wetland is fast becoming a classic Highlands view. Visit here and you'll see why: the soggy land is framed perfectly by classic mixed woodland. The park has trails for everyone. On one loop you might discover a 1973 Lincoln car. Go figure! Length: Longest trail about 3km. Hard on the knees? No, mostly easy trails, with a few moderate stretches.
Minden Riverwalk and Boardwalk Why not go hiking with an ice cream? Stroll the riverbank in downtown Minden and marvel at the variety of wildlife on this little strip of land. Cross the bridge and try the boardwalk, which keeps your feet dry on a magical ramble through to the Minden Cultural Centre. Length: About 1km. Hard on the knees? No, it's as flat as flat.
gh Falls
e WILBERFORCE
er Trail
Dahl Forest Say thanks to the Dahl family as you wander these wide and easy trails. The Dahls transformed abandoned farmland into a wildlife oasis, planting 100,000 trees along the way. Now this forest is cared for by the Haliburton Highlands Land Trust, which has set up some glorious (and well signed) trails. Length: A trail for every type of hiker. Hard on the knees? No, mostly easy-tomoderate, wide trails.
Minden Wild Water Preserve Part splashing of water, part smell of pine. Come on the right day and you'll see some of Canada's best kayakers battle the rapids. Then wander a little amid the red earth, kept dry by the soaring trees. Length: Half a kilometre. Hard on the knees? No, but watch for tree roots.
/17
Sucker Lake Walking Trail Sucker Lake has seen its fair share of destruction, thanks to beaver dams failing upstream and causing washouts. This short trail through the woods will take you close to the results: fallen trees and bare rocks. Arrive at the lake and you'll get the quintessential Haliburton County, shared only with frogs as they plop back into the water. Length: 750m each way. Hard on the knees? There's a few ups and downs as you get close to the lake.
Homesteader Trail Loop You'll trek into Haliburton County history and see what the pioneering farmers left behind. The rocky soil wasn't easy to manage - look closely and you'll see overgrown fields and old stone fences on this varied trail, which includes stretches of old railway track-bed and side roads. Length: There's 25km of trails in total, but you can do bits of it. Hard on the knees? A lot of it is flat, with a few more challenging spots.
Farr Road Walking Trail Look carefully, and you'll see a few patches of asphalt that give away this trail's secret: it was once the route to Wilberforce. Now this short and easy walk ends up in a wetland. But what a beautiful patch of classic Highlands this is! Stop awhile and be glad you're listening to the sound of silence - not the pick-ups on Loop Road. Length: 600m each way. Hard on the knees? Mostly flat. Continued on page 18
This year’s Hike Haliburton festival is an unfortunate victim to COVID-19. But don’t let that stop you getting out on the trails! Here are some of the best.

/HOME IN THE HIGHLANDS Sir Sam’s Historical Interpretive Hiking Trail You're rewarded with views over Eagle and Moose Lakes once you climb through the forests to the top of Sir Sam's ski hill. There's information about this history of the area along the loop - take a break while you recover your breath. Length: 4km. Hard on the knees? It goes up - and then it comes down...
Frost Centre Hiking Trails There's a hike for everyone here, thanks to the stacked loops that make up the 11km of trails, by the lake and through the forest. There's plenty for the family geologist too, with the fascinating 3.5km Geomorphology Hike. Length: Pick a trail to suit. Hard on the knees? Some trails are easy, some more challenging.
Ridge Trail Network You might hear the water thundering down the log chute as you hike these trails. And while the logs went down, you'll be going up on this network of hikes that give some terrific views over the Highlands. Combined, these 23km of trails show the best of Haliburton County's scenery. Length: From under a kilometre to 8km. Hard on the knees? Some of the climbs are challenging, but there are easier options too.
Haliburton Highlands Rail Trail It's mostly easy walking on the flat rail trail, but you'll need stamina if you want to do the full 35km from Haliburton to Kinmount. There's many places to get on and off, however, and on the way you'll see the jewels of the Highlands' nature and heritage. Length: 35km if you do the whole thing. Hard on the knees? It's mostly flat, so no problem there.
Sculpture Forest and Glebe Park The Sculpture Forest is fun, with a treasure around each corner on this easy walk close to Haliburton village. Great for kids, who'll thrill at finding the next work of art. Close by is Glebe Park, which has trails stretching over 175 acres of woods and hills. Perfect for a morning stroll before heading into the village for lunch. Length: As long as you want to make it. Hard on the knees? Mostly fine - and you can avoid any trickier parts.
Haliburton Forest Hiking Trails You could spend a week hiking the 400km of trails at Haliburton Forest, so it's a good thing there's accommodation on site. Having trouble planning? You can get an interactive map to download onto your phone. You'll need it to keep track of the 100,000 acres, 100 lakes and millions of trees. Length: There's 400km of trails, but you don't have to do them all before lunch. Hard on the knees? Pretty easy with some moderate parts.
