Dear Friends, Welcome to the 79th season of the Ogunquit Playhouse! As always I am honored to welcome you to this grand old theatre, whether it is for the first time or for a return visit. Our company is proud to bring you a season in 2011 that is so much fun, it shouldn’t be legal! There is something for everyone at the Ogunquit Playhouse this year – an edgy hip show, a Broadway Golden Era Classic, a spectacular Blockbuster, a new hit show that is a fun romp for all ages and the East Coast premiere of a musical that will bring folks of a certain age back to their glory days (or should I say daze!).” And, each one of our shows is produced, cast and staged exclusively for the Ogunquit stage. You will notice upon entering the lobby that this winter was spent renovating our antiquated rest rooms. In order to better accommodate our female patrons, we increased our rest room capacity, to hopefully decrease waiting time and long lines incurred during intermissions in the past, and to overall improve our visitor services. The two female restrooms in the lobby are a temporary measure while we continue to investigate how to expand our facility, while keeping within the National Historic Trust guidelines we are dedicated to adhere to. For this season, we ask for our gentlemen to kindly bear with us, and use the Royal Rest Rooms installed on both the north and south sides of our property. Again, these improvements, like the major reconstruction of our rigging system last year, are a result of the RESTORATION FEES you pay with every ticket. You personally have helped to strengthen the infrastructure of the Ogunquit Playhouse! Your are in for a treat with our season opener, the Tony Award winner for Best Musical of the Year, the smash-hit, Avenue Q! This delightful parody will have you laughing out loud, but be forewarned – you will realize that you are NOT on Sesame Street! We have put this show together for you with the original creators, the Broadway puppets and many cast members who either performed it on Broadway or the National Tour. For our production we have 62 puppets playing 10 different puppet roles – they are changed out for different hairstyles, costumes and in some cases no costumes! We are proud to be the east coast premier of a brand new musical, Summer of Love, which features the powerful music of the late 1960s, by some of the most influential artists of the love generation: The Mamas and the Papas, Donovan, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane and many more. Our season continues with the critically acclaimed Broadway classic, The Music Man. This All-American favorite is filled with quirky characters and the award winning songs that have long become American standards: “76 Trombones,” “Till there Was You” and “Trouble.” Our dear friend and Emmy Award winning actress Sally Struthers returns to Ogunquit to star in Legally Blonde the Musical, as the bull-dog-toting-hairdresser Paulette! Join Sally, the cast and the Broadway dogs for this all singing, all dancing, feel-good musical based on the smash hit movie. The fall ushers in one of the most stunning Broadway blockbusters of all time, Miss Saigon, an epic love story that will touch your heart and haunt your memory. This compelling tale, a modern variation of Madame Butterfly by the creators of Les Misérables, with some of the most emotionally powerful songs ever written for the stage, will be produced here on our stage in full glory. The Ogunquit Playhouse is ready for a Summer of Love, Fun, Music, Dogs and Puppets! We hope you join us for every spectacular show this season!

W

hat?!? I can’t believe Ogunquit Playhouse is starting their season with Avenue Q? Isn’t that that ‘dirty puppet show’? Well, yes and no...

It’s also the ‘dirty puppet show’ that won the 2004 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical, beating out a little show you might have heard of called Wicked. It’s also the ‘dirty puppet show’ that ran for 2534 performances on Broadway and then was the first musical in history to transfer straight to off-Broadway where it is still going strong to this day. It’s also the ‘dirty puppet show’ that the New York Times called “a breakthrough musical” comparing its long-term influence to shows such as West Side Story and The King and I. Avenue Q was created by a couple of 20-something writers who were having a tough time adjusting to adult life after college. They, like all of us, were searching to find their purpose in life. So, they went back to a time of comfort and where they and many of us first learned a lot about life-- Sesame Street! But as they soon found out, it is a much different place when you are an adult and the lessons you are learning usually have nothing to do with things like, ‘the letter E’. Is Avenue Q adult humor? Definitely. Is it a musical unlike any other? No question. Is it a musical that combines the art of puppetry with musical theater in a mix that has never been done before or since, all in a way that will make you laugh, reminisce, think and leave the theater with a full heart and tune in your head?. Well, that’s what it’s all about... I am thrilled and honored to be back at Ogunquit Playhouse where they are willing to present such wonderful theater, of the typical and of the not-always-so-typical. So sit back and enjoy and take a chance on Avenue Q -- you’ll be glad you did. —Keith Andrews

