JCSC Foundation News
We want to welcome our newest member to the Johnson City Senior Center Foundation Board, Whitney Larkin. Ms. Larkin is the Director of Volunteers at Ballard Health and believe she will be a valuable asset to our board. We also want to recognize Rebecca Hennessee who has been reappointed for another 3 year term. The JCSC Foundation provides funding for programs such as the Fellowship program for low-income seniors, the annual Christmas box project, funding for services of the Community Health Activities Coordinator, outings and other program opportunities for seniors. This year the foundation will be hosting their 2nd annual Pickleball tournament October 25th and 26th and other fundraising opportunities to help the Johnson City Senior Center. Beginning February 1, 2019, Congregate Meals will be served from 12:00-12:15 for those who have registered. At 12:15 continuing until 12:25 if there is food available, it will be served to those who did not register but have shown up to eat lunch. Please register in advance to ensure your meal!

Meet our newest team member! My name is David Ashworth, and I am the new Program Coordinator for the senior hiking groups. I am excited to be associated with the Senior Center and look forward to meeting all hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. I am an East Tennessee native and graduate of ETSU. I recently retired from the corporate world and look forward to following my passion of the great outdoors. My hobbies include bicycling, hiking and all watersports. My wife, Linda, and I have been married for thirty-one years and have one son, Ethan. We also the enjoy spending time with our Goldendoodle named Lucy. Come join me as we explore our beautiful Appalachian Mountains.

Inclement Weather Policy: If Johnson City Schools are closed for bad weather, the center will open at 10:00am and all instructor led programs cancelled and the center will close at 5:00pm. If the Johnson City Schools are on a 2 hour delay for bad weather, the center will open at 10:00am and programs will occur as normal and the center will close at normal hours.

Eagle Cam Discussion Tuesday, March 19 10a Instructor: Shannon Sutherland • Cost: Free Mrs. Sutherland will come to the Community Center to lead a discussion and Q&A about Bald Eagles and especially our local Eagles. She has been involved with the ETSU eagle cameras since they started four seasons ago and is looking forward to the opportunity to share her passion about Bald Eagles at the Senior Center. FREE TAX ASSISTANCE Volunteers working through AARP-VITA will prepare your Federal and Tennessee taxes for free at the Memorial Park Community Center beginning Tuesday February 5, 2019. Tax preparation will be by appointment only between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. each Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday until April 12. All volunteers are trained using IRS and AARP-VITA standards and must pass an IRS test. They can prepare all individual and joint tax returns, with a few exceptions for certain complicated returns. There are no age or income limitations for this free service. For appointments, please call the Center staff at 434-6237. You must bring proof of your Social Security number and the Social Security numbers of all dependents on the return, photo identification for all individuals, and all tax documents such as W-2s, 1099-Rs, SSA-1099s, 1099-Bs, brokers statements, 1099-INTs and 1099-DIVs, as well as your filed 2017 tax return. If you purchased health insurance through the Marketplace, you must also bring your form 1095-A, which you will receive from the federal government. Until you have received all needed forms, the volunteers will be unable to complete your returns.

Jonesborough Yarn Exchange Radio Show-Affrilachia Monday, February 25 Leave MPCC at 4:45p, return approx. 9p Cost: $7 for ticket and transportation The award-winning Jonesborough Yarn Exchange production, A Night with the Yarn Exchange, is a monthly, story-based old-time radio performance at the International Storytelling Center. The production is broadcast on the local public radio station 89.5 FM and streamed online. These productions celebrate the culture, history, and stories of the people of Jonesborough and the Southern Appalachian Region. Now in its fifth season, the show is performed by a multi-cultural cast of local actors, storytellers, and musicians, creating an audio patchwork quilt of what it means to be home in the Mountains of Tennessee. This month’s topic is Affrilachia: Unsung Heroes. Frank X Walker coined the term Affrilachia to describe the unique contributions of African Americans who have contributed to developing the culture of the Appalachian region, and how those contributions have helped shape the entire country: Source jonesboroughtn.org.