High Falls Hiking Trail You’ll get some of the best views in the Highlands if you hike towards High Falls. The trail ends up at the rapids north of the falls, giving you a great view downstream towards them. When people are asked for their favourite trail, this is often it. You’ll need an Algonquin Park pass to hike the trail – you can pick one up at the Pine Grove Point Lodge. Length: 2km each way. Hard on the knees? It starts easy but gets rocky later on, so take care.

Cottage industry With more of us than ever before toiling from home, creating good domestic workspaces has become super-important. To bring out your inner executive and to amplify productivity, fast track through Colin and Justin’s Home Office 101 and transform your tired space into a ‘bureau de change.’
Shine a light
Protect your electronics
Invest in a smart desk lamp to provide task lighting, and ensure your home office has enough over-head (and side) lighting to make it a comfy place to work. Fitting a dimmer switch is an easy – and low-cost – way to make illumination controllable, as are dimmable cable extensions (for lamps).
With power outages and lighting strikes common in cottage country, it’s worth investing in a surge protector that plugs into a wall outlet, then into your PC. When a power spike hits, the surge protector absorbs the hit, saving your PC from corrupt data, unexpected power drainage, or even fried circuitry. We lost a TV to a lightning strike a few years past, but had we been using a surge protector, everything would have been okay!
Make executive decisions Optimal home office positioning will have a huge effect on your happiness – and productivity – so take a good look around your cottage and find a place that fits the bill. Ideally speaking, it should be somewhere with natural light that’s not too warm in summer (hang a blind to control illumination) nor too cold in winter: temperature fluctuations can have a detrimental effect on computers (and other electronic equipment) so ensure conditions are balanced. Opt for a space that’s tucked away from family traffic to avoid distractions and interruptions, and make it attractive so it’s a place in which you actually want to spend time.
Living on video If you have to do a video or Zoom-type conference call while working from home, ensure your colleagues only see the ‘work’ you by making sure the backdrop is clean and neutral – you don’t want to give everyone a house tour! Choose a blank wall to create a tidy backdrop without distraction and make sure your camera is at a good height so you can be clearly seen. We work from the cottage in this way, and have invested in low-cost LED lighting on tripods so we look bright and nicely illuminated at all times.
HOME IN THE HIGHLANDS
Connectivity is key
Hot desking
Finally – some good news in the world of cottage country’s (oft’ murky) internet – it seems things are improving with greater and stronger coverage, though it’s still far from perfect. If you’re not sure who to use, check in with your local Facebook group (we have one on Drag Lake) though bear in mind that coverage reach can be every bit as unique as the properties that dot the lake’s perimeter. In the last year we’ve gone from no available internet (and having to use a Rogers wireless internet rocket hub: ideal for emails and browsing) to amazing coverage through a Bell antenna. We can now send and receive large items, which means we no longer have to sneak into the library to download Netflix!
Investing in a desk will bring out the best in you, while providing a clean, comfortable surface upon which to work, create order and store paperwork. If working from your dining table, pick up a small paper cart (or wheeled drawer unit) then whisk it away at the end of the workday. It’s also worth investing in a proper office chair so you don’t give yourself back problems from sitting all day in a hard chair. We recently picked up a pair of ergonomic chairs for $40 a pop from a liquidation centre in Selwyn, so shop around for bargains.
Working from home works well, as long, that is, as you create a timetable and stick to it – this includes taking regular breaks and avoiding sitting in one position for too long. Break routine by getting out and about (wherever possible) and meet up with co-workers in cafés for regular updates – you don’t have to become a lonely hermit. Without a commute to work, there’s always the danger we become too sedentary, so don’t become overly deskbound. Take regular walks to keep the blood flowing – a refreshing break, after all, will invigorate the mind to make working from home seem like the promotion for which you always dreamed!
“
A slice of fenestration fabulous. You WON’T be disappointed. We’ve specified this brand for more years than we care to remember and have always been thrilled with the results. If you’re planning a fenestration update, these industry leaders should be your go to. FACT!" - Colin & Justin

Fall in love
with your cottage this season
Looking to extend the season? Not quite ready to head back to the city? Colin and Justin are of a similar mind. With Labour Day, Thanksgiving and Halloween still on the horizon, there’s no better time to plan a few last hoorahs before cottage season (in traditional terms, certainly) is over. This observed, ‘traditional’ cottage season has certainly evolved. Why so? Well, due in part, perhaps, to the global health crisis (and our growing need to hunker down) escaping to one’s holiday home is no longer a pursuit that’s restricted to the May to Sept schedule. Yes indeed, you – and we – seem keener than ever to turn the Haliburton County adventure into a year-long love affair.