About the Avenue Q Puppets

T

he Avenue Q puppets, which cost up to $10,000 each, and require up to 120 hours of hand fabrication per character, were designed and built by original cast member Rick Lyon. Lyon's company, Lyon Puppets, continues to build and maintain the puppets used in all North American productions. Their unusually sturdy construction, with double-stitching, reinforced seams, steel boning, and custom fake fur and feathers, is necessitated by the rigors of an eight-shows-per-week performance schedule. For our Ogunquit Playhouse production there are 62 puppets performing 10 characters – hairdo changes, costume changes or no costumes as the case may be… Three distinct types of puppets are used in the show:

• Single-Rod Puppets: Princeton, Kate Monster Single-rod puppets consist of a head and a torso with two arms, one movable for gestures and one decorative. The puppeteer controls the puppet's head and mouth with his or her dominant hand, and holds a rod in the other hand that is attached to the puppet's movable arm. The nonfunctional arm is either "posed" in a permanent gesture or attached to the puppet's torso.

• Double-Rod Puppets: Rod, Lucy, The Bears Double-rod puppets are identical to single-rod puppets except that both arms are movable, each controlled by a separate rod. The head and mouth are controlled in the same way, with the dominant hand, and the two rods are held in the other hand. The puppeteer drops one rod temporarily when only one arm requires animation.

• Live-Hands Puppets: Nicky, Trekkie Monster, Mrs. T, Ricky Live-hands puppets require two puppeteers, each of whom contributes one hand and arm dressed with a long sleeve and glove matching the puppet's costume, which become the arms and hands of the puppet. The speaking puppeteer controls the puppet's left hand and head/mouth, while the second, silent operator controls the right hand. (Roles are sometimes reversed if the speaking puppeteer is left-handed.) During Avenue Q, one puppeteer will sometimes leave to take over another puppet, leaving the live-hands puppet with a single operator and only one functioning hand. In a variation, one or both of the puppet's hands can be attached to its torso to permit operation by a single puppeteer. 35

hat began on a warm evening in a renovated garage in Ogunquit’s town square during the summer of 1933, quickly blossomed into one of our country’s finest theatres and continues today as “America’s Foremost Summer Theatre.” Broadway showman Walter Hartwig and his wife Maude dedicated their lives to bringing firstquality theatre to venues outside of New York City as part of the “Little Theatre Movement” of the 1920s and early 30s. When the Depression put an end to the Movement, the Harwig’s started The Ogunquit Playhouse in its original home in downtown Ogunquit. 1933-1936 the Manhattan Theatre Colony and brought it to the renowned art colony and summer resort town of Ogunquit. Hartwig’s reputation and connections to Broadway allowed him to persuade such theatre legends as Maude Adams, Ethel Barrymore and Laurette Taylor to star with the resident company. The theatre experienced enormous success and soon sought larger quarters; Hartwig bought a parcel of land, part of the old Weare Farm on Route 1 and built the present-day Ogunquit Playhouse, which opened on July 17, 1937. Unlike other Summer Theatres of its day, which were renovated barns, garages or churches, the Ogunquit Playhouse was the first, and remains the only, summer theatre from the Summer Stock era built exclusively as a seasonal venue! For its time it was a state of the art building that rivaled many theatres in New York.

With Walter Hartwig’s death in 1941, his widow Maude stepped in to carry on his legacy. Maude kept the theatre alive and well during the turbulent years of WWII, which caused many summer theatres to close forever. In 1950 John Lane, then a young actor, was hired as general manager to help oversee production duties. He acquired the theatre and land from the retiring Maude in 1951. Joined by a new business partner, Henry Weller, they embarked on a long-range plan of modernizing and improving the building and grounds and without missing a beat, enhanced the tradition of excellence in entertainment on the Ogunquit stage. Through John Lane’s dedicated direction, professional integrity and impeccable taste, generations of theatergoers enjoyed the brightest stars and finest professional actors performing in Broadway’s best shows.

John Lane

After a long and successful career, John Lane retired in 1994. In order to perpetuate his legacy he spearheaded the formation of the Ogunquit Playhouse Foundation, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to “preserve and maintain the Ogunquit Playhouse as a community-based performing-arts center.” John Lane transferred ownership to the newly formed Foundation in 1997, after $500,000 was raised to ensure the longevity and maintenance of the theatre and grounds. John’s extraordinary stewardship of the Ogunquit Playhouse ended after 46 years. Though John Lane passed away in the autumn of 2000, his Playhouse — our Playhouse — continues to be a dynamic testimony to his commitment to professional live theatre.

In September 1999 the Ogunquit Playhouse Foundation selected Roy M. Rogosin as Producing Artistic Director for the Playhouse to build a bridge between the legendary history of the Playhouse and the exciting and challenging future ahead. During this transition the Playhouse began to produce its own shows, designing and building

sets and costumes and bringing back the stars, including Sally Struthers and Lucie Arnaz. The Colony was restored as a center for youth theatre classes and performances as the Children’s Theatre Program began to grow and prosper. 2006 ushered in a new era as newly appointed Executive Artistic Director Bradford Kenney assumed the reigns. The Playhouse continued its tradition of excellence with regional premieres of two Broadway classics, Cabaret and Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, while continuing Richard Kind, Liz Larsen , Christian Hoff, Glory Crampton the tradition of star-studded productions with “Guys and Dolls” 2009 Andrea McArdle, Sally Struthers and Leslie Uggams all gracing the Playhouse stage. 2006 also brought additional improvements to the sound and lighting systems with grants from The Maine Arts Commission and The Donato J. Tramuto Foundation.Visitation more than doubled and the demand enabled the theatre to expand its season from the traditional 10 weeks to a 22-week season. For the first time in its history, the Playhouse opened its doors in May and extended the season into the fall making the Ogunquit Playhouse a true regional theatre. Our 75th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary Season was celebrated in 2007 with star-studded shows, record breaking crowds and glorious Broadway costumes and sets for magnificent shows that included Crazy for You with Rue McClanahan, The King and I starring Lorenzo Lamas, The Full Monty starring Sally Struthers and Hunter Foster, La Cage aux Folles with Maxwell Caulfield and Hairspray starring Eddie Mekka and Ryan Landry. The 75th Anniversary Season raised the bar for the Ogunquit Playhouse setting the stage for “Broadway at the Beach” to continue and ensuring its place in history as “America’s Foremost Summer Theatre.” For the first time in its history the Playhouse developed and offered special performances for middle and high school aged children in 2008. Performances of Fiddler on the Roof and Les Misérables were sold out to enthusiastic students from the seacoast region. In 2009, thanks to corporate funding from Bank of America and a grant from the Davis Family Foundation, the school performance and other outreach programs were able to grow. Our Outreach efforts now include partnering with dozens of social service agencies throughout the region to bring less fortunate children and families to the Playhouse to enjoy live theatre. Thanks to our local business sponsors, granting institutions, members and donors, we are able to support these initiatives. In addition, the Ogunquit Playhouse also received American Masterpiece grants from the Maine Arts Commission for its productions of My Fair Lady and Guys and Dolls. In 2011, an exclusive performance for school groups is scheduled for the fall, offering students an opportunity to see Miss Saigon, the epic and haunting love story based on Madame Butterfly by the creators of Les Misérables. In 2010, for the first time in 78 years the Ogunquit Playhouse Foundation invested in a new steel support system for the stage house section of the theatre – an entire steel skeleton now supports the building and a new rigging system. As opposed to hanging all this weight on our historic building, the new, stronger steel skeleton can support our scenery and curtains and can accommodate a much larger scale of hanging scenery if needed.

The Ogunquit Playhouse marks its 79th season with the best Broadway musicals including a new edgy Tony Award winner, a timeless classic Broadway favorite, two Broadway blockbusters and the East Coast premiere of a brand new musical; all produced, cast and staged exclusively for the Ogunquit stage. We are dedicated to producing the finest shows ever to appear on Broadway stages, right here on our own stage and to carrying on the legacy of the Ogunquit Playhouse – one that will continue to be enjoyed and appreciated by generations to come.

If you have met with estate planners and your head is spinning with all the taxes your family might pay, don’t distress. The Ogunquit Playhouse has lots of creative ideas that will not only help you and your family save estate taxes, but can also provide you with income and tax deductions today while helping preserve the Ogunquit Playhouse. Lifetime Income: The Playhouse can structure your gift to provide you and/or your spouse/partner with a lifetime of income and afterwards the Ogunquit Playhouse is the beneficiary of the balance. While receiving income, you may qualify for an income tax charitable contribution for a portion of your gift. This gift can start with a number of different assets: cash, appreciated or not-so-appreciated stocks, and other traditional assets. Life Insurance: Do you have an old paid-up or not-so-paid-up life insurance policy kicking around? You can make the Playhouse the beneficiary and possibly qualify for a nice tax deduction right now and eliminate this asset from your estate. In addition, your life insurance will help support the future of the Playhouse for generations to come. Real Estate: You love your home or vacation home, but may wish to give support to the Playhouse now by transferring ownership immediately while retaining your residence. You can maintain the right to live there until you no longer require a residence. Your generosity will support the Ogunquit Playhouse plus give you tax benefits. If we’ve piqued your interest, please contact Advancement Committee Chair, Board Member John Rhoades, at the Playhouse to arrange a meeting with a charitable giving specialist who can provide more details and discuss all the appropriate options specific to your situation and needs. Mr. Rhoades can be reached through Jean Benda at the Playhouse: 207.646.2402 ext. 207.