HOME IN THE HIGHLANDS
Extending your outdoor time Watching the seasons change certainly ranks as a favourite pursuit in cottage country. And fall, of course, as the barometric shift vibrates, ranks as the most dramatic. So go on: be inspired by Mother Nature’s arsenal and create your own autumn festival. Invite your permitted friends and family ‘bubble’ over to enjoy an ever-changing kaleidoscope with trail hikes and forest walks to add to the fun. Finish in front of the campfire with delicious barbeque treats as a rewarding conclusion to a perfect day. Bliss!
Warm up your cocktail offering Who says cocktails are just for summer? Hmm? Certainly not us. Thanks to the internet, you can explore a world of amazing bartender recipes, any of which would be guaranteed to upscale your outdoor drinks offering. We’ve been testing these for you (it’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it) and can recommend Bourbon Spiked Apple Cider (with star anise, clove and cinnamon: yum), Hot Honey Lemon With Vodka (a traditional cold shifter but with added cinnamon and a shot of vodka) or the St-Germain Chocolat Epice – a heady mix of tequila, elderflower liqueur and hot chocolate. Now if only the LCBO served takeaway hot drinks like Starbucks. Can you imagine?
Outdoor heating Adding a heater or gas flame fire to your deck or patio is a sure-fire (s’cuse the pun) way to add months of usage. Position safely, far from anything combustible, and in the best place to take advantage of views from all sides. Choose a model – and style – that complements your existing cottage vibe to add warmth and architectural ‘relevance’. Note: some fires and heaters (but not all) can be directly attached to your propane system to avoid the need for smaller, ancillary tanks. A specialist supplier like Budget Propane (budgetpropaneontario.com) will give you all the advice you need to make the right decision.
Extend your sunroom life If your bug-screened room also has vinyl window panels, then you can obviously shut out rain and add an extra season to your enjoyment quotient. The Sunspace Weathermaster System is perfect for this – for more info, visit sunspacesunrooms. com. If you plan on installing new tile or stone, consider adding radiant floor heating to deliver a source of warmth that doesn’t take up any floorspace. Or you could add a Carbon Fiber IR Utility Outdoor Heater with Wall/Ceiling Mount: positioned on a back wall and aimed into the centre of the room, it will augment temperatures at the flick of a switch. Failing that, simply dim the lights
/25
and use safe battery-operated candles to proffer a warm, twinkling glow. Finally, layer in a selection of textural rugs, throws and blankets and you’ll soon have fall season style wrapped up perfectly.
Add an outdoor sauna or hot tub Create a total winter wonderland by investing in an outdoor sauna or hot tub. Hey, be inspired by our Scandinavian cousins, and discover that little is more exhilarating than a jump between cold and heat. Go on: roll around in the snow in your bathing suit (or, if you’ve got the nerve, starkers!) then head into the sauna for a good old sweat, making sure, of course, that temperature extremes are manageable for your level of health. Try Dundalk Leisure Craft (dundalkleisurecraft.com) for the best tubs and saunas on the market – we’ve specified them across various projects and never been disappointed. Yes indeed: it’s official. We’re ready for a continuing season of love, right here in Haliburton, huh? Of course we are! And remember, if the warm, wonderful weather continues beyond October, simply apply your warming ideas to November and December… to become totally geared up for Christmas! How many shopping days remain?
Layer up a sunroom with rugs, throws and blankets to extend the joy into the cooler months. The Sunspace sunroom doors concertina to bring in fresh air.

HOT PROPERTIES NATURAL COMFORT
Peace and quiet – and nature. That’s what you’ll find at this home on a small, motor-restricted lake about 20 minutes from Minden. With at least 67 acres and a very natural shoreline, this is a place to relax among the trees and the birds. This custombuilt home has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The kitchen, which has a large island, is finished in cherry cabinetry and granite countertops. The lower level is finished, and the main floor master suite has a large walk-in closet. Comfort at home – wild outside. More info from Linda Baumgartner, broker, at haliburtonrealestate.on.ca. $979,000.
LAKESIDE CABANA
There’s something for everyone at this property on Lake St. Nora. As well as the three (+1) bedrooms and three bathrooms, there’s a large games room, a solarium, an exercise room with a sauna, two private outdoor sitting areas and two large heated garages. You’ll enjoy the 1.5 acres of privacy and lake frontage from the bedroom balconies. A cabana with electricity at the water’s edge will make summer weekends a pleasure, as will the hardpacked sand shallow lake entry and deep water off the end of the dock. More info from Lisa Mercer, broker, at lisamercer.ca. $995,000. Hot Properties is a feature produced and written by Home in the Highlands staff. The real estate agents mentioned have not paid for promotion or contributed to the content in any way. Information comes from publicly-available real estate listings published by MLS and individual realtors, and is assumed to be correct and accurate.