Avenue Q

A Musical Unlike Any Other!

W

From a Church Basement to the Tony Awards!

e’re not that special after all – a shocking discovery made by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, Avenue Q co-creators and members of the generation raised to believe they were special – TV’s Mr. Rogers wanted to be their friend and 04 20 e th Receive ial! Rober t Lopez neighbor; they were told they could grow Jeff Mar x and rns out, they are pretty spec Tu d. ar Aw up to be anything they wanted to be, from a ny To fireman to President of the United States and even in college they readied themselves to set the world on fire. But once out of college, faced with rent bills and entry level jobs with low pay, much to their horror and dismay, they discovered life wasn't nearly as easy or nice as they had expected it was going to be. It wasn’t like "Sesame Street!" Robert Lopez had wanted to write musicals his entire life. Jeff Marx, an entry level entertainment lawyer, decided to try to become a producer after he realized the clients he represented were having more fun than he was. Both men decided the next step to take was to apply to the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Writing workshop. The partnership began when Lopez asked Marx to write a song with him after seeing Marx present a funny song in class called, “People Suck.” Marx and Lopez then decided to write a movie musical that would appeal to everyday people - people who didn't necessarily already like musicals – so, they decided to write a Muppet movie. Their movie musical was based on Hamlet and called Kermit, Prince of Denmark. They sent the songs and a synopsis to Brian Henson, the head of the Jim Henson Company, to see if he would be interested in working on the film with them. He declined. From that experience they decided to create their own family of characters and the basis for Avenue Q began to materialize. Originally, Avenue Q was intended as a TV show to pitch to Comedy Central, Fox, HBO, or the like. But, because Marx and Lopez didn’t have any TV connections, and because a young director named Seth Goldstein invited them to do a reading at the York Theater, where he was working at the time, they decided to try it as a stage work. They invited puppet designer and puppeteer, Rick Lyon, who they had met on the “Kermit” project, to get a Alumni of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. Gathering are (standing) Pat Cook, Workshop Artistic Coordinator and Moderator; Frank Evans, Associate Producer; BMI's Jean Banks; and (seated) Avenue Q creators Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx.

couple puppets together and to bring some of his puppeteer buddies to play the other characters. They also invited everyone they knew, including the general public and faxed every producer's office. They didn't charge any admission. The theatre filled, and due to tremendous buzz, went on for three more sold out performances! A friend at the Manhattan Theater Club who liked their work, called theatre producer, Robyn Goodman, who in turn invited theatre producers Jeffrey Seller and Kevin McCollum, all of whom Rick Lyon, Creator of the Puppets of Avenue Q. happened to be looking for new projects to produce. Jeffrey Seller met Lopez and Marx in the lobby immediately after the very first reading and told them he loved the production and thought it would make a great stage musical. If they wanted to do it on stage instead of on TV, he would be interested in producing it. Lopez and Marx figured since this was a guy who, with his partner, produced Rent, wasted no time in shaking his hand and saying, “Um, ok, let’s do it.” Since the puppets were originally intended for television, for that first stage reading they were faced with the problem of how to hide the puppeteers, as well as how they would hold their scripts and turn pages. They decided to just let the performers stay in plain view and hold the puppets and not make any effort to hide the fact that they were there. And to everyone’s great surprise, when the performers started breathing life into the puppets, and giving them expressions, movements and voices, they were able to convince the audience that the puppets were real! So, today in Avenue Q, the puppeteers just walk around carrying their puppets the way they did in the first reading. The show was presented at the 2002 National Music Theatre Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center in Waterford, Connecticut. It was then produced Off Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre in March, 2003. By July of that year it moved to Broadway where it was nominated for six Tony Awards and won three including Best Musical. With 2,534 performances, Avenue Q ranks 21st on the list of longest running shows in Broadway history. The show ended its Broadway run on September 13, 2009, and 6 weeks later, reopened in the New World Stages complex on West 50th Street, where it continues to play today as an Off Broadway production. Since 2003 it has been produced in Las Vegas, The West End in London, numerous national tours and throughout the world. What began with a concept, a couple of songs, and then a staged reading in a borrowed theatre in the basement of a church, with actors paid for by buying them dinner, blossomed into one of the most irreverent and adored shows on Broadway and now right here on our own stage with the original creators work and wonderful puppets in place!
